I have had the phone, bought from phones 4U contract free for the past few days and i wanted to give my views for people who may be undecided if it is a sound purchase. Just for the record i still have my iPhone 4 & Desire HD, so i am not biased.....
I was unsure about the form factor when reading the specs, but the lack of hardware buttons means it is literally 95% screen real estate, the display is a thing of beauty. I know others have reported colour issues, but i have not had problems with yellow hue. Or any other display issues. It also feels light but sturdy, i'm sure you will have seen the scratch test video. I'm confident that the screen will stay scratch free unless i drop it (To be fair i will probably drop it)
ICS - It is a great update for android. People have commented about it not being intuitive or user friendly. I spent the first few hours setting things up and finding my way around the OS and while it takes some getting used to it is far better than gingerbread. It is of course biased to Google+ - people who have concerns about not being able to sync their facebook contact pictures should use "syncmypix" it has done a great job populating my phonebook pictures. I have had some force closes, and apps from the market do need an update due to some compatibility issues. As this is a software issue i am not concerned. I would like to add that the face unlock is actually very good. I set the "gimmick unlock" to test it, and it has proved to be more than adequate for day to day use. It does not work in low light, but again hardly a surprise.
GPS is also excellent on the phone seeing a connection established nearly instantly.
I must be missing something with the connecting to other hardware issue. I guess people use their smartphones differently, but from my point of view i connect my phone to my PC to transfer files back and forth and sometimes tether my laptop to use the internet. Both of these things work fine and quickly, so i am clearly missing the issue.
The camera: Ok, the camera isn't going to set the world on fire. In the right lighting it takes a pretty decent snap, but if you are looking for a phone with a heavy emphasis on photos it probably isnt for you. No software updates will change that. I do like the instant shutter speed and it comes with some nice effects.
The battery: Hmmmm the jury is out on the battery. I usually like to cycle the battery over a few days till it settles down, i can then make a valid comment. So far though the battery is giving me approx 12 hours of use, i would consider myself a heavy user (It's a new phone and i'm playing with it lots)
Overall - If you love tech, and are an early adopter it's a great phone. The OS is lightening fast and the display is great. If you want something that 'Just works' i would hold on.
I HAVE NOT HAD THE VOLUME PROBLEMS THAT OTHERS HAVE COMMENTED ON. LITERALLY NOT ONCE.
Please feel free to ask anything about the phone, or if you would like me to try something out just let me know.
Cheers

are you even aware of the conditions that trigger the fault?
If you are not on O2, Vodafone, giffgaff, or Tesco Mobile...then you wouldn't experience the fault. Please give more info about what network you're with.
*sigh of relief* as I'm on Three I hope I won't develop these problems, as there's no 2G to switch to.
OP: good review, mainly mirrors my sentiments.

actually 3 does have 2G connectivity via Orange albeit dwindling down. Either way, both 3UK and Orange do not use 900MHz frequency band for their 2G service.

Yes i am even aware of the conditions that trigger the fault. I have used my O2 sim for a few hours at a time over the weekend and have not seen the fault yet. I am primarily on T-Mobile.
Others may not be aware of the conditions that trigger the fault, so thanks for posting up the link.

Good to know about the battery. I've heard many bad things about the battery life, so it's good to know that yours is lasting as long as one would expect.
Please post what operator you're one so that we can determine if it's all handsets that are being plagued by the volume problems, or just some or most.
I'm with Optus in Australia and I'm fairly certain that they operate on the 900Mhz GSM frequency

Hello
I'm on T mobile for the majority of the time. But do use my O2 sim and have tested it with both. Over the next few days im sure a clearer picture will emerge regarding the problem.
Thanks for the review. My contract is up and I keep going back and forth between wanting this phone and waiting for CM9 or some other ICS based ROM to drop for my dinc.

so then you are not going to encounter the fault. Would've helped if you had made mention of this in your original post.

I am pretty unimpressed with the battery personally. Since coming off charge at 8am this morning (now almost 2pm) I'm on 55%. 49% screen 21% Android OS apparently. Light use.

That is poor. Are you using live wallpapers? Is the screen brightness on auto or manual, and lastly how many charges has it been through?

Screen brightness auto. No live wallpapers. Two full charges. One gmail account on push and one Exchange on push. I browsed Reddit for about 10-15minutes after waking up and that saw the battery down about 6% or so.
Since then I listened to Spotify on the walk to work (15mins). I've replied to some texts, installed/used a network Speed Test app once, showed the camera to a friend and took a panorama. And played with a few settings. Nothing intensive.

Thanks for the review - I really appreciate the time you put into it. I wondered if you think it is worth paying £100 pounds + more for this handset or go for the tried and tested the GS2 which is due to get the ICS upgrade at some point....There seem to be a few p'd off people leaving comments all over this forum regarding this phone.

Actual screen on time was 1h9m for 6h1m49s on battery. The % was where the battery was going (as displayed in the battery part of Settings).
I guess it's okay, but I'm used to a lot higher from my previous iPhone 4 and HTC Radar. But I guess they also didn't have 4.65" 720p displays
I've turned off Exchange push for now, as I don't really care about getting work emails on it anyway. Will see if that improves things, as read some vague topics saying that Exchange is a battery hog.

If one is considering the total screen on time, its actually about 2 hrs 18 min. (Double of 1hr 9 min). The % isn't measured according to time.

Hi XDA users,
I have a Sprint GS3 with 4.0.4 on it, but it pales in comparison to my previous GS2 on 2.3.* ...
(calendar [Mark/Space MIssingSync] swipes from week to week are MUCH slower, 4G data NEVER connects, data seems slower in general, etc., etc.)
All in all, i'm just extremely disappointed with this phone; and although the last time I was digging into my phone's ROM seemed like it was in the Palm Pre days, I believe I'm ready to take the plunge.
The GS2 still screams on 2.3.* and I can only imagine/hope that this GS3 would see great benefit from a down-grade...
Might anyone offer any pro/con advice on this effort? Am I crazy?
I found a thread for MAC (10.6.8) users, and am getting ready to give it a go... (right after I do some massive data back-ups, etc.)
thanks, in advance, for any input.

To answer your question:
It would be quite interesting to see older versions of Android run on this phone.
However, you'll need kernel building experience to make one capable of booting Gingerbread as well AOSP experience. Not sure how easy it would be to backport older software to new phone in the case of Stock TouchWiz.

well hey, that's why i thought i'd ask the smart people - wasn't really needing the smart-ass answers but i guess that's what i get for thinking outside of the [fish in a monitor] box...
regardless, i still think 4.0.4 sucks, comparatively. not sure what you guys are doing that makes it so superior... i just try to make phone calls; keep a calendar current; post pictures and use the internet... seems painfully slow... even typing on it quickly seems to bog it down.
anyway - guess i'll try the ol' factory reset, with a fresh 4.0.4, and see if it snaps out of it, a bit.
happy programming guys.
:/
2.3.x on a GS3 .... I'm sure you could. Would take a bunch of effort and extensive knowledge .... all for the equivalent of retrofitting a 1979 dodge charger's 4 barrel Carb onto a v12 Ferrari. Hmmm.

And if you having speed problems with internet we all are. Idk if it's a gingerbread versus ics issue it could be your phone is only running one core because you flashed something. Try running some benchmark test to see how bad your phone is performing. Hope that reset help you.

If your SG3 isn't running way smoother than your old SG2 on Gingerbread, you've done something bad to your phone. ICS on my SG3 is a quantum leap smoother than Gingerbread every was, and JB will be even better. Perhaps you should look at what tweaks you've done to your phone.

Jim,
I am not going chime on some of the trolls who are above all but I will have to agree that your statement was a bit ludicrous. You have to take into perspective what you just said to a bunch of Galaxy S3 hackers. It's obvious that there is something wrong or we would've saw an iPhone ad bragging about the S3 'downgrade' and that didn't happen.
So, the first thing I would suggest is a factory reset. Assuming you are/were not rooted, let it run for a day and see what happens. Its possible an app could be causing your problems. There are many things you can do to slow things down but its impossible for me,us, xda to guess. Perhaps change up some applications that you are using...?
If this persist, I would suggest taking it back to Sprint and see if they can swap/fix it.
Your next option would be to root and try a different rom. However, if it is a hardware issue, I would want to replace it before I start rooting/making it my own.
As some of the people here mentioned, there might be some very useful information to achieve better 'speed'. I personally use JellyBomb specifically because of the dev and support amongst its users willing to help. You may benefit from others, each their own...
I sympathize as I myself was a webOS fan and can definitely tell you, this is not a walk in the park like webOS Internalz made it but definitely achievable considering almost every process (root, roms, themes, hacks, flashing) has a pretty thorough explanation if not a video.
Hope it works out.

Thank you so much, I read through Flipboard pretty much every day, lol! TMOB had better be in on both of these whenever they are readily available or I'll leave them! Of the two, I am most exited about the battery tech. Battery technology has been lagging while everything else has improved by leaps and bounds. I'm already in awe of the developers and development that happens here as well as researchers from MIT and anywhere else!

I hope tmobiles on board too! The article about the bandwidth tech mentioned that there were already a few companies signed on, so I'm hoping!
I would guess that since both are MIT related (one said it was an offshoot from MIT) that anyone in on one, could easily be at least looking into the other.
Though now that I'm thinking about it, the life doubling tech would more likely be picked up by manufacturers than the carriers. Lets just hope Sammy goes after it! (And pray that apple doesn't decide to steal....I mean patent it themselves!)
(No id rather not get into that discussion! There's a thread for that! Just a quick jab is all! )
As for battery tech, who knows what they're up to. At this point id just like to see more widespread use of the LiPo (Lithium-Polymer) batteries. As far as Im aware they've sorted out most of the problems and they are superior to Li-Ion batteries in every way! Some smartphones already ship with them, but last I looked they were a pretty rare thing for replacements.

Lol, funny! Just read the other day they had to post another apology in Europe because it was a non-apology, then they were slapped with another order to post it again in a larger font, so what they did was use some Javascript that only rendered the main portion of the page no matter what resolution you were using meaning anyone had to scroll down to see the apology. They are looking really bad lately and it's sad.

Never heard of Lithium-Polymer batteries, I'm going to google it as soon as I get my phone reconfigured. I just flashed Wicked V7 today.
One of the things that makes em really cool is they are shapeable...if that's even a word! So rather than being constrained to a certain shape cell you could theoretically have something like the case itself be the battery. They are also supposed to have longer life both in number if cycles and runtime between cycles. Initially they were kind if unstable and could lead to leaks or even fire or explosion. I think I've heard that a lot of the issues have been solved though.
They can be smaller, lighter, stronger, and the fact they can be made to just about any shape means it could open a whole new area if design for all sorts of stuff!
I'm going off memory on all of this so if I got something wrong I apologize, byt I'm oretty sure I'm remembering pretty accurately.

The "its" part of that sentence is referring to the single or multiple chips themselves, not the entire phone. So, this will increase the efficiency of that particular chip and only while in standby mode. I don't see how this would increase the phones battery life by 50% since cell standby is always very low on the list of things that consume my battery. Unless you count when I leave it unplugged and go to bed, for those 6 hours cell standby is top of the list. But, how often do we do that, and do we care about how long we can leave is unused? I think this will help save the broadcast stations some decent power, but as far as our battery life goes, I think its a lot of hype for nothing.
Let's say these chips do increase the efficiency from say 35% to 100%. Also, lets say cell standby uses 10% of your battery. I'm pretty sure mine is often less than that, but I will start recording this # more closely. That translates to an overall power consumption change of 6.5%... worth doing, but not worth phone users getting excited about.
I should also point out that the new chips cannot possibly increase efficiency to 100%, and I did not take into account the power use of the newly added chip because I have no idea how much power it will consume. Both of those things will cause the 6.5% to decrease, but without more detailed information on the chip I cannot even speculate as to how much.

...and the only way to make it more efficient is by reducing the power used in standby. However, signals can be distorted if moving from a low standby mode to high power, so current technologies keep standby levels fairly high. That wastes electricity and is partly what causes smartphone owners to recharge their devices multiple times a day.

It seems to me this sentence refers to existing technology-the current state of affairs, not to this new discovery. We'll just have to wait and see.
This is just a little bit off topic for Android.....But it is just too cool not to share!
This is what happens when I try to research stuff using Google! I get a little sidetracked!
All I can say is, wow! Imagine your smartphone having this as a feature!!!!

Can anyone tell me how smooth playing Ingress is on our Note 2? I've heard it has Tron like graghics, running on top of Google maps. I've downloaded the free app from Google play, but it requires an access code. Weeks ago, ive already submitted my emailing address to request on.
To anyone out there who doesn't know what Ingress is, its a MMO using augmented reality. Where in you need to travel to various aeas and hack, and steel these things called portals. It has a huge back story, and its only open for invites.
Side note: if anyone can invite me, please do. PM me please. I've been biting at the chomps to play this game.

Thanks dandn0ten, I sent you a privet message.
Anyway, I heard playing reeks havoc on battery life. Like it only gives you something like a few hours of game play. I assume us Note2 owners needs some type of power reserve?

Nope, the access code didnt work. Oh well, Ive heard that the Niantic project is the ones handing out access codes.
However, at http://decodeingress.me/2013/03/29/ingress-players-level-6-to-8-will-get-some-invites/ level 6 through 8 players will get some invites.

you meant the game drains battery alot ? it sure does because you will need to turn on gps and location service using wifi/4g network. thats why i have extended battery which doesnt drain as much as normal battery

Works great on galaxy note 2.
But you need power pack when you're out for a long time because the game is very chatty

To give you a data point battery-wise, I played for approximately two and a half hours going from 96% down to about 5% on the regular battery. That's on a relatively stock ROM, with Songza streaming in the background, and not using power saving mode.
Another player I met with a Galaxy Nexus said he lasted about an hour without his external battery pack.
Update: I've since bought an Anker 13000 mAh external battery. I cannot overemphasize how useful they are to play this game. I managed to play for over eight hours today, scoring over 100000 AP and reaching level 6! When I got home, the phone's battery was at 77% and the external was reading as half full!
It's hard for me to quantify exactly how much time I played today but I was at Disneyland today for almost 6 hours and I played anytime not standing in line and went from about 90% battery to about 25%. I am running Jedi 13 with Saberkernal. I'm not sure exactly how many points a gained today (I am a noob with only 3 days play time) but I went from one bar on level 1 complete to 7 bars complete on level one. There are so many portals to hack and Disneyland so it's pretty easy to gain points really quickly.

Yup, Ingress eats batteries (though a few versions ago it seems to have improved).
Go go car adapter and a driver so you can concentrate on drive by hackings, or even fast resonator deployments if the traffic lights are red.
Any improvements on battery life with the latest version? I am still waiting on an access code from them.
Just noticed that I received an extra invite code. First one to PM me with their gmail address gets the code.
Apologies for late update. Invite code is gone.
I got the invite from invite from niantic, I am sure someone will pop and ask for yours. Thanks for offering though.
I just found out about this game because of this post. Looks interesting but I just dident get it. Looked at the videos and still comfused

The first day I got the phone, it was so smooth that I couldn't believe it. Now after one month's usage it feels less smooth. I notice stutter here and there, while scrolling through WhatsApp list, while entering and exiting apps etc. Is this because the performance is degrading or am I just getting used with it and my mind demands more?
In any case, will a custom ROM like PureNexus be any better in terms of this? I'm on ElX kernel.

Nah, it will be the same. Allot of it is just the app not being smooth, not the OS. Over time the cache builds and things just stutter some. The device is still a beast

Hard to say for sure, but for the most part I feel like its just as smooth as day one. In fact, I was thinking recently how impressed I was that I hadn't reboot my phone for 3 weeks and its been rock solid stable and buttery smooth the whole time. I'm on full stock, rooted with TWRP.

I haven't noticed any speed degradation - had XL over a month now.
It's still a piece of ****, but it's still fast.
I cannot believe you people orgasming over this garbage phone.
I'm only keeping it because FI is so cheap for low data usage.

My previous phone was a Note 7. My standards are a bit high... If you are not familiar with Note 7, it's like trading in a Bugatti Veyron for a Mustang (and yes, I own a Stang.)

Not to get too OT but I gotta step in and say something. What are you doing here on XDA? Every time I go into a thread I'm bound to see a post from you just ****ting all over this phone. Your comments are unconstructive and extremely off-putting. Some posters here have had their phone for a month or so, maybe less. If you went out a bought a new Mustang and someone came up to you and said "That car is a piece of ****, I can't beleive you like that thing." you'd feel pretty bad right? Or at least ticked off. I get that you miss your Note 7, I really do. Hang in there and you'll get your Note 8 soon enough.

Back on topic, the phone is still smooth as hell for me. It'll trip on a few things here and there but it's really so minor and occurs so rarely that when I catch it I question if it actually even happened. If that makes sense.. I think when we start to see optimized ROMs and Kernel devs begin merging in cherry-picked updates to Sched and upstream updates, things will get near flawless with this phone. The one thing that concerns me is the lack of F2FS. The storage speed on this phone is pretty lacking, as discussed in my thread discussing why the OP3T with similar hardware is so much faster than this phone. F2FS is much easier on the phone's storage whereas EXT4 will eventually lead to performance degradation over time. Again, I feel that Kernels will rectify this in the future.
Another facet of this might just be that you're used to the speed by now. I'm sometimes still amazed by how much faster this phone is at certain tasks than my Nexus 5X, but when I first got this phone I was in awe nearly all the time when using it. Now it just seems normal to me.
I am coming from using an S7 (which has the same ram and processor as the Note 7) and this Pixel is MUCH faster than my S7 was.
I myself had the Note 7 and this phone puts the Note 7 to shame in a speed comparison. My note 7 lagged like no other. Maybe mine was a defective one but my Pixel XL is blazing fast even after about 2 months of usage. ?

If you don't like the phone, why are you even on XDA? Just use the phone until you can get rid of it and keep your crappy opinion to yourself. These threads aren't meant for discussing how bad it is. The idea is that we all work constructively with the hopes of achieving the best possible user experience for everyone

Yes, I mentioned that in OP for that reason only. I am sure that my mind is getting used with the smoothness and it demands more, much more
Just got to give the devs time. Perfection takes time.
I personally moved away from Samsung a while back. Last sammy device i had was the Note 4.
I still have an S3 mini which in all reality is a "piece of garbage"but all i use it for is a glorified MP3 player while im out doing work and i dont wish to possibly destroy my PixelXL or whatever im using.
But back on track. Samsungs devices least back in the day were very well built! And aside from Touchwiz not to terrible!
But this Pixel XL blows me away. I came to this device from a Nexus 6 which I absolutely loved! The Pixel XL has surprised me since day 1! Im currently running Pure Nexus on it. Its the initial build as the second build wasnt important enough for me to update. Dont mind that i cant shut down. (LOL)
I reboot my device a couple times a week as a pure habit. I feel a fresh start every so often is never a bad thing.
One thing to possibly try if an app becomes sluggish is clear the apps cache while you see it being a bit of a jerk.
If that doesnt help. Clear the system cache in recovery and see if that helps. Your first boot might take a bit longer but you could see a difference.
My suggestion to you is. Try out Pure Nexus. Or any custom rom for that matter! There are several now. We have 2 boot slots to use on this device which is fantastic! If you dont like a certain rom? Try another! Or.... go back to your stock slot! Just read up and educate yourself on how the boot slots work and what happens during flashing. Its not like our old school Safe Strap from back in the day! (Or multiROM for that matter) Well kinda.... but works differently.
Enjoy Pixelers!

I'm venting here because I'm searching for a way to fix my brand new beautiful Mustang - you see, one tire is constantly losing pressure and the trunk just straight up doesn't close.
In other words, I'm extremely frustrated with my brand new $930 device. And the fact that Google just released a 50MB security update and still didn't fix a crippling BT bug introduced in 7.1.1 doesn't help the issue.

If I remember correctly from Mario's front page article on the OP3T, F2FS can be enabled through TWRP. I recall tidy one reason it's not enabled by default on most devices is some remaining bugs/issues to sort out.

Took me a while to find it but Jerry Hildenbrand had some interesting thoughts on bluetooth issues with Nougat and how they're potentially related to bluetooth stack and certain hardware that people are trying to pair their Android N phones to. Look for his posts in this thread:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-pixel-pixel-xl/755478-there-speaker-issue.html
I don't know whether he's on the mark here or not. . All I do know is that I have no issues with connectivity with my car, Fossil Q Marshal or JBL Charge 2+ . . all relatively new devices . . so i do wonder how some are experiencing issues while others like myself are not.
-----
Back on topic - IMO loss in smoothness always boils down to resources as users settle into devices and continue to add software and tweaks to their devices. The more we use the device and add to it, the more apps start to battle for resources either in terms of running services or cached ones. The variation in now we each use our devices leads to variation in experiences as the OS deals with balancing available resources against the services and apps that need to be running vs cached.

Jerry Hildenbrand? That weird beard mofo? How can he possibly fix a bt bug that was introduced in a recent Google update?
First just don't feed the trolls.
I would definitely recommend a custom rom.
The one that said customs are the same than stock just flashed the wrong roms.
Pure is much smoother and snappier than stock.
And there are roms that feels like night and day if it comes to smoothness.
So just try them out and you will see and feel the difference.
