Upgrade ClockworkMod Recovery - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I rooted my Desire well over a year ago using Unrevoked. Since then I have only ever tried new ROM's out. I've never updated anything. Recently with Android 4.0, I've noticed I'm only able to install 4/5 apps before running out of space. This has become a problem and I really want to get a2sd working.
I've seen in the latest versions of ClockworkMod Recovery they have an option to format the SD card. This isn't available in my old version 2.5.0.7. I've been searching for a tutorial to walk me through upgrading ClockworkMod Recovery. I'm using Mac OSX Lion and any fastboot guides are using Windows.
Can anyone know in the know point me in the right direction to get started?
Many thanks,
Kristian

Of course, go here:
4ext.net
Grab 4ext recovery updater and flash 4ext recovery, it far batter then CWM.
Sent from my HTC Desire using flashes and thunders

as above, 4ext is better.
backup your sd card to computer before partitioning. a2sd setup will depend on ROM, instructions should be in first post.
just in case, because you haven't mentioned it, you need s-off before you can change recovery. revolutionary is easiest method. guide here.

Another option would be, if you want to stay at ClockworkMod Recovery, to just download an app called "ROM Manager" from Play Store. There you can update the recovery without S-OFF. For me it worked like a charm.

no ignore this please. do not use rom manager, has been known to cause more problems with this phone (myself included when i didn't know).
@andrhitm, i recommend you uninstall it. also the app may make it look like you have upgraded recovery, but pretty sure it hasn't, as i'm almost certain that this requires s-off.

+1.
Multiple issues reported through using of Rom Manager.

Rom manager is the leading cause of bad breath for HTC Desire users so stay away from it.

Ok thanks - that's new information for me. I've never had any (obvious) issues with this app but i won't use it anymore if it really causes such probs.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going down the revolutionary route. I'm trying to run the revolutionary program, it reboots my phone into HBOOT and hangs saying "waiting for fastboot..." Any ideas why I'm getting blocked a this stage?

Did you install drivers you need and uninstall PC suite?

I'm trying to this on Ubuntu 12.04, I also have access to a Mac. I don't have access to Windows.
I haven't got HTC Sync installed, which drivers do I need to install? I've read about getting the fastboot and Android SDK installed. I have the fastboot executable on my path, but that doesn't seem to help.

[Q] cant access recovery after root with unrevoked 3.21

Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post and i need some help. Here's the story.
I rooted my phone a few weeks ago, everything went stunningly easy, and worked great. Clockworkmod recovery was installed (by unrevoked) at this time. While driving home I broke my phone's screen and had to get a replacement phone. Asurion had a phone to me within 18 hours (my word they're fast). I slapped the 16GB SD card from my first phone in and I was off and running.
So I have my new phone with my original 16GB SD card and set it up normally again. I wanted to wait a bit and get it set prior to rooting again. Tonight I rooted the phone with Unrevoked 3.21 as I did before. It went much faster than before. I now have S-Off but clockworkmod recovery is not on my hboot screen and recovery mode doesn't work at all. Just a black screen for about 15 seconds before loading into the OS.
Have I screwed up a one click root? I've tried a few things.
I used droid-life as a guide to help me root.
Phone Stats:
Droid Incredible
Asurion replacement
OS 2.2
radio 2.15.00.07.28
kernel 2.6.32.15-gb7b01d1
build 3.21.605.1 CL231334 release-keys
Although clockworkmod recovery isn't in Hboot the reflash tool still says "Recovery Image: ClockworkMod Recovery" on the bottom. I have tried renaming the clockworkmod folder on the SD card to see if it would create a new one, or boot into clockworkmod recovery after realizing the folder is not there.
I have also tried formatting my SD card and running the reflash tool again. Again no dice, no recovery mode.
I have tried unrevoked 3.21 after every change.
What have I done? what do I do? any suggestions?
Thanks for anybody and everybody's input. I appreciate it. I would like to start flashing roms but really dont want to mess with it if I dont have a recovery option.
-MOJO
Is it a complete download of the unrevoked tool? Sounds almost like the recovery package isn't there. Try redownloading unrevoked and run it again. Do you have root and Superuser app at least? If so, try downloading and running ROM Manager and tell it to flash Clockwork again. Still no dice, try telling it to flash RA recovery. And for the record, which screen do you have?
I wish I knew

thanks for the quick reply I will try that. Yes I have root and the superuser app.
I dont know how to tell which screen I have, but I was wondering the same thing. BoyGeniusReport says its incredibly hard to tell the difference and I haven't found were it says SLED vs AMOLED
Grrrr

Tried the reflashing clockworkmod recovery, no dice.

It's an alternate recovery. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758874
It's also the second to the last option in ROM Manager. Flash Alternate Recovery: RA_GNM Recovery v1.7.6
I actually like that one better. It was able to format my SD card correctly. I just miss the integration with ROM Manager.
Phew... It worked.
the alternate recovery worked.
now if I want to flash ROMs do I need to know anything in particular before doing so with the AMON_RA recovery tool.
I downloaded the a4d utility that I found when doing a search for AMON_RA on appbrain. It asks if I want to flash my phone to unlock my bootloader (and void my warranty, haha).
do I need to unlock my bootloader before flashing ROM's
I like the sense UI. thats all I have actually used. Is there anything better? what are suggested, STABLE, ROMs/kernels for the DInc? or should I stay "stock 2.2 rooted"?

Uncommon sense with king kernel bfs # 5 is as good or better than stock.
Btw. Hboot only shows recovery, not clockwork recovery. Did you ever try selecting recovery from hboot?

With flashing ROMs. do Custom ROM's have the bloatwear (CityID) removed?

Uncommon sense has some of it removed. Some of it you can remove yourself. It's the only rom I've donated to and had on my phone more than two days.
Just be careful if removing stuff. Some of it has other dependencies. There are guides on how to remove things safely without breaking other functionality.
Also do a backup first. I'm not sure how amon ra works, but it must be in there somewhere.

It is. In the main menu, just like Clockwork
So I definitely have recovery with the amon_RA 1.7.6 alternative recovery with the ROM manager. but from what I have read I can no longer use ROM manager to flash.
Now I have been searching for information/instructions on how to use AMON_RA but have come up short, at least recently written stuff. I can find a ton of information about clockworkmod which I assume is because of Unrevoked 3.21.
PonsAsinorem as you said you miss the integration of ROM manager. I really want to use ROM manager.
I read somewhere in XDA that people were having trouble using clockworkmod and ROM manager and it could be because of a corrupted cache. there were some LIMITED instructions about using ADB to fix it but I wasn't completely understanding them.
I think my problem is spawning from using my old SD card and maybe a corrupted cache. I have made a back up using Amon_RA (actually two).
Does anyone think that completely formatting my SD card (after moving my backups to my MAC) and factory restoring my phone. then reflashed using unrevoked 3.21, or reflashed clockworkmod recovery using rom manager would work to solve my problem with clockworkmod recovery?
I would have backups if it didn't work. I would just have to restore the Amon_RA backup if I screwed anything up or wanted my SD card back... Right?
Thanks for all the help so far.

Dirtpan. you're a lifesaver thanks for pointing me at this. saved clockwork for me. All this time, its because I have the new SLCD screen as opposed to the AMOLED screen.
For the record, my wife has an AMOLED screen and I an SLCD. I can see no discernible difference.

Please help a noob root

Hey guys I have been reading about this for the last 3 hours or so and I just want to make sure I have everything figured out before I start this practice. Please check over what I have lined up and let me know if you have any recommendations.
Phone Info:
HBoot 2.10
Android 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel 2.6.32.17
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI 1.90_003
I read this article first:

From there I decided that Universal Auto Root was the best choice for me. Is this correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
I am currently downloading the RUU and AutoRoot v2.0 as suggested by the instructions on the thread above. The part that is tripping me up is what to do about a ROM. From what I can tell the AutoRoot puts on the Sprint Lovers ROM. I have a fair amount of experience with ADW and LP so I'm not set on using the Sense UI. However if I do use Sense I think I would like to use this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026 It seems to be Sense minus the bull****. I don't know how to use AutoRoot with a different ROM. If anyone could help me there that would be amazing!
Also, if anyone recommends rooting a different way or using a different ROM please let me know or if someone can link me to go instructions about flashing ROMs etc.
Thank you and I apologize for asking something that has probably already been asked. I am just trying to get the most updated responses to ensure this goes well.

Yes. Make sure that HTC sync is not installed!!! and just used unrevoke forever and have HBOOT drivers installed Prier to rooting. GOOD LUCK
How do I get the HBOOT drivers installed? So nothing to do with unrevoked3? Should I format my SD card beforehand just to be safe as well? Sorry for so many questions.

Should I do the backups suggested here (RSA keys and nandroid)? Should I try to flash a ROM? Any suggested ROMs? How do I go about flashing a ROM? Move it to SD Card and go into recovery but then what?
Don't put unrevoke on your sd card. You have to do it on your PC. PLEASE MAKE A NANDROID!!! I CAN STRESS THAT ENOUGH!!! As far as Rom's try Myn's, is the best Rom right now.

If you have S-OFF you are rooted, now you just need to decide if you want to use a custom ROM or keep the stock one.
i'm not sure you absolutely get rooting. once you are rooted, you can SWITCH roms easily and safely. but, in order to do this, you need to install a custom recovery and a rooted rom. in the earlier days, devs would compile rooted roms from scratch, but sprint lovers is just a rooted rom with minor improvements. just root and then change roms.
Alright I rooted it successfully, flashed a ROM successfully, and then tried it out. Now I would like to try another one. I put the new ROM on the SDCard and now I am wondering what I have to wipe in clockwork recovery. I went into recovery and I have wiped cache partition, wiped data/factory reset, and wiped dalvik cache. Now do I just go ahead and "install zip from sdcard"?
Yes, going from ROM to ROM wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik and flash as normal. Should be good.
Always make backups. I advise you to change your Recovery to Amon Ra's. This will allow you to make backups of your "RSA Keys." This is important for 4G / WiMax.
Once you've changed recoveries, should you even choose to (don't HAVE to), make a backup with that one. Backups from Clockwork will not work with Amon's recovery, from what I've heard. Maybe there is a way from last I heard, but not sure. So when that's done, you can put those clockwork backups on your computer or delete them. Only after making sure you're sitting fine.
Either way, establish backups (I have a stock rooted backup, confirmed working CURRENT ROM as well as taking one before doing something drastic. JIC ) and then start flashing. Try to enjoy yourself.
edit: toss those backups somewhere safe IE computer / ext hdd etc

Hey guy also a bit of a noob here when it comes to the Evo, I rooted my incredible and it worked fine but I am worried a bit more about this phone cause its a work phone. First I was wondering does 4g work with any of the custom roms? I see that Cryogen just came out with an asop rom that seems to work with 4g but I am wondering do the sense based roms work with 4g? Also I see something about wimax keys what are they and what happens if I lose them.

4g works with all ota-based roms (minus the serious exeptions of course). rsa keys are the acutal keys that say "this phone is authorized to use the sprint 4g network". they are matched with hardware, so if you lose them, you cant ever get them back. even sprint cant. the easiest way to prevent this is to not use clockworkmod (i think its safe now) and to back up your keys. niether of these are very hard.
Ok thanks so I just use unrevoked to root the phone and then do a first time nandroid backup and I should be good to go? Then I can do S-off if I want?
Also how hard right now is it to put the phone back to stock if something strange should happen? Want to make sure I get to use my 7 buck a month insurance if I have something go wrong with the phone.

Rooted Desire with unrevoked, now things are messed up

Hello
I recently rooted my phone with unrevoked when things was starting to **** me up..yeah I know it sounds bad and it's that bad.
I rooted my phone and everything was fine until I came to the Clockworkmod screen after the startup. Below the meny I was able to read this.
Code:

E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
After some research I realise this is bad but I don't know how bad it is.
I can tell you guys I got the Bravo PTV(?)4 S-ON..no other mentions.
The phone works as it could but i'm concerned and want my phone to work properly..as it should. Does anyone here have a clue, whatsoever I have to do to make this work like a charm.
I red this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853583&page=7 thread and it seems like Amonra works as a replacement to clockworkmod but I don't know how to make this work. As far as I understand it I have to reflash my phone with Amonra, like Clockworkmod.
SD card. Probably you didnt make a gold card.
I hate to say it, but, even I went through this mess.
1. Make a "gold card" of your SD card. You can find this by google. You own a Desire. This is a fact of life.
2. After a gold card, do a root of your phone. I would also flash Clockworkmod recovery, personally I use ROM Manager for this
then and only then, can you think about flashing a ROM
after you do a nandbackup
and wipe all 3 cache memories
then flash through recovery, and not RM
God forbid there are 12 billion threads on this.
3. Drink a hell of a lotta beer, and call us next week.
4, Dont even think about special sd partitions yet
hell, if you cant do a simple flash, why do ya wanna do all the spectacular ****.......

Ok I did a little more reading. So you have root, and because you have pvt4, clockwork recovery isn't working properly and you need to replace it with Ra.
I think it would work to s-off your device (http://www.alpharev.nl) and then use fastboot to erase clockwork and flash Ra.

Wow, thanks. Seem to be at bit risky to do that step..uh. I will do some research on my own. By the way, isn't it possible to unroot my device and then root it again?
Edit: And what happends if I install Clockworkmod via rom manager? Could it possible fix the problem? Does it really matter if it's flashed into my device or not. If I install that and enter recovery mode through the rom manager, could it possible be another working version of cwm?

I had this exact same issue with my PV4 desire. You don't need to flash AlphaRev to get past the "firmware too new" error (I didn't). All I did was resetting android back to factory setting and unrevoked with Amonra recovery.

No worries, s-off is about the same ad rooting, but yes you can unroot and root again ad the poster below suggests. Never thought of that!
The important bit is making sure to use the Ra recovery.

This sounds too easy, are you for real? I mean, that's your first post..not that convincing tho. Can someone else recommend this method, I don't have to hurry since my phone is working normal..just that messy thing with cwm.
Thanks for all help so far, I appriciate it.
Yes indeed. I was surprised myself.
Anyway, I took from this forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063879
It worked for me. I had the same problem. I started with CWM, I have SU in the app drawer, thinking I have root the phone. But when I try to flash with Redux ROM, I got the error. So, I didn't want to S-OFF, so I decided to go with Amon-RA. And got that error saying firmware too new.
Then I found that thread....it did well for me.
Good Luck.
I've just checked and can't see a zysploit.apk so don't think it will apply.
Easiest thing for you to do would be to s-off and flash a new recovery.

Thank you axbilly, I will check that out. Many thanks.

You're wrong, when you're in applications..then press All Applications and scroll to the bottom, there it is.
Yeah, if this dosn't work I will try something else. I want to flash the new sense rom, otherwise I wouldn't care.
Fair enough, must be a PVT4 thing then.

After I flash with amon-ra and flash with Redux, zysploit.apk is no longer there in my apps. Perhaps this is only used by CWM?
What do you mean? Don't you think my phone is rooted?
What is S-ON/OFF anyway, does it mind if I unchecked Disable phone security in unrevoked?
Sounds nice to me, I should give it a try and do as you say.
Remove the apk and retry flashing it with AmonRa.
My first try with unrevoked wtih CWM got the cache error that you've posted on first page.
I found in the forum if you're PVT-4 and erase size < 40000, CWM won't work and it will prompt you that cache error.
This forum suggest that to go with amon-ra...and so I did.
Can't comment on s-on or s-off, many thread on this already.
Anyhow, for me I wanted root because I want to install Redux. Since CWM didn't work for me, so I went with amon-ra.
IT WORKED. I don't know how to thank you axbilly, this was really easy compared to the other ways installing amonra. Cheers mate!
Thank you too stringer!

[Q] What are all the things i need to flash a rom?

Hi,
I'm going to flash a rom (It's InserCoin, to be precise) for the first time and I want to make sure I'm not missing something. As I gather it, these are the steps I need to take:
root
s-off
make ext4 partition on my SD card
do a NANDroid backup
flash CM7 r2 Hboot (I'm not sure if I need to do this, nor am I sure if this is the correct one for InsertCoin)
flash the rom itself
Is that everything? And is it in correct order?
Thanks for help ;-)
Read this tutorial, it's very helpful

Root, S-off and flash CM7r2
Do NANDROID (and try to do a restore just to be sure its working. optional )
Copy your SD card's fat32 files on PC
Partition SD card (1GB EXT4 recommended)
Restore fat32 files back to SD
Flash rom.
I think this is way more logical. Good luck!
Use the link that timmaaa posted...
It was invaluable to me when I first rooted and flashed a rom.

Always, always, always read at least the first and second posts in the ROM thread. These are invaluable sources of information for what you need to have and what you need to do.
Sadly I haven't got beyond the very first step: rooting. I prepared everything, started unrevoked, everything seemed to be going well, but after it said "Rooting..." for a few minutes, I ended up with error and question: "Is your system too new?"
I thought that unrevoked works for the stock android 2.3, was I wrong? If I was, do I have any chance of getting root?
Try Revolutionary.
If your Desire is on the official Gingerbread you'll have to use Revolutionary instead of Unrevoked.
This thread might be useful for you (read carefully)...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218144
Then download Revolutionary here (again read carefully and make sure you understand what you're doing)...
http://revolutionary.io/
Hope it helps. If so, hit thanks.
Thanks for advice!
However, I have one last (hopefully ) question: When and how can I flash CM7 r2 Hboot? And more importantly: Should I flash it?
You don't have to flash CM7r2, you can just stick with stock hboot if you want to. I was using InsertCoin for a while and I still had stock hboot at the time.
With InsertCoin you can keep to stock hboot, but lots of roms now are using CM7r2 as the hboot of choice.
Up to you if you wanna change it, but like xybadog said in his post, always read atleast the first and second posts in a rom thread as they'll (usually) tell you which hboot will work with them.
If you do wanna change your hboot you can use "Android Flasher" found here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638
to do it. Just read the thread and it should answer any questions you have.
Hope it helps. If it does, hit thanks.
I tried to root the revolutionary way and once again got stuck. They say I need to install HTC fastboot drivers, so I downloaded it from their link, started the installation, and nothing happened. I tried several times and observed in task manager that the installation proces starts, runs for a few seconds and then ends. What should I do now? Should I uninstall all other htc drivers from my computer and try then?
When I rooted my phone several months ago, I remember having a similar problem of unrevoked not detecting phone even though I had their drivers installed.
I remember installing HTC Sync. This will install HTC Sync and USB drivers needed to communicate with the phone. After the installation, I uninstalled HTC Sync but left the USB Drivers installed.
Unrevoked worked afterwards.
Ignore me, I'm a n00b.
The problem is not that the phone is not being detected, I have installed drivers needed to root using unrevoked. However, as I gather it, I need different drivers for revolutionary and I have not been able to install those, or at least I think I haven't, because the installer shutdowns immediately.
So I'm asking: What should I do now? Should I try to run revolutionary anyway? I'm afraid of bricking my phone in that case...
I believe they are using a different driver. Have you seen this page? There is a different driver provided here than the one used for unrevoked.

Yes, what I'm trying to say is that I can't install THIS driver.
I found out that I already had installed some HTC drivers, but I don't know which version and I'm pretty sure they are not the ones I need. Can anyone suggest a solution?
And I'm asking again: Is it dangerous for the phone to run revolutionary at this point? Will it mess up the phone, or will it simply say it cannot run?

even if u have the wrong drivers (about impossible, as all drivers works, there are only different packages around), nothing will happen..at the worst condition the phone will not be detected
in adddition revolutionary, even if in beta, seems pretty stable..no one bricked the phone..only 2 things can happen when u run revolutionary: phone not detected or phone successfully s-offed.
about the drivers, just to be up to date, uninstall completely htc sync and the drivers (uninstall everything containing "htc" on ur installed programs lists )..reboot the pc..install the drivers from the revolutionary documentation..that's all...if these drivers again doesn not install, then install the last htc synch, then uninstall it, but leave the drivers (these drivers are the same of revolutionary doc)
I finally did S-OFF and ROOTed, everything worked. However, when I tried to flash the cm7 r2 hboot, something went wrong and i cannot turn the phone on properly, it tries to boot, but then it reboots and get to recovery. I think maybe its only because the stock rom cannot load once i've changed the hboot, but I don't know how to flash new rom when i cannot copy it to the sd card. Can anyone help me somehow?
Can't you use a card reader to connect it to a pc and save the rom to it?

Nevermind, I figured out myself, that nothing was wrong and that I can mount sd card from recovery, so I'm running Insertcoin already
Still, I have one more question: I also found out that I can partition the SD card from the recovery, so I did it, but now I don't know what which typo of ext partition I've actually created. Is it ext4 or ext3?

[Q] Ways of flashing custom rom. How to install cyanongenMod.

I'm using a GSM HTC Desire I bought a year ago. Its currently running froyo 2.2. I've used unrevoked to root my phone and did the s-off produce using alpharev a while ago. I'm now trying to flash a custom rom onto it. I read through a couple of tutorials and found out 2 ways to do it. One is to install ROM manager but I have to do a "flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in the software which I don't know if I should do. Another is to download the custom rom and install it through recovery mode by holding on power and volume down.... Is there a difference?
Also reading CyanongenMod installation procedures "3. Update your radio! New radio from HTC 2.2+ roms is required (Desire Radio Thread)." came up and I don't if I need to do this.
Thanks in advance.

Personally IMO i would never use ROM manager. I would upgrade your recovery to '4EXT recovery touch' first, search the forum for the guide, its simple enough.
You should also partition your memory card so it has an EXT partition on it. I would recommend using Gparted to partition the sd.
IMO i would leave the radio update for now.
Search for a suitable ROM to flash, download it, put it on your SD card, go into recovery and flash.
There are loads of guides in the forum just look and follow step by step, if you do everything completely to the guides you will not have a problem.

Why would he need to waste his time, effort and sd-space by partitioning for a ROM that does not natively support a2sd

Hi! The easiest way to install a new ROM it's by ROM manager. You can use the recovery mode also, but it's more complicated.
You can flash your recovery whitout any problem.
ALWAYS remember to make a nandroid backup before installing a ROM in case anything goes wrong.
You should also wipe data, cache and dalvik.
After installing a new ROM, use ROM managers or recovery to make à sd-ext partitions (more space for apps)

Take your advice and go somewhere else. ROM Manager both sucks and blows and just causes problems. The only "good" use it does have is the ability to download ROM's straight to your phone. Otherwise steer clear.

Do not use ROM manager to make backups. Can just cause problems as already stated. Don't be lazy and do it yourself via recovery, now with 4EXT touch it's easier and simpler than ever.
Yes. Go and flash manually. Rom manager is just a middle man that screws up the process. Dont ever use it at least for Desire coz it really doesnt play well with it. Even after you successfully flashed cyanogenmod.

Use this fine guide?
I used this very fine guide when I wanted to go further than HTC would let me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
And it is maintained on XDA, which is nice.
