Broken powerbutton, need to unroot and re-lock - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey all,
My power button stopped working and I, thinking it was a software issue, pulled the battery and found out I could not restart. I need to get into recovery or at least turn on the phone to unroot and relock it before heading to verizon.
So far I have had no luck turning the phone back on. I'm sure there is a way to do this... any help is greatly appreciated.

You can use a jig to go into the download mode
And flash a rom
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Is the jig the only option? I don't currently have a jig so if that's the only thing I can do I will need to order one ASAP so I can get this thing working.

Are you talking about in command prompt? I tried
Code:
adb-windows.exe devices
which returns " list of devices attached" with none listed.

If you can't get it to turn on they won't be able to either it will probably be fine.

The issue is that the phone is in no way broken other than the power button. I'll have to take it in and hope for the best if I can't figure something out, but I'd really like the peace of mind knowing that all of my files and data aren't stuck on it (I'd also like to get my lastest nandroid or do another one).
I saw a timing trick on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731128 that is supposed to allow the device to boot, but I haven't gotten it to work yet.

Google wugfresh nexus root toolkit
It has a simple one click fix for flashing stock and unrooting when the device can't boot up

Or you can use something like glados cp to relock the boot loader as your rooted then delete the superuser apk in system app

I've gotten the phone into download mode using a jig, but it still doesn't seem to be recognized by the computer. Is this an issue of re-installing the Samsung drivers/adb or a limitation of download mode? Do I need to use odin?

Are you sure you have ADB configured properly for the device to be picked up via command line? USB debugging would have to of been turned on for ADB commands..

I'm almost positive USB debugging is on, especially since I think it's a default option in kang. I can get into download mode but not anything else. At this point I think I'm going to have to use ODIN and lose my data. Stupid power button...

Try removing the battery then tapping the metal battery pins against the phone pins repeatedly.
A friend of mine used to have to do this to get his nexus one to boot.. it can be a bit temperamental but does work.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed. From download mode you will have to use Odin.
Note: since the device won't actually boot into Android, you don't have to worry about USB Debugging.
Note x2: the only driver that would let my device be recognized was the PDA Net driver, you may want to give it a try.

Well guys, thanks for all the suggestions. In the end I could get nothing to work other than Download mode with a jig and Odin to restore to stock. I lost everything on the phone, including my nandroid backups (should have copied them over more recently ...), but was able to re-lock the bootloader with nexus root toolkit after using Odin to flash the stock rom. ]
Moral of the story, if you lose your power button, you are screwed.

Unfortunately you can't use adb to turn on a powered off device; not saying that wouldn't be awesome.

Root Gingerbread w/o download mode???

So the other day my phone pretty much got submerged in water, luckily I let it dry out completly in a vacuum chamber and it still pretty much works except for a few keyboard keys, the volume up key, and MOST ANNOYINGLY the power button. Meaning that I can't turn on my phone once it's off, I've gotten lucky in being able to turn it on by plugging in and out the usb cable, but other than that I've been making sure that it dosen't run out of battery (n I've been wakign up the phone by slidingthe keyboard out)...
I've been reading around and it seems that I might be able to remap the power button to the camera key using buttonremapper or something like that, unfortunately the phone has to be rooted and after reading up on that it seems that a one click root would work since I'd never need the power button, however for gingerbread FC09 I can only find a way to root using odin, which apparently requires download mode, which I can't access since the power button dosen't work
so my question is does anyone know of a way to root gingerbread FC09 without the need of a power button, either something similar to one click roots or odin without accessing download mode??
Thanks, any help is much appreciated
There was another thread. Where they was saying you can type in reboot download. In the terminal emulator to get into dl mode. Also if you have the tools. Take it apart clean the board with rubbing alcohol and a tooth brush. It could fix. All your keys. Just make sure you let the alcohol dry up before putting it back together. I restored an e4gt with that method. Hope this helps. I know that wasn't the answer to your question but its an alternative.

You need root access to do it with the terminal emulator........ so that's a no go... really if you are on gingerbread with no way into download mode, I really think you are stuck... there is no other way that I can think of other than maybe a jig to jump you into download mode.............

I had heard of that but didn't try it yet since I couldn't find any clear article on how to root just using that method...
I'll download the drivers and program and try it when I can, but I'm pretty sure I can access adb as it's android's development tool and only requires usb debugging to be on, and everything so far has worked as long as it dosen't require the power button...how would I root using adb?
@notsosmrtgeek: thanks for the advice, however I already did that the first time after it got wet and before drying it out...I think it was inevitable that some of the microcircuitry got messed up...weird is volume up dosen't work, but if I say anything into the phone (voice search) then it raises the volume up to the max level, lol

so I did adb reboot download, and now when I boot up it always goes to the standard android system recovery 3e, I can scroll the options but it dosen't let me select any option, i tried the home key and my power button dosen't work...and so the only thing I can do is pull out the battery and try again, but of course the same thing happens...
I decided to get the dongle to force download mode, and maybe and try rebooting the phone through odin or flashing a stock rom (even though it has stock but just to get the phone to reboot properly) and I can get to download mode and odin does recognize it, but it always says write FAIL after boot.bin, i tried different usb cords/ports, reinstalling drivers, flashing different roms in case the file was corrupt, but no luck always fail
also since odin recognizes the device, i though maybe i could do adb reboot, but unfortunately the android debug bridge dosen't recognize my phone
does anyone have any suggestions or should I just give up, and settle that this phone is bricked...

[Q] lost root and and bootloader shuts down

I have a Verizon GN. My phone had root on it and for some reason now I don't. Super user says my SU binary cannot be found and ROM manager says an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands. I tried flashing a different custom ROM so I shut the phone off and attempted to boot into the boot loader and go into recovery from there. Once the boot loader comes up the phone shuts rite off. Is there a way I can get into recovery other than fastboot, ROM manager or terminal emulator? The phone also shuts off as soon as I plug it in via USB.

If you can't get into fastboot to flash back to stock (or re-flash) a custom recovery, I would guess the next step would be flashing back to a stock image via odin. I've never had to use it (knockonwood) but I found this in the Verizon Dev forum

Try ... a different USB cable, a different USB port, and if possible a different PC.
how can a device shut down when plugged in to usb?
perhaps OP has fastcharge on? does the wallcharger charge ok? maybe battery? I'd try battery. If it shuts down when you hook it up to usb, and with the wall charger, then I'd definately would go for the battery or the power source itself. do you have any UV set?
oh, maybe even a short on the usb pins with your pc's usb ports. even worse would be your nexus usb port just died.

I will definitely have to try a new battery. I have tried several USB cords. And different computers. And I always get the same results. The phone also shuts down on its own when its on sleep mode. Which is really annoying cuz I have to turn the phone back on every time the screen goes off.

Is there a way to gain temporary root access? I tried using z4root but it keeps force closing on me. Also I just went out and purchased a brand new extended battery and I still get the same results . It can't be my USB port either cuz it only turns of when plugged in to a PC but when plugged in to a wall charger its fine . I'm thinking its the kernel?

[Q] [Cry] Galaxy Nexus bricked. (Dead fastboot, dead 3e recovery, only safemode

Searched all over and google yada yada yada. So i end up opening a thread here.
Hello guys/babes/kids/oldfags/ifags in disguise . I have a galaxy nexus here that will only boot into
-download mode,
- fastboot (not working at all, pc wont detect its fastboot and buttons all dead when in recovey/fastboot)
- safe mode - will boot into safe mode if i did combo buttons when attached to charger/pc
The story :
When i booted it from batt pull via only power button press, it will go into download mode straight and if i power off or factory reset in safe mode, it will reboot back into safe mode.
I cant flash anything since fastboot is broken. Ive tried Odin back to factory image of Galaxy Nexus GSM ICS and Jellybean but the prob isnt solved and fastboot is still broken. Tried repartition and bootloader update in ODIN yet still fail. And after every successful flash of repackaged stock, it will directly boot into safe mode (for both ICS and JB factory image). Why i didnt flash using fastboot? Fastboot is broken that is. Lets continue...
Other hardwares are still fine as in safe boot, ive tested all the buttons, display, calls, speaker etc. This is fastboot relate i believe as no matter what pc ive tried and all types of gnex drivers i tried. It wont even fart when connecting to pc(win7 x86). ADB works fine though when i booted into the safe mode. Im able to do adb stuffs but whenever i query it to reboot to fastboot or recovery, a dead end again. OMAPflash the tuna edition for omap4460? Tried yet still the same.
Additional facts : The phone was not unlocked and tempered by any way before the prob happened but now the bootloader is unlocked after i flashed the repackaged ODIN (chainfire posted it)

First of all, bricked mean there is nothing beside a black screen. Nowaday device are hard to brick. second, One does not simply flash a gnex with odin. It's simply a big wtf that is shining through my head. 3rd, if fastboot is not working, it's because it need a special driver that i suppose you didnt install. If you can boot your phone in fastboot but can connect to it, it's because you have a broken USB port, which is not the case since you can access adb. 4th, i'm still trying to know how you achieved this. It look to me you were following some instruction and it either ended, tl;dr i will skip a few step, hope it will work which didnt or you missed electricity. Install Kies, get your phone in download and recover your phone from it. Never attempt again to play on custom rom. Man, how can someone derp a galaxy nexus, it is like the easiest device to work with.

Thx for the reply.
Some clarification here, im not the owner of this phone. Im using 9100 and im just helping a friend to recovery. Ive tried few pcs and it wont even fart when i plugged in during fastboot or recovery (i read someone that in recovery you can do some commands) but the pc(s) wont even detect a hardware being plugged in.
Plus, in fastboot, i cant press any of the hardware keys. No vol up or vol down and the power button dosent work in recovery. I only got to the 3e stock recovery via 'adb reboot recovery' during in fast mode where it booted into the relaxing chillin android with the triangle + red exclamation mark on its tummy. Pressed all buttons and it went to the 3e recovery.
At the 3e, only power button works. I cant toggle a bit using the vol keys. Note that the vol buttons work to boot the phone into fastboot and download mode and also during safe mode, all the keys works flawlessly.
So, i tried the odin method to recovery this living Gnex but with a faulty heart and kidney but it will still boot to safe mode regardless of ICS or Jellybean.
How did this happen?
I have no idea. The owner of the phone claimed that he has never rooted or tempered it in any way. Plus it was still on ICS when i first got the phone (all data was still intact but it was in safe mode at that time).
Regarding drivers, ive attempted many pcs with almost every drivers available. Shall i list em here:
- KIES
- Naked Nexus drivers
- PDA.net
- the 'official' gnex verizon driver set which is said working on GSM devices etc.
Tried those and adb+download mode works fine. Pcs detect em and tried to install the hardware n search for the drivers but not in fastboot. Its just dead.

Adb works fine so im able to pull anything when its booted. Im not sure if we can pull anything in download mode. Adb/fastboot didnt work in download mode. Am i correct? Mind to share some light here on this. And in fastboot, none. No vol keys to operate and the 4-5 pc ive tried wont even fart a sound or hint anything saying a hardware connected. Its like its a dead circuit plugged only in fastboot.
This is quite a super rare case here. Most of the dead gnex i found on the next and also in XDA has a working fastboot that only needs drivers to make it working but on this unit, even the vol keys is dead. Awkwarddddd

Great to know you are not the one who did that . So if i understand correctly, you say download mode work ? If yes, flash another stock rom from chainfire using odin. No one wan't to flash with odin, but if fastboot is not working, you shall at least try it. Also, when you are putting the phone in download mode and connecting it to kies, it should detect it has to be restored. i would say the main reason for it to not work is that android debugging is not ticked in developer options. But that would be strange that adb work on safe mode. There is probably a way to that with adb but you will have to google it. Tell your friend to follow instruction next time. And ffs, do not use odin ! (Little idea too, try to get in fastboot not connected on PC and wait a few minutes then see if you can move with the volume button, then try to connect it on pc)

only suggestion left is to just boot into fastboot, leave it alone for awhile (5-10 mins), then try and plug it in and mess with it.
Try doing the whole driver thing mentioned above but instead of flashing a Google image just do the boot loader portion, what settings are you using to flash in Odin?

Also, when you are putting the phone in download mode and connecting it to kies, it should detect it has to be restored. i would say the main reason for it to not work is that android debugging is not ticked in developer options.

adb does not work in download mode/bootloader. adb only works when adbd (adb service) is started, and that happens in android boot process. it means android debug bridge.

Sorry for the long delay to anyone waiting for the answer/status.
Jtag cant fix it. Returned the device to a friend. Prolly a mobo replacement is the solution but its damn pricy here in Malaysia. It costs 80% of the price to get a new Gnex.
Hell yeah and thx to everyone supporting this.

Back to Stock Attempt

Heya, got an issue with a Galaxy Nexus phone. Phone does not seem to get any reception, I've attempted to add the Rogers network multiple times, and still either it says error or there is no reception at all. It is an unlocked phone, as the lock image shown upon restarting is unlocked, and as indicated in fastboot mode.
I figured it is the radio that is messed up. So I attempted to return to stock on my friend's phone. However, USB cable does not function properly, as I have attempted fastboot multiple times such as "fastboot devices" with the proper drivers installed etc. Using AirDroid to move the files, I've entered recovery mode only for it to load to the red triangle and then it restarts.
Also have repeated the steps after factory resetting. I am out of ideas guys, hoping maybe someone can provide some insight. Greatly appreciate it!!
Galaxy Nexus is the GSM one, not LTE. Thanks again.

The red triangle is the stock recovery.
Having ADB working does not mean fastboot will work as well, they require different drivers, check in Device Manager for something like Android 1.0 or Android, then update drivers for it. There is a nice guide in this section by Jubakuba.

Will look into the guide.
The thing is, with the phone plugged into any computer, it doesn't show up at all on the device manager, in order for me to update the driver.

I don't use the toolkit in general, but it's probably the easiest way to get the proper drivers installed.

Sorry, but if you think that, then you're holding it wrong.

The drivers are a pain the the arse.
Actually, i did that for my N7, install the drivers and the toolkit never saw the light of the day anymore.
Btw regarding the naked drivers, plug the phone in > device manager > update drivers > then direct to the naked drivers folder right?
See the problem is I've updated the drivers and everything.
Whether in Odin, I don't see the phone pop up when I plug it in.
And no IMEI shows when I use a command prompt and attempted fastboot devices.
I'm just going to tell my friend to return it to Bell.
Thanks guys.

[Q]Galaxy Nexus really bricked? No ADB/Recovery [HELP]

My Galaxy Nexus won’t boot into Paranoid Android after flashing a mod. It is not in a real bootloop (I don’t see a reboot including the Google splash screen) but keeps loading/booting the rom (Paranoid Android Logo). Reflash through recovery you would think.
Problem: my volumekeys are broken (cable broken when replacing USB-port)
So I can’t enter recovery with volume buttons. Therefor I wanted to use ADB commands but I only get ‘device not found’ when I type ADB devices or ADB reboot recovery.
ADB has always worked on this laptop so the drivers are installed correctly. Just to be sure I reinstalled the ADB drivers but with no success.
When I connect my Galaxy Nexus while in bootloop I see the Windows device manager showing: Galaxy Nexus (and after reinstall of ADB drivers it says Samsung Galaxy Nexus ADB Interface)
TLDR: Galaxy Nexus wont respond to ADB commands.
How to enter bootloader/recovery/push working rom or solve my problem any other way?
Try the galaxy nexus toolkit. It has an option for recovery even when ADB seems to be unavailable. Worked for me as my device was bricked.

To be honest I don't know. Since I just flashed Paranoid Android and booted my GN to see if it worked (which did) I immediately rebooted to flash the Mod. So it depends on the standard setting for this specific ROM.
Say it is not on, is there any way I could activate it without ADB and volume keys for recovery?
Im starting to think the only chance would be to buy new volume buttons strip and replace it myself.
I just don't get is why Windows recognises a Samsung Galaxy Nexus ADB Interface when i connect my phone while in bootloop and still the ADB drivers do not work.

I guess that is a problem, however i read some topics where people say that ADB should still work without USB Debugging on so I'm not really sure if that is the problem or not. Honestly I would think USB debugging would be on by default on a custom ROM to enable ADB in case of a bootloop.
Anyway, what are my options besides hardware repair volume button or buy new phone?
I'm having almost the exact same problem. Would appreciate it if you could PM me if you find a solution. Thanks.

Unless someone knows a way to force ADB connection i think it will be a hardware repair for the volume button. If you find a solution let me know as well
there has to be a way

Real helpful....
Anyway..if you can get to the bootanimation you're not bricked...even with the volume buttons not working. How badly are your volume buttons broken?
It should be possible if you know a bit of electrical stuff...if you find a way to close the circuit between the volume buttons then press the press the power button. It is possible...I just took apart my phone and if that isn't a problem for you, then it is possible to manually close the circuit.
