ATT SGS3 MTP Driver Issue - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I bought the SGS3 from the ATT store last Friday and when I attempted to connect it to my computer, all drivers install just fine except for the MTP driver. I tried everything from :
- different usb cables
- different ports
- uninstalling/reinstalling the samsung usb drivers
- uninstalling/reinstalling kies
- running the kies troubleshooter and rebooting
- factory reset of my phone
- connecting to another computer
I just exchanged the phone out after contacting samsung support and going back to the att store. Unfortunately, even this device still gets me the same error.
I saw a few threads out there like this but none seem to have failed on every method like mine has.
I am not sure if anyone has any insight or ideas as to what else I could possibly try. I love this phone but I really am not interested in just using Kies wi-fi all the time or transferring everything to the cloud then back to my phone.
I appreciate any help or support anyone can provide.

looks like it doesn't work properly if usb debugging is turned on. turn that off and try plugging it in. thats what worked for me.

Still no luck
No dice. I have tried that before, but tried it again just now for kicks. Still no luck.

Nothing has worked
I guess this is goodbye for me with the SGS3. I looks like no one else has any ideas left for me to try.
I love the device but refuse to keep something that doesnt work. I have tried various PC's, this is the second device I have recieved as the last one had the same issue. I even reinstalled a copy of windows 7 and yet it still will not work. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

I'm sorry you're still having troubles, but don't give up quite so easily! Lots and lots and lots of people have this working, so there must be some solution for you, too.
First thing I would do is uninstall Kies and all your Samsung drivers. Delete C:\Program Files\SAMSUNG, too. Reboot. Then install the Samsung drivers downloaded from samsung.com (version 1.4.6.0). Reboot, just to be safe. Then unlock the screen of your phone and plug it into the computer.

Thanks for the support. Trust me when I say I have not given up without a battle.
I have tried what you stated multiple times. I even went as far as to clear the registry of anything with samsung in it.
I have tried a fresh windows 7 image. I have tried multiple computers. I have tried two phones now.
Its just very frustrating and I hate dealing with tech support because I get the same roundabout each time, ATT says to talk to Samsung, Samsung says to talk to ATT.
Oh well, such is life I guess.

It sounds like a cable or port problem, but you stated you tried multiple cables and ports... and computers. Is it only MTP that's not loading? Can you connect with adb, for example?
I'm about out of ideas. My only other suggestions are (1) try the universal naked drivers and (2) try one of the scripts to enable mass storage mode on the phone, to see if that works. I'm not sure what it means if it does, but if none of that works, I would blames your cables or computer(s).
Good luck!

Univesal drivers. Hmm, havent tried that. I would get those fromthe Samsung site I assume? Any special way to find them on the site? ( I know for the device specific, its the in the support and after you identify your device).
Also, what is the script to enable mass storage mode?
Thanks for the ideas!

The Universal Naked Drivers are here. There's an app for toggling between MTP and Mass Storage here which is based off the scripts described here.

It works now?

Ok. Not sure why, but here is what finally worked(btw, thanks again for the information dro).
I have tried factory resets before and it would fail. However, this time, I did a factory reset and did not login to google to restore data or settings. I then went straight to just connecting the device and voila. So I wonder if there was some residual setting stored on my account that was causing issues with the initial driver install.
Now it works!

USB Sync not working, Charge only

I am trying to upload a new ROM to my phone but i am having problems with it being recognised by my PC.
Firewall is switched off on my PC.
USB to PC settings on phone set to prompt me and default to ActiveSync.
PC not finding the Memory Card also as a drive.
Hard-Reset also performed with no joy.
Nothing is happening however other than charging. This is the same on all PC's i have tried.
Any ideas how i can get it working??

If you find a solution, tell me!
Mine won't sync either, no matter what I try, so I've resorted to using a BT USB for syncing/file transfer. I have to flash via SD card and won't be able to use Task29 until it's set up to work via SD card either.

You can enter bootloader and then plug in the usb. This way you don't need to sync with active sync Task29 runs this way.

Nope, that won't work for me. When I enter the bootloader, it says 'serial' in the white portion at the bottom instead of 'usb'. No amount of hard resets clears this up for me.
Thanks, though.

There's good news and bad...
I had this problem, the good news is that I think it's fixed now, the bad news is it involve a trip to HTC. I flashed back to stock and still had the problem, called HTC who agreed it was probably a h/w fault, they piucked it up, repaired it and it's in a UPS van on it's way back to me as I type.
Until it comes back I can't confirm they really have repaired it, or what they've done to fix it.

Thanks so much, Gordon. Please let me know how it worked out for you and what costs were involved.
I'm sure, at some point, I will have to bite the bullet and get mine fixed as well.

I have the same problem.
After all, I find that the USB port of the phone is bad, i.e. some pins are brocken.
After changing the USB port, I solved the problem.

Just to make sure, did you set Activesync to use the slower method? When I upgraded my ROM I had to use the slow method in order for my Windows 7 to see the new ROM.
guys i have the same prob and i bought it from USA unlocked Stock Asian Rom and Now i am in Pakistan.I had some major issues with it.It just stopped syncing one day.Have tried everything. The battery usage also increased dramatically(it dies in 10 hrs after a full recharge)I thought it was a virus but now i think its hardware.I think i'll send it for warranty claim.
I just went through this on my VZW TP2. A month ago it began syncing slowly or not at all, very sporadic, and after messing with it for two hours it began working again. I tried everything except a hard-reset, including reinstalling ActiveSync, changing cables, etc. It happened again earlier in the week and an hour with HTC on the phone couldn't revive it. I called VZW and had a new phone in two days, and we're now up and running again.
I tried BT sync at one time but didn't like having to click multiple times to get it going every time I got within range. There doesn't seem to be a way to have it sync automatically or with one button.
I have the Tmo TP2 and SAME issue, I luckily am getting a new one from Tmo, but I am really starting to think something more is going on here........... I am not convinced ALL OF US, even a lot on PPC geeks, same exact issue? different carriers? come on........... I am glad I am getting a new one, but I would really love to know the root cause of this. IT SEEMS VERY VERY VERY MUCH LIKE THE "TRANSFER DATA" option if "turned off" (if you will), not a physical hardware failure. Kinda like you can turn that option off in windows to not allow USB storage devices to connect, you can still connect other devices (mice, keyboards) or charge things (like our phone) but the computer will NOT see it there at all!!! I really think something like that is happening IN our phones!!! hundreds of us bend the same pin(s). Too wierd.
I hade the same problem!
After trying everything I finally opened up the phone. In the phone I found some dust particles on the usb pins on the board, I cleaned it up and now the sync works again.
NO Sync with Windows 7
I have the same issue with my Win 7 machine...... PC does not even see the Phone at all. Plug it into my Windows XP machine and it's perfect, connects everytime, using the same cable. i have tried everything i can find on the internet and multipal forums, still no Joy! Works great on Win xp, so i think it is a problem with win 7 drivers.....
Still searching for an answer........
Oh, by the way it was working for months, just stopped one day....i even wiped out my pc and reloaded it, no Joy!
I'm starting to have the same issues on my AT&T Tilt 2 but sporadically. Every now and then I lose the phone in MS activesync. I have to delicately place the phone on the table and gently insert the USB cable into the back of the phone in order for it to sync up with my PC. If I move any of the cables or phone, it will drop the connection. I tied several different cables and PC's so I ruled that out. The problem seems to be the USB port on the phone.
Its been almost a year since I've had this phone so I want to get that fixed. If I were to call AT&T and inform them of this would they replace the phone or would they fix the problem with the port and send me the phone back?

I'm not sure what your warranty is from AT&T, but HTC normally has a 15 month warranty on the device. Go through AT&T if you can first. The carriers will normally ship you a replacement device before you send yours in. HTC's repair process is generally very lengthy as they actually repair your device and then send it back to you rather than shipping you a refurbished unit like carriers normally do.
As far as it not connecting, try a different connection method like BirdieSync and Thunderbird. I use this combo on my PC (W7 Pro x64), and it works wonderfully every time.

[Q] Is my phone's USB port bad?

I'm pretty sure that the USB port on my phone has gone bad, but in a strange way. When plugged in, Windows device manager shows an Unknown Device. Looking around the Internet, this or similar problems seem to have happened to quite a few people, but none of the suggested solutions have worked for me. I have tried 2 different cables on 3 different PCs, even one with a fresh install of Windows. I have tried my default ROM of CM7 RC2 and nightly 21 as well as warm 2.2. Even in recovery or fastboot, it still is not recognized. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the newest HTC sync for USB drivers. Even when I manually pick the drivers in device manager, Windows tells me the drivers are not appropriate for my device. ADB devices does not show anything because the phone is not recognized, and the phone itself does not give me any connection options when plugged in, though it will charge. This seems to have have started happening when I used some compressed air in the HDMI port to clean it out for HDMwIn. Maybe something got knocked loose in the usb port.
What do you guys think? Did I kill it/is it dead? If so, will Sprint likely help me if I revert to stock and take it in?

Absolutely. Unroot, flash a stock rom, then take it to a sprint repair center. Your phone has a one year warranty for things just like this
My phone used to do the same thing. Actually... I've had 3 different EVOs do it, but only on my Windows 7 laptop. It works fine for other computers. It started working randomly one day & now it's fine.
Were all three of those computers Windows 7?
Unfortunately no. Two were 7, one was a totally clean install of XP. Either way, totally stock now with s-on. Back to Sprint I go after work.

MTP and Linux mess

I find it unacceptable that a Linux based operating system has so much difficulty connecting/mounting to the most popular Linux package out there (ubuntu). After 3 hours of searching and trying different methods I gave up. Was doing it remotely for a friend in a different state but I doubt that made a difference. Am I missing an easy fix here? I don't want to use androids or whatever that app is. Also gMtp won't allow any transfer gives errors.

Agreed. However, I found that this method worked for me.
There seems to be an issue with copying over an existing file on the android device which throws an error, but if you delete the file on the phone first, then copy all is good.
Not ideal, but a whole lot better than I was expecting!
Hope this helps.

I've never liked the idea of USB transfers, plugging in cables is too much like manual labor
You can install an SSH server on your phone and then use sshfs on your PC to connect to it. The real bonus is it's a much better way to get to a terminal on your phone as well.
For really large files you can also transfer using a USB memory stick with the right cable and software.
I barely ever plug my phone in. I use both airdroid and filexpert (both in market) to do web or http file transfers!
Just my preference.

OTA file transfer is fine but requires unlimited data plan. I'm looking for an old fashioned usb connection. I never thought I'd say this but I am just about to "miss" Gingerbread.
Put the device in Camera (PTP) mode and it works fine. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only drawback is that you can't transfer files over 4GB?
I see you're running Ubuntu, try this if the above method doesn't work well for you: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/how-to-easily-mount-the-galaxy-nexus-on-ubuntu-11-10-via-unity/

That seems to be a popular method but was not successful. I was doing it remotely for a friend and will do it again when I see him next month.
Also, the PTP appears not to show the whole 32 GB partition. I can't be sure since I was working on it via teamviewer and did not have my hand on the phone.
I agree with the OP that this is a PITA. In the past I have done the majority of my transfers to my phone via wifi anyway, but transferring HD video to the phone would be considerably faster via a wired connection. I admit that I did not try to hard to get it working after the first few times (most tutorials on the web seem focused on 11.10 and I use 10.04), and have just resorted to wifi transfers.

MTP and PTP both show only the contents of sdcard/media I suspect this is intended to stop end users breaking their phone.
I've moved to airdroid - it needs to have the computer and the phone on the same wireless network and uses that network, it doesn't use a carrier so shouldn't use any of your data allowance.
I agree it's suboptimal but no-one here is responsible for the decision to make the GN without a fat32 partition.
HeyItsLou has some good for getting MTP working on 11.10. He's pulled the updated source from the 12.04 repos and has a nice tutorial for getting it working. http://ohheyitslou.blogspot.com/2011/12/galaxy-nexus-enable-mtp-file-transfer.html
damn, just use adb push already. or like someone said, a ssh server on the phone. edit config to limit only to a known ip or mac address,
or even better, ask for help in google groups, or check aosp bug tracker. 3hrs to solve or reach a conclusion is nothing.
/me sent this from a i9250 using tapatalk
It is indeed a big mess. I found a tutorial for using it with Fedora here: http://blog.offenders.org/?p=101 (I can't post links yet...)
It involves recompiling the mtpfs drivers, and it still doesn't work 100%.
I've also tried doing a 'reverse tether', i.e. connecting the USB cable and selecting 'Settings/More/Tethering.../USB tethering'. Then (if you run an SSH server on the phone) you can connect using SSH over the USB cable.
Unfortunately it's still a bit clunky, and I frequently find myself connecting to a Windows machine instead, just to avoid the trouble.
Adb push would be OK for me but this is for those I've setup with ubuntu and preached a no "windows" world to. I'll try the airdroid for him but we need a simpler solution. I usually setup these computers as a dual boot of xp/vista/7 and ubuntu 11.04. I guess as it was suggested is better to boot into Windows transfer the files and then get out. Ughhh

I tried this, but I got some errors saying that it couldn't find the packages at the beginning of his blog post. I tried continuing on (since I saw that I had the packages installed)... the really odd thing is that once in mounts (eventually) and I go into my Nexus folder, the only folder I see is Playlists, and that folder is empty.
EDIT: I got this working. I had to track down the packages and download them to a local folder and install from there. Then I rebooted and ran Lou's script again. I'm seeing all my folders now. If you JUST see "Playlists" it means you don't have the right packages.

Any way to temporarily Disable SE on galaxy S3 with android 4.4?

Hello. I have a Galaxy S3 (SGH-I747 on Rogers Canada) with android 4.4 - stock/not rooted. The other day I hooked up my S3 to my laptop using a USB cable. My laptop is running Win XP SP3. I COPIED ALL the pictures from the phone to the Laptop. The pics were visible on BOTH my phone and my laptop when I finished the transfer. I am guessing it used Windows Media as the transfer medium as Kies was not running. While the phone was still linked to the Laptop I thought I would just delete the ones off the phone that I didn't want. I did so. I then unhooked the phone from the laptop. Ouch!!! The pictures I had deleted from the phone were missing from BOTH the phone and the laptop. First I checked the laptop trash bin. Nothing there. I then tried using the Recuva undelete software on my laptop disk as I thought there should be a deleted copy on the disk as they were visible on screen before I unplugged my phone. It recovered some 94k plus jpg's and I spent more than a day scanning them for the ones I needed. Nothing there. So I thought I needed to run an undelete on the phone. HA HA to that!!! It seems that in the android developers great wisdom the phone is no longer considered a mass storage device when hooked to a computer but is a media device. MY interpretation but something like that. Next I did a BUNCH of reading and made a bunch of phone calls for advice. I tried all kinds of tricks. I tried a number of android undelete programs. I had the USB debugging enabled but all the programs I tried didn't recover any deleted jpg's. Even the programs that said they could. It turns out that the phone HAS to be linked as a mass storage device with a drive letter for the android recovery software to work to recover jpg's. It seems to be able to find other file types but not jpg's.
Now here is the interesting part. I tried linking the phone to my desktop (XP SP3 also) and my laptop dozens of times hoping something would change. I believe that once on my desktop and once on my laptop it showed up as a mass storage device. I say "I believe" because I was so conditioned to it NOT showing as a mass storage device that both times I had already clicked on the icon that releases the phone from the computer before I realized there was a drive letter there. Anyway, the time on my laptop that it happened was around the time I had run one of the android file recovery programs. The program had not found any jpg files but when it finished my phone had a message something like "SE has been disabled". blah blah blah. I did a BUNCH more reading and researching about SE on my phone. The best I can figure is that it is a security enhancement designed to stop programs getting at, or changing things in, other programs on the phone and is set somewhere in the policies file - where ever that is.
My question is - Is it possible to temporarily disable SE so I can try and get my pictures back? Thank you, Derek-j

SElinux stands for "security enhanced Linux" and turning it to permissive will not do a lot I believe. However this app can enable UMS on your phone again. Here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mohammadag.samsungusbmassstorageenabler

Oooppss...not going to work. First off...my phone is stock and this requires rooting. I don't know much about rooting and don't have a problem trying it but I suspect that would likely over-write some or all of the deleted jpg's I want to recover thus defeating the purpose. The other and absolutely CRITICAL thing is that it does NOT enable USB for internal memory. You'd think that the GOOGLE developers would know better than to remove that important feature, especially in an (upgrade???). I had even thought of going back to one of the older versions but again I think that would destroy some of the file entries and delete the very pics I am trying to get back....
I REALLY DO APPRECIATE your trying to help though.
Have a FANTASTIC week. Derek-J.
So BACK TO SQUARE ONE...Anyone know how to temporarily disable the SE feature?

I don't think you can on Android 4.4 without root. Why not just go towel root your S3?
Yea there is not much you can do without root, sorry for your troubles

Verizon V30 can't change USB connection mode?

I ran into this problem while trying to do the WTF Bootloader unlock and Root method, as well as the Frankenstein phone...All the steps should work, except I can't even get the thing to allow itself to be detected by my computer.
I have read others with the VS996 who have done the WTF / Frankenphone methods without this issue.
I have plugged it in to the computer as I have with Android phones forever; it says "Charging" and gives no option to switch to MTP/File Transfer etc... I also go into the Developer Options to try and change this, I tap the setting that would usually allow you to switch it, and it opens no menu and acts as if there isn't one to be accessed. I've tried my Win7 and Win10 machines - same results each time. Also does not allow me to change USB mode while unplugged, or even enter download mode! I am using the USB cable that came with the phone, and have also tried other cables. I've cleaned the port on the phone, tried all USB ports on BOTH computers - still nothing. I've ever master reset the thing hoping it was a glitch , but it still will not let me change it out of "Charging" or even act like there's the ability to do so.
Did Verizon lock these things down so hard that you just can't use them like normal Android phones?
I have searched to an exhausting extent, I'm out of ideas... I don't use Verizon, so I really need to figure this out so it doesn't keep thinking it's still being used on the Verizon network. My service works, but it constantly says the SIM is not a Verizon SIM, and won't provision certain services (such as Emergency Calling) ... HELP!

No, Verizon hasn't locked this down.
You said you've already Master Reset your phone, so that's very strange.
I know you tried different computers/different cables/different ports -- but the only thing I can suggest is to try other different computers.
Plenty of VS996 owners on here have Frankenstein their phones. Some then reverted back to VS996 TWRP flashable zip, after bootloader unlock and root, to regain Verizon VoLTE as they are Verizon customers. But no one has had any trouble with USB connections.

No, Verizon hasn't locked this down.
1) I know you tried different computers, but other different computers.
2) Since either Frankenstein or WTF bootloader unlock is going to re-set your phone anyway, go ahead and do that now PRE-EMPTIVELY. Maybe going back to factory defaults will fix something.

I've factory reset. The problem is, it won't let me switch from Charging mode to File Transfer / MTP mode. It doesn't detect the computer and the computer doesn't detect it - doesn't give an option to switch USB mode, etc... See attached screenshots - that's what it looks like while connected to USB no matter what cable or PC it is connected to.
I'm actually trying to Frankenstein the phone, but can't even get past the part where the phone and computer need to communicate via USB because of the problem I'm having.
So I guess, has anybody ever had this problem and found out how to fix it? It's all I need so I can Frankenstein the phone.

I am finding this very strange too.
I don't have anymore computers to try.
Is it possible that it's still somehow tied to Verizon? It was recently used by a friend who gave it to me when he upgraded to a new phone. My calls / data work (I have to manually provision that) so it seems very odd that it won't full allow services / USB connections or even show the OEM Unlock option in the Developer Options.

I was editing my reply as you were replying. You had buried the important parts see the bottom, what all you tried.
No one else has any problems, to my knowledge. Tons of VS996 on this forum, who have Frankenstein'ed to US998 either permanently or temporarily to Bootloader Unlock and root.
All I can suggest is to try yet other PCs?
Other VS996 users can chime in, but I don't remember any reports of USB issues over the past couple of years.

I noticed that too, haha.
So isn't it supposed to let you switch USB mode even if not plugged in? When mine is plugged in or not, it acts as if the only option is "Charge" - if you look at the screenshots I attached, I've pull my top menu down where it should have a way to switch it from Charging to something else, but even that shows nothing... just charging, settings etc
I tried calling Verizon customer service just to see if they have some kind of security measure they sent over the air when my friend deactivated it from his account - but they're close, probably because of this COVID 19 thing (or they don't work on Sundays)...
@schwinn8, @nnjimmy59, @gimpy1
you all don't have any USB connection problems on your VS996, do you?
That's just three off the top of my head. We also had a Dev, TotallyAnxious who had VS996 for awhile and a very popular Anxious V30 mod -- but moved on to a newer phone a few months ago.
Never any mention of USB issues.

Well, my phones were not originally VS996. My personal phones were US998 purchases. The next two I purchased were H931. All of these converted via Frankenstein just fine. (One H931 had some issues, unrelated to the process - I believe it was a hardware problem with Verizon towers). That phone is now US998 running on ATT with no issues.
My wife and I are still running VS996 with no issues. I don't use USB much but I know it worked just fine last time I used it. I'm happy to test further if needed, but it sounds like this may be more of an issue with an originally-VS996 phone, as the OP is suggesting.
EDIT: To be clear, I don't think this is a real problem with the phone... probably just another "incompatible" computer/cable/USBport thing. So many people have these types of issues, and there's no guaranteed answer on what does/doesn't work. I'm happy to help if I can, though... I still have my older laptop which did all these steps just fine. I will say my new laptop (Ryzen) does NOT work on this process. I still have that older machine, in case it's needed again. If you love in the CT area, I'm happy to help first-hand...

OK. I'm pretty sure the others had original VS996, especially TotallyAnxious. I'm not going to officially mention her as she has moved on, but we communicated a lot when her Magisk mod was posted here.

I'm thinking it's probably because it's an original VS996 and Verizon is notorious for locking down their phones, even though they are carrier unlocked.
It wouldn't be a problem if I could just force the USB to work and get rid of all the Verizon programming...I'm really hoping someone out there has had to deal with this before and see this.

I'm gonna have to read through TotallyAnxious' old posts in hopes a solution can be found. Otherwise, not sure this phone will work for me.

I'll go back and re-read your posts again. (edited below after re-reading)
It's probably also worth mentioning that it won't enter Download Mode following the instructions found here : https://droidrecovery.com/lg-v30-recovery-mode/ (scroll down to "Boot LG V30 into Download Mode")
-edit- As far as incompatible cable/computer theory - I don't know...it's the cable that came with the phone when it was new. My other cable was from a Samsung Galaxy and both work with my Moto X4 (which is what I'm switching to the V30 from). All drivers are installed, no driver errors in Device Manager, etc...This is by far the most difficult phone I've tried to work with.

The button dance is notoriously difficult to get right. Try it a few times. Note, in the steps listed, it says to release then press the power button again... but it's not clear that you need to HOLD it, not just press it. At least, that's what I remember it to be. I only had to do it once... adb is so much easier.
I also want to point out that one of my original LG cables did not work either. Not sure why, but it didn't. The other one did... as did a third party cable. Again, the key for me was my older laptop. The new one does not work, no matter what I try. Granted, when I say it doesn't work, I mean it wouldn't do the unlock... the USB does detect fine and the phone does switch into the necessary USB mode.
Can you change the USB mode manually somewhere? Maybe it was set to "charging only" by mistake at some point? I think the popup asks and has a "remember" button... if that was selected, it may be continuing to use charge-only by default?
EDIT: Found it... in settings/system/developer options there is "select USB Configuration"... set that to PTP and see if that works to get you in.

I attached a screenshot in an earlier reply that shows what that looks like for me - I tap it and it does (literally) nothing. No menu, no option to switch - nothing at all - and that is actually the reason I posted here to begin with. I've never had this happen. It continues after multiple factory resets as well, and on the same computer I've successfully flashed other phones with.
This may be relevant? Maybe it's a Pie problem?

Different phone, but same symptoms.
Hi. Not sure if I can help any. But, here goes. I am on a Verizon vs996. Been a Verizon customer for years, still am. I have four phones on my plan, but I am the only rooted one. I rooted my phone about a year and a half or two years ago via Chazz 's Frankenstein method first, then the WTF method second. I currently use, for some time now, US998 rom (pie).
I did experience a couple of problems, but, carefully using/following all the instructions listed, got it done. My computer (at the time a surface pro 3 with windows 10) would not work for me. I finally borrowed an older laptop with windows 7, I think. That worked like a charm. No problems with it.
Other problems I personally had was understanding what the instructions actually meant for me to do, as I am not computer literate. I remember I had a hard time figuring out how to put the downloaded files into a folder in the correct location so the computer could find it. It really wasn't hard, I just didn't know exactly what they wanted or meant to do it.
Another problem was understanding how to use the "command" prompt. I had to click on something other than the command prompt (it was either a newer or older name for it - can't remember which). But, once I got it figured out, everything went smoothly and flawlessly. Somebody (ChazzMatt(?)) had linked to a different suggestion - can't remember what it was - but that worked.
What I would do now and what I did was, go in and print out the instructions. Once they are printed out, go thru it line by line, word for word and cross out everything that does Not apply to your phone, situation, etc. Read the remaining instructions over slowly and make sure what you are reading (and thinking) is exactly what the instructions say.
Messing with your phone can be very nerve wracking. It was/is for me, every time I do it. That's why I would print out the instructions and follow them exactly.
Sorry that's all I can add. I have to have exact explicit instructions and follow them (dummy mode).
As far as the button dance, I have never had a problem getting into twrp using it when changing roms. Magisk seemed to never install the first time and I could only get into twrp by using the button dance.
The reply to that reddit thread says that another user has it working in Pie. I wonder if you just have some weird corruption on your phone. I think you said you did a factory reset, correct? What I might suggest next is to try the Verizon repair process (they have some software that can supposedly reload the OS or something, as I recall). Maybe that will get you to a running state again.
And, again, try the button dance again a few times... I know it's annoying but it may work. If that gets you into download mode, you can then drop a KDZ for Oreo (or just jump into the Frankenstein method)... and you should be good? It's certainly weird that you can't get in there...
EDIT: Looks like not being able to access this setting does seem to affect a few phones on Pie... a quick google search confirmed this: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=android+cannot+change+usb+mode
Another thing to try - open up device manager, then plug in the phone and see if the list refreshes. This will tell you that Windows is "seeing" the phone, and maybe you can find out what driver it's trying to use. Maybe that's the problem? If it doesn't refresh at all, I would still suspect the cable...
Another post saying the same general thing: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/pixel-2-xl-usb-preferences-greyed-t3838058
EDIT2: You might also see if there's an app that can help you... like this one, for example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.vincze.usbsettings&hl=en_US

All I need is download mode and I'm ready to get this thing going, haha.
One of my computers detects the phone (it thinks the USB port can't supply enough power when I plug the phone in) but not as the device it is. The Windows 7 machine - nothing.
-edit- I tried that app just now and all it does is detect Android version and then if it's 6.0 or above, sends me over to Developer options. Seems like it just skips the part of going to it via the Settings menu... (indicates this phone is not supported by the app, based on the app's notices.
-edit2- Can someone link me to a video or screenshot walkthrough for the button dance? I may just be doing it wrong based on reading it, and the only videos I can find are for old Moto phones. Is that the same 4 corner thing?
edit3- I'm looking for anything Verizon may have to rebuild the OS...if anyone has some insight as to exactly where I can find this, that would be great.
When I attempt to enter "download mode" (same method as mentioned in a previous post) as suggested by one of the Verizon program that can repair it, the phone just charges and never enters any special mode.
