I'm having a strange problem with my Xperia Arc (4.0.4) that is proving very difficult to track down. When playing music or videos, after a random amount of time (maybe 20 or 30 seconds) the phone will crash and restart. This happens regardless of the app I use - Play Music, Poweramp, MX Player and YouTube. I have restored my phone using CWM to a much earlier backup, but eventually (within a few hours) the problem returns.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Unless anyone has any ideas, my only other recourse would seem to be a full wipe and return to stock firmware, which would be a major PITA and obviously wouldn't help if this is a hardware issue or some conflict with an update :crying:
Several reasons.
Could be a bug in your custom ROM. Check your ROM thread for updates, also read FAQ of it to see if any solution given.
Check kernel thread for for more stable updates.
If you are overclocking, it is a possible reason for instabilities.
If nothing works, instead of reverting to backup, make a fresh install of your ROM latest updates.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a bug in the rom (at least, noone else has reported it, and I've been using it for a long time without any issues). It shouldn't be the kernel as I'm on stock (locked bootloader). I'm not OC'd when this happens.
I made general assumptions based on the info in your signature. Unfortunately i cannot really help further. Im still new at this. Also i am Xperia Pro user not Arc S.

Sorry about double posting, but I am getting desperate (posted on Q&A).
Can't find an answer to this on google or xda. Didn't know if I should post this in General or Q&A.
I have been using my Incredible since it came out. I quickly learned about rooting, roms, s-off... with no problems. I have been running Skyraider almost from the beginning.
Here is the problem: A few days ago, I noticed on the SR thread that there were updates for the radio and hboot. So, I went ahead and flashed them. Almost immediately I started noticing the screen becoming unresponsive. After a minute or two I did a battery pull, rebooted, and again after a little while, freeze and reboot. I also noticed that even when the phone is awake but screen off, it would wake itself up. The rebooting and freezing makes it impossible to use my phone.
I tried everything I could think of:
Nandroid restore (obviously didn't work since this doesn't effect hboot or radio).
Reinstalled fresh SR Rom wiping everything, including dalvik, and did factory reset.
Finally, I downgraded back to the hboot and radio versions I had before, still no effect. (Baseband version 2.15.00.07.28, hboot .79 ).
I tried installing another ROM (Uncommon sense) to make sure it wasn't a ROM issue, ..same problem.
Please, any help would be much appreciated. I don't know what my next step should be.
PS, I am not overclocking, just using stock kernel.

try downgrading to completely stock 2.1 then see if it keeps doing it...otherwise I'd say that maybe you did something wrong installing a file and it's bricked...that's what it sounds like anyways

Today it's running a bit better. I'll keep testing it, if it continues to crash, I will take your suggestion and go back to 2.1 and start over.
Just a thought: are you restoring your stuff via Titanium? If so, you may be restoring a bad / incompatible system instruction. You might try this: Do a master reset and restore your important apps (not data) one at a time to check performance. Install data later (also individually) as needed.
HTH!

The Release Candidate versions have been around for a while, and they've been running on the Desire Z too.
Sorry I don't understand your request, but I recommend you check out the linked posting, i.e. the "proper" thread on the G2 forums.
Will check there. I just wondered about how to install that special patch of brokenworm.
Tried now to install the first part of CM6.1, but already failed at the nandroid backup. I installed ROM Manager, then installed there the Clockwork Recovery and rebooted into yet. But there I failed, it doesn't seem to be available in the recovery part
I also had only the choice between HTC G2 for ClockworkMod Recovery.
Ok found the issue, was missing S-OFF. Fixed it with this guide, section b) :

That's a problem with Clockwork Recovery at the moment, it's not a problem with the ROM. So it will happen with any ROM when you have Clockwork installed (it happens to me, and I have the stock ROM with Clockwork). Hopefully the developer will fix it soon.

You need to root and s-off. A good back up program would be your gmail account .
After a days use:
GPS seems to be working amazingly fast on this version
Battery life is also looking good. 77% after 8 hours,
60% after 12 hours. Lots of texts, few phone calls, 30mins internet use, few hours of listening to MP3's...seems to use no power at all in standby as well
Currently using SetCPU with standard kernel, on-demand governor:
Min: 245 Mhz
Max: 1.1GHz
Not using a profile like 245/245 when screen off which also seems to improve battery life as mentioned in other threads.
Signal strength has been much more stable (used to get a frequent drops/low signal/missed sms etc)
Thanks! Officially a die hard cm fan
Woot woot. So far, other than the standard Cyanogen features, I've noted the phone is substantially smoother than the stock HTC Sense (and even Villision's modified G2 ROM), the battery life is ostensibly through the roof (maybe it's not updating properly, but it's been idle for a few hours now and I've literally not lost a single percent of battery life :|), and in general it just feels much nicer.
That said, my SD card refuses to work, *sigh*.
UPDATE - my battery life just dropped to 99%. After 3 hours off the charger, with wifi and automatic updates on. Crazy.
Just a small question from a newbie
I want to try this cyanogen on my DZ but first... :
- Actually my phone is S-off + root + o/c kernel @ 1.4Ghz... I will do a nAndroid backup before flashing with Cyanogen, but after if for some reason I'm not happy with Cyanogen and a made a nAndroid restore... Will it restore also s-off / root and 1.4Ghz kernel on my stock rom ?
- Flashing with Cyanogen does erase any data on the SDcard ?
- Can I apply the 1.4Ghz kernel of this thread on the cyanogenmod ?
Thanks for your help

If you restore from nand phone will be as you left it. flashing wont wipe your sd card & cyanogenmod comes with overclockable kernel as standard...just use setCPU
hope this helps.

I recommend you guys use the CM thread over in the G2 forum, there are a ton more people in that thread who you can share experiences with and ask for advice etc.
Agreed. I come from a Nexus One (amongst others), so anyone can ask me questions via PM or here if they need to. I'm also in the g2 section, as it's a TON busier than over here, lol. You'll find most information you need with just about everything over there.
first time trying cyanogen... kina traumatized with flashing coz i migrated from using a galaxy s...
but this rom is GREAT! super smooth, and super snappy. i'll be doing a test run with the batt tomorrow. i can usually get it to last 16 hours with a fair amount of browsing, 2-3 hours use with bluetooth stereo, and a average calls and sms. so i'm hoping this rom can squeeze out more batt life.
I've got MIUI ROM 1.6.10 installed on my HTC Desire and I really like it, but I've got a big issue with the camera: it's in a constant state of being frozen.
So to clarify, I open the camera app, and it's straight away frozen. I try to press buttons but all I get is the Force Close / Wait dialogue. If I wait, nothing happens. If I force close and open it again, it's frozen still/again.
It used to happen to me in MIUI 1.2 as well and when I upgraded to MIUI 1.4 after a wipe, surprisingly it was exactly the same, but then I tried pressing the Clear Data button for the Camera application and it started working again.
A little bit after it started getting frozen again. Clear data didn't work anymore, neither did a wipe, SD card format and upgrading to 1.6.10, as mentioned above.
The only thing I can think about the might cause the problem is this: before miui I used to have cyanogen ROM. When I look at phone information it says I've got the cyanogen kernel. is that something that could cause problems to the miui ROM? Should install a different kernel?
Can anyone please help? I really like this ROM and I don't want to have to start getting used to something else!
Thanks for reading!
I'm not sure if this is useful/helpful at all but i gather that since it says that you've got cm kernel you didn't perform a full wipe when you installed miui... try doing a full wipe and reinstalling it...
Save important user data and apps, perform a full wipe and flash again.
Does a full wipe erase the previous kernel?
What kernel will I have then?
Can anyone actually explain what kernel is exactly?
Also, how do I do a FULL wipe?
Because I've already done:
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe dalvik cache
What am I missing?
Cheers
After a full wipe you won't be able to start any rom.
You will get the kernel which is delivered with the rom you flash.
An explanation for the kernel:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel
Nothing is missing for a full wipe.
Search the miui thread for your problem.

Could I still have missed something from a full wipe? I remember reading in the guide that u need to format /data,or something. But I assumed the wipes I've detailed above were sufficient. Can anyone confirm that for me?
Or can anyone tell me otherwise why I'm having this problem?
Thanks.

DIDN'T WORK!
It's a shame. I really thought that was the solution, but it didn't work.
I've just downloaded and installed the recommended radio (5.17.5.23), even tried to clear the camera's data again, but it's still frozen.

No. Do you reckon that might help? Which one would u recommend?
Okay I've tried a different radio, different kernels (Tiamat 3.3.8 and 4.0.5). Nothing helps!
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this annoying problem?
Another lead I had in mind: Could the fact that I have S-ON affect anything?
Update: I've tried pressing "Fix Permissions" in ROM Manager which didn't help either.
................?
The MIUI camera seems to be a bit buggy, I had to update the radio which helped me get rid of the worst crashes (suprise reboots) but it's still FC'ing and crashing the camera totally so that a reboot is necessary.
Try installing Camera360 from Market. It works for me, and at least you will know if it's just the MIUI Camera app that's broken or if you have bigger problems. In case Camera360 can't connect to the camera, reboot and try again.

I've already tried a different camera from the market and it does work with no problems at all.
It is the miui camera app that's malfunctioning.
If no one has a solution, all that's left for me is to hope the miui devs will fix this critical issue for their next build.

Ah, then it's most probably the same problem that I have, only I get to shoot a few pics before it goes bye bye and then no camera app at all works until I reboot.
It's a shame because I really like the MIUI Camera, but I guess we'll just have to wait for a fix. If you have error logs, try posting them in the official forum for your MIUI build and maybe they can get someone in China working on a solution?
same problem for me but i am on 1.9.16 ported to X10 lol...
I seen somewhere that it was the auto focus that caused problems/ lags for ppl so if i could just get it to work once and maybe turn that off?
Hi all,
I followed this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895) for returning to stock 4.0.4. All went good, but now my camera and youtube app don't work.
I also installed JB through OTA, but the problem still here.
Now I've followed all the step again, but I have the same problem yet. :/
I read around that it can be related to a wrong build.prop, but my system now is a virgin YAKJU, nothing modified..
What can be the problem? It's an hardware fault??
edit: noone of the camera applications in market work :/
thank you for your help

Are you installing apps first? are you sure your doing full factory image for your hardware? another thing I'd try is booting into clockwork without installing it, from boot loader and formatting /system. Then do factory image.
I have a similar problem, where my camera and the google talk app (for some reason) won't work. I posted about this about a week ago, but received no useful responses, which probably means this is an extremely rare problem. Superwipe didn't work for me, so if you haven't done so yet, save yourself some time. I haven't time reverting the phone to stock, and that's about all I haven't tried.

I tried almost everything: all kind of wipe (also superwipe), format, CWM (also last one, 6.0.0.5), TWRP, stock yakju from google dev, stock upgrade to JB, some JB rom.. nothing.
Now I'm convinced that is an hardware problem, it happened after a flash (to stock rom), but I think is a coincidence.
GTalk works for me.
Camera doesn't work, it goes in timeout.
Same thing with youtube (app starts, but when I select a video, it doesn't start, maybe youtube launch an intent for check camera availability, or something like).
Also other camera application from market don't work, and so application which use the camera light.
Another strange thing is that some times, when I turn on the phone, it doesn't start on first boot, but it restart once or twice and then boot.
If someone has a good advice, I'm happy to hear.
thank you again :/

Hello,
I've read through the Everything thread on Development, as well as searched using the xda search and google site search, but come up with nothing.
The Everything thread mentions that the current version of CWRM won't charge when the phone is off or in recovery, but I can't find anything about which version is the 'latest' (6.0.1.2, 5.0.2.7), nor if this also affects the TWRP recoveries (2.6.3, 2.4.1)? For that matter, I can't find anything that even mentions the charging problems at all aside from the Everything thread!
If there is a charging problem with all of the third party ROMs, is there a method to go back to the stock recovery after flashing in a ROM and backing up /efs/? I'm basically shooting for a fully functional phone and I don't plan on changing ROMs all over the place, just root and ICS.
Help?
Thanks!

I think something like 6.0.4 the latest CWMR. ( you can build with http://builder.clockworkmod.com/ , Existing Device option doesnt work)
It charges in latest TWRP, you can see "+" char when on charge next to the battery level.
Stock uses recovery for official upgrade, and factory reset. We have only offline charge issue, but recovery has no effect on it. Offline charger works with a limitation. I wouldnt bother you with the explanation, since you said you would like to use stock ICS.
You can backup efs in rooted rom without recovery. You can always flash recovery with odin phone in download mode.
Thanks.
I guess I had assumed the comment was referring to the builds in the Development forum, not the overall CWMR project! Is there a currently recommended recovery, or is it a toss up to personal preference? I'm not so much tied to ICS as tied to a completely working ROM - especially as I see all the bluetooth and skype issues with the JB ROMs, which (as far as I can tell) are still unresolved / unknown?

I make TWRP for i927, we dont have other up to date, but you can build yourself.
Dont you have issue with stock ICS? I made up to date issue list in me CM 10.2, you could decide it suit for you or not, you may know stock limitation already.
I hope voip issue would be resolved soon.

My only real requirement in a phone is that it be reliable - I don't want to have to pop out batteries or have no audio on calls if I get stranded in the middle of nowhere. At this point, my phone is still in the mail - got a used one from a friend, but it hasn't arrived, so I haven't had much ability to experiment yet.
My Android experience is exclusively with a Transformer TF101, which had 4.0.4 ICS stock and is currently running Katkiss JB 4.2.2_226 (Katkiss 4.3 isn't stable enough for me yet, was getting daily crashes last time I tried). All of the phone components are new to me - and the Glide seems to have a more fragmented recovery scene than the TF101, which is pretty much TWRP or nothin'
Thanks again for your help!
