Samsung Galaxy S3 (Telus) Red Underlined Spell Checking Missing..? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

A week or two ago I switched from a BlackBerry to a Samsung Galaxy S3. One of the features that I was used to with a BlackBerry for 5+ years was the red underlining of misspelled words that could be selected and presented with a bunch of choices for the correct spelling. I find the predictive text feature makes too many mistakes and slows me down too much when typing so I want to have this same functionality on my S3. I thought I would have that feature from reading this prior to making the switch:
The URL here states:
"To fix misspelled words more easily, Android 4.0 adds a spell-checker that locates and underlines errors and suggests replacement words. With one tap, you can choose from multiple spelling suggestions, delete a word, or add it to the dictionary. You can even tap to see replacement suggestions for words that are spelled correctly..."

This feature/option is absolutely no where to be found on my Telus S3. I have read that Samsung removed it, and that in order to get it back I have to do some crazy 'hacking' mentioned here. While I do have my S3 rooted (it was easy to root) doing what is suggested in the post above seems very difficult and risky... has anyone tried what is mentioned in this post or does anyone know of another way to get the 'red underlining' spell check feature on a Samsung S3? Something via a 3rd party keyboard would be fine with me, but I've tried 4 or 5 so far and none seem to have this feature.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hey
Have you checked out the "android keyboard settings"??
There's an option there..

Hmm, where can I find that? Is it under "Language and input"? Because under there I just have "Samsung Keyboard" and "Google voice typing" as Keyboards and input methods.

Grab the stock ICS android keyboard and use that instead of the samsung one. You can find it on the play store.
After that use the language settings to make it the default keyboard.

Humm your right to your I thought that is what have it back to me. Sorry for that. I'll have to do some more digging.

i have no clue, custom roms probably

Correct, changing keyboard will not fix this. I can confirm it was not present in the Samsung S3 default firmware.
Now that I'm on CM10, it is there and working. I'm sure there's a few custom ROMs that have this feature enabled.

pretty stupid,
almost certain samsung's website lists spell checker as a feature

So CM10 is available for Telus SGH-I747M? Hmmm, I'm pretty new to the Android scene. I assume it's going to be a lot of work switching myself over to CM10... I wonder how well Light Flow would work on CM10 as well. Bah I guess I have a ton of reading to do.

It is available, but in a preview state. Lots of people using it as a daily driver, but there are still outstanding issues that could hold you back. Flashing it is not too difficult, just follow this for any ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Not sure about Light Flow, never used it. But depending on what you're using it for, CM10 does in include a few more LED customization options over stock, notably color and pulse rate control on a per app basis.

with CM9/10 dont you loose the S3 camera functions? burst mode and autofocus? pic while Vid?

CM10, at least, is nowhere near complete so it's hard to say what the final camera will include. The most recent update included a massive amount of camera improvements, and I'm sure there are more to come.
Burst mode is missing but I just confirmed that taking a picture while shooting a video works. Just have to tap the screen.

Any update on the status of spell check?
Is there no way to incorporate spell check into the Samsung Galaxy S3?
I've searched for hours trying to understand why there is no spell check on board the S3. Some people say it is a keyboard function, while other's say it is a ROM function. If it is a ROM function, can you please point me to a ROM which does have spell check. Thank you.

I could be wrong and this is my first post but with the telus carrier anyways the spell check is there but it's in a weird location. If you enable Predictive text which one of the options under the samsung keyboard settings and than actually click on predictive text you will get a whole pile of options which has spell check, word completion next word and all that stuff. Hope this helps if not o well.

Thank you for the suggestion, but...
Thank you for the suggestion, but it doesn't give me the ICS spell check.
Anyone else know how to incorporate the spell check into the stock rom. I have tried Task's & Ktoonsez AOKP 4.2.1 by , but the rom has issues with saving pictures to my 32GB SD card. Can we add spell check into the stock rom?
Thanks.

[MOD] MIUI Extended Settings Mod

It's time for a change...I think some might like the changes others might not..
I've created an App. (it's my first one so no laughing!!!)
It contains the same options you know and love and a couple of new ones!!!
The idea of creating an App is to cut down on the number of files I have to tinker with each week. It was taking too much time. This way I only have to modify the SystemUI.apk and the Launcher2.apk and I'm done.
Those users who couldn't use this Mod because of the changes to services.jar should now be fine..
Couple of things to note..
The option to Hide the Debug Icon is missing. I'm trying to work out a way of hiding the icon without modifying services.jar
If you change the battery Top Bar you might notice a delay of a few seconds before it updates.. (Just me being Lazy)
The Auto Close feature is now standard with the Launcher so the option to enable it is no longer needed.
There are three version
ESCenter - Center Clock Version
ESSwitched - Center Clock, Notification and signal icons switched.
ESRight - Standard version with clock on the right as normal.

i strong heartedly disagree with the above poster. I'm on MIUI atm, and I get one full day of use out of my SGS, with HSDPA enabled /always connected, lots and lots of browsing, phone calls, sms, yahoo and whatsapp messenger online almost 24/7, some games, some BT transfers and some Wifi.
then again, I do know how to customize my SGS with black themes and various other settings to extend battery life...btw, no underclocking or undervolting..
no way you're gonna get the same level of polish and the same experience on Eclair..
just my 2 cents...
cheers!

I would have to also tell you, yea there is...
Just because there are people like yourself who extremly are satisfied with it and consider it a top rom, doesn't mean everyone see it in the same light.
I stuck with MIUI with every version from 3 to the latest 5.3, it was my first ever custom rom, and as much as I wanted to like it I finnaly decided to give up on it for the foreseeable future. Even for someone who tried to like it was biased toward it it is more a gimmick rom for entertainment, than proper sgs rom you'd consider serious. Even tried to get my friends on it while I was on it, everyone hated it.
In my opinion it has great potential, but its still in its infancy. It is way to rough and misguided to be a good solid rom. Even going to a base 2.2 rom just rooted and lagfixed beats MIUI in almost every aspect. I finnaly don't feel like breaking my phone again. Almost every aspect of MIUI is different, which is where the appeal comes from, but somehow the difference is rarely for the better and it manages never to be as good even an original rom in terms of usability. At the moment I would consider it the poorest choice out of the the popular roms.
Since you will probably ask, the biggest downfalls off the top of my head I had with MIUI is unrelenting and completely unsolvable battery drain issues. This alone makes the rom not worth taking seriously. Calendar, the way you set your alarm, messaging, contacts etc, having to press double or more buttons to get to particular areas the stock phone does in 1, little things like that.
Laggy menus is another one.
I dont even want to get into how bad this rom is with the camera. Horrendeus software, menus etc, recording upside down, and on top of that it completely incapacitated the video recording of the phone. VErsion 5.3 and the videos still record at 3fps and the frames jump back and forward every 2 seconds as well...
heres miui on a good day for you.

Adding an extra option isn't that difficult. Getting that extra option to do what it's supposed to do is the tricky bit!!! )
If Galnet has managed to work out how to implement this feature I'm sure he's more than capable of adding an option to the settings menu but having said that I'm more than happy to help out if needed..

[Q] Android Market won't load more results?

Hi,

Better Keyboard 8 has a lot of sick looking skins. Yeah, I'm going for looks lol.
I found out the problem and I was dumb for not checking it. I looked up "clock", and the results were flowing in like crazy after 13k results. I am assuming the Market app has a bug with certain search criteria as I remember that Better Keyboard had a plethora of results to browse through when I searched for it in the old Market.

While you're here, would you by chance know of any popular keyboards that you can skin? I'm searching too but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.
Specifically, I'm going for an ultra-futuristic looking, blue-glow type of look. Better Keyboard had this tron skin that glowed and stuff.. it looked pretty sick, wish I had a screenie of it.

Swype is finally available for Gnexus

Been waiting forever.
Yes I realize an XDA hacked version exists, but it was eating my battery like crazy for some reason ( phone would die on idle in 16 hrs )
Hopefully the clean version doesn't have battery issues for me.
Edit: looks like no battery eating issue now, finally! SwiftkeyX and SlideIT has nothing on Swype
Simply download the installer through your phone.
http://beta.swype.com/android/get/
Then follow the directions.
that battery issue was probably because you tried to download a language pack? I usually get 48 hours+ idle with the hacked swype
anyways, i dont see any news of this update. where do you see the change log?

Sweet, I appreciate the heads up!

Whats funny is that the version stayed the same, I think?

My titanium backup of the hacked swype is the same, but doesnt have a "D"
This is weird of them to do since they said it would be a new version with "extra surprises"

Same effect as increasing the resolution on your monitor - makes icons/text smaller and gives you more effective screen real estate.

I'm sure you've probably figured it out by now but I had this problem on my Droid Bionic and I hated it so I ended up turning it off. I feel that swype was a bit more responsive after I did this as well. Try going to your settings and go to keyboard settings and there should be an option to take off vibration on keypress.

Really popular in Japan, Apple added it to iOS for Japanese users and it was enabled through apps that require jailbreaking in non-Japanese devices and became rather popular from what I understand. They're kind of amusing and fun to use occasionally.

Really popular in Japan, Apple added it to iOS for Japanese users and it was enabled through apps that require jailbreaking in non-Japanese devices and became rather popular from what I understand. They're kind of amusing and fun to use occasionally.

Well emoji is just Japanese for emoticon. Android has always had emoticons built in, albeit Android themed ones. What's so special about the standard Japanese ones?
Maybe I don't understand cause I don't really use them at all...I usually use the simple =D =P kind of ones or try to creatively word my sentences to put emotion in it.
Well Now they are iPhone compatible so you can send them to and from iPhones and there are many more then android.

ah, so there's no way to send them from the stock keyboard yet without 3rd party support? a bit lame.
yea but hope fully that will be fixed soon
You can by going in they keyboard settings and downloading the emoji dictionary. Then when you type stuff like sun, star, heart, smile the icon shows up.
3rd party SMS apps such as chompsms, go sms, handcent have had emoji support for awhile now.
They leave a lot to be desired.

Where exactly? I can't find the dictionary
Settings>language and input>android keyboard settings>then under "text correction" youll find "Add-on dictionaries. You'll have to refresh the list and it should be the second option
However I cant discern if it actually does anything

It does. For example if you enabled it then type, "star" a star shows up in the text prediction box.

I was typing a facebook comment to my friend about a tent on sale and a picture of a tent shows up! if you type heart, a heart shows up.
wished it was easier and can pick directly from the icon list though.
Anyway to get cm9 to support this?

The emoji support this has isn't the same as the iPhone. My wife has an iPhone (I know, I married her before I knew her phone preferences) and I can't see any of her emoji. She can however see mine as some kind of greyscale, dumb downed version.

[6/29] Modded s3 4.4.2 TW Keyboard | Note 3 features | Black theme added

This only works for touchwiz based 4.4.2 roms more than likely only the s3.
Since I couldn't get the note 2 keyboard that MercilessLTD posted to work I decided to look into how to mod the stock one myself. A google search found me this thread. It worked as intended and I changed the size of the number keys to be 42. I can make them larger very easily and I already planned to make a black theme for this in time.
I added the code for the number row to every language. No discrimination here even though it required a bit more work.
Thank you to @josephpatrick for the guide that google found me. Thank you too @MercilessLTD for getting the note 2 one working and inspiring me to find a way around yours not working for me lol :good:
Thanks to @enewman17 for fixing the number row keys and the password field issue.
If you'd like the black theme one in the screenshot below goto this post.

Yea thats ok. I just think it'd be best to hold off on it until I can figure out why this number row only works for half of it in password fields

Blue keyboard background
Hi, would anyone know how to get this blue keyboard background for white keys
http://www.technobuffalo.com/wp-con...T-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3-Keyboard-1280x853.jpg
I ported the LG G3 keyboard. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2770890
It's a great keyboard, one of my favorites right now. It has a dark and light theme, dedicated number row and adjustable height.

thanks!
is there a fix for the numbers 1-5?
Not sure why my xda app didn't tell me bout this. Just DLed. Nice work man. Will look into the bug and the number row background. No promises though. You've already accomplished more than I have.
Edit: its definitely a code issue. On my device 1-4 actually do work but they think they are the row beneath them. If I hit shift to get the symbols to come up the number rown drops down and they work right. Kinda odd. I'll have to do some reading to figure this out. Maybe someone can take this hint and find it faster than I can though.

Thank you man would appreciate it if you could have a look at it or anyone with more experience. I think its something in the smali or public.xml
I've got so many other things I keep taking on having the time to fix this is becoming tough for me so I appreciate you having a look.

My efforts in porting the Note 2 or 3 keyboard is proving to be a bit harder this time.
Either way here is the a test of the S3 stock keyboard with the number row. I haven't figured out the button behind the text yet but it works in the password fields now.
Thanks for fixing that I've been meaning to tell you just to mess with this one some. I'm going to be theming it soon now so we can have a dark one and I'll look into the buttons for number keys some too. I won't have the time to until Sunday though

Looks sweet.
Even sweeter with Samsung alt symbol module enabled in xpose. Far as buttons on number row think it sweeter without them. Like I can touch number pad without hitting wrong button with my big fingers.

I'm getting force closes. Can you tell me what folder you moved it to? and did you uninstall other keyboards?
And yes I did change the properties to the correct ones.

I copied it and went to the system/app folder. Renamed the original "SamsungIME.apk" to "SamsungIME.apk.bak" then pasted the new one in there and set perms to rw.r.r then rebooted.
and I'm a pimp.... Now just got to do floating and the rest of the languages.
you can add or change the image in the res/drawable-sw360dp-xhdpi/sip_key_bg_number_qwerty_xml
I use sip_key_bg_option_qwerty.9 as the image for the number row.
