Switch to TMo? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hello all,
I am thinking of leaving Sprint and going Tmo. I don't have the greatest service in my house and currently have a Airwave. I checked Sensorly and it looks like Tmo may not be strong around my house also. I understand Tmo has wifi calling. I was wondering of I could get input on how it is working? Any issues with it?
Also how is your cell service? I'm located in Los Angeles (So Bay).
Thank you

I just did the leap two days ago.
I'm in Pasadena, and work in Santa Monica... Let me tell you. It's the best decision I've ever made.
Sprint is horrible, with constant slow data speeds, and disconnects.
I now get 4g LTE everywhere I go, including my daily commute on the 10fwy.
Do it. This phone is awesome and you deserve the 4G speeds
Edit- I was a sprint loyal customer for 10years

I switched from at&t a couple months ago and am glad I did. I get a more consistent signal in my house (near downtown Cincinnati) and wifi calling works really well. .. Just make sure you have a strong even signal in your house, because the call will drop if you walk into an area with weak coverage. The only thing I'm disappointed with is the lack of lte in this market. Everyone wise has it but us an from what I've read, it could be because another local provider blocking deployment. .. Not sure if it will be a deal breaker yet, although Verizon and att are too expensive to go to. .

The Walmart exclusive T-Mobile no contract plan is the best. $30 per month 5gigs high speed data then throttled after 5gigs. Unlimited text but only 100mins. I use google voice anyway paired with a VoIP then you have free calling. I just keep my out on swappa for a good used gsm phone. I am forever done with contracts.

Do it! I just left sprint a month ago for the note 3 and I couldn't be happier.

I'm back in the UK and Wi - Fi calling to the state's have been flawless. Free texts and 3G Web which is still manageable for Emails and browsing. But back to the subject: Wi - fi calling works great.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk

The WiFi calling on the Note3 is a little buggy atm; there's already been OTA updates for the other carriers that fix it. I've disabled it both because it's buggy on my high-strength WiFi (echos, drops, CallerID;61 bug, etc), and because I don't really need it in NYC as T-Mobile is everywhere (except deep inside buildings and in basements)
I switched from AT&T (~$75/mo inc taxes&fees) to T-Mobile's prepaid ($30/mo) in June, and now get way more service for less money. All I really lost, which I don't miss much, is roaming, call forwarding (for GoogleVoice VM), and more voice minutes than I could use.
T-Mobile's making all the right moves with their UnCarrier initiative and gaining subscribers fast. Hope they don't end up bogging their network down like Sprint did.

Switch and don't look back, sprint is crap.

I switched months ago from Sprint and never looked back, Sprint is total crap. Phoenix is still without LTE from Sprint, but Tmo has pretty good coverage. At my house I actually get faster LTE than I do cable Internet!

Like everyone here, Pull the trigger.
I was on sprint using an iphone (yaya, whatever) for the price we paid or well ANYONE pays... its not worth it. Even after EIP on phones with TMOBILE, the global data just makes it sweeter. This is honestly a must-have if your frequent traveler. Sprint gave me the run around for three months with "promises" and tried to keep me over sprint spark, yeah sure softbank has deep pockets, maybe softbank WILL turn sprint around properly...
But its all about the now, not the waiting game. You wont have the data connection issues on TMO like sprint, Global data/text was a huge asset overseas when I went to see family vs. when I was in verizon even few years back (They murder you with data fees on blackberry overseas) then the next trip I took I suffered without data (due to LTE bieng new and HTC Thunderbolt bieng...well CDMA/LTE Only).. *cough* Sprints same way. But this time around I was superduper happy.
My boyfriend in IL uses TMO as his internet REPLACEMENT! and we have never had issues with lag during P2P oldies like AOE2, SC, to newer titles like SC2 or even PS3 games or skyping AND gaming...etc. So I am overall impressed. Very low ping compared to big red even, color me impressed.
Unless your in a magical sprint spark city, with a tri-band device (which you dont) and dont care for coverage outside of that tiny area (This is to ANYONE with sprint) come over to team magenta. Team banana needs to think things through better for the future. Itll average $15~ difference at most for 40x the service.
Sometimes I think sprints techs are idiots, where I work we see around 10,000 guests at a single park alone. Sprint has a single short range tower serving two themeparks Which on a good day will go over 20K, Lets say 14K Average. This tower was the LAST tower to recieve LTE rollouts in the city, and this tower is ALWAYS so overloaded nobodys sprint devices work in the area 99% of time. Infact itll flipflop so much your battery will be gone within 4 hours of being in its service radius. Everytime I call its "no issues reported, youll get a call from a tech within 72hrs". 3 complaints, 2 months later? oh yeah no calls!
I explained ^ to the technician I did somehow manage to run down when they were doing tower maint since I can access the backlot, he knew it too but said he could only keep bringing issue up. There are no extenders owned by sprint within the parks. Verizon, TMO, AT&T All have short range towers & extenders WITHIN park grounds to deal with the loads of people hitting the towers.
Looking at TMOs tower on the grounds, it houses nearly same amount of equipment as the big players. Sprints using a low cap tower in a high cap zone nearly everywhere i go & has "good enough to be passable equipment".
Hell even AT&T where I live...theres a tower so huge its like a mini eiffel tower with blinking lights for planes & all for a low-density area but it covers some major ground with some pretty insane LTE speeds. Very nifty retro fitting.
sprints like... MORE TOWERS WITH BAD RANGE!!! GOGOGOGO!

Do it!

The speeds on my sg3 in chicago are horrible

Anyone having same issues the 3g speeds are horrible
Im on my SG3
My speeds have been varying.
Sometimes I'll be at 1900kbps which is good but then it'll drop down to a piss-poor 1000kbps sometimes, even when it's midnight and nobody is using it.
Chicago is a particularly bad market for Sprint data. Luckily for you though, that means that Chicago is one of the first cities to get Network Vision. The process is well underway there now. All of the exurbs and some of the suburbs have many of their towers upgraded. There is an incompatibility issue between the old equipment and the new equipment, so handoffs for data, and especially voice, have a high failure rate. So things have been getting worse rather than better. Because of that unforseen issue, Sprint is speeding up the rollout in Chicago.
Expect LTE and good 3G to come within the next few months.

I guess just reiterating what a few others have said, but Network Vision is the culprit here. It's not like Sprint's service was great in Chicago before, but it's been horrid over the past few months. However, once the Chicago rollout is complete, I believe it'll be the best coverage in the area by far.
You just gotta stick with it a little while longer. Some people report that calling them up and explaining what's going on will get you a discount on your bill.
I'm right by the Loyola campus on Sheridan. In my apt I don't receive calls at all. And texts come extremely late. After dealing with techs for days in and out they finally are crediting my account 25 bucks a month for 4 months. Wow. This sucks.

Sprint vs Tmobile. If you could switch.

Ive been with Sprint for a year, and Ive been putting up with there slow network for a couple of months. Im trying to give Sprint a fair chance to launch LTE in my area( there suppose to start network vision this month) before I start making a decision. I have no prblem buying my device outright so Tmobiles value plan woould save me some money (no i dont want the galaxy nexus, its already last year tech and i would like to see what happens for the holiday season or how the beastly the next nexus is) and i had them before so I know how the service is in my area. My question is if some of you had a chance to switch to tmobile (or some other carrier) rite now or by the end of your contract would you switch.
Sprints in a much better position than tmobile in terms of spectrum and network upgrades. In a year or so sprint will be up there on par with Verizon. If you're in an LTE area, you have unlimited and lte.
Tmobile is good in major cities in terms of data speeds, but I think their building penetration and voice over gsm technology aren't too good. Sprint can roam on Verizon so in theory you have so much coverage.
Tmobile has unlimted data and Tmobiles future position will allow them to roam with at&t 3G/3.75G network and use unlocked devices in there network natively (since the pcs 1900 DC-HSPA+ refarm) and on top of that since their using aws for LTE they can roam on Verizons and at&t future LTE network. So, Tmobile is looking good as well, plus they could always sign with clearwire for extra bandwidth.

Bump. Anybody else have thoughts?
Very tempted. 7 years with Sprint but the prospect of International unlocked phones unlimited data and no contract is attractive.
let's face it sprints data speeds suck. I've been on LTE since it went live and the coverage is too spotty to be effective. Ends up being just a faster mostly 3G experience with frequent loss of connection due to constant 1x, 3G, LTE handoff.

I switched to T-Mobile for six months last year but I couldn't stand it. I could only get a decent signal if I was outside or near a large window. I came back to Sprint and would rather deal with "slow" speeds than have faster speeds that are severely limited by location.
I'm in the St. Louis area but if T-Mo has great coverage where you are and you can't wait for Sprint's network then you should choose maroon.

Sprint is still working in Atlanta. You'll have LTE everywhere you get 3g when it's finished. Sprint also has HD voice, which is where gsm is lacking.
LTE will have a crystal clear voice with VoLTE and IMS plus I dont care about voice quality cause i mostly text or dont use minutes at all. I mostly use data only anway.

well in overall its a matter of choice, personally ive been with sprint for about 7 years now non-stop, yeah ive had some issues with connectivity and signal loss but very rarely...not enought to make me wanna swich to another carrier, now only reason why im still with sprint is for 3 reasons, 1 is verizon, 2 is AT&T huge desapointing networks very expensive and very limited to their service data plans. now T-mobile does have great service and cheaper plans, but u gotta pay extra just to get 4g if u wanna use it for longer times, and now that 4g LTE is coming i can garantee u that their data plan is gonna sky high up the roof, not by much but it will go up i can garantee u that. so if i had my choice betwen does 2, limited 4g LTE or unlimited 4g LTE, id still stick with sprint, ive hadnt had any issues with their CS ive actually had great customer services no problems their althought maybe 2 or 3 every now and then in a blue moon that didnt know jack sh**. i can deal with the slow 3g i barely get 1.5mb/s over here without LTE still waiting for LTE which hasnt been listen just yet in my area but comming soon. if i can listen to music on pandora, watch netflix and surf the web at decent speeds without taking 10 seconds to load a page and have any interruptions then im happy enought and can deal with it. thats why i got wifi waiting for me back home when i get there so i can download does big files that i know i wont be able to download in seconds. until LTE arrives.

I've been with Sprint for 7 years and all I have to say is that 3g does suck compared to ATT but at least I have unlimited 4G which I use at least 5+GB's worth a month. Okay 4G is spotty but I'm only paying about $70 a month and super slow 3g is my only complaint. Mostly connected to wifi anyways and have never had a dropped call.

I was with t mobile for about 7 years before I switched to Sprint. Only reason I switched, was my company put me on their plan and started to pay for the bill. That being said, I think t mobile was hands down better than Sprint. (I'm in the Atlanta area btw). T mobile had extremely better data speeds 99 percent of the time. Reception is about the same. My gf still has t mobile and I check mine vs hers all the time. Every once in a while I'll get a decent data speed, but usually t mobile is faster. If I had to pay for my own line, I would switch back to t mobile in a heart beat. Better service, better data, upgrades every year (even let me do my upgrades every 6 months if you call their customer service).

I don't like the fact that T-Mo outsources CS jobs.
Honestly if i do decide to switch to Tmobile, i wouldnt be apposed to coming back to Sprint if I had to. (Tmobile goes bankrupt, I move and Tmobiles coverage is bad.. etc) Sprint has a god network vision strategy theyre moving slow and there wont be any real results of network vision until 2015, after most markets will be complete and they phase out iden for use of the 800mhz band for LTE-A. Also Clearwire should have a good LTE-A coverage by then.

if that is true that t-mobile does have better service and better data, then whats stopping u from switching back to t-mobile, despite that ure company is paying for sprints service, that shouldnt stop yah from switching...the fact of the matter is...if u really wanted to switch to t-mobile u would have and just spent that money out of ure pocket, im sure u earn well enought to pay for it on ure own, other whize u wouldnt be saying that. as for upgrades u can also do ure upgrades every year with sprint as well.

Tmobile sucks

T-Mobile is really spotty in some states thought they had better coverage

Well the technology you're 'on' isn't outdated and if the tmobile rep says that shouldn't be the case probably means that there's some other issue. And do you usually have bad service? I probably wouldn't change service since it's poor in an area your visiting temporarily... If it's not bad service where you usually live... I got only EDGE while visiting my dad. My reaction was to be stoked because I expected only GPRS or nothing at all. It's not like I'm there very often - it doesn't really matter. Even if he lived a few miles over in the "major city" nearby, it's not like I'm there for a significant portion of my life. That'd be like cancelling my service if it was crap when I was visiting my grandparents in Massachusetts - I'm there.. what, a week a year ? Whoopee. Unless you're in college and visiting this family for months at a time... what's the big deal ?
And paying $100/mo on T-Mobile ? Why ? How ? I went with T-Mobile because I DIDN'T want that kind of ridiculous bill - and because they specifically offer plans that aren't that high.
They have an unlimited everything pre-paid for $70/mo - still lower than others. I'm on the $30/mo pre-paid plan.

Ok cool so its not just me from what it sounds like. Now I know why t mobile is losing a lot of there post paid accounts most likely from there spotty network
I came from 2 years on att to simple mobile but I can speak on the t mobile signal quality. Compared to att, it should be known that t mobile service is a heck more spotty than others and your data will suffer big time. I went to the middle of no where a few months back with a friend that had att, I had 1 bar and edge in an open field while he had 2 bars with hspa+. He didn't have an lte phone at the time but from experience, att has better coverage. In the same areas t mobile is said to have good coverage and truthfully, although t mobile will roll out lte, I doubt it will be as good. I searched for their new towers, and they have over 10 new ones in Manhattan all clustered up so yeah, t mobile has the best coverage in the ny central park region. Going back to att when I get a job and am able to pay for my own cell. For the time being, simply mobile works good. T mobile will be getting better and better through the years

Sorry but I like things to work when I pay 500 out of pocket for a phone. Your phone should be running tip top in every major city no reason for this in 2013. Do some research about t mobile they lost a good bit of post paid customers so Im not the only one that thinks their trash. Their also one of the 3rd most hated companies in the US. I follow them on google plus if anyone needs some citations.
How can you be one of the 3rd? Arent you either 3rd or you are not?

Good riddance, go pay more for the same service on VZW like all the other dummies, more bandwidth for me, not that I'm lacking any here

Has anyone here come over from Sprint?

Im in the Los Angeles area and after 10 years of being with Sprint, Ive finally come to my wits end. The data is awful. Ive had a ppc6600, ppc 6700, HTC Diamond, Treo 800w, Palm Pre, Samsung Moment, HTC Evo, Evo3d, Galaxy S2, and S3. Ive been a sprint advocate for years now, probably gotten at least 6 people to switch to sprint. But I cant just deal with the dropped calls and slow data. No, its not my phone, my rom, etc. Its just Sprint. I called cust service to cancel and based on my call-connection ratio, they've decided to let me out of my contract without paying the ETF. I had to bring in my phone for one last diagnostic check, and the tech said its not my phone, its the network, and he totally understands me leaving. Im seriously considering T-Mobile for obvious reasons, but I was just wondering if anyone could share their experience with switching from Sprint. Preferably in the L.A. area, but Im open to hear other experiences. Are you happy? Is the cust service good? Mainly is the 4g data as fast/faster/more consistent?
I've recently had a few trips to L.A. and didn't have any issues with dropped calls or signal strength. The customer service is decent.
You could always go to T-Mobile's website and check the coverage map if your worried about the coverage.
I've had sprint....never going back lol.

He can't make phone calls inside our house. can't judge data cuz he's using tmo service with skyrocket so only receives edge. Even when we go down to that area for any reason, he has at most 3-4 bars while my at&t s3 has full with lte. Good luck in your choice.

Thanks for all the responses! In the past 2 days I heard negative feedback about t-mobile from radioshack, target, and best buy. They all said its worse than sprint, and that's why they don't carry T-Mobile anymore. I do realize that of course they are going to badmouth the company they don't sell, but I must admit I'm more confused now than ever on what to do.

Best bet is to find people around you with tmo. Friends, family, coworkers. Anyone, just ask around.
I had sprint and switched. Sprint's coverage along pch is better than tmo, but Sprint's data sucks ass. By default tmo phones have built in WiFi calling to help with bad coverage in the mountain areas. Without WiFi calling you'll still have good coverage in most populated areas. Tmos customer service is better and their prices are comparable.
Long story short, switch dude. Tmo is better in LA.
I semi gave up on Sprint. By that I mean I dumped them and went to Ting. No, it doesn't change the piss poor data rates but the lower cost makes it a bit more acceptable.
Testing TMo right now, actually its mvno Solavei. Data rates are much better BUT coverage isn't as widespread as Ting (Sprint). For now I'll keep both in case I find myself out of territory on either.

+1 I have had T-Mobile in San Diego. Decent Coverage Decent Data. LA has quiet a lot of coverage from them. I have been with T-mobile for 9 years. I have made others switch to T-mo as well. I will not even think about switching to others.
As to the Radioshack and others crappy feedback, know this, These Sales guys get hefty commission for pushing VZW and Sprint. They don't probably get as much commission from T-Mo. So it is in their interest that you don't switch to T-Mo.
Here's T-Mo's Coverage map. Enter your address and it will tell you what kind of coverage you will get.
Lol! That just reminded me....
Anyone see Verizon's recent commercial? They had the coverage maps and theirs was the only one you could tell was for the US. When they show T-Mobile's LTE coverage it's this tiny little bit, less than anyone else, but you have to pay very close attention! It's not T-Mobile's coverage, it's labeled T-Mobile/Metro PCS!
So their only showing metros LTE coverage, but since T-Mobile bought them, Verizon labeled it with T-Mobile to trick people into thinking they were showing tmo's coverage instead!
To me this says a few things!
T-Mobile LTE is more of a competitor than people give credit for.
Verizon must be getting desperate to resort to tactics like this!
Sorry to go a little OT. But it can be relevant in that the other carriers don't want to show T-Mobile's actual LTE offerings. They have been expanding and upgrading like crazy the past few years, and are continuing to do so. So don't write them off if someone says their service was terrible a few years ago. It may be completely irrelevant now.

Just jumped from sprint

After getting tired of the lack of data connection issues at sprint I jumped over to T-Mobile. While I'm sure it will be a better experience than I had at sprint, I would like to know how all your experiences have been

I love it man. I've never lost service. I live in Dayton Ohio and there's 4G LTE everywhere here.
Didn't realize how bad Sprint is until I switched to T-Mobile last year......

I do a lot of traveling for work and I used to be a Sprint subscriber as well. I will say that while T-Mobile's speeds are definitely better, Sprint has a better overall network IMO. I often find myself either struggling to find T-Mobile signal, Roaming on AT&T (If it even lets me), or I'm forced to deal with horrible 2G speeds (GPRS). Outside of major cities the majority of the coverage areas are 2G whereas on Sprint it is mostly 3G because if you had to roam you were on Verizon. If you thought Sprint's 3G was slow, wait until you experience T-Mobile's 2G lol.
If you generally reside in or around the larger cities then you have nothing to worry about. My experience is based on what I see everywhere I go... and I go to some pretty remote places and lots of smaller towns. Also, keep in mind that my experience with Sprint was before they implemented Spark and HD Voice, but being as a resident of San Antonio I did get to experience most of what their "Network Vision" had to offer.
As a matter of fact, the images in my signature were from when I was using Sprint. It was shortly after they first implemented LTE... And I lived approximately 45 miles outside of the city in the country. Those were some damn good speeds for being so far out, but I only lived about 1 mile from the tower lol. I only get 2G with T-Mobile out there and the 3G cuts off about 5 miles shy of that town. BUT, before switching to T-Mobile the Sprint speeds in that area had gone way down as more and more people got LTE phones. Last I checked, it was down to 7Mb/s Down and 2Mb/s Up.
Where I live north of San Francisco sprint had some areas of decent 4g but not at my house or at work. It also seems like the battery in my t mobile m8 lasts much longer. Maybe having a strong signal helps

former sprint customer, totally thrilled with T Mobile in the Chicago area...Even though Chicago was one of the first places with Sprint's "new" network, we left them 6 months ago when my wife and son couldn't even make phone calls from our house with their M7 phones; ever since we went TMO, we've never dropped a call anywhere in Chicagoland, data speeds are great, and their customer service has been fantastic for us.
towards the end of having sprint, we definitely noticed a change in how they treated customers, obviously a new way of doing things brought over by their new owners...much less likely to issue credits for problems, and even had the nerve to charge us TAX on our cancellation fees!!
Sorry Sprint, NEVER again, and if you merge with TMO, we will leave for another option.

Are you in La Vernia? If so T-Mobile will finally be upgrading the 2G to LTE in the next few months! I'm in San ANtonio too and hate that there is no LTE or 4G down 87 all the way until you hit Victoria.
I was with Sprint for about 12 years and just finally got fed up waiting for them to figure out how to get 4G rolled out properly, so I switched to TM when I purchased the M8 a few months ago.
Now that I'm on TM, I kick myself for not switching over sooner. With unlimited everything and the fact that 4G is so fast in my area, I don't even bother with switching on wifi. (I rarely stream video to the phone, so no real need for wifi)

I'm here in beaver creek and I'm literally just outside of the coverage area, I get lte but 5mbs down and about 4 up. But out and about I'm finally getting up to about 26mbs down.
I was with Sprint for over 10 years, then about a year and a half ago i switched to T-Mobile. Im so glad i did. I live in a major metropolitan area so coverage is always good for me.
As others have mentioned living in suburbs or travelling might get you some dead spots. So try the network out and then make a final decision.
My m8 gets great reception but my Daughters iPhone 5s is not so good. I guess that's what she gets for using an iPhone....... Right

in case anyone is curious about tmobile coverage in their area, they have a free, 7 day, "test drive" now, where they will let you use a iPhone for 7 days for free on their network, and you can see if their network meets your approval...

My family lives west of SA off HWY 90 in Castroville.
T-Mobiles network runs circles around Sprints! I was with sprint for the last 7 or 8 years and was tired of the "We are working on the towers in your area" excuse. I switched to T-Mobile back in February and got the Z1s and I plan on getting the M8 this week with the jump program. I had the M7 with sprint which was a great phone despite sprint's crappy network. I can't wait to be back with a htc phone!

almost the same exact story from me; as far as leaving Sorint in February because of the horrible network issues.
did you get on tmo for the old jump, before feb 23rd?
I did, and have had a lg flex,(actually 3 of them), and I too can't wait to be back on a HTC phone, for a variety of reasons..

Yeah I got on around February 6th, what did they change after that?
Sent from my C6916 using Tapatalk
the "new" jump, for those that signed up after Feb 23rd, requires you to pay 1/2 of the outstanding balance on your "old" phone, before you can "jump" to a new one. You can do that as often as you want, but it will cost you 1/2 of the outstanding balance on your phone.
the "old" jump, that you and I are on, doesn't have that requirement; we can jump once after 6 months at no charge, and then jump a second time anytime within our first year at no extra charge as well..
I'm getting an M8 next week for my first jump, and then I will wait and see what comes out in the next few months and see; note 4, Sony Z3, htc one max M8, who knows what is coming between now and December..
