Im looking for a cheapo mount for my EVO for my patrol truck...... Stumbled across this chinese thing on ebay...
has anyone bought one or tried one?

It's been my experience that cheap car mounts just suck, whether it's the vibration and makes the phone bounce up and down, or the thing just falling apart.
I went ahead and bought the HTC official car dock for the EVO and I absolutely love it. Keeps the phone perfectly still and automatically launches the car application when inserted. It's pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for.

If you can spare the CD player slot of your car, you might want to consider the CD slot mount from Mountek:
www.mountek.com
It's very inventive and works fine.
I got one each for my girlfriend (who has an EVO 4G), her sister (EVO 4G), and my sister (iPhone 4), and they all love it.
I am using the Scoth Reusable rubber sheet. A small 1x1inch piece holds the phone on the flat surface, and with a bigger "pad" it will provide greater security. Plus its not ugly or complicated, just a piece of adhesive rubber that wont leave any residue on the phone.

Well i just ordered it... ill give a good review on it once i have it in hand
I've had the Arkon on Amazon since August with no complaints at all. I thought it might damage the vents with the way it attaches to them but it hasn't bent or twisted them at all yet.
Anyone come across a mount that lets you use the rear camera, for instance drag racing at the track and recording the run?

I have one of these and really like it.
http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/01/mountek-mt5000-mounts-htc-evo-in-cars-cd-player-slot.html
got it 20% off too at the time, works great but it does cover my radio display up, but i guess that is a sacrifice..
i was looking a while back for a car mount when i had Sirius and i remember running across some mounts that slide into the seams on your dash. Anyone know anything about these? I can't find them and don't remember what they were called. Hell is need be i could probably make one.
I have the siedio one.
Works great, doesn't vibrate and depending how you mount it, you can use your camera.
I love this car mount works for just about anything not just ur evo , i think its up to 5inches so u can use it even with cases and big batterys

I created my own mount using velcro for vibration and a bit of industrial sound dampening foam rubber modified onto a RAM gps mount for my motorcycle. See the vids at youtube/doitlaynstyle

Awesome! So does it really mount to almost any surface and actually hold well? I may have to buy one of these!

I have a Mountek MT5000, the build feels cheap but it works as advertised. If the ride starts to get rough, expect the phone to jump off the cradle. What I do , is I use the charging cable, loop it on the phone to hold it in place. Ghetto but works.

Just received my Exomount last night. It really works like it shows on the video. I had it mounted on my windshield on the way to work and right now I have it suctioned to my laminate desk at work holding my Evo while I listen to Google Music. I bought mine from one of the sellers on Amazon for about $25 shipped. My coworker saw it this morning and is going to order one as well.
I turned a few corners at moderate speed and went over some pretty big bumps... the thing did not move one bit.
Holy crap I want an Exomount!

I've had that for a few months, it's great. Super secure, rotates and locks, totally customizable. I really recommend it.
Here is the ordering link for the official HTC Incredible 2 or S as its internationally known as car dock. It even has a cut out for the camera so you can record all your boring drives to work.
If you read carefully, it's actually not for the rear camera, it's for the front camera. This dock is also sold on the vzw website. It's for video conferencing. Why anyone should be doing this in the car is beyond me, but there you have it. From the VZW item:
Provides unobstructed camera view for 2-way video conferencing. Vehicle Mount transforms your device into a multifunctional navigation tool! Easily and safely gain access to maps, voice search, your contacts and more with a single touch!

If you like your device mounted in landscape view this is probably the best dock you can get. Outside of that, I wouldn't recommend it. It blocks the volume buttons.
Here is another one Officially from HTC. It looks like the N1 original dock with the metal pole for support. Not sure how the phone fits in but if you look at the reviews they say it works great.
This first mount you listed is available on ebay for 5.99. It also shows the rear of the mount and definitely has a cut out for the rear camera. Also does not seem to block volume buttons

edit...they look similar but I see now they aren't.

My old mount didn't cover the camera either. The problem is the mount shows in the camera view and blocks a good portion of it. Might take some work to minimize this.
I do like the idea of a fitted mount, but my cradle works great without blocking vital functionality (including the front facing camera ). It does block the rear camera though.
I was thinking the same thing, the area behind the mount will block the rear camera. Really not a big deal unless there is some important reason for using the camera while driving? Only other option would be if you mounted the suction cup to your dash and angled the arm down, that might work if you have a dash that the cup sticks to.

I know it's an old thread but I thought I'd give a reason for using your camera while driving. My Dad uses an app called DailyRoads Voyager because he was the victim of a hit and run once and it acts like cop's dashcam essentially. Oddly enough about 2 weeks after he started using it, he was inside a gas station and forgot to turn it off and caught the abduction of a little girl. Thanks to his video they were able to identify and capture the suspect within hours.
That's pretty amazing. I only made that comment because I had no idea what it could be used for but a dash cam is pretty useful idea for certain things I suppose

Is the suction cup really strong enough to hold the (fairly considerable) weight of the Xoom?
The suction holder I have for my TomTom is the best I have used so far and even that falls off occasionally with the meagre weight of my TomTom. I don't really care about my TomTom but I don't want to be picking bits of Xoom out of my footwell.

We use these to mount Xoom tablets on our tow motors. They work VERY well even in a manufacturing environment.

I just ordered myself one of these the other day. It was half the price of the ram mount and review of the ram mount were stating how the arm was a little to short. Anybody has any updated opinions or tips on using the MENB-ME-04-Windshield?
I already know that I would never leave this thing on the windshield with my xoom if i get out of the car.
I've been using this for a ciuple of weeks now. It is a vent-mounted holder and, as my vents are a little bit to the loose side, I was a little afraid the whole thing wouldn't provide a solid mount for the rather heavy xoom... However, it sits in the car, not as stiff as a rock, but close enough Also, all it blocks are my vents, nothing else
If you guys want, I can post some pictures

I also bought this mount and I love it. Work extremely well. I've tried a few other ones and this one is by far the best.
I've been using a Ram Mount (product #RAM-HOL-MOTO3U) in my car since last Christmas and absolutely love it. It's mounted to a AMPs mounting plate that extends a couple of inches out from the console. I had the plate installed years ago for satellite radio use (no longer needed!). To accomplish the mounting I also utilized one of Ram Mount's arm-style ball mounts (product #RAM-B-101U).
This solution isn't the cheapest, but I think it's the best. It can be positioned in just about any fashion with the double socketed arm, stays off the windshield/out of your line of sight, and is immediately accessible right above the gear shift.
I can post some pics later if anyone is interested.
I have never been a fan of car mounts, I just hate putting stuff on my window and the suction cups eventually fail. I've seen universal mounts that mount on your air vents but those are big and bulky and don't have the OEM look and feel. So I decided to make my own...

Fair warning, if I pass you going down the road and you're watching a movie in the front seat, I will be running you off the road and into the ditch.
Seriously man, you don't need the cops to tell you that kind of distraction is really ****ing stupid.

Lol with the exception of my Q5 all the vehicles I have owned have had video playback. As a matter a fact, my first car in 1999 had a custom monitor. Turning the channel on the radio is a distraction. You should YouTube "Vic Gundotra Mercedes". So it doesn't matter if your watching TV or not.

That looks great! How well does it fit with your phone? I was never a fan of universal mounts, just because they tend to be bulky since they have to be a "one size fits all" solution. I prefer more of an OEM approach where its as slim as possible. I do like your setup though, thanks for sharing +1

Honestly it fits nice and snug. Also great because I can use any size case I want. The mount rotates 360 degrees and has padded clamps for the phone with an easy access eject button. For being an unheard brand, its definitely high quality and extremely durable/sturdy. I'd recommend it to anyone with a smart phone.

I've used the Mountek mounts now for nearly 2 years. Had it for my droidx. Also have other family members using it for the iPhone and GPS devices, etc. They work great and also allow a certain degree of angulation - maybe 15 degrees or so in addition to the 360 degree swivel feature. Can be used with any case and also leave the camera free for use if required.
That looks really good. I think I'm going to try and do something like that with my Pro Clips mount. I want to order the Nexus holder, but at $60 including shipping the thought of paying that makes me wanna puke.
I like the looks of the mount by the OP but with a case on the phone, it won't work. I bought the Arkon unit a few months ago and it is nice but big. The CD slot mount looks neat but does it does it hurt the slot opening in any way? There is usually a felt lining on the cd opening?

great work however having cold AC going over the hot CPU or GPU is not a good idea because condensation can build up and lead to corrosion over time.
Its why people don't cool there desktop computers with external air conditioners, if its just the fan blowing its fine.

Actually, The AC is de-humidified. That is why many de-foggers also turn the AC on with the heat to clear the windshield.
The CD player will not be harmed. There are 4 teeth that stick into the CD player only about a half an inch, not far enough to hurt the CD player. There is a knob on the bottom of the unit that you twist to tighten the grip of the teeth. Basically when tightening, two teeth are forced up and two down to make sure the harness is sturdy. The teeth are basically a soft plastic.

That's what I'm going to try. Bracketron offers several different AMPs to ball mount plates. I'd post a link but this is literally my first post.
I'm hoping one of those ball plates will fit into the GNex mount. I also bought short (2-3") 3.5mm audio and micro USB charging cables that I will then try bonding/fiberglassing to the cradle so I don't have to plug them in every time. And then cutting the top of the stupid mount off so I can slide the phone in from the top
Hey everyone,
I have tried many car phone mounts, but none of them worked as I was wishing.
Then I googled this keyword "minimal car mount" and suddenly found this interesting idea based on magnetic power.

I was also looking for a minimalistic mount for my phone. I hate those suction cup and dashboard mounts so I got the tetrax xway and I love it. It mounts nicely on my dash near and blends into my stereo. Having the little metal nipple on my phone is a bit annoying but the convenience of quickly and securely attaching my phone to my car is worth it.

Maybe old school thinking but, aren't magnets harmful to most electronics?

They are using different kind of technology that doesn't create strong magnetic field. Each holder has 4 tiny magnets.

I've been using these magnet mounts in my car for a couple years. They have worked great on:
HTC Wildfire
Optimus 2X
Galaxy S3
Navigon SATNAV (much heavier than a smartphone)
Walkman MP3 Player
Anything with metal in it like a pen!
Nothing has ever fallen off even over potholes and rough country tracks. All wifi 3g bluetooth are unaffected but cant verify NFC as I dont use it.
The only glitch I spotted was that the orientation sensor on the wildfire didnt respond (if I turned the phone from portrait to landscape whilst attached it wouldnt rotate the screen), but the other phones didnt have that problem.
I love it. Even though my magnet is larger (about the size of a 50p), its discreet and effective. I would recommend to anyone.
I have always used the stick on ones not the clip on, but as long as they clip ok to your vent and you dont blast hot air directly to the phone it should be ok.
I use their X-Way model as part of my near perfect car mount solution.
So obviously, it all starts with the Tetrax X-Way. I mounted that directly to one of the vents in the middle of my car. It does block the vest quite a bit, but it's the perfect spot for me and doesn't involve any adhesive on my dash. At first, I tried attaching one of the little nipple things to the back of my phone directly. While this worked, it drove me nuts that I couldn't lay my phone flat on a table anymore. This became a problem when I accidentally bumped my S3 while it was sitting on a table and since there was less friction now, the thing went flying. So not good.
My solution was to pick up a dirt cheep slim case. That's how I ended up with the elago G5 Slim Fit Case. With the nipple attached to that, I could just slip my phone in/out of that and leave the case sitting in my arm rest compartment when not in use. Now I had the awesome form factor of my S3 and the ability to mount. So the next issue was the connection.
Like almost everyone else, I was using the cigarette lighter along with a curly charging cord that was 5x longer than it needed to be. Worse, the giant power wart that was now sticking out of my dash. Not only was this ugly, it was a pain in the but to store. What I really wanted to use was a small USB cable, 6-8 inches long, that could fit with my new case in my arm rest and a way to ditch the giant dash wart. The cable is easy enough to find, but how do I plug it in? With the Griffin Powerjolt Dual! While there are a bunch of USB port adaptors floating aorund, this was the first I found that would actually sit flush against the dash. This means I wouldn't have any stupid wart thing to deal with, the look of my dash wouldn't be thrown off, and since I don't smoke, I could just leave it in full time.
The big win in all of this is two fold. First, I could ditch the bulky plastic car mount garbage for a few thin and easy to store version. Second, I did the same thing (but with a different case) for my wife's Galaxy Nexus. Now we can both use the same mount depending on who's driving (or if we pick up a second X-Way, we can both charge and mount at the same time thanks to the dual ports on the Powerjolt) and save even more room in the car since we didn't need two giant device specific car mounts. The other minor bonus here is that the X-Way came with enough of those attachment nipples that I should be able to roll along for a few years using the same mounting system across multiple new devices.

My friend has this solution for his BB and loves it. I wasn't willing to pay the price the local Best Buy wanted. I found a different magnet system at my local Bell store.
Something similar to this. I stuck the large magnet to my dash and the other magnet is on my case. I've had zero issues with NFC. Bash cash mount kit imo.
Hoping to receive mine soon! Anyone else using it and has more thoughts to share?

So I got the vent mount version and it works great in my car. In my truck the clip does not fit the vent. I placed the circle towards the top of the phone like it says and it hangs in portrait. In the video it shows it going between portrait and landscape, it doesn't do that. You get one orientation unless you put the connector in the middle I would guess. Other than that it is perfect.
