Hi to all,
Since i've updated my Arc S to ICS 4.0.4 (official update), it keeps freezing all the time and sometimes i have to remove the battery and switch it back on. This happens also after a full wipe. I also unlocked the bootloader and flashed the DoomKernel and JJ's Hybrid Rom and now my Arc s goes fantastic smooth but still it keeps freezing. Basically when i'm using it blocks and wont unfreeze. This does not happen with Gingerbread..
Is this a kernel related problem? What should i do? I've already wiped and format my phone many times with no result. ICS in general presents this issue...should i try an other ROM or Kernel? Underclock my processor? Any ideas? It's really frustrating
I would suspect it's kernel related, DoomLord has yet to update his kernel for 431. I've not had one freeze on stock ICS with ArcKnight kernel.

ok i'll try to flash ArcKnight kernel and see what happens, i'll post if i can fix
Ok, i've been using Arcknight kernel for 2 days, it's not as smooth as DoomKernel but at least hasn't freez yet. Is there any way to improve my Arc S performance?

Can confirm this solved all the problems with her phone she was having.
Many thanks.

You could try to remove Sony bloatware. Use 'Es file explorer' for example to create a folder in your SD Card, get into Apps folder, inside System folder, and select everything you don´t use and copy them to the folder you have created (just to have a backup in case you remove something the phone really needs). After copying, you can delete them from system folder.
After removing bloatware from my phone, which runs stock ics with stock kernel and with processor running between 133mhz to 1024 mhz, it runs a lot better and battery always lasts from 24 to 48 hours with no freezes and no restarts. (I have had some problems long ago with dolphin browser always closing due to low ram in my phone, but nowadays I use boat or stock browser and usually watch for my phone´s memory through Es Task Killer)
Also, enter into 'leds' folder in your system and edit it so the backlight buttons won´t turn on. That saves even more juice in your phone.
Don´t be perfeccionist with your phone. As the time goes passing, surely it´s going to become weaker to new software releases.
And no way ICS is going to run smoother than Gingerbread, but no way also Gingerbread will have all the ornaments ICS has.
Remember: I´m not telling you what to do with your phone, I´m just suggesting that with a little bit of curiosity and customization (and not necessarily unlocking bootloaders or flashing other roms) you can make things work closer to the way you expect your phone to.
The best advice someone could give you here is: search! (hehe) The more you read, the more you´ll know.
Best regards...

My default android camera randomly stopped working. Earlier today I tried taking a photo and my phone froze until it finally went to a completely black screen. A message popped up saying I could wait or force close the app, and I clicked force close. Now every time I try to use the camera, I get the same black screen and the only way to get out of it is to lock and then unlock my phone.
EDIT: For some reason my Tapatalk app didn't have the Q&A thread, any way to move it?
This is a ROM error and occur in old builded ROMs such as MIUI, Old CyanogenMod Builds (CM6), and sometimes Virtous ROMs. This error is mainly because the system has an alternate Camera App running on the system thus controlling passages to the original Camera's files. This can be fixed by:
Choice 1: Flash a new ROM that is of newer build.
Choice 2: You can try fixing the permissions in Rom Manager and rebooting.
Choice 3: Use the alternate Camera app (Pre-Installed on the ROM)
Choice 4: Use a root accessible program and remove the system app.
If this helped a little please thank... Lol ;P
*If you need more help feel free to contact!
Thanks bud, what would you recommend would be the easiest method?
If your phone is rooted with S-OFF and all that other stuff then seriously just find a stable rom that you like. Then from there all you need to do is flash a new ROM by booting into recovery either by restarting the phone and holding volume down OR if you have ADB set up then use adb reboot recovery.
Flashing a stable rom will ultimately solve your camera problem. As for a stable rom I would definitely suggest virtuous ROM.
That would probably be the easiest way. Otherwise you could try extracting the camera apk from another rom and installing that which is an extremely difficult thing to do or install an alternate camera app from the market like fxCamera.
I'm fine with my stock ROM, but doesn't Virtuous eat up a lot of battery?
Also I've tried fixing permissions with ROM manager and it didn't work. I've tried using the Pure Gingerbread ROM from the Dev Forums, but the camera didn't work either.
Actually Virtous does use alot of battery mainly because all of the required processes needed to run the system. I think the best method is use a blackmarket app and download an alternate Camera or use the extra camera app on the phone...
--- I would say methods 3 and 4.

What "required processes" are you talking about? I haven't noticed battery drain to be any worse on Virtuous than CM7 or any other ROM.
I'm guessing I have to get a separate camera app then? Using another ROM or fixing permissions didn't work.
EDIT: Turns out Camera ZOOM FX doesn't work either.
In my opinion virtuous doesn't burn a lot of battery unless you use the stock kernel it comes with. I found that the battery life almost tripled when I flashed the advanced virtuous kernel (1.0.9) onto it.
Just to clarify, Every rom will consume a lot of battery. Some just run fewer processes in the background or are less CPU intensive but regardless of all of that if you use a power efficient kernel (essentially a driver for your android) then your battery life will sky rocket. You should be looking for UV or undervolted kernels.
Anyways, back to topic. Try flashing a newer radio onto your device. Then if you can try using Virtuous. Your camera should definitely work with virtuous in all honesty. If you like virtuous then just flash one of the advanced kernels and then watch the battery life sky rocket.

I don't know how to do that or where to even start. *sigh* Seems like anything I try fails.
Well if your phone is rooted then all you need to do download the ROM you want and the kernel you want. Then put them both on your sdcard. From there boot into recovery and then install via ZIP and then select your ROM first. After that process is complete you wanna restart your phone and set it all up. Once you're happy go into recovery again and then install the kernel.
If the camera worked before, and its not now, I would think a full wipe and flashing back to stock would work. Or just returning to an old nandroid backup (from when the camera was still working), if you have one. Or you might try a factory reset.
Also, if you switched ROMs, and the camera is still not working, I suspect that not wiping the data, cache, and dalvik might be the culprit. If you were going from a Froyo ROM to a Gingerbread ROM, you should do a full wipe.
Using an alternate app seems like a silly solution. It shouldn't be that hard to get your packed-in software working.
Also, I would not suggest changing the radio, unless you have specific reception and/or battery issues, or you are switching to a different ROM with a specific recommended radio. "If its not broke, don't fix it" is the common mantra for radio flashing, as its an unlikely but possible way to brick your phone. Its also possible your reception and battery life will be worse after changing radios. IMO, if your reception is good, don't mess with the radio.
Hello guys !
it's been two days now that i received my Wonder , and i've been noticing lags in 3D games like temple run and gt racing ! and even the app drawer doesn't run smooth for a 1.4 Ghz phone ! So Any ideas guys ?
im curently runing stock 2.3.6 with I8150XXKL3 base band !
thanks in advance !
HEYYYY these are the steps you need to take to make your phone madly fast like mine.
-STOCK LAUNCHER is horrible change it to "Go launcher" or Something else trust me thats very important.
-Go launcher is good if you have the ice cream sandwich theme with it to make your phone look nicer.
-Also dont supercharge script because it makes the phone more unstable.
-No custom Roms, keep stock because is very stable.
-You need to root it.
-Add in clockwork recovery mod
-Flash the xxml8 Kernel for better battery life and 3d games
-You need SetCpu or something like it to force your phone to be always 1.4ghz if you want.
Say 245mhz-768mhz when screen off
Then 245mhz-1400mhz screen on this will make your battery last longer by up to 3+ hours.

Good advice, I'd just like to add a few bits:
-The V6 supercharger script (from RC8+) is very stable and makes the stock ROM and stock launcher fluid, not unstable. Installing a 3rd party launcher will not fix memory management problems in stock ROM and will also lag over time.
-YES root the phone and uninstall all the bloatware apps from Samsung. This will free up memory making the phone faster.
-While I've never used the XXLM8 kernel for gaming, I do know gaming is far superior on Arco's CM9. If you care more about gaming but don't need a working camera urgently consider flashing CM9. In any case as a new user, spend time to flash CWM 5 and make a full backup before flashing any kernel or custom ROM.

Let me help you
Now first of all. Rooting isn't complicated at all, you will be going to google and search: "how to root samsung galaxy w recovery mode", then you'll find a random website with instructions and the links,
1)after you have downloaded the zip file for rooting, put it into internal sd card, turn off phone, boot into recovery mode (volume up+home+power button)
when samsung logo appears, release power button, hold the rest of them, wait until a box and an android comes out, the press "option" button. Screen grays out and wait until recovery menu appears
2) choose install zip from sd card (navigate using volume up and down, home button as confirm/selection) then choose the zip file you have downloaded. Wait until it finishes, then reboot phone, you are rooted.
If you wanna flash a rom without increasing the count in download mode, using clockworkmod recovery, you'll need to go to google again, search how to install clockworkmod 5 on samsung galaxy w, choose a random link with instructions. Follow them, you'll need ODIN downloader and the ops files and the clockworkmod 5 file, they will be included in your download links you find. Follow their instructions, if it stays on setting up connection with phone while flashing cwm 5, close the ODIN, turn off phone, go to download mode again, use another USB port and try flashing cwm again, it happened to me once, and now it works
cwm is for flashing different mod and roms, you need it for everything. But flashing cwm cannot unroot afterwards, you'll not be able to use the unroot zip to unroot as cwm is installed, you will lose your warranty. Think twice before acting.
disclaimer: The above instructions are simply advice, if they cause any damage to your phone, for example brick, or whatever damage, I am not responsible.

if you don't want to flash cm9 because of its camera problem, you can try Rebel Rom 3.0 first, it is very alike with android 4.0, but still gb of course.
But the camera problem in cm9 is somehow repaired, not totally, it is still very broken and buggy, and it's still not good.
BTW, remember to back up your current rom before flashing anything, but you can back up nothing before flashing cwm5, that's why you lose your warranty. You can choose to flash stock rom back afterwards. I have personally not tried this, as this solution has a risk of bricking too...so better not restore stock rom back.
Hey dude. Grats on ur phone
here is what I did to get rid of the lag.
1- root
2- install busybox
3- run v6 supercharger
The phone will be lag free after that even with "touchwiz" launcher. And will remain stable since custom roms while giving great performence, made my phone unstable
Have fun

JB's rom have less ram than ICS and also u need to unlock your bootloader cause only FXP based kernel works with JB
Jb requires a different kernel so you can't install it in locked bootloader.
You can try a jelly sandwich which give the look of jb but not fully jelly bean power.
I think you should wait for jb to be fully stable then unlock the bootloader to feel full taste of jb.

same reason why ICS use more ram than GB, to make everything faster, it use more resource.
Also FXP still have to finish the CM10 so they have to optimize Ram usage.
Supercharger is the thing causing your fc's and terible lag. Get rid of it. Restore to factory do everything you would usually do excluding the supercharger its not needed anymore as the problems like homescreen redraws are now fixed in 587. I was having the exact same problems as you mate its supercharger, no doubts about it. Do a nandroid backup first restore to stock, restore your programs with titanium and test for lag and fc's.
Alternatively before doing a factory reset try unsupercharging then booting into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache partition and see if that sorts it before restoring.

then your os is setup incorrectly the screen redraw problem has been fixed so i reckon its an app on your phone causing it. If your not using stock launcher its most likely your third party launcher, Give me your phone id set it up correctly without supercharger and with nothing fcing ever. My tip is irrelevant if your using a custom rom and a third party launcher as thats the problem custom roms need to be supercharged really as they suck.

I also think i started having lags after supercharger.I was very annoyed by home app redraw so i supercharged it.app redraw problem was gone but RAM seems to be low all the time and my games(even 2D sometime) started lagging. Are you 100% sure .587 has no app redraw problem.I hread 587 has only some minor changes like baseband etc.I am in .431 so i think i will flash .587(as i have O2 version which didn't get ICS )
Also isn't CM10 fully working?Do i have to flash another kernel and unlock bootloader for this.I heard flashing kernel and unlocking bootloader can break phones?

100% mate. Just make sure to use stock launcher yes the folders are a bit boring compared to 3rd party but it’s stable. Also task managers can’t kill my launcher on 587 nor my keyboard nor my systemui. These 3 apps stay open constantly. Also the contacts, dialler and messaging apps now stays active in memory and not exiting like it used to. They all stay up no matter what (first three not the last three). All of the problems I was having after installing ics stopped when I upgraded to 587 the memory management is much better.
Also don't use task managers to kill programs let android manage the ram. Install a program called watchdog and set it to aggressive mode you can then track down what program if any are unstable and then use autolaunches to stop the badly coded program from booting if you cant 100% live without said program.
Good article on this here
http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them
After making allot of configurations to the phone such as installing or uninstalling lots of programs clear the dalvik cache and cache partition with cwm say once a month.
Just do a backup and a simple test upgrade to 587 restore your apps, install some games and test for lag also install advanced task killer and try killing the launcher. The lag in games was the same for me as well with supercharger with exception to all of them crashing during load or 5 minutes after loading. Supercharger cause me so many ****ing headaches and it took me ages to work out what it was.
I agree btw on releases before 587 I was having a lot of problems that 587 sorted. I was really close to buying another phone but 587 sorted my phone out. Also stay away from unlocking the bootloader. You will try lots of different ROMs and come to the conclusion that there all ****e. They all have some bugs or lots of bugs. The only time that would be worth looking at is maybe when jb is released.
I personally unlocked by bootloader and had custom ROMs on it. The phone completely died a couple of months later. I looked after my phone never dropped it ever, It may be related which I personally believe but then again it might not which I doubt. Root the phone, stay on stock and use watchdog to track down badly coded programs. Tracking down the **** programs and getting rid of them will do more for your phones performance that any build.prop tweak you can think of and if you can’t live without the badly coded program you can just use autostarts to stop it auto launching and to only launch when you do it yourself
I also disagree on the minor changes front if it wasn’t for 587 I would be out of pocket by about £700 as I was so close to buying an iphone. 587 definitely sorted the memory management out for me.
For more ram I used swapper, only works on 587,no more lag...I played asphalt 7 and wild blood very smooth, just use the last andreno software...

I'm having a strange problem with my Xperia Arc (4.0.4) that is proving very difficult to track down. When playing music or videos, after a random amount of time (maybe 20 or 30 seconds) the phone will crash and restart. This happens regardless of the app I use - Play Music, Poweramp, MX Player and YouTube. I have restored my phone using CWM to a much earlier backup, but eventually (within a few hours) the problem returns.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Unless anyone has any ideas, my only other recourse would seem to be a full wipe and return to stock firmware, which would be a major PITA and obviously wouldn't help if this is a hardware issue or some conflict with an update :crying:
Several reasons.
Could be a bug in your custom ROM. Check your ROM thread for updates, also read FAQ of it to see if any solution given.
Check kernel thread for for more stable updates.
If you are overclocking, it is a possible reason for instabilities.
If nothing works, instead of reverting to backup, make a fresh install of your ROM latest updates.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a bug in the rom (at least, noone else has reported it, and I've been using it for a long time without any issues). It shouldn't be the kernel as I'm on stock (locked bootloader). I'm not OC'd when this happens.
I made general assumptions based on the info in your signature. Unfortunately i cannot really help further. Im still new at this. Also i am Xperia Pro user not Arc S.

Btw mate, JJs Hybrid is discontinued and kinda old and youre not even using the latest release (12 aug 2012). Maybe its time for you to move on something up-to-date?
My father is complaining a lot lately that the phone is even slower than usual and that apps are not installing. I checked it out myself and while I find stock ICS on these devices literally unusable even after a fresh install, this time it's worse than anything I've ever seen, apps take several seconds to open and the phone chugs along at a snail's pace. On top of that, I can't install **** even though I have over 100Mb free internal memory, yet the Play Store keeps complaining about not enough storage available.
I have no idea how the phone became this slow, like I said before, ICS is a clunky sluggish mess on 2011 xperias, but now it's even worse, and my father other than the stock apps only installed Whatsapp.
So yeah, how do I make this piece of crap usable and how do you fix the storage issue? Google gives me a billion different solutions and not a single one works.
Phone is rooted on stock ICS latest, model is ARC S.
Formatting the phone is not a solution, so I can't install another rom (unless you can keep the data partition).

Go back to GB. In the end, this phone was made to run smootly on GB, not on ICS.
Stock ICS is just a huge fail. Custom ROMs make it a little better, but GB works the best.
EDIT: Just a note, for Play Store issue, try clearing data for the Play Store app.

You can try flashing a new ROM without wiping Data...
Nevertheless, IMO, the best solution is to save all the data on the SD Card and reflash the stock Arc S TFT through FlashTool. This will normally solve lots of bugs.
Hope I helped.
Cheers.

Stock ICS sucks on arc, custom ROM is a little better than stock but still it's pretty slow.I recommended you to use the ROM that i use it's custom, everything works perfect and it's fast. It's based on GB.Gin2KitKat 3.0.0 the ROM is themed to look like kitkat but it's GB and it runs perfectly on this phone, that ROM you can install without wiping data, just follow the steps(Gin2KitKat is the ROM that that works for me,there are different people's with different need's but this is the ROM i always come back to).But almost every ROM you can flash without wiping data, but ROM's works better when the phone is clean. But just in case make a nandroid backup with CWM and backup data with an app,if you can't install from market google for it...I think titanium backup would be perfect for this job i think the free version can do the job.Good luck!

Thanks guys, I think I'll just flash an GB based rom. He wanted to avoid having to reset the phone (even with the backup it takes some time to restore everything as it was before) but there doesn't seem to be any other solution. I remember that when I had the Xperia Ray I used a rom that was the same as Gingerbread on Xperia S and had no bugs whatsoever, is there something similar for Arc? And can I flash Arc roms on the Arc S no problem?

Most (if not all) ROMs are built for Arc and Arc S both, they will work on both as well.
There are some GB ROMs available, most known now is probably Gin2KitKat (using it myself), but look in the Development section to find more.
