[Official] HTC Car dock with cut out for camera - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Here is the ordering link for the official HTC Incredible 2 or S as its internationally known as car dock. It even has a cut out for the camera so you can record all your boring drives to work.

If you read carefully, it's actually not for the rear camera, it's for the front camera. This dock is also sold on the vzw website. It's for video conferencing. Why anyone should be doing this in the car is beyond me, but there you have it. From the VZW item:
Provides unobstructed camera view for 2-way video conferencing. Vehicle Mount transforms your device into a multifunctional navigation tool! Easily and safely gain access to maps, voice search, your contacts and more with a single touch!

If you like your device mounted in landscape view this is probably the best dock you can get. Outside of that, I wouldn't recommend it. It blocks the volume buttons.

Here is another one Officially from HTC. It looks like the N1 original dock with the metal pole for support. Not sure how the phone fits in but if you look at the reviews they say it works great.

This first mount you listed is available on ebay for 5.99. It also shows the rear of the mount and definitely has a cut out for the rear camera. Also does not seem to block volume buttons

edit...they look similar but I see now they aren't.

My old mount didn't cover the camera either. The problem is the mount shows in the camera view and blocks a good portion of it. Might take some work to minimize this.
I do like the idea of a fitted mount, but my cradle works great without blocking vital functionality (including the front facing camera ). It does block the rear camera though.

I was thinking the same thing, the area behind the mount will block the rear camera. Really not a big deal unless there is some important reason for using the camera while driving? Only other option would be if you mounted the suction cup to your dash and angled the arm down, that might work if you have a dash that the cup sticks to.

I know it's an old thread but I thought I'd give a reason for using your camera while driving. My Dad uses an app called DailyRoads Voyager because he was the victim of a hit and run once and it acts like cop's dashcam essentially. Oddly enough about 2 weeks after he started using it, he was inside a gas station and forgot to turn it off and caught the abduction of a little girl. Thanks to his video they were able to identify and capture the suspect within hours.

That's pretty amazing. I only made that comment because I had no idea what it could be used for but a dash cam is pretty useful idea for certain things I suppose

Car mount

Anyone found a good car windshield mount for using GPS?
All the ones I've seen looks like they'd block view and are all designed to hold it vertically. (Would be be afraid of it falling out if there were not support on all 4 sides)
here's the samsung OEM one, probably the most secure but i just don't like the amount of visual "real estate" it takes up - ie too likely to block view of the road http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/...ype=acc_detail&subsubtype=car-kits&returnurl=
i ordered one of these, fairly cheap, and it is a 3 point grip, off ebay, but figured it would serve till i decided which one i wanted to go with
might just make out of fiberglass to mount low on top of the dashboard (ie no pedestal)
same seller on ebay has two others, one is very similiar to the samsungs in term of the pedestal and the other is vent mount

I actually like that one... My phone doesn't get here until Tuesday (hopefully) but this looks like a great option
i like the samsung one actually, looks sturdy and secure, and the details say it comes with a suction cup windshield mount and a dash mount. I signed up to be notified of when the backorder clears up. Considering I cleared up my phone's gps issues today, i'm actually excited for this.

actually have it here now (came in the other day) and i was more impressed with it than i expected to be - the mechanical functions of the suction lock handle &
the knob that tightens the ball socket at the back of the holder (that socket that lets you finitely adjust angle 3 dimensionally) is actually impressively solid
the plastic holder shell, once i got it on the bracket, is stronger than i imagined - for $11 shipped, i'm happy and may just stay with this one
I bought this one

wouldn't take much to cut a hole in it, but that isn't a bad idea - i've actually had moments where i thought about getting one everytime some idiot nearly causes an accident by cutting in front of me, from 2 lanes over to make an exit ramp he shouldn't be trying to make, only to hit the brakes hard just as he's in front of me (the cabs in vegas have em)
I got one that mounts in the cup holder. In my truck the windshield is too far away but there is a cup holder in the perfect position. The main cup holder that I use is still open so I don't lose anything. Also, it rotates to landscape mode (either direction) with a click.

yea i guess it wouldn't take too much effort to take a dremel to the mount and make a hole for the camera.
Some one a few posts up linked to a very small mount that would leave the top of the phone uncovered.
i don't know if you guys know about the brodit/proclip ones, but they have been the best mount i've found for just about any phone or device i've ever used.
its an intermodal system that has an attatchment custom made for your car model and a separate one for your specific device.
i have found those to be the absolute best, hands down. i live in socal and spend a good part of my life on the road so i have tried about every brand and these are the best.
http://www.proclipusa.com/
they only have one for the galaxy s right now, but i emailed my customer service rep and he emailed back right away telling me they are working on a custom one for the vibrant and that he would email me when they were done.
i am currently using my hd2 mount with the gelskin on which sorta works until they come up with one for this device.

looks really nice, but hella expensive once you add the car mount and the device holder. i thought samsung's was expensive, but unless there's some huge benefit to the proclip i'm going to probably get samsung's or a 3rd party generic mount like arkon's universal mount
well the advantage such as it is is that once you buy the car mount it works for all devices in the future and fits your specific car like a glove. especially useful if you have a unique car (i drive an element) where suction mounts or other things don't work. i know its expensive, but i've found it to be worth it. my devices never fall or hit anything or vibrate and are always exactly within arms reach. definitely an investment though.
I haven't received my phone yet but does anybody know if the Vibrant has a "Car Mode"
I know the original droid would sense the magnets in the oem car mount go into car mode automatically. The Droid X does also.

i think you might be right... i know they are usually very specific about testing and stuff, so if that's the case im sure they will update the listing to say its available for both. on the hd2 the dimensions were slightly off and they had a mount for the tmous hd2 out about three days after launch.
EDIT: looking at official specs, the vibrant is supposed to be 0.3mm wider, for what its worth
dunno about the car mode, but doesn't sound like its the same thing. the question would be: does the vibrant have a magnetic sensor? otherwise its just going to have to be some kind of app, which i do not believe is included, but might be available on market...

Car Mount

has anyone purchased a decent car mount for the vibrant? I'm all over the web looking for one that I certainly wouldn't regret in buying. So, please post links, opinions, and maybe pics. thank you
I do not have it yet, but i saw this get posted several times with some good reviews http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.37823
The Verizon Fascinate is coming out this week and the press release says there will be a mount. I'm going to take my phone by a Verizon store and see if they have one they'll open and let me check fit.
Car Dock – Attachable to the windshield or dashboard, the car dock displays turn-by-turn GPS navigation instructions, rotates freely between landscape and portrait modes, and features a preloaded Samsung “Car Home” application, giving customers access to everything the “Desk Home” app can do while on the go. The car dock is available for $39.99.

Due to the similar size and shape, I'm betting most generic ipod touch/iphone mounts out there will fit. Planning on checking walmarts offerings and maybe bestbuy sometime this week.
I just bought this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150481766101&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I think its great if you're not using a case, snaps right it and doesn't move, and the mount seems nice and firm. The holes for the speakerphone and camera are all in the right places so its good to go.
Only complaint i have is the top snap portion is a little long and gets caught in the seam between the front and back cover if you're not careful. I snipped a tiny bit off the end of it to blunt the end a little bit, and am careful to pull the snap back when i slide the phone in, and its nice.
There are is a thread in here as well and/or the i9000 accessories forum that discusses a few options if you are using a case.

And on that note, i called my corp Verizon rep and ordered one - free overnight shipping. Part# is "SAMI500MNT"
SHould be here tomorrow @ 3:30'ish, that's when Mr. Fedex shows up.
I'll post details and pics if it's legit and ends up workin on the Vibrant.
(had to edit quote as i'm too new to post links)
Much to my dismay, not only is the micro-USB connector lower on the Fascinate than on the Vibrant, rendering the dock useless unless you remove the Vibrant's battery cover & insert at an angle, but the phone doesn't seem to recognize the usb connection. Although it does give you the audible signal that it's been plugged in - the charging indicator disappears immediately and audio is not passed through the 3.5mm jack at the back of the dock.
The overall design of the car dock is very nice and I can only hope TMO will bring something along these lines for the Vibrant.
Here are some pics of the car dock for the Fascinate, for those who happened to be curious.

Since the Galaxy is light in weight and came with 2 back covers, I did a DIY with velcro. I lined it up to my center dash (horizontally), hooked up the AUX and charger and BAM...only 5 bucks! I now have Google NAV/traffic and .MP4s at my finger tips.

Just got this mount today and well.......it's a very tight fit. This is perfect for anything smaller than the Vibrant size, otherwise it's a tight fit or won't fit at all. I won't recommend it if you need a mount where you can move the phone in and out of the mount quickly, otherwise, it should do well.
I use this one:
http://www.meritline.com/car-holder...-windshield-with-suction-mount---p-54018.aspx
With my Vibrant. Works great. You've got to be careful with the clip though to make sure you don't release it too soon it it'll snag between the battery cover and phone.
Overall very nice & doesn't obscure the phone at all & the phone can rotate 360 degrees with almost no effort (though it hasn't happened accidentally or when I've hit a bump or anything).
Anyone ever heard of proclipusa.com? They are a bit expensive but I had it for my iPhone in my 06 acura TL and it was awesome! Haven't ordered for the vibrant yet but am going to soon.

Mountek MT5000

If you haven't tried or seen the Mountek MT5000, you should take a look.
I ordered mine from Amazon for $20 shipped and have ben using it for a few days. I have to say this is one amazing mount. Not only does it fit in the CD slot, but any slot you have anywhere. Using mine at my desk at work and in the car.
Great idea.

I have one in the car and love it.
thinking about getting another for work.
I got mine about 2 weeks ago, and I love it. I have the Ballistic HC case, and it still fits in the mount. I never thought about using it at work for other slots.
that thing looks awesome, i think i'll be investing in one of these soon
Guys, get this mount. This is the mount to end all mounts. It is so awesome. It installs in like 10 seconds flat. You put your phone on there and just squeeze to clamp it down. It rotates to portrait or landscape, and you can turn the phone to face you if you need to.
I'd been using it for a while with the CD slot, and then today I discovered that it was even more awesome installed on the vent because now I don't even have to look down. The guy who invented this thing is a genius. The only thing better than this mount, in my opinion, is the Palm Touchstone, but that doesn't exist for Evos. :-/
I also think that this mount is great. Such a clever design and the customer service at mountek is really good too.
FYI - You can snip out a gap on the removable bottom mount to make room for a charging cable
very cool idea, and I would free up the vent I am currently not able to blow on my face for this summer lol.

Actually, you can remove the bottom altogether if you want to ... it's removable and pops right off. I've found it unnecessary as the mount grips my Evo just fine in portrait or landscape without it.
My take on the mount
With all the glowing reviews here I'm somewhat hesitant to chime in but:
- if you are thinking this mount is in any way specific to the EVO- it's not; it's a generic sort of think which uses two pads and pressure to hold the sides of your phone.
- while the bottom bit of the holder can be removed, it's essential to do so because your charger will not fit into the phone with it there. It's WAY too much of a pain to remove the phone from it's case just to use this mount and I can't see using the phone without an extended battery.
- if you have an extended battery or a case the mount will basically not work- you may get it "in there" but the phone will be on the edge of the rubber pads and pop out on the first bump or when you try and use the phone (pressing on screen or trying to wake it up with the power button
- they do offer a money back warranty but as with most things these days it would cost me so much in shipping to send it back it's not worth the hassle but I'm sorry I got the thing- useless for my purposes and didn't work for my wife's EPIC either and not just because there's aren't provisions for the slide- it wouldn't hold her phone securely at all and she's caseless with stock battery.
TLDR: maybe a good idea but much flawed in execution. I'd return it if it was cost effective.
I see reviews that state that it works with the extended battery and case, which is perfect for me!
Does anyone know if you can swivel it left and right to change viewer angles?

Yes it swivels a bit -- not much but enough to give you a good viewing angle from the driver's seat. You can also rotate it to portrait or landscape depending on your preference.
I have one with an extended battery and it fits fine. Bumps don't knock it loose. I only have to place it a little farther then the middle so it doesn't press the volume buttons.

I don't know what the other guy is talking about, I have the extended battery and case and mine ddoesn't pop out. I'm actually very pleased with it. I did remove the bottom bracket.
I've been waiting for this product to be re-stocked. Apparently, they've been sold out for a while now. Pre-ordered it in May and it finally arrived this weekend. So far so good! Fits my Droid Incredible but the charge port is blocked unless I remove the support bar. The side arms seem to hold snugly without it, but I'll have to shoot them an email and ask about that. Also looks like they've made some mods. The CD blade looks slightly different than the product photo and the tightening wheel is now smaller. I feel pretty good about this purchase. Build quality is higher than I expected. Seems durable too. We'll see how it continues to perform with time...
*****
Wow, I sent them an email and already got a response: "The device rest [support bar] is optional/detachable, and in most cases, the mount can hold your phone without it." So I guess I'm good.
Looks nice, but does it do any damage to the inside of the player? anyone have problems with the player trying to take it as a cd? this might be a great solution for my element.

The Mountek MT5000 does not damage the CD player at all.
The blades never touch any part of the disc loading mechanism. It only fits into the slot opening where you then turn the knob just enough to spread the blades to gently hold the MT5000 into place.
If you still have CDs in the player, they can still be used too because the MT5000 doesn't engage any of the player's CD eject or load functions.
would this mount work for the evo 3d?

It should work for the Evo 3d with no problems.
How many turns is everyone giving the tightening rod? The guy in the video gave it like two turns.. I'm cranking mine a few times.. And it can keep turning, but I thought it might be enough
I bought one a while ago, feels a bit cheap in terms of build quality but it does work as advertised.

Ultimate Anti-Vibration Dash Cam Mount for E4GT

As stated above, I'm looking for the best ANTI-VIBRATION car mount so I can use the E4GT as a dashcam during my daily commutes.
The "exomount universal car mount" seems to get a lot of praise:
http://www.amazon.com/MSW-Exogear-Exomount-Universal-Mount/dp/B004Z8ZLOS
What is everyone using?
Preferred criteria:
1) ANTI-VIBRATION PROPERTIES!
2) Excellent suction mounting on any surface (easily positionable anywhere and safe for all vehicle surfaces)
3) Not too bulky and thick.
4) Ball joint (or alternative) to allow for infinite positioning of phone
5) Camera lens port

Ultimate Dash Cam mount:

For the Ultimate Dashcam app the following criteria should be met:
1) Able to customize video length by size (_GB) before looping over to preserve memory space and have overall user control
2) Able to record in any and all quality modes the camera is capable of, including night-time recording mode
3) Able to record with the E4GT Screen OFF to reduce battery drain and reduce distraction to driver
4) Able to sync with GPS/google maps
5) BONUS: able to customize overlay including but not limited to- speed, gps location, time, temperature, SYNC with TORQUE APP overlays & data!?!? or maybe just able to natively receive OBD2 data transmission from a bluetooth OBD2 module.
Any apps come close to the above? What's the best Dash Cam app you guys are using?

he probably came from the iphone and doesn't understand basic social protocol in forums...
I just bought the linked ExoMount and it arrived 2 days ago. So far I'm very satisfied with it, it keeps the phone stable, is a overall smaller mount than some of the other solutions. The spring loaded clip holds on to the Epic Touch securely. My only gripe is that I wish they made the mount with less plastic and more aluminum/metal. Overall the build quality is acceptable and the mount works great for what it was designed.
I recorded some video while mounted as a 'dash cam' and due to the position of the camera sensor you'll have to slide the phone to side while mounted, or find a mounting position that doesn't block any of the camera's view.
Previously I purchased a universal car mount by Arkon and it was bulkier, the suction cup didn't work nearly as well, and didn't secure my phone.. it would slip off after sharp turns..

Yes, I actually was considering the Arkon model as I randomly encountered it while on Amazon. I guess the plastic build makes it lighter? Hopefully, quality does not suffer as a result.
When you mounted it as a dash cam, did the video come out very shaky from the road vibrations or was it nice and smooth or at least bearable to be used as a dedicated dashcam mount?
ctbearz, totally off topic, is that a cat in your avatar, and do you have a larger pic of it? wife would totally love it.

The quality is much higher, but the sound is ass. This is using the samsung mount, recorded 55 mins worth of high def. It killed battery...even though it was plugged in. I had a passenger so I had to set the base in the way. Top speed was 85, in the concrete dip it bottomed out.
This was on a closed road, and done by a professional driver...

Use either the stock windshield mount dock, or the Samsung Infuse one - see if the special is still going for $15. Either way, both have the hole cut out for the camera already for this reason.
If you've had windshield mounts that vibrated in the past, chances are they were mounted on a gooseneck or similar, that can be set into oscillation really easily. Neither the ET4G or Infuse windshield mount are like that, these are solid, adjustment made with a ball that tightens rigidly with a collar nut. That means these won't vibrate any more than your windshield itself.
And there is some vibration protection in that the suction cups are rubber/silicone. I suspect your past experiences are not vibration but oscillation though. Cars themselves don't vibrate, or shouldn't...
If your windshield is vibrating, that's bad news - could indicate your motor mounts are shot, they are supposed to isolate vibration (Google NVH).
If you mean eliminating jarring when you drive over potholes - that isn't something that even advanced camcorders with anti-shake can fully resolve, and it's done at the digital level, not built into your phone. Rubber mounts won't do anything for this, other than possibly increase oscillation - sort of like driving over a bump in a sports car, then riding over it in an old Cadillac - you feel the hit more in the sports car, but it stops instantly, where the old Cadillac absorbs more of the initial impact, but sets the suspension in oscillation, bouncing up, down, maybe up, down again, eventually settling down.
If you've got some sort of specialized application like a drag car with a V8 and solid motor mounts that you want to record your run down the strip, you'll need specialized equipment. Standard cars don't vibrate, so you'll be fine.
Also, the stock mounts come with a disk backed with double-sided tape, so you could adhere it to the dash and suction-cup mount to that disc as an alternative to the windshield.
It's also the standard four-square-post mount, you can clip off the actual phone dock from the suction cup mount, to adapt to another mount, or you could fabricate your own, and still have the solid phone mount. By far, the ET4G or Infuse factory dock will hold your phone most securely, and without allowing for oscillation, more so than one of those grab-your-phone-via-foam-pads that has some play and give even tightened up.
In regards to an ultimate dashcam APP, I think a good work around for the screen being on issue is an app called screen filter. It allows you to super dim your screen to variable levels, and disabling is as easy as touching the active notification in the drop down. So, you could lower your brightness all the way, then find the right level in screen filter to where it's barely visible (youll need to be able to see a LITTLE so you can disable it...or else pull your battery lol.). It does work while in the camera app, I've done it before.

Less vibrating mount than this one
I found this video on youtube ... (Link its not available) search for ExoMount Vibration Test on you tube
it have some moments where the movie vibrate a bit.
Does any one have informations about a better dash cam mount?
or this its the best one?

Looking for Ideas, A100 Dashboard camera

So I remember a few weeks ago the guy who did a fantastic job installing an A100 in his cars dash. Well the wife and myself currently have a dashboard camera(we live in Niagara Falls and tourists drive like idiots).
So I was looking for taking my A100 and make it into a dashboard unit. So I'm hunting for recommendations on a rig as well as apps. I also want to use it as a GPS and a MP3 players via FM transmitter.
Now I'm tried Moto360 for the dash, but it seems no matter what you do with the settings the video res comes out like crap. Also I'm a winamp guy, but I think I Want something that plays full screen instead of just a widget.
Lastly I want the set up to be movable since we plan on purchasing a new car in a few months.
So lets see what ideas we have, I have a basic concept, but I'm sure some brainstorming will come up with a better idea.
Thanks
I wanted to mount mine, what are you using for a mount unit? I always liked copilot for offline gps functionality.

I actually have this plastic box that i was considering cutting from the outside corner to the inside corner to make it triangle and then cut out a mount hole for the tablet and a viewing hole on the other side. with that it will look like it's part of the dash, but it might be to big.
I know I've seen mounts like a GPS mount but I don't believe it would be stable enough.
