[rom] basic stock rom

Here's a basic stock rom in case you need it sometime
the only modifications made are the su and flash_image binaries are included and ro.secure has been turned to 0 so you can adb remount.
How to flash download the rom from here
Place rom on sdcard
wipe data and all else
then flash rom
reboot and do what you need to do

I want to have a known working recovery before I make any more changes to my phone. I am not exactly a newbie to this stuff (I have a Pandigital Novel that has been rooted and hacked into a nice tablet) but this is taking things to a whole new level for me and I need my phone. So I'm a bit nervous.
Of course I really wish I'd asked around some before I got to work on removing some of the stuff on it already (mostly known junkware from Virgin Mobile and stupid stuff like weblinks pretending to be native apps) after rooting it with superoneclick and installing root explorer. I need to know if your rom or the one I linked to will be able to allow me to roll back to a default installation that I can revert to if there are any issues down the road. Can you help me?
I apologize if this isn't the right place for this question. Thank you for the many mods I have seen you do already. I look forward to trying them once I have a fallback plan.

I'm not actually sure what your talking about but I've posted this on three different sites so far. I do that for the guys that don't go to other forums. There probably isn't any difference in the roms.

Yours is not exactly stock since you added su and flash_image binaries--or does that really not matter?

I'm not sure exactly how his is different since I didn't build it. Honestly the only way to know for sure that it's stock rom is to get someone that hasn't rooted yet flash the recovery and get a backup of system. I've been waiting for someone like that to come along but ... It hasn't happened yet.
I won't tell you which forums to watch but I'm partial to xda cuz I been on here since my first android phone and it doesn't have those flash ads that pop up cover your entire screen until you click the x.

My only excuse is that it was late when I found the thread and I wasn't reading clearly. Going by that statement his rom and your rom basically seem to be the same things.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't rooting actually a requirement of obtaining the backup? Or did I misread the instructions somewhere? It'd be nice if someone at Virgin Mobile were to leak the complete rom somewhere so people had a fall back option besides trying to return the phone as bricked. (If that's even possible?)

Sounds like a good reason to pick a forum. Not sure if I'm a member of any places that do that since I run with adblock and noscript enabled most of the time.
Any chance you could link me to written instructions on how to flash the rom you have here? I know you have video tutorials but those are harder to follow for me because I am hard of hearing. Music I can do because it is "beautiful noise" and I can usually find some lyrics to get the words of. Your video HOWTOs are not good for me because I have to strain to hear what is being said.

Thanks for posting this. It just came in handy when I was changing my virgin phone number. Part of the process is dialing ##841446# to bring up the activation menu, but the ## prefix on CM7 does not work, apparently only a stock ROM can do that.

Any way to put it on a phone friendly site? No matter what browser I use on my phone it will not download from google docs.

It's pretty much as described, a stock Opt V rom, with Super User already set up and installed.
Titanium worked on it no problem as well.

thanks a ton man! i needed to flash back to stock to get my 3G working again. if you flash a custom rom while youre between payments, you know, during down time, you may need to flash back to stock and run the activation app next time you put service on your phone.
worked like a charm. i thought my 3G was broken. im doing a happy dance now!

After I downloaded and installed, I ran the first option of remove CIQ. It said successful and then said please reboot.
When I rebooted, all I get now is the boot screen that says Samsung Galaxy SII and then it just sits there.
Did I brick my phone?
Background info: My phone is rooted but not with a custom rom or kernal or odin. It is completely stock and I rooted using sfhub's method.

You didn't brink it. I would suggest that you go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
download the stock rom and get the pit file for it as well and read up on odin real quick and reflash your phone with this rom to go back to stock. Also the post you linked is for HTC phones not Samsung from what I can see with a quick glance of it. If you want to reroot and remove CIQ I would suggest getting one of the roms from this section that already has CIQ removed from it and not using that app again.

I don't know if you are bricked. But why would you flash something for the HTC phones when you have a Samsung its really not to hard to find what you need you just had to look in our dev section and you would have found your answer there to remove ciq

Sfhub's rooting method is super easy, so easy that people that shouldn't be rooting can now root!
My suggestion is run the .tar file like mentioned above. Once you are back to stock, you might want to read a lot before flashing anything again...

I didn't flash anything previously. I just installed an app and bought the key in the market.
While that forums heading is regarding HTC phones, on page 11 is where the app actually is listed and the description states that it is for all phones including Samsung.
I am able to do volume up and power and get to the Samsung options of factory reset but when I choose this, it pops up asking for password. What would that be or is it just my own lockscreen password?
Edit: Yes my lockscreen password is the password. Did the factory reset and it is still coming up to only the Samsung screen.

Agreed, a good amount these people really shouldn't be flashing anything cause they don't even understand at all what it is they are actually doing. They just hear about it and assume its got to be easy cause they own a pc and can operate windows explorer. I can't tell you how many times people start a thread about if they bricked there phone when 99% of then haven't bricked it at all. which is completely obvious to any one who knows there way around android and get what it its there actually doing to there phone. I feel really bad for the OP and all the others who attempt to flash things without a clue as to whats going on. OP ( which means original poster, aka the guys who started the thread ) you need to search for a stock recovery .tar and run it using odin and you will be fine. Just like the guy above started. Can't figure out odin or aint sure what it is? Use your new best friend www.google.com to find the answer including the one thats already answered in post several times with the same topic name that this one is. nothing is wrong with your phone that can't easily be un done. Ok guys, is the purpose here at XDA to help others or just talk down to them and belittle them for not being android guru's?
While I completely and graciously appreciate your advice and help, I am 42 not 15. Also, while I am far from having the extensive knowledge that most of you have, I am not a n00b to all of it and have a pretty good understanding or roms, flashing, etc.
Back to the topic. Again, I did not flash anything. I installed an app. While I agree that I could have found everything needed here in the e4gt forum to remove ICQ (which I did previously but didn't flash), I decided to try the app created by TrevE because it also states that it is for Samsung too, even though it is in the HTC forum and the post topic states HTC.
I installed the app because it also has many additional privacy options, not just CIQ. I did my homework (at least I thought I did) and read everything there and here before doing so. I did not just see something shiny and install it without at least knowing the parameters. Also, since I wasn't flashing anything, I thought installing an app would be safer. If it worked great, if it didn't just uninstall it. Again, since TrevE states that it is also for Samsung, I thought I would be safe.
I guess I will have to do what most of you mentioned and just have to use
[ODIN][STOCK][TAR] SPH-D710.EG30_CL435803_REV05_user.tar.md5
I was just asking for advice if there was another method or something I was overlooking before taking that route.

Why are you so against using the TAR file? It will get you back up and running and then you can root with the same process that you used the first time.
My apologies for my prior post, we have all been there and done that. I lack sleep right now...

I did the exact same thing the other day and had the exact same results. I ended up flashing a stock kernel with cwm, then flashed a ROM and was able to get it to boot. I didn't wipe when I flashed so I was able to recover all my data. My next step is to use the stock tar, then I'm gonna run the auto root and restore all my data with titanium.

Just lazy, LOL.
It seems like a lot of work and was I just praying and hoping for a quick fix or something that I may have been overlooking to fix it.........plus I didn't want to loose all my data and go through the headache of spending three hours setting up and reinstalling everything.
Will this increase my Odin count?

Everyone should have a copy of the full stock tar. If your phone has any kind of power, its almost always able to be saved

The only method to remove CIQ from Samsung devices is my noCIQ series of mods (which are included in many custom ROMs).

Even though TrevE said it works for Samsung, it did'nt. I shoulda just did the noCIQ from Konane that I originally downloaded. I was just hoping some of the other privacy issues addressed in TrevE's apk would be in noCIQ.

I did the exact same thing too! And the one time I didn't run a backup was the one time I needed it. If you aren't rooted, root. If you don't have a custom ROM, now's the time. No CIQ in Calkulin's!

@OP glad you fixed your phone because a bricked phone is no fun. Although I know you may of gotten upset at this statement. I have to agree that too many people root their phones with out even understanding how to repair it if something goes wrong. Not for nothing but my phone cant boot up its wiping caches then trying to flash a new rom. If that dont work then its time to pray...

I tried this app on my Epic (original ver) and it did the exact same thing. I just restored from nand and all was good.
I was surprised that the app did report that CIQ was running, even using severals ROMs where it was said to be removed

Android 2.3.5
Baseband Version - T989UVKID
Kernel version - 2.6.35.11
Build Number - Gingerbread.UVKID
Hello fellow sgs2 users and xda members.
After searching google and the XDA forums it would appear that rooting my phone is going to void the warranty, unless I can find a stock rom...
A few questions:
1. Is the above statement true or can I root my phone and install custom rom's without voiding the warranty?
2. Many of the sites / posts I found were not specific about the type of warranty - whether it be manufacturer or t-mobile. Can anyone shed some light on this?
3. Is there a place I can find a stock rom backup? I found an OP post in the dev forums, but the link is broken. EDIT: I found all the files for the stock restoration process here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321811&highlight=stock+rom+void+warranty
At this point the answer to these questions are the only thing I'm waiting for before I root my phone.
My primary motivations for rooting and installing a custom rom (by priority/importance):
1. Getting rid of CIQ
2. Removing carrier programs and customizations
3. Improving performance
Perhaps one of you overachievers can recommend a set of steps to follow. I've read through several rooting guides, and the "what's the best rom" thread. I'm starting to feel a bit overwhelmed, but will continue reading.

I'm having trouble getting the superuser.zip (su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip) installed. After installing it using CWM, I boot up the phone but superuser is nowhere to be found in my apps list, and ROM Manager doesn't work because it says it can't find superuser.... sigh...
A couple of things that the instructions from many rooting guides that I found were necessary and/or helpful:
When you need to power up into CWM: make sure you unplug the USB before you do it. All you have to do is hold down the volume keys and the power button at the same time until you feel the phone vibrate, or you see the samsung logo appear.

Okay here is the main answer you need: Yes, rooting your phone voids your warranty. Period. Some of us (myself included) go into all of this rooting stuff knowing that doing so means we're on our own. Some do it thinking they can game the system if/when **** goes down, and some don't know the risks at all.
Even though I have never nor would never think that someone owes me a new phone when I screwed it up (save for on my epic 4G because you needed to root to get usable GPS and that is pathetic) there is one way to guarantee that you'll be safe: buy the phone from bestbuy and get their insurance. It covers "accidental" damage meaning if it got bricked you could simply "accidentally" drop it down a few flights of stairs and when it is subsequently destroyed you get a new device. That and that alone is the only sure fire way to keep your device safe.

Thanks guys, I need help.
I go to cwm and install from zip (from my external SD) and select su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip
From there I get the following error:
E:Error in/sdcard/su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip
(status 0)
Installation aborted
I was told this is not a problem, so I reboot my phone from the cwm menu. No superuser in my apps list, ROM Manager does not work.

Sorry that was an old post I was in the middle of editing it when you replied! I did use Odin.
I was able to get into CWM no problems after I removed the usb cable.
My problem now is that it wont take the superuser install from CWM. No idea what could have gone wrong...

Would you consider removal of CIQ a solid reason?

How about try to root using superoneclick method.
Look in the sticky "[ INDEX ] .☆.☆.☆. SEARCH HERE 1st .☆.☆.☆. most wanted topics, FAQ" of this forum, there is a link for Root via superoneclick v2.2 in that thread.

just keep flashing it til you dont get an error. sometimes it takes 3 or 4 times.

i think the theme is only updated through 3.69 but i think it will work on 3.7 also

Waiting 10 minutes after reboot, 7 minutes to go... then another reboot.. and then I guess I'm done! Although I have a feeling I will need to verify that my network settings and connections all work... Very excited =-]

youll be fine, juggernaut works very well.

Its really very early and i'm not sure that its worth the risk at this point. Everything is pretty early in development and if you are inexperienced the odds of getting your phone messed up or even bricked are very high. You MIGHT be able to cover up the evidence that you rooted but if you can do that much than your phone probably isn't bricked anyways. It's also fraud.
Like another poster said, get insurance if you just have to do this, but personally I really recommend waiting until the pros have it worked out and there's something really worth rooting for. I HATE CIQ just as much as the next guy but i'm waiting for a good ICS build before I root. I've lost too many phones to accidental physical damage to lose another to this.

I rooted to get the latest firmware [in canada it goes through samsung womp-womp ] and to get some extra customization out of my phone. It can give a phone the extra features you might feel are missing.

I always root my androids except my nexus's I rarely root them and as of now haven't my gnex

This! If he sees the pros + cons then decides he doesn't want it, then he shouldn't. You're a bad friend if you force him to do something he's not comfortable with to his phone.

Regardless of whether he ultimately wants to root or not - make sure that even if it's remotely on the radar that he unlocks the BOOTLOADER as soon as he gets the phone.
Unlocking the bootloader wipes the ENTIRE phone (SD card partition and all) so it's something to do before anything else.
With the ability to subsequently make backups, rooting can easily come later.

It's rather simple:

If he doesn't want/know then he SHOULDN'T cause he could end up with a bricked phone.

There's absolutely no reason to try to convince your friend, you're doing a disservice.
Murphy's law says he'll end up bricking it.
Unless you enjoy modding and willing to take the risk, let them use it stock - it's far more stable anyway.

And since you seem confused and mixing terms.... You can still be on stock while rooted.
You can even run a custom firmware without being rooted/having root.
Rooted merely means having local admin rights on the OS you are currently running. Custom firmware or not us entirely unrelated.
On most Samsung phones you don't even need to root to load custom ROMs, because they have open bootloaders. They're is no real relation between these terms which you are mixing.

You can root the factory image so he'll still be stock with root. It'd best to root in case he wants future access for whatever, for example titanium backup would let him backup all his data, needs root. There are a milkion reasons to need root for very basic things.

Steal his phone, root it, install aokp/franco/theme and be like I dunno.. It just said update and I clicked yes, sorry bro.

But if the guy doesn't want to use any of those things, there's no need to root it in the first place. If he doesn't see the value in it right now theres no need to force him into it. Rooting because you think he'll want it later in the future makes no sense.

this was my thought too!

At least let him figure out how to do it himself. If he figures it out. It might be for him. Let him do it via fast boot commands. Not one click.
I remember fist time rooting. I only had to press "root" in an app, and I ended up messing my sgs i9000 up completely. I had to learn everything the hard way. The right way. You should never do anything to your phone, unless you know how to get back to where you were.

So basically I want to rom my phone with the AOPK Jellybean rom. But i'm worried if I lose my IMEI number. There anything I can do to make sure I wont lose my IMEI number?

Buy a scratch & win lotto ticket. If you lose, go ahead and flash.

As of right now some simple steps would be being in the OTA update UCLG1 having a SV05 and having TWRP (team win recovery project) instead of CWM. The number of users experiencing this issue is very low. If your in the 30 day return period I advise doing some testing because its less of a hassle going to a store for an exchange instead of sending it away.

So I should use team win recovery project instead of CWR, because it would lower my chances? I don't wanna take any chances I guess i'll be stock until we find a real solution. I don't feel like bricking my $600+ device.

Its a issue affecting a small amount of people there's a very high chance that you might not get it. I was scared to but I said screw it I'm going to find out if my phone has it, if it does ill just exchange it better now than later on when my return period is up.
No one with baseband version of UCLG1 has lost it neither with TWRP and UCLG1.
If you wanna try it download the OTA from your phone(using software update on device itself). Root using no trip method and instead pushing CWM use TWRP. Flash and see what happens.

I actually did root my phone with the toolkit the day I got my phone. I got a OTA update yesterday but I choosed to ignore it because I was afraid to lose my root. I do have CWR already installed but I guess I might as well use TWRP.

No trip root lol and yes twrp I have been through all roms and stock and just fine

+1 Definitely the easiest way.

I was scared too man. I really was. This thing cost me an arm and a leg, its like the nicest thing I own and I never want to put it in dangers way. Plus if I had to pay out of pocket, I wouldn't be able to replace it for 2 months, and it would eat up all my pleasure money.
But you know what, I hate touchwiz. I hate the menus, I hate its goofy sounds and stuff. The stock keyboard is ridiculous.The battery life was really good though. I know I could of changed the launcher and some other stuff but I am really into running my devices lean and mean. This is just a thing, a mentality I guess.
I decided that at best I can provide some information to the community and possibly work with other people and get this figured out. Everyone being scared is going to ruin the test pool because we don't get the scope of info we need to really get analytical about it. At worst, well I have documented everything I've done so far and can reproduce any partition pre-flashing needed. If we all end up with phones with imeis missing in the first 30 days, and all take them back to att because "I don't know I just don't get 4g anymore", we can possibly force att and Samsung to look more in-depth And possibly give a fix.
If anything early is the time to flash if you are looking to get your hands dirty, and be fine with learning some things along the way. I spent a good 2 weeks just learning everything I could about the issue, my phone, just got real intimate with the thing XD. Once I felt comfortable that I have done everything in my power to prepare for the worse, I rooted with the "no trip" method and then installed busy box, and then goomanager from the play store. From there just go to options and then hit open recovery and it automatically detects your device and installs.
Just remember, this is a brand new device running brand new software. All of this is experimental and the fact any of it works, let alone as well as it does is amazing. I'm running aokp rc2 right now and its pretty impressive. There's some weird haptic bugs and I'm noticing that my signal strength is not even close to what it was stock. This is disappointing and o don't understand why this is. As far as I understand I'm still on the same modem? All I've done is flashed aokp and cm10 ROMs. I'm getting about 107db right now and it keeps switching from HSDPA to HSDPA +. So when I load a page, it will be slow till the HSDPA + kicks in, then it will go back down to HSDPA and loose signal strength, almost like it "cranks up" when data is being used? Anyways yea its fun and I totally understand why you want to, but bit expect it to be like 1000x better right now. But if you are down contribute either info, donate to devs, try things, send files/screenshots then come join the fun!

I'm holding out on AOKP until it comes out of preview builds, don't like being a guinea pig.

My experience:
Used the root without tripping flashcounter method.
Used adb to install CWM (the touch version for AT&T, not the teamepic one)
Have flashed custom ROMs, Kernels, and mods.
Absolutely no problems.
Just make sure to download the .zip files that are specific to your device, make nandroids, and have fun!

Using Odin to install ClockWorkMod and then flashed the updated version of ClockWorkMod via Rom Manager & installed CM10... No issues. I've use this method 4 times now on two different S3's with no issues & IMEI still intact.

I'm a Telus user up here in the great white north (canada) and my baseband is LE8 and the kernel date back to may20th.. I made a topic earlier in the international thread about a hiss/static noise problem and a helper told me to flash a new rom as my current baseband is old and he had problems with this baseband/firmware.
I'm so confused, ROMS are just different type of "OS" right? I mean if I want to officially update my firmware I gotta go through the Samsung procedure? (If I update while rooted, I'll lose root right?).

I rooted LE8 with the snap dragon method then flashed cm9.. then flashed cm10 then nandroided back to cm9 then flashed LG1 from androiduser.. and my imei is still intact.. I think losing the imei is totally random in my opinion

Roms can update your firmware it all depends on what stock version their based on.
Most of the time you will find a root injected rom lets say its le9 with this you would just have to flash it through cwm/twrp. Instant firmware update without loosing root.
Then flash any rom based on it.
Plus theres a niffty app called OTA root keeper. Get OTA without loosing root.
Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on something.
