Rostore and backup? - HTC One X

I have a few questions so be kind and help.
1.Im on stock kernel 2.6.3.9.4.
I want to now if that kernel is the latest stock kernel and is there a thread here where i can look if any new ones come out for europe. Because i couldnt find any.
2.Im on viper rom.
I have a nandriod backup of this rom and my stock rom.
I want to know can go back via rom manager or recovery to my stock rom to see if the stock rom got any new updates?
a)if yes, some say if i install this new update i will have to unlock my bootloader again?
b)does the new update also contain a new kernel or did it remain the same?
3.After im finished with the above problems can i go back to viper via restore or do i need to flash the boot.img first and then do a restore?

I have another question on the same topic (rather nooby question ^^)
If you restore a backup from CWM, will you have all the apps and launcher settings and in-app settings/content the way it was by then? Or is it just like going back to factory reset (the os is back to normal and the apps and setting are all lost)....?
Many thanks in advance, and in case you have solution to achieve the goal set in my first question, please share!!

1. That is the latest kernel you have there. There is a custom kernel from kholk which is 3.4. There is no real place to look for the update. You will immediately know when the new kernel arrives. The news will be all over the hox thread.
2. You can go back via recovery, but you'll need to install that boot.img in the backup folder first via fastboot. You'll first need to clear cache before flashing boot.img and then you can recover via recovery. It is in the backup and restore option in cwm.
2a) if there is a update, you won't need to worry about unlocking the bootloader again.
b) Might contain new kernel, depends on which update you were last. Probably not new kernel totally, but rather a few improvements.
Yes you can go back again. Just do the same procedure you did with number 1.

You will have everything like it was when you backed up. Not sure if you'll get you're messages back or not. Settings and everything should be in together with the backup.

It should be in your backup folder. Look under clockwork on you're SD card and then look at your first(earliest) backup date. Open that folder, there should be a zip file and in the zip should be a boot.img file.

[Q] Need help with CM7

So im planning to go back to 2.1 or 2.2 and sense, so how im going to do this? ( I have #203 Nightly)
After that, will i need to root again, and is it possible to overclock stock wildfire ROM and how? (Install new kernel??)
If youre asking why go back to sense, I just happen to need stableness for next 4 weeks and want to see how much I can tweak Sense. Going back to cm7 in november probably
Mipe
Just install like a new ROM. One such stock rooted Froyo can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877977
The only different thing is that this will have to be flashed in Clockworkmod 2.x. (I guess you must know how to flash Radio's in CM7, so its not a big issue)
And yes, to OC, you will have to install a custom kernel like this one:

I also found that i have cwm backup from original rom that I can restore. Does this also restore previous radio or kernel or do I have to do it manually?
it will not touch the radio, but it will restore the stock kernel. (Or whichever kernel you had installed when you took that backup)

I got a problem. I want to get original Sense by restoring backup from CWM. Mine works, but has a pattern that i dont remember and a email wich i dont remember either. Does anyone happen to have a backup of a wildfire without password or could someone advice something else? I tried RUU but my win7 x64 is causing trouble, or the drivers.
Just flash the stock froyo ROM I listed in the first post I made in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877977). If you don't know how to get Clockworkmod 2.5.0.x, then:
- Download this attachment, place on your SDCard:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=662193&d=1311319218
- Flash the zip (update1.zip) using your existing Clockworkmod 5.0.2.0
- Device will reboot and will start Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7
- Perform Data Wipe and Choose Install Zip from SDCard, select the ROM Zip file, and let it install.

Just what is says. It does not include the Bootloader (HBoot), and it does not include the baseband (Radio). So, for these two components, what you are having on your device at this moment will remain. (ie - They will not be updated when you flash the ROM)

Just picked up the One X, about to install ARHD

Hi guys,
I just picked up the One X international version and am loving every moment. So far, I've unlocked the bootloader from htcdev.com, installed the Clockwork mod recovery, made a backup, and installed SuperSU (in that order).
While waiting for the next version of ARHD to be released, I've got a few questions hopefully someone can help to answer
1) The directions say to manually flash the corresponding boot.img manually before flashing the ROM. Does this mean I do the reboot into fastboot and use the command prompt to type "fastboot boot boot.img"?
2) In the future when there are new versions of ARHD released, or I want to try a different ROM, do I just flash the new ROM over the existing one and that's it? Will all my settings and contacts still be intact on the phone or will it be erased? If it will be erased is there any way to back up just those info so I can restore on the updated ROM?
3) If/when I decide to sell the phone, is there a step by step guide somewhere I can follow to restore the phone back to factory conditions? I assume the backup I made of the phone after I installed Clockwork mod recovery will still be unlocked and have Clockwork installed?
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions Can't wait to get started with the ROMs!

Yup that sounds about right to me.

Will all my settings and contacts still be intact on the phone or will it be erased? If it will be erased is there any way to back up just those info so I can restore on the updated ROM?
If coming from ARHD I think you can just flash the new ROM directly onto the phone and you wont or shouldn't loose any data.
In the 'How to Flash' section of the ARHD Thread it reads:
Download "Super Wipe" script & place it on your SD card (optionally if coming from earlier version of my ROM, obligatory if coming from stock or other custom ROM) So basically, the Superwipe script wipes the whole phone, you do this when first flashing a ROM onto your phone, when flashing a newer version onto the phone it isn't necessary to perform a Superwipe.
3) If/when I decide to sell the phone, is there a step by step guide somewhere I can follow to restore the phone back to factory conditions? I assume the backup I made of the phone after I installed Clockwork mod recovery will still be unlocked and have Clockwork installed?
There are guides somewhere, I'll look for them and PM you a link if I can find it, however a lot of people sell their phones rooted and with custom roms on nowadays. Only re-locking them if they're trying to gain back some warranty.

Awesome, thanks for the reply and links! I have one last question hopefully someone can confirm... I assume once I flash to any custom ROM whenever there is a software update on the phone I should NOT update? Is it safe to update the apps through the Google Play store such as Facebook GMail etc?
Well with venom Rom for hox u can update it is actually the only rom that has over the air updates directly by the people that made the rom also most customizable Rom too.

It's safe to update any Apps and things through the Play Store yeah, On a lot of ROMs the OTA Updater is disabled, you'll have to flash the latest RUU onto the phone to get the Update.
E.G We had an ARHD ROM that was running off the 1.29.401.11 update, now we've got a version of ARHD that's running off 2.05.401.2 instead as Mike had updated the ROM to include the latest updates, so everytime there is a new update, the ROMs get updated by the Devs and we can reflash on said ROM.

You may safly update anything from Market (Play). You may backup your phonebook in Google account and through settings in phone book (Export to SD or somthing like this). SMS you may backup also to SD card or to email (there is an option in it). Or try ROMcleaner 2.1 it will backup some settings also and user apps.
And when Mike (ARHD developer) release new ROM, if it is based on NEW official update (RUU) with new sw version it is highly recomended to do a full wipe(Super Wipe script is in his thread). It will erase every app and configuration, except you SD card files.
The correct command is fastboot flash boot boot.img, not fastboot boot boot.img

Please help. Think I have bricked it!

So, I was relocking my HOX in order to get the OTA JB update from carrier (H3G) in order to use the new Viper ROM.
All went well and managed this. Got re rotted and installed CWM ans Super SU.
However, I read that before installing the JB Viper ROM it was important to do a full wipe. Using CWM i did this. Specifically I did the wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and format system.
Now my phone is stuck on the white HTC screen. Please help.
Thanks
You formatted system, which basically wiped the rom. Reflash and don't format system.

Thanks for the quick response and apologies for the basic and wrongly termed questions. Just panicking a little.
How do i get the ROM and boot.img on to the fone? Because it sticks at the white screen the pc doesn't seem to detect it.
Last time i used a stock RUU and followed that process. Will i be able to flash the new Viper ROM instead?
thanks
The boot.img is supposed to be flashed from the PC. To get the Rom into the phone you need to go back to clockworkmod, go into mounts and storage and press the mount usb thing
Edit - to flash the boot.img find a thread about fastboot. Don't worry you'll get there
To get the ROM on the phone boot into cwm and GOTO mounts & storage
Then mount USB storage
It should now be detected as a drive on your PC and you can copy the ROM back over

So have a ROM now but I have no service with my carrier and when I try to connect to wifi it says 'error'. Have I missed or done something wrong?

Got it resolved. I had used the tweaked kernel and assumed that this was not standard, so when asked about which kernel i was using i said it wasn't the viper one.
So i went back to basics and used the kernel that came with the ROM zip and just flashed both. Working fine now. The only question is whether I could have used the tweaked kernel and answered yes to using the viper version?
Thanks for your help. Felt like I have learned a fair bit in the last 12 hours though!
Well if you flashed a different custom kernel you can answer that with the question so it won't load the stock modules but backs up the custom modules from the custom kernel. This way it won't mess up functionality.
When you use a boot.img without it proper modules it can mess up those things you experienced. Hope i make my self clear

[Q] Need some direction with Restoring

Hi All,
Yesterday I took my Tegra 3 (International) One X back to Stock ICS using RUU. Everything went smoothly after I relocked my bootloader and ran the RUU.
Then I proceeded to get all the OTA updates until I had JellyBean (3.14.707.24) with no further updates pending. Yay for Jellybean! The next thing I did was install CWM recovery and perform a nandroid backup (which didn't seem to restore later, although was created correctly).
At this point, I thought I would try using a CM10 rom to remove sense and I went ahead and installed it, flashing over the boot.img as one normally would, but it wouldn't boot. I later discovered that I needed a modded-boot.img (for new hboot 1.36), but not before I tried running the 3.14.707.24 RUU.
This RUU got stuck at sending.... and did not finish. I didn't leave it more than 20 minutes and tried twice. I also tried my ICS RUU to no avail.
Right now I have no Rom installed (from what I can tell), but I have full fastboot access and would like to know how I should proceed:
1) should I install the CM10 rom again with proper modded-boot.img (for hboot 1.36) and see if it boots? That would at least get me functional.
2) should I try another copy of the RUU for 3.14.707.24 JB? (i found one)
3) should I try a rom like Android Revolution HD which is OK to work with my new HBoot 1.36?
I don't want to do too much too fast since I know what I've done, and used to be really into this. The phone has been sitting a while since I upgraded my device and I'd like to get it working for travelling purposes. I'd be happy with a Stock Rom at this point...
Thanks for any willingness to help me
Adam
Ofcourse if you want CM flash the boot.img that is made for CM..And then flash .zip file..And ofcourse after flashing use
"fastboot erase cache"
Sometimes if you dont clear cache your phone won't boot..

As you already said the old boot.img wont work with the new hboot. Just install cm10.1 as usually. Or any other JB Rom that is out there for the One X.

I'll try this later when I have the time. Thanks to everyone who responded. I was nervous I was on the bad road. Seems I'm in healthy shape, just lacking a rom.
Two more questions:
1) Can I still revert to stock? If so, how since RUU seems to get stuck at sending and not actually restore?
2) Any idea why when I tried to restore my stock nandroid backup just after installing CWM (which backed up successfully) it would restore but not boot (hung on One splash screen)? Should I have to wait a seriously long time for it to boot (I never used to have to?)
Thanks in advance!

2. I did not use the boot.img from the nandroid backup. I've never sent a separate boot.img when restoring from Nandroid. Is that something I need to do going forward/have been lucky not having to do until now? Perhaps the ICS builds of roms had a more similar boot.img?

I would like to have someone who can guide me slowly step by step carefuly to whatever better option there is.
I been having lots of troubleshooting with phone not responding how it should and I have to keep rebooting to often.
I appreciate your help.
Thank you
Since you're running a custom rom, you could update your recovery to the latest CWM or TWRP and flash a different or updated rom.
Could you help me to do that?
Just guide me step by step.
Ok I already did a backup.
What custom recovery are you running? The first thing would be to get the latest img for your custom recovery and install it.
How did you root and install a custom recovery on your phone?
I am running AOKP OTA Ver. 3.2
That time I did it following a step by step guide with someone who was guiding me.
Hmm what else would you like to know?

Oh…sure sure.
One I use is Team Win Recovery Project v2.4.1.0
You should update to the latest TWRP from here: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/104
You can flash it using Odin. Make a full backup using the new TWRP. Find a rom you want to try, save it to the phone, and flash it using the ypdated TWRP. Don't forget to wipe the phone before changing ROMs.

Ok So I delete the older TWRP get the new one.
Then back and wipe which of all the options?
And of course if I was using AOKP which I really liked, what will your recommend me?
Installing the latest version of TWRP will overwrite the version on your phone.
Install the newest version of TWRP, create a backup of your rom using the new version of TWRP, find a rom you like, copy the ROM to your phone, boot into TWRP, wipe cache, dalvik, data, flash the ROM, reboot.

Ok next is to find a nice rom, Any suggestions? (S3rx or SlimBean) keep in mind my device is an i747
Also do I use my computer to download the rom or should I use my phone directly?
I decided to go with Hyperdrive RLS16
Currently downloading it.
Will be flashing soon.

You can download it directly to your computer and use Windows Explorer to copy it to a microSD card or directly to your phone. It's probably quicker to download a few to your computer and transfer them all at once so you can try different ones.
Have fun flashing ROMs.

Ok as I extract the rom to my external sd card of my phone it's asking me many permissions such as:
"Do you want to copy Cesium.ogg to your device?
Your device might not be able play or view this file."
I said yes to skip all of the next warnings because every time i hit yes comes another warning.
Also strangely the rom took forever to download and the extraction is also taking way to long.
I didn't had to go through so much stuff by that time I downloaded AOKP rom. :/
Still extracting as I update this post... Something is not right...
I will have to cancel this.
It's stuck.
Do not extract the files. Just flash the zip.

Ah, to late I'm currently trying to find the right download link for Slim Bean rom.
Mind if you help me here?
My device is an I747.
UPDATE:
I believe is this one?
http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/d...o/6801-slim-d2att-4-3-build-2-2-official-1738
UPDATE!!
Yup it's done.
Thank you very much for your patience.
Quick question.
How do I restore all my phone data such as my contacts numbers and messages from the back up I did with the other rom?
Do I just restore the last backup and it should recognize the new rom?
UPDATE!
So it went back to where it was of course.
How should I back it all up and restore in the new rom?
Looks right. I have an i747m, not the i747.
