The speeds on my sg3 in chicago are horrible - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Anyone having same issues the 3g speeds are horrible
Im on my SG3

My speeds have been varying.
Sometimes I'll be at 1900kbps which is good but then it'll drop down to a piss-poor 1000kbps sometimes, even when it's midnight and nobody is using it.

Chicago is a particularly bad market for Sprint data. Luckily for you though, that means that Chicago is one of the first cities to get Network Vision. The process is well underway there now. All of the exurbs and some of the suburbs have many of their towers upgraded. There is an incompatibility issue between the old equipment and the new equipment, so handoffs for data, and especially voice, have a high failure rate. So things have been getting worse rather than better. Because of that unforseen issue, Sprint is speeding up the rollout in Chicago.
Expect LTE and good 3G to come within the next few months.

My speeds are horrible one of my buddies just got sprint to waive the etf he couldnt make a call for 2 days here are my speeds

Chicago is a bad area for att due to density of population just kills att. It's sad when I go there for a week every year, outside that city I like att.

Arent we a sprint forum ?? But yes att sucks in chicago
Im on my SG3

I guess just reiterating what a few others have said, but Network Vision is the culprit here. It's not like Sprint's service was great in Chicago before, but it's been horrid over the past few months. However, once the Chicago rollout is complete, I believe it'll be the best coverage in the area by far.
You just gotta stick with it a little while longer. Some people report that calling them up and explaining what's going on will get you a discount on your bill.

I'm right by the Loyola campus on Sheridan. In my apt I don't receive calls at all. And texts come extremely late. After dealing with techs for days in and out they finally are crediting my account 25 bucks a month for 4 months. Wow. This sucks.

Sprint service quality, is this normal?

I live in NW Indiana (just outside of Chicago) and last night my service was so slow I could not even stream Spotify (with 3-bars on the 3g meter), when I tested with speedtest app I was getting +,- 100 kbps, is that what I can expect from my new carrier?
My phone is rooted with Blazer rom and shows baseband EG31 and Kernel EG30, is that ok or could I have messed up the modem? I tested at 4:40am this morning and got over 1 mbps....
I have noticed, I live in New York, a significant service downgrade in the past three months. My unfounded theory is that it has something to do with the Iphone launch, because service was great about 6 months ago. I had very few problems.
I've noticed the same thing here in Oak Park, CA (just a bit NW of LA), starting about a couple of months ago, on both my Photon and my Epic Touch. Sprint's 3G service has become terribly inconsistent and generally bad.
Its all over thats why im switching to verizon. The worst thing is the reps act like nothings wrong

They keep saying the iphone isn't having any problems. I wonder if they are degrading android to male iphone look better. We are switching to Verizon when the contract is up.
Sprint might be doing work in your area. See map here: https://network.sprint.com/

Same here, data sucks balls big time but voice so far has had no issues.
Its the dat part that is killing it. Yet we have to pay that extra 10 bucks a month just because its a smart phone aka data usage. What a joke.
Or maybe that extra 10 bucks is to pay for data usage for Carrier IQ... LOL
It's not really because of the iPhone, although that plays a small part in it. Sprint has just been lazy overall in maintaining and upgrading their network while the majority of customers have switched to smart phones
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Honestly, I think its just work being done on the network. I noticed the same thing, but 3 days ago I did a prl n profile update (I had done this several times before) n started getting much better service, including 4g. I'm not saying g this is the case for everyone. If you do jump ship, have fun with Verizon. I dealt with them for years before sprint. And if you think sprints customer service is bad. . . Also their data prices are INSANE! but, Verizon does have a better network. TO ME, being able to stream my music collection without worrying about data is more important than being able to watch a movie on 3g, but thats why we get choices if sprint was right for everyone, Verizon wouldn't be in business, and its the same the other way around
If I was helpful, give thanks

When I go within 100ft of the tower I use in my home in Toledo I get full signal strength and peek speeds of 100 kbps, sprint really needs to get on that. Then again in Cleveland I get 1mbit+.
Sprints network is really unstable right now so its probably not the best time to sign a contract with them if you use a lot of data.

Just keeping checking the website that was posted before. We are making a lot of updates and changes to make the network better. I have seen better improvement myself and know more are coming. The next two years are going to have a better and faster network. Remember that the USA is huge so it does take time. The other thing to do is preach to everyone to use wifi whenever they can so that there are less phones on the network until the project is completed in 2013!

Yup lots of variables.
each site can handle only so many people. Older sites have overall capacity issues. Thats to say some sites can handle x amount of users, and x amount of data. Some sites get user upgrades to handle more users but not data, causing a super slow down.
Then theres the issue of interference. Add in any issues your device might be having due to flashing a custom rom, kernel or modem and it all adds up to way to many possibilities.
The good news is, you verified your modem is good, not only did you get slow data speeds one test, but later it was good.
I have a similar experience with my Stock Epic Touch.
Some locations in Dallas, TX have horrible data speeds, while others are hit and miss.
One of the worse i am aware of is the are of i635 / hwy 80. Ever weekend i meet my dad for lunch at a BBQ place in that area. I test every weekend and the speeds are SOO SLOW. But once i leave the area im back to 1meg or so..
Overall i am still happy. I am just patient i guess.
yap service absolutely sucks, that's why I have started using the ROAM method and hopefully within a couple of months sprint will let me leave at no cost.
I think the implementation of "Network Vision" is going to cause things to get worse before they get better in many areas.

I was up in Michigan City last month for 4 days (Mother in Law and Wife's Grandma live there) and was in and around Hammond and Valpo as well. I got much better speeds than that with my EG4T. The 3G in MC was actually superior to the 3G down here in DFW, although they don't seem to have 4G...
I was running Caulkin's 1.0 at the time, and it was pretty nice up there.

Sprint 3G finally improving?

So I have been horribly frustrated with sprints 3G speeds since I got my epic. I live in metro Detroit. (Fairly large sprint market) and have averaged around 50-75kbps DL. With a 600ms+ ping. And there is ZERO wimax anywhere. I was getting fed up. Until over the last month or so I have seen 600%+ increase in speeds. I now average closer to 500kbps DL with a 111ping. And I have even had consistent tests of 1mb DL. Could this be the first fruits of network vision? Or other tower upgrades? Or somehow less traffic. I had considered it could be the newer ROM/modem. (CM10/FH13). Has anyone else seen recent speed increases?

yeah man here in st pete i finally saw a consistent 1 meg down and i was inside ( but near a window) the network map said theres about to be another speed increase here its usually a lie tho.... i doubt its anything permanent sprint fails im moving to straight talk once its all over but im supposed to have lte in my area at the end of my contract and i got employee plan pricing if i have lte at my house then ill keep them if not oh well. could network vision not just be a giant false marketing scheme?
edit well i just did a speed test and im back to the usual 300kbs lol lucky i pay a dial up price and get dial up service XD so i guess not. sprints the most useless unlimited ever. Even living in a wimax area the wimax sucks everywhere but the beach. ( where i dont even need wimax)
I have 5+ months horrible experience with Sprint 3G speed after last two days on roaming service came back this morning better than ever from 0.09Mbps download to 0.89Mbps download huge improvement sadly it last till this evening when service cut off came back horrible as always. :banghead:

Whatever spring says "network vision" is. Clearly they are trying to or want to improve their service. One area they are strong, customer service. But their tech(except phones) sucks. So the question for me is, just like the first guy who replied. Is if they can get LTE working by the time my contract is up. Or at least get 3g solidly above 1mb.. then I would stay no question.

+1, I have 1 year left on my contract. Next July I will re-evaluate sprint and see how things are going. If sprint stepped up to the plate then bonus I will stay but if its the same ol song and dance crap I am gone. Maybe this xmas I will do that re-evaluate of sprint and see what is up and just maybe I might buy off the rest of my contract, pay a etf and jump ship. But having to pay a extra 10 bucks a month just because of a smart phone crap aka 4g is bull**** considering sprint does not have wimax, 4g, lte or what ever here where I live and 3g is absolutly slower than dial up modem speeds.
Well Sprint Vision says that in the next 6 months a tower will basically be put in my backyard, according to their map. My contract is up in 12 months, I'll make a decision then.
I get 8kb/s out here in Toledo....

Mine has picked up in some areas the past few weeks but its still crap in other areas and at random times. Its also still much slower than 3G from any other carrier. My Sprint 3G speeds are often similar to Tmobile Edge speeds I had 4 years ago but Edge was more consistent.
Every week my 3G speed changes, today I am getting less than 100kbps when last week or so I was getting almost 600. I am hoping this is due to them upgrading the towers and that is causing the inconsistencies.
Are you using updated maps to see this info or are you just using the maps on Sprint's website?

Hi all, I have a 2 year contract with Sprint, but I just cant take it anymore, I am planning on cancelling my contract and sign with another company, but I am not sure which one is the best (or less bad) for me in NYC.
Can anyone recommend one with good reception and real data (not the 30kbps 3G sprint has)
Thanks.

Isn't slightly over 2mbps the max for 3G speeds? If you're getting consistently over 1, I wouldn't complain. There are plenty of people elsewhere getting a fraction of that...like 10% of that.
I'd be thrilled with consistent 1-1.5mbps 3G speeds. I'm around Chicago, so LTE is in a few places which is nice, but I'm excited about when they finally upgrade the backhaul for 3G so the speeds will be better.
As for the OP, I would also try changing modems as well, see if some of them work better. Check with other NYC people and see what they're using. Modem can have a HUGE impact on speeds.

Having tried Att and Sprint....I got pretty $hitty coverage with both and this was living in the Bay Area.
For my previouscontract, I selected ATT based on reading the online reviews about them having absolute the fastest service. What the reviews didnt mention was that I couldnt get ATT service 10% of the time which got annoying real fast.
When it works...ATT and Sprint work great....but the 10% of the time you don't get connection, you'll wish you went with Verizon. They might be a tad slower based on the bandwidth test results online...but at least the coverage is more consistent
I will try changing modems, and see if I can get a better reception, thanks.

I don't mean Sprint 3G, I mean the technology limitations themselves. Even if I hop onto Verizon's network with a 3G PRL, I don't ever remember seeing anything over 2mpbs. I have plenty of friends and co-workers who have Verizon and I've never seen anything over that on any of their phones either.
Is it more of a CDMA/GSM 3G thing? Is GSM 3G faster than what you could get on a CDMA network?

Gsm carriers use a backhauled network capable of much faster speeds ....at least on speedtests
Sprint is implementing backhaul tech over the next year or so.
On 3g (hspa+) I have seen as much as 12mbps down but average 3-5 . This is on our att phones.
Funny thing is though side by side we did some comparisons last year and web pages actually loaded slower on attempt s2 vs sprint s2 .. we never really found an explanation.

I'm near Baltimore and over the past 11 years have had Verizon, ATT, T-mo, and Sprint. Each provider had pros and cons. I eventually stuck with Sprint (6 years now). They are the most reliable and ever present. Not the fastest but the only time I've been without service is in the Shenandoah mountains south of us where there is no service coverage by anyone. Sprint has addressed every problem I've ever had as long as I was patient with the rep. Oh wait I was patient with the reps from every provider and they bent over backwards to help me. A Sprint rep have my wife an iPhone for $25 during her last upgrade. We presented then with a problem on our bill and they hooked us up with the phone and fixed the bill.
I don't think any service provider is going to be perfect in all situations. I myself would pick reliable over fastest speed.
Just my opinion but stick it out things are changing with Sprint.

Switch to TMo?

Hello all,
I am thinking of leaving Sprint and going Tmo. I don't have the greatest service in my house and currently have a Airwave. I checked Sensorly and it looks like Tmo may not be strong around my house also. I understand Tmo has wifi calling. I was wondering of I could get input on how it is working? Any issues with it?
Also how is your cell service? I'm located in Los Angeles (So Bay).

I just did the leap two days ago.
I'm in Pasadena, and work in Santa Monica... Let me tell you. It's the best decision I've ever made.
Sprint is horrible, with constant slow data speeds, and disconnects.
I now get 4g LTE everywhere I go, including my daily commute on the 10fwy.
Do it. This phone is awesome and you deserve the 4G speeds
Edit- I was a sprint loyal customer for 10years
I switched from at&t a couple months ago and am glad I did. I get a more consistent signal in my house (near downtown Cincinnati) and wifi calling works really well. .. Just make sure you have a strong even signal in your house, because the call will drop if you walk into an area with weak coverage. The only thing I'm disappointed with is the lack of lte in this market. Everyone wise has it but us an from what I've read, it could be because another local provider blocking deployment. .. Not sure if it will be a deal breaker yet, although Verizon and att are too expensive to go to. .

The Walmart exclusive T-Mobile no contract plan is the best. $30 per month 5gigs high speed data then throttled after 5gigs. Unlimited text but only 100mins. I use google voice anyway paired with a VoIP then you have free calling. I just keep my out on swappa for a good used gsm phone. I am forever done with contracts.
Do it! I just left sprint a month ago for the note 3 and I couldn't be happier.

I'm back in the UK and Wi - Fi calling to the state's have been flawless. Free texts and 3G Web which is still manageable for Emails and browsing. But back to the subject: Wi - fi calling works great.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
The WiFi calling on the Note3 is a little buggy atm; there's already been OTA updates for the other carriers that fix it. I've disabled it both because it's buggy on my high-strength WiFi (echos, drops, CallerID;61 bug, etc), and because I don't really need it in NYC as T-Mobile is everywhere (except deep inside buildings and in basements)
I switched from AT&T (~$75/mo inc taxes&fees) to T-Mobile's prepaid ($30/mo) in June, and now get way more service for less money. All I really lost, which I don't miss much, is roaming, call forwarding (for GoogleVoice VM), and more voice minutes than I could use.
T-Mobile's making all the right moves with their UnCarrier initiative and gaining subscribers fast. Hope they don't end up bogging their network down like Sprint did.
Switch and don't look back, sprint is crap.

Like everyone here, Pull the trigger.
I was on sprint using an iphone (yaya, whatever) for the price we paid or well ANYONE pays... its not worth it. Even after EIP on phones with TMOBILE, the global data just makes it sweeter. This is honestly a must-have if your frequent traveler. Sprint gave me the run around for three months with "promises" and tried to keep me over sprint spark, yeah sure softbank has deep pockets, maybe softbank WILL turn sprint around properly...
But its all about the now, not the waiting game. You wont have the data connection issues on TMO like sprint, Global data/text was a huge asset overseas when I went to see family vs. when I was in verizon even few years back (They murder you with data fees on blackberry overseas) then the next trip I took I suffered without data (due to LTE bieng new and HTC Thunderbolt bieng...well CDMA/LTE Only).. *cough* Sprints same way. But this time around I was superduper happy.
My boyfriend in IL uses TMO as his internet REPLACEMENT! and we have never had issues with lag during P2P oldies like AOE2, SC, to newer titles like SC2 or even PS3 games or skyping AND gaming...etc. So I am overall impressed. Very low ping compared to big red even, color me impressed.
Unless your in a magical sprint spark city, with a tri-band device (which you dont) and dont care for coverage outside of that tiny area (This is to ANYONE with sprint) come over to team magenta. Team banana needs to think things through better for the future. Itll average $15~ difference at most for 40x the service.
Sometimes I think sprints techs are idiots, where I work we see around 10,000 guests at a single park alone. Sprint has a single short range tower serving two themeparks Which on a good day will go over 20K, Lets say 14K Average. This tower was the LAST tower to recieve LTE rollouts in the city, and this tower is ALWAYS so overloaded nobodys sprint devices work in the area 99% of time. Infact itll flipflop so much your battery will be gone within 4 hours of being in its service radius. Everytime I call its "no issues reported, youll get a call from a tech within 72hrs". 3 complaints, 2 months later? oh yeah no calls!
I explained ^ to the technician I did somehow manage to run down when they were doing tower maint since I can access the backlot, he knew it too but said he could only keep bringing issue up. There are no extenders owned by sprint within the parks. Verizon, TMO, AT&T All have short range towers & extenders WITHIN park grounds to deal with the loads of people hitting the towers.
Looking at TMOs tower on the grounds, it houses nearly same amount of equipment as the big players. Sprints using a low cap tower in a high cap zone nearly everywhere i go & has "good enough to be passable equipment".
Hell even AT&T where I live...theres a tower so huge its like a mini eiffel tower with blinking lights for planes & all for a low-density area but it covers some major ground with some pretty insane LTE speeds. Very nifty retro fitting.
sprints like... MORE TOWERS WITH BAD RANGE!!! GOGOGOGO!
Do it!

Sprint is the worst cellphone service provider, Consumer Reports says

Just jumped from sprint

After getting tired of the lack of data connection issues at sprint I jumped over to T-Mobile. While I'm sure it will be a better experience than I had at sprint, I would like to know how all your experiences have been

I love it man. I've never lost service. I live in Dayton Ohio and there's 4G LTE everywhere here.
Didn't realize how bad Sprint is until I switched to T-Mobile last year......

So far my phone hasn't dropped to 3g yet. I think I like this

I do a lot of traveling for work and I used to be a Sprint subscriber as well. I will say that while T-Mobile's speeds are definitely better, Sprint has a better overall network IMO. I often find myself either struggling to find T-Mobile signal, Roaming on AT&T (If it even lets me), or I'm forced to deal with horrible 2G speeds (GPRS). Outside of major cities the majority of the coverage areas are 2G whereas on Sprint it is mostly 3G because if you had to roam you were on Verizon. If you thought Sprint's 3G was slow, wait until you experience T-Mobile's 2G lol.
If you generally reside in or around the larger cities then you have nothing to worry about. My experience is based on what I see everywhere I go... and I go to some pretty remote places and lots of smaller towns. Also, keep in mind that my experience with Sprint was before they implemented Spark and HD Voice, but being as a resident of San Antonio I did get to experience most of what their "Network Vision" had to offer.
As a matter of fact, the images in my signature were from when I was using Sprint. It was shortly after they first implemented LTE... And I lived approximately 45 miles outside of the city in the country. Those were some damn good speeds for being so far out, but I only lived about 1 mile from the tower lol. I only get 2G with T-Mobile out there and the 3G cuts off about 5 miles shy of that town. BUT, before switching to T-Mobile the Sprint speeds in that area had gone way down as more and more people got LTE phones. Last I checked, it was down to 7Mb/s Down and 2Mb/s Up.
Where I live north of San Francisco sprint had some areas of decent 4g but not at my house or at work. It also seems like the battery in my t mobile m8 lasts much longer. Maybe having a strong signal helps

former sprint customer, totally thrilled with T Mobile in the Chicago area...Even though Chicago was one of the first places with Sprint's "new" network, we left them 6 months ago when my wife and son couldn't even make phone calls from our house with their M7 phones; ever since we went TMO, we've never dropped a call anywhere in Chicagoland, data speeds are great, and their customer service has been fantastic for us.
towards the end of having sprint, we definitely noticed a change in how they treated customers, obviously a new way of doing things brought over by their new owners...much less likely to issue credits for problems, and even had the nerve to charge us TAX on our cancellation fees!!
Sorry Sprint, NEVER again, and if you merge with TMO, we will leave for another option.

Are you in La Vernia? If so T-Mobile will finally be upgrading the 2G to LTE in the next few months! I'm in San ANtonio too and hate that there is no LTE or 4G down 87 all the way until you hit Victoria.
I was with Sprint for about 12 years and just finally got fed up waiting for them to figure out how to get 4G rolled out properly, so I switched to TM when I purchased the M8 a few months ago.
Now that I'm on TM, I kick myself for not switching over sooner. With unlimited everything and the fact that 4G is so fast in my area, I don't even bother with switching on wifi. (I rarely stream video to the phone, so no real need for wifi)

I'm here in beaver creek and I'm literally just outside of the coverage area, I get lte but 5mbs down and about 4 up. But out and about I'm finally getting up to about 26mbs down.
I was with Sprint for over 10 years, then about a year and a half ago i switched to T-Mobile. Im so glad i did. I live in a major metropolitan area so coverage is always good for me.
As others have mentioned living in suburbs or travelling might get you some dead spots. So try the network out and then make a final decision.
My m8 gets great reception but my Daughters iPhone 5s is not so good. I guess that's what she gets for using an iPhone....... Right

in case anyone is curious about tmobile coverage in their area, they have a free, 7 day, "test drive" now, where they will let you use a iPhone for 7 days for free on their network, and you can see if their network meets your approval...

My family lives west of SA off HWY 90 in Castroville.
T-Mobiles network runs circles around Sprints! I was with sprint for the last 7 or 8 years and was tired of the "We are working on the towers in your area" excuse. I switched to T-Mobile back in February and got the Z1s and I plan on getting the M8 this week with the jump program. I had the M7 with sprint which was a great phone despite sprint's crappy network. I can't wait to be back with a htc phone!

almost the same exact story from me; as far as leaving Sorint in February because of the horrible network issues.
did you get on tmo for the old jump, before feb 23rd?
I did, and have had a lg flex,(actually 3 of them), and I too can't wait to be back on a HTC phone, for a variety of reasons..

Yeah I got on around February 6th, what did they change after that?
Sent from my C6916 using Tapatalk
the "new" jump, for those that signed up after Feb 23rd, requires you to pay 1/2 of the outstanding balance on your "old" phone, before you can "jump" to a new one. You can do that as often as you want, but it will cost you 1/2 of the outstanding balance on your phone.
the "old" jump, that you and I are on, doesn't have that requirement; we can jump once after 6 months at no charge, and then jump a second time anytime within our first year at no extra charge as well..
I'm getting an M8 next week for my first jump, and then I will wait and see what comes out in the next few months and see; note 4, Sony Z3, htc one max M8, who knows what is coming between now and December..
