I should have tried before answering, cause it can.
Can Allshare be used in tge same way, or is it only for media files?

I downloaded Kies and I connected Epic 4G touch through USB and it doesn't recognize it.
It's always "connecting..."
and nothing.
Anyone else with the same problem?
Windows 7 could not find/install a driver either for this phone.

Yes and speaking of AllShare I downloaded it today and installed it on my HTPC and it worked like a charm. I can sit back on the couch and play what ever media I have on my phone on the computer.
I have a HTPC and its connected to my NON Samsung 42 inch 1080P tv. Now my phone cant talk to the tv but it can talk to the PC by having Kies and AllShare installed.
Kies is good to manage the phone via wifi and AllShare is good to play your media on your phone on the NON DLNA supported tv's ( via pc ).
Worked great, played a 1.5 hour movie today and not one skip, hicup or anything using AllShare. Also tested using pictures and music, all worked like a charm.
If you have a DLNA compatable tv from Samsung then you will not need AllShare installed on the pc. The phone will talk directly to the tv.
If you want to "manage" your phone ie sync, copy and move or just do managment type things I would use Kies. If you want to play your media on your tv then use AllShare.
Fyi, if you want to do the traditional usb connection sync, usb debugging in the application development settings must be enabled. Odd, I know, but it is the case.

When I connected the Nexus to my work PC...I was able to transfer an .avi file however I got a message indicating it would not be viewable on my mobile. Sure enough, it doesn't play. I haven't tried other formats but thats something different from what I'm used to with all my other Android devices. Am I doing something wrong?

I have a PS3 and Apple TV. So far, I have been unable to get the built-in DLNA on my One X to see either. I installed iMediashare, which has always worked on my other android phones and it doesn't seem to work correctly.
At this point, I can't seem to push any media from my phone to other devices.
Anyone know of an app that works, or am I doing something wrong?
Update: I have tried pretty much every DNLA app on the Play Store and none of them work. Most of them lock up my wifi and I have to reset the connection to get internet working again. WTF? Why do the simplest things (voice dialing, DNLA, multitasking) not work on this phone?
Just tested iMediashare on my One X and it is working just fine. So it shoud work...

Yeah, I got an e-mail from the Developer. Turns out, it was something wrong with their servers. It's odd, because my Nexus was working fine at the time the One X wasn't. It's working fine for me now, too.
you have custom or stock rom, what is it?
mine work fine, I play it every day

Don't know if any asker still needs this, but here goes. I was also quite stumped as to how to stream media from HOX to PS3.
After quite extensive searching high and low on the interjacks, I come to these conclusions/solutions:
1. HTC purposely make it difficult/impossible to simply share media with DLNA clients JUST TO SELL their MediaLink HD.
2. For those who wants to stream their media (videos/pics/music), especially to Playstation 3 (PS3 - [for search engines]) simply download the free SKIFTA from Google Play. Instructions are straight forward, I was playing silly videos and HD trailers off my phone in no time.
Press that little thanks button if this has been helpful Thanks.
Found this thread through a search.
How is browsing other devices' content via DNLA done on the One X?
Mine is stock, S720E, CID_001 running Android 4.0.4.
From the gallery, whether viewing a picture or a movie, More > Select player shows my TV (connected to the same SSID as the One X). Hit it and it the content on my TV screen.
However from the TV, I am unable to browse the One X, like I am able to browse my SIII (GT_I9300).
Could anyone help please?
It appears that regardless of the ROM or kernel, if your phone is rooted then the Allshare Cast Wireless Hub will not work. I've searched through nearly every Rom thread in the development section and I couldn't find anyone that has it working. I've tried resetting the flash counter to 0 via Triangle Away and tried using the stock rom and kernel to no avail. The wireless hub was a Christmas gift from my mother and I don't have the heart to take it back because as it stands now it's a $70 paper weight. I looked through the rules and it doesn't appear that these types of threads are against the rules. I'm hoping that someone can find a fix for this that will make it work on rooted phones. I'm even willing to send out my wireless hub to a developer if they don't have one so they can try to fix it.

I had one for a week before returning it to Amazon. It wasn't reliable for me. I seem to remember rooting being ok. However, the Rom and recovery would need to be stock. Maybe I remember wrong.

I'll match you hoffy, I would love to see the hub reliably fixed for our s3's without going back to stock.
I can only match you frustration. I have spent many hours trying myself and researching how to fix this only to find that it appears to be a problem within the kernel its self. With the Rom, kernel, and everything stock it works. I have tried on many threads to see if we could get a dev to pick this up with no avail. We have some great kernels out there and besides who wants to stay 100% stock or let's face it why would we be on Xda forums. I would be willing to donate as well. Their has to be some way to resolve the issue.

I might be misunderstanding the purpose of the hub - AllShare used to be a version of media streaming protocol, allowing devices like Xboxes and bluray players to stem media from your phone. Is the hub supposed to be a way of adding that capability to tvs that don't have it built in?
Or is it supposed to allow full screen sharing? (As in being able to see your home screen or play Angry Birds on your big screen, for example)

Yes. It has an HDMI out to TVs that are not Samsung Smart TVs.

I have a Samsung smart tv, and I can't figure out how to make my Galaxy note show it's screen directly. It does link DNLA as photos or videos but then in simple sequential mode with no apps to control it with.

I'm not a programmer so I don't know what the difference might be. But I got a Samsung BD-E6500 blue-ray player for X-mass and I am able to stream videos and pictures from my phone using Allshare. I have a rooted S3 running Wicked Sensations ROM. The only modification I had to make to my phone was reinstalling my Samsung account on the phone.
Hope this info helps point somebody in the right direction.

DLNA only does media streaming, not screen sharing.

The difference is that with media streaming, the file is played by the device being streamed to (streaming basically means that the file is played as it is downloaded, rather than waiting for the whole file to transfer before starting playback). The media must be prerecorded, so live interaction with an app is impossible (and tvs and bluray players have no idea what to do with an apk file).
Screen sharing is more like connecting a camera to your tv and pointing it at your phone's screen - the phone does all of the processing, which is why you can see the android interface and all of your apps in real time. It's basically like your phone is the computer and the tv is just the monitor.

Such screen sharing is just what I want. It allows you to use all the nice tools and apps on the phone, instead of the crude sequential slide shows one can see on the TV, for example. Also, sometimes I want to demo a program or show a map from my phone on the big screen, so others can see it happen (looking over one's shoulder isn't optimal!).
Allshare cast requires a additional accessories. Call a hub. It will then share your phone screen with other devices. Tv's. Cpu etc

Also if you want to stream go to settings. Then more settings and turn on nearby devices. Then you can stream to any wifi connected device. No hub
Needed. The hub is only for screen share

Unfortunately, you won't be able to do that with a bluray player... If you can connect a computer to a display large enough for your needs (such as your tv), then you might be able to set up a vnc server on your phone and a vnc viewer on the computer. The setup might take some tweaking, especially to deal with screen rotation, and vnc is likely to have a slight lag... otherwise, it appears that the AllShare hub or a similar device (if one exists and is compatible) will be the only other way to do wireless screen sharing
On a semi related note, does anyone here know what the hdmi cable for the S3 will display on the external screen? In other words, does it share the screen or just media that is playing on the phone?

Let me start off with a disclaimer: I have never used Allshare, nor do I have a hub. That being said, I would put a good chunk of money on the problem being caused by HDCP. I would recommend researching this.

It will share the screen, if you have the proper cable (and 5-11 pin adapter with some older cables); I have a Galaxy Note II, and that also works well sharing the screen. One can also use DLNA features to share media, but I find that screen sharing is much more convenient, since one has all the user interface advantage of the Android apps. I also would prefer if screen sharing could be done wireless. Samsung is being coy about this issue, I think, confusing everyone with the AllShare names, keeping the descriptions vague, etc. If one can share screen wirelessly with any Samsung Smart TV, even the latest, I haven't seen any posts to verify that. Some posts seem to imply that the "dongle" is needed only for older TVs, but that seems to be incorrect (and the dongle seems not to work well in any case from my reading). I would be happy to have these conclusions refuted.
AllShare Cast HUB mirrors everything u see on ur phone on ur tv. AllShare App streams pics, videos, music. Just like IMedia Share. Mirroring and Streaming are different.

The vid below is the only proof I was able to find of it working with a modified ROM. His kernel looks stock. I tried it with Whomp 2.6 with no luck although he is running 2.4 in this vid. I had already bought TriangleAway from PlayStore which did reset my flash counter on-screen without the resetting phone cycle it goes through otherwise but I think this was only when I had Perseus kernel or before I said yes to the MA7 update which failed anyway due to not being stock. Now that I set it back to stock kernel with stock boot loader TA will no longer visually reset my flash counter. I originally rooted with the Note2 toolkit and opted for adding the insecure boot image. I am going to try to just re-flash to complete stock and use CF auto and see how it goes. I just want to use my allshare cast dongle so I can keep the phone charged when screen sharing AND be rooted. Stupid to have to jump through so many hoops to use this dongle and some apps that only work if rooted.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeKPxZiimpo
**Update** I messed with it some more and tried to keep track of the variable steps I did to make it work for me. I left Whomp 2.6 installed and did a full wipe in stock boot-loader. I noticed after 1st boot before any updates or downloads happened that my device status reported as "normal". The 1st things I downloaded were my SuperSU Pro key and my paid Triangle Away. I ran Triangle Away which was no longer able to give an on-screen flash count in android on the stock kernel but it seems to do what it is supposed to do as it showed everything was stock in download mode. After I rebooted from the 1st run of Triangle Away I checked status which was in a long cycle of "scanning" only to end in "Modified" status. I finally got Allshare Cast to work like the vid above. I'm pretty sure you just need to check the box at the bottom for the system modified workaround in Triangle Away. Now I need to update to MA7 and see if I can still have everything work.
**Working great update** Whompasaurus 2.7.1 and stock bootloader and stock kernel. Think I may have taken the "long-cut" but I pretty much got it all working with this ROM and Triangle Away. Allshare Cast dongle is working great. Watched every episode of CHOSEN on Crackle on the TV. Somehow I broke Pie Navigation Control so I just re-installed the APK and it works again. Only thing that fails now is trying to use the ROMs wifi tether which crashes the phones Settings but at least with no lockup just a slight delay and back to normal just no launching of wifi tether. I will try to do the same for that. For now I have Klink usb that I bought a while ago.
