************************THIS SCRIPT WILL NO LONGER EXIST BY ANY MEANS AS IT DID NOT WORK. IT WORKED IN THE BEGINNING, BUT WHEN THE COMMAND ( chmod 777 gfree ) CAME ALONG ADB WOULD NOT ALLOW IT. I'M REMOVING THE FILE FROM MEDIAFIRE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. BUT, IT CAN'T BRICK BECAUSE IT DOSEN'T EVEN BEGIN TO ROOT. : (
This script was made using windows command prompt.. So don't even attempt with Mac OS, unless you use Parallels or whatever.
EVEN THOUGH I MADE THIS SCRIPT TO MAKE PERM ROOTING WITH GFREE ALOT EASIER, EVEN MYSELF DOES NOT REALLY TRUST THIS SCRIPT ANYMORE.. I AM HIGHLY RECOMMENDING YOU USE THE VIDEO THAT GUIDED ME WITH THE MAKING OF THIS SCRIPT. EVEN THOUGH I DON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN YOUR GLACIER BEING BRICKED, I STILL DON'T WANT IT TO HAPPEN REGARDLESS. NEITHER DO YOU. PLEASE, DO YOURSELF AND I A FAVOR AND USE THE VIDEO. THANKS -- I just looked through it and suspect it to work, i coded it and typed it correctly so I have gained a little more trust into it.. please, post your outcome on this thread. Thanks, iN98-
I just made this as of July 30, 2012 21:09:56. With no help except a guide from this video
Even newer link.. : ) HIGH SPEED 1.1MB/s DOWNLOAD LINK
I haven't got to test it so if a problem shall fall, POST THEM ALL!
Oh and also, if you want me to make a script for you (especially with ADB involved) PM me, and i'll get you hooked up faster than Lizard Lick
I just noticed on the link that a exploit "virus" was found for android.. this is from GFree/SDK.. Not the script, the script is just a .bat file that runs from the Android SDK "Platform-Tools" folder. Don't be alarmed.**********
ALSO, THIS WAS A BLIND BUILD.. IF YOU BRICK IT'S NOT MY FAULT. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IN ERROR.
Just a thought you might wanna put script in the title and put some more explanation in the OP just to make it clear what it is. I like the idea though. I hope it works for everyone. It would make everyone's lives easier. Good luck!

Although i don't really understand the 2nd part of that statement, there is a difference between doing something manually and using a script. Most of us here have used the gfree method so i maintain what i was saying and you REALLY should test this yourself. But hey, its not my phone that might become a brick.

You really can't brick this phone as you can't do anything to the bootloader. Nothing short of pulling the battery while flashing the radio from the engineering image or something is going to brick it.
There have been no reports of anyone killing their phone yet.
Edit: will there be another method? You will have to go to a psychic forum to get the answer to that one.
actually there is a process but i really dont wanan tell anyone how to brick their mytouch slide.. just sees evil, ya know/

what a wonderful ally! Try googling for a video on rooting this phone. You'll find it there...or check out the ROM BIBLE for links...
Well, even though you should have looked first, here is the link to kingofyo's well done video of Eugene's method. After you have root, you HAVE TO flash the ENG ROM to DOWNGRADE your rom and radio. The link's in the ROM BIBLE, also. But make sure that once you're done with ENG and you flashed your chosen rom, make SURE flash the newest slide radio, also found in the "Bible". Good luck, Chuck...

And just when I was beginning to lose hope, everything worked.
I was using my program with the "stop after one 'offline'" setting. I'll upload a copy so that others can use it. It's a C#.NET program so you'll need windows and the .NET framework. It should be placed in the SDK tools folder. When your phone is on or starting, click "Run" and it'll take you through a full cycle telling you if it's successful or not (except if you tell it to stop after one "offline", then you should run adb devices to check if it worked or not). If it doesn't work, restart the phone and click Run again once it's far enough through the startup. It's by no means magic and if your phone is like mine, expect to do it many many times for it to work. However it does make it simpler since you only need to press 3 buttons every time you cycle.
"Adaptive timing" makes the program start the loop a second and a half before it detected offline mode last time. I'm not sure if that's any good, but others said that it works better when you loop for as little as possible.

Just unzip the file to your root SDK folder with adb.exe then make sure you have installed .NET framework then run the Autorun.exe. Good luck.

Yup. I had a new one and the easiest way to go about doing it is by keeping the battery cover off, keep loop running and keep going into recovery then battery-pulling if it doesn't work.
It's not exactly elegant, but it lets you get a ton of tries done in a fraction of the time - I was basically fully rooted within 10 minutes of starting after I started using this method.

You use a RUU and flash it like a radio through your update. It will set your phone back to just like you got it from verizon. No CWM, ROM, Kernel, any evidence of tampering. It's the best thing to do if you break your phone. Although I sent my old one in that I bricked without doing it and they sent me a new one and never said anything.

You download the file and make sure it is named exactly PB31IMG.zip
then:
1. Put the PB31IMG.zip onto the root of your SD card
2. Turn your phone off (not reboot)
3. Hold volume down and the power button until your phone boots up into HBoot
It will ask you if you want to update, press volume up to update.
Then once it finishes it will ask you if you want to reboot, press volume down.
Here is the newest radio:

I am not sure what "flashing WM" is. I am no expert at Android. I've had mine for 3 months but it's very addicting and i strive to learn more always and people were willing to help me and gave me the feeling that none of my questions were stupid. I hope I can make others feel the same.
You put the RUU on your SD card on the phone. The link I posted will go through it step by step but basically you just load the RUU (PB31IMG.zip) to the main directory of your SD card, power off, volume down + power button and press volume up when it asks you to update and most importantly DO NOT interrupt it. Make sure your battery isn't going to die, your battery won't accidently dislodge and if it seems like its frozen just let it sit there and seem like it is. It is very important not to interrupt radio's and RUU's

Their are 2 options one like posted above that is flashed through hboot from the sd card or the RUU which is a Windows PC based .exe. You can find both with instructions here http://dougpiston.com/?p=7

But Finally, The Method That Worked For Me Was The *NEW* Method From "Unrevoked-Forever"
I Think I Was The 3.22 Method, But Can't Remember For Sure!!
Anyway, All You Have To Do Is Download: The Boot Drivers, The Unrevoked-Forever Zip., & The 3.22 Zip (Or Whatever The Newest Version Is Now)??
Then Install The "HBootDrivers" To Your Computer!! Follow The Video On The *unrevoked.com* Website!!
Then Open The File 3.22 File, & Click The Top Left File Button, Make Sure USB Debugging Is Enabled Settings/Applications/Development, Connect Your Phone & Let It Run!!
*Note* It Will Look Like It's Not Doing Anything, But It Is, Let It Run!
It Takes About Fourty Minutes To Complete & Will TELL YOU WHEN IT'S FINISHED!!
GOOD-LUCK!!

Hi, I'm sorta a noob with rooting so bare with me. First, what version of visionary should I use to root my device? Will it work after the ota update? As far as i know visionary is not gonna brick your phone ,in regard to changing your rom you also need to s/off your phone, and to do that you need to setup ADB on your computer i suggest you read this posts first ,you will find all the answers you are after

After you root and s-off your phone you need to setup rom manager so you will get clockworkmod recovery and you can boot in to that and flash a new rom or kernel through there.
and i am not sure about the question you had about the update.
yes you will get su after rooting.

Ok, first there are already many threads on this subject, so next time you should try a search first,
for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850141
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882546
Next the following links will help walk you thru rooting your phone using visionary r14. I have not had any problems with it, many people have rooted this way. If something goes wrong it is usually operator error. This method is for after the OTA. All needed files and links are in the video instructions.
Visionary has bricked phones before when not properly used, the videos show how to use it properly, use all the same settings in the videos.
This is the visionary method, but works perfectly when done correctly..
No adb needed.
Follow the videos to a "T", remove visionary and superusers from you phone if you already have them installed from a previous temp root before following the videos, start fresh, follow the videos starting with temp root then onto perm root then onto flashing a rom. Do everything just like the videos start to finish and you should have no problems.
Temp root first:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/20/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision-visionary-method/
Then perm root
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how-to-gain-permanent-root-and-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/
Then flash a rom
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/
Remember don't assume you know how to temp root properly, follow all three videos start to finish and you should have no problems
Also the video "Load a custom rom" will give you a link to flash your first rom. There are a couple of choices to choose from.
Good Luck.
Editlease see post #32 in this thread for a testimony from someone who just followed the videos and rooted his phone.

Everyones still waiting on gingerbread, but it looks like Cyanogen is in the lead for releasing it.
Any time you flash a new rom you need to wipe data/cache in recovery. Updates to the same rom a wipe is not needed.
As far as what you want in a rom, my suggestion is to start flashing diffrent roms and give them a try. I thought I didnt like sense but I am currently running a sense rom (Virtuous). So you dont know till you try.

1)Show me one brick from someone following the videos I posted and Ill take the links down. Yes a lot of people have bricked using visionary, but thats because they assumed they knew what they were doing when in fact they did not. Visionary causes bricks when not properly used, the videos shows how to use it properly. You must follow all the steps from start to finish including the temp root settings they use in the videos.
2)and yes there is a beta version of gingerbread out CM7 but Cyanogen did not officially release this version, and there are so many bugs in it I hardly think a noob needs to flash CM 7.0.0.

I recommend you read this thread and make informed desicions, if you know how to use ADB, then this is another method. But if you dont the method I posted above is your other option, it doesn't require the use of ADB.
As far as ADB goes this is something I highly recommend learning, but we all know some people just dont get it. It took me a lot of reading and watching videos to understand ADB. Now that I know how to use ADB its pretty simple, but I remember when I first started with rooting ADB was like reading greek. But I really cant stress enough the importance of learning ADB.
Hahah sorry, i was using swype. And yeah, so what do you recomend, cause i really dont wanna brick my phone for its fairly new.
Oh, and another thing, if i root with visionary or rage, that only gives me root access. But if i flash a rom then i will also have cyanogen? And i was reading, since i wanna oc, whats this kernel stuff? Please forgive my noobish ways

I used the videos to root my G2, there have been a lot of bricks using Visionary but I have yet to see anyone say they followed the videos to the "T" and it bricked there phone. As for the Rage method, there have been almost no reports of bricks from this method, but I have seen a few bootloops (stuck on the HTC screen). It requires using ADB, so if your ok with ADB use the Rage method, if not, you'll have to weigh the risks based on your own ability. My suggestion, watch the videos, all of them and if its something within your skill range go for it.

Ok, get rooted first then you can worry about kernels, I believe Cyanogen 6.1.1 already comes with an overclocked kernel up to 1.42GHz. So all you have to do is flash CM 6.1.1 his latest release, then down load a cpu controlling app from the market like setcpu(which I use) or cputuner(free) and set the parameters you want your cpu to run at.
Thanks, but a boot loop is fixable right?

It usualy is you can boot in to recovery and wipe and flash another kernal or rom. Just have a look at the links that I posted ,you will get all the answers.

Not always hopefully if this happens you have gotten far enough along to put a recovery on your phone, or sometime you can stock recovery factory reset but if those options arn't there guess what you would have to have AndriodSDk installed on your computer with ADB, but you would have to do everything in fastboot mode which is giving commands from your computer to you phone. So it wouldn't be adb because you have to be booted into Andriod to use it, it would be fastboot and run commands similar to ADB, so for this purpose you would have to know how to use ADB. And even then no guarantees. So if you are looking for a guarantee you wont brick your phone there are none, and I wont give you one, these methods have been proven to work if you follow them exactly, mess up and you have a brick.
I know most people dont have $500+ laying around and I know I dont but for me the rewards far outweighed the risk. I just got a pm from another member that followed the videos and guess what he is rooted, he did it today. I asked him to post in this thread with his success story, so hopefully he will.
Here is a quote from him from my PM "it worked! i got so frustrated with adb, i gave it a shot and success!"
Edit: He just posted success his user name is robot_agenda and his post is #32 in this thread.
wait so what did he give a shot? the gfree method?

He rooted his phone with visionary following the videos I posted.
and also, have you heard of the issue with visionary where the phone boots into recovery when being charged?

That has nothing to do with visionary, thats has to do with ClockworkMod recovery, if your phone is powered off and you plug it in to charge it boots into recovery, if you want root you have to deal with this issue untill they fix the bug in clockworkmod recovery. Also the phone shuts off fine unless its pluged in. Everyone with a htc vision phone who is rooted has this issue. as for me I charge my phone while it on so it doesn't bother me.

Here's a basic stock rom in case you need it sometime
the only modifications made are the su and flash_image binaries are included and ro.secure has been turned to 0 so you can adb remount.
How to flash download the rom from here
Place rom on sdcard
wipe data and all else
then flash rom
reboot and do what you need to do
Cool, you never know when you might need this.
Thank you! Appreciated.

How is this comparable to the rom listed here?
bit ly backslash fBEJnU
I want to have a known working recovery before I make any more changes to my phone. I am not exactly a newbie to this stuff (I have a Pandigital Novel that has been rooted and hacked into a nice tablet) but this is taking things to a whole new level for me and I need my phone. So I'm a bit nervous.
Of course I really wish I'd asked around some before I got to work on removing some of the stuff on it already (mostly known junkware from Virgin Mobile and stupid stuff like weblinks pretending to be native apps) after rooting it with superoneclick and installing root explorer. I need to know if your rom or the one I linked to will be able to allow me to roll back to a default installation that I can revert to if there are any issues down the road. Can you help me?
I apologize if this isn't the right place for this question. Thank you for the many mods I have seen you do already. I look forward to trying them once I have a fallback plan.

I'm not actually sure what your talking about but I've posted this on three different sites so far. I do that for the guys that don't go to other forums. There probably isn't any difference in the roms.

I'm talking about the one by takehull posted on sdx-developers here.
Yours is not exactly stock since you added su and flash_image binaries--or does that really not matter?
Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure exactly how his is different since I didn't build it. I'm gonna guess and say his probably doesn't have the binaries in it, I'm not sure exactly how his is different since I didn't build it. I'm gonna guess and say that his doesn't have the binaries in it. I don't know. Honestly the only way to know for sure that it's stock rom is to get someone that hasn't rooted yet flash the recovery and get a backup of system. I've been waiting for someone like that to come along but ... It hasn't happened yet.
I won't tell you which forums to watch but I'm partial to xda cuz I been on here since my first android phone and it doesn't have those flash ads that pop up cover your entire screen until you click the x.

The only modifications this has are the two binaries that you put into /system/bin when you root. You can remove them by using Superoneclick Root and selecting "unroot."

My only excuse is that it was late when I found the thread and I wasn't reading clearly. Going by that statement his rom and your rom basically seem to be the same things.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't rooting actually a requirement of obtaining the backup? Or did I misread the instructions somewhere? It'd be nice if someone at Virgin Mobile were to leak the complete rom somewhere so people had a fall back option besides trying to return the phone as bricked. (If that's even possible?)

Sounds like a good reason to pick a forum. Not sure if I'm a member of any places that do that since I run with adblock and noscript enabled most of the time.
Any chance you could link me to written instructions on how to flash the rom you have here? I know you have video tutorials but those are harder to follow for me because I am hard of hearing. Music I can do because it is "beautiful noise" and I can usually find some lyrics to get the words of. Your video HOWTOs are not good for me because I have to strain to hear what is being said.
Thanks again for your time and patience in replying to me.

Thanks. Dude above me, there is a rom flashing tutorial at prepaidandroids.net. We will help you out there. Its a site that specializes in on the Optimus v itself.
(Optimus V - Contracts Suck)
Thanks for posting this. It just came in handy when I was changing my virgin phone number. Part of the process is dialing ##841446# to bring up the activation menu, but the ## prefix on CM7 does not work, apparently only a stock ROM can do that.
Any way to put it on a phone friendly site? No matter what browser I use on my phone it will not download from google docs.

THANKS, this worked perfectly.
It's pretty much as described, a stock Opt V rom, with Super User already set up and installed.
Titanium worked on it no problem as well.
thanks a ton man! i needed to flash back to stock to get my 3G working again. if you flash a custom rom while youre between payments, you know, during down time, you may need to flash back to stock and run the activation app next time you put service on your phone.
worked like a charm. i thought my 3G was broken. im doing a happy dance now!
Anyway I can get a link to the stock rom with all the bloatware removed but not rooted?

It is that easy. It's just that getting R/W access to /system may or may not be trivial. I haven't tried yet, I'm still getting used to this ginormous screen in my pocket....It is a little disorienting, and I'm coming from an E3D lol.
I'm from HTC so I don't have any familiarity with how this works...
does the "update.zip" (based on model number or other identifier) method work for anything? Since the bootloader isn't "locked" (crypto-signed) does that mean that update.zip's (or their equivalent) signature's aren't crypto-signed...or signed at all?
If the security is that lax, well, it is a matter of minutes until any one of us walks right into root....by accident
Rooting & Security
If this is not the right thread to ask this in, I apologize as I am not trying to hijack this thread. That being said, I am new to Android having only had my Samsung View 4g since its release and my new Epic Touch since last night. I have read several news articles that have indicated that a rooted device somehow is less secure then a stock device and I am wondering if this is true and if there is a way to have Root access and still remain secure or if this is just another thing the non-tech media are over hyping?

They are over-hyping it, you have nothing to fear unless you actually are looking for an app to mess up your phone. Root access has an app called superuser which lets you control which apps can use root access to the system or not. Don't worry, its safe!
update.zips
update zips are signed updates from like samsung, we either can apply zips in CWM, which has been pushed to epic either via ADB originally or via ODIN and flashing a TAR to a partition Odin makes the world go around and around for noncrippled samsungs (im pointing at the replenish my mom has)
Can this be ported to Galaxy S2 - i9100
If samsung keeps this up, I may have to put my HTC away for a couple months. Does samsung have skins like htc phones?
