Rooted Desire with unrevoked, now things are messed up - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I recently rooted my phone with unrevoked when things was starting to **** me up..yeah I know it sounds bad and it's that bad.
I rooted my phone and everything was fine until I came to the Clockworkmod screen after the startup. Below the meny I was able to read this.
Code:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
After some research I realise this is bad but I don't know how bad it is.
I can tell you guys I got the Bravo PTV(?)4 S-ON..no other mentions.
The phone works as it could but i'm concerned and want my phone to work properly..as it should. Does anyone here have a clue, whatsoever I have to do to make this work like a charm.
I red this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853583&page=7 thread and it seems like Amonra works as a replacement to clockworkmod but I don't know how to make this work. As far as I understand it I have to reflash my phone with Amonra, like Clockworkmod.

SD card. Probably you didnt make a gold card.
I hate to say it, but, even I went through this mess.
1. Make a "gold card" of your SD card. You can find this by google. You own a Desire. This is a fact of life.
2. After a gold card, do a root of your phone. I would also flash Clockworkmod recovery, personally I use ROM Manager for this
then and only then, can you think about flashing a ROM
after you do a nandbackup
and wipe all 3 cache memories
then flash through recovery, and not RM
God forbid there are 12 billion threads on this.
3. Drink a hell of a lotta beer, and call us next week.
4, Dont even think about special sd partitions yet
hell, if you cant do a simple flash, why do ya wanna do all the spectacular ****.......

This should help:

I already got the super user icon in programs?
Thank you stringer. I've been looking at this thread for a long time now but i'm concurned. There's no problem for me to flash the damn thing, absolutly not..the thing I don't know is how it would make any sense. If I install that program, it still doesn't remove the clockworkmod which drives me crazy.

Ok I did a little more reading. So you have root, and because you have pvt4, clockwork recovery isn't working properly and you need to replace it with Ra.
I think it would work to s-off your device (http://www.alpharev.nl) and then use fastboot to erase clockwork and flash Ra.

I think that's the best plan, but I suggest researching it yourself too!

Wow, thanks. Seem to be at bit risky to do that step..uh. I will do some research on my own. By the way, isn't it possible to unroot my device and then root it again?
Edit: And what happends if I install Clockworkmod via rom manager? Could it possible fix the problem? Does it really matter if it's flashed into my device or not. If I install that and enter recovery mode through the rom manager, could it possible be another working version of cwm?

I had this exact same issue with my PV4 desire. You don't need to flash AlphaRev to get past the "firmware too new" error (I didn't). All I did was resetting android back to factory setting and unrevoked with Amonra recovery.

No worries, s-off is about the same ad rooting, but yes you can unroot and root again ad the poster below suggests. Never thought of that!
The important bit is making sure to use the Ra recovery.

Good call, that's easier!

Same here. PVt-4. S-On.
I started with CWM, got the same error. Then, tried to root again with amon-ra, and it says firmware too new.
Solution: On the phone, Go to Settings-->Applications-->Manage Applications. Uninstall the Zysploit apk.
Run unrevoked again with amon-ra. All done.

The thing is, I can't factory reset my phone. I've tried but the phone dosn't reset itself, no..it ends up at clockwork mod after a reboot and when I reboot it from there, still everything is left untouched in my phone.

This sounds too easy, are you for real? I mean, that's your first post..not that convincing tho. Can someone else recommend this method, I don't have to hurry since my phone is working normal..just that messy thing with cwm.
Thanks for all help so far, I appriciate it.

Yes indeed. I was surprised myself.
Anyway, I took from this forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063879
It worked for me. I had the same problem. I started with CWM, I have SU in the app drawer, thinking I have root the phone. But when I try to flash with Redux ROM, I got the error. So, I didn't want to S-OFF, so I decided to go with Amon-RA. And got that error saying firmware too new.
Then I found that thread....it did well for me.
Good Luck.

I've just checked and can't see a zysploit.apk so don't think it will apply.
Easiest thing for you to do would be to s-off and flash a new recovery.

Thank you axbilly, I will check that out. Many thanks.

You're wrong, when you're in applications..then press All Applications and scroll to the bottom, there it is.
Yeah, if this dosn't work I will try something else. I want to flash the new sense rom, otherwise I wouldn't care.

Fair enough, must be a PVT4 thing then.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

After I flash with amon-ra and flash with Redux, zysploit.apk is no longer there in my apps. Perhaps this is only used by CWM?

What do you mean? Don't you think my phone is rooted?
What is S-ON/OFF anyway, does it mind if I unchecked Disable phone security in unrevoked?
Sounds nice to me, I should give it a try and do as you say.
Remove the apk and retry flashing it with AmonRa.

My first try with unrevoked wtih CWM got the cache error that you've posted on first page.
I found in the forum if you're PVT-4 and erase size < 40000, CWM won't work and it will prompt you that cache error.
This forum suggest that to go with amon-ra...and so I did.
Can't comment on s-on or s-off, many thread on this already.
Anyhow, for me I wanted root because I want to install Redux. Since CWM didn't work for me, so I went with amon-ra.

IT WORKED. I don't know how to thank you axbilly, this was really easy compared to the other ways installing amonra. Cheers mate!
Thank you too stringer!

[Q] cant access recovery after root with unrevoked 3.21

Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post and i need some help. Here's the story.
I rooted my phone a few weeks ago, everything went stunningly easy, and worked great. Clockworkmod recovery was installed (by unrevoked) at this time. While driving home I broke my phone's screen and had to get a replacement phone. Asurion had a phone to me within 18 hours (my word they're fast). I slapped the 16GB SD card from my first phone in and I was off and running.
So I have my new phone with my original 16GB SD card and set it up normally again. I wanted to wait a bit and get it set prior to rooting again. Tonight I rooted the phone with Unrevoked 3.21 as I did before. It went much faster than before. I now have S-Off but clockworkmod recovery is not on my hboot screen and recovery mode doesn't work at all. Just a black screen for about 15 seconds before loading into the OS.
Have I screwed up a one click root? I've tried a few things.
I used droid-life as a guide to help me root.
Phone Stats:
Droid Incredible
Asurion replacement
OS 2.2
radio 2.15.00.07.28
kernel 2.6.32.15-gb7b01d1
build 3.21.605.1 CL231334 release-keys
Although clockworkmod recovery isn't in Hboot the reflash tool still says "Recovery Image: ClockworkMod Recovery" on the bottom. I have tried renaming the clockworkmod folder on the SD card to see if it would create a new one, or boot into clockworkmod recovery after realizing the folder is not there.
I have also tried formatting my SD card and running the reflash tool again. Again no dice, no recovery mode.
I have tried unrevoked 3.21 after every change.
What have I done? what do I do? any suggestions?
Thanks for anybody and everybody's input. I appreciate it. I would like to start flashing roms but really dont want to mess with it if I dont have a recovery option.
-MOJO
Is it a complete download of the unrevoked tool? Sounds almost like the recovery package isn't there. Try redownloading unrevoked and run it again. Do you have root and Superuser app at least? If so, try downloading and running ROM Manager and tell it to flash Clockwork again. Still no dice, try telling it to flash RA recovery. And for the record, which screen do you have?
I wish I knew

thanks for the quick reply I will try that. Yes I have root and the superuser app.

It's an alternate recovery. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758874
It's also the second to the last option in ROM Manager. Flash Alternate Recovery: RA_GNM Recovery v1.7.6
I actually like that one better. It was able to format my SD card correctly. I just miss the integration with ROM Manager.
Phew... It worked.
the alternate recovery worked.
now if I want to flash ROMs do I need to know anything in particular before doing so with the AMON_RA recovery tool.
I downloaded the a4d utility that I found when doing a search for AMON_RA on appbrain. It asks if I want to flash my phone to unlock my bootloader (and void my warranty, haha).
do I need to unlock my bootloader before flashing ROM's
I like the sense UI. thats all I have actually used. Is there anything better? what are suggested, STABLE, ROMs/kernels for the DInc? or should I stay "stock 2.2 rooted"?

Uncommon sense with king kernel bfs # 5 is as good or better than stock.
Btw. Hboot only shows recovery, not clockwork recovery. Did you ever try selecting recovery from hboot?

and still has all the capabilities of stock 2.2 (GPS, WIFI Tether, etc), I know that was a problem at one point. I assume/hope all has been fixed with those issues.

Uncommon sense has some of it removed. Some of it you can remove yourself. It's the only rom I've donated to and had on my phone more than two days.
Just be careful if removing stuff. Some of it has other dependencies. There are guides on how to remove things safely without breaking other functionality.
Also do a backup first. I'm not sure how amon ra works, but it must be in there somewhere.

It is. In the main menu, just like Clockwork
So I definitely have recovery with the amon_RA 1.7.6 alternative recovery with the ROM manager. but from what I have read I can no longer use ROM manager to flash.
Now I have been searching for information/instructions on how to use AMON_RA but have come up short, at least recently written stuff. I can find a ton of information about clockworkmod which I assume is because of Unrevoked 3.21.
PonsAsinorem as you said you miss the integration of ROM manager. I really want to use ROM manager.
I read somewhere in XDA that people were having trouble using clockworkmod and ROM manager and it could be because of a corrupted cache. there were some LIMITED instructions about using ADB to fix it but I wasn't completely understanding them.
I think my problem is spawning from using my old SD card and maybe a corrupted cache. I have made a back up using Amon_RA (actually two).
Does anyone think that completely formatting my SD card (after moving my backups to my MAC) and factory restoring my phone. then reflashed using unrevoked 3.21, or reflashed clockworkmod recovery using rom manager would work to solve my problem with clockworkmod recovery?
I would have backups if it didn't work. I would just have to restore the Amon_RA backup if I screwed anything up or wanted my SD card back... Right?
Thanks for all the help so far.

For the record, my wife has an AMOLED screen and I an SLCD. I can see no discernible difference.

[Q] rooted evo... bricked evo... help!

got my evo about a month ago. rooted lastnight since unrevoked finally pushed out their 3.3 version which is updated for my version of hboot (2.02). the root went very smoothly. i installed the latest cyanogenmod rom, only to discover there was no market or gmail app with the rom! wish i had known that before. after doing some research online, i found out i needed to flash or install a "gapps" apk. so, looked around for that for a couple hours and couldn't find it. i downloaded what i thought would be the right .zip file to get the market on my phone (a vending.apk that was listed in another thread having to do with this same issue). so anyway... downloaded that, moved it to the root of my sd card, flashed it through clockworkmod recovery (by the way, everything up until this point was perfect) and finally rebooted my phone... only it never rebooted. the white htc EVO 4G screen was there. then, black screen, as if it was about to begin the cyanogenmod boot screen and fully boot. but, no. it went from white evo screen to black screen... to OFF. after this, i couldn't even turn it on to get it into hboot or access recovery. tried to do that for two hours. and finally i was able to get in... so i tried doing a factory/data reset through recovery, then a cache clear, then reboot. nothing. same thing. went back into recovery, tried reflashing cyanogenmod rom again. nothing. tried flashing myn's rom. nothing. all i get is installation aborted.
i am pretty sure that this is not a complete brick since i am now able to access hboot and recovery. but if i can't flash anything... and i'm stuck in hboot and recovery and cant boot my phone... what the hell do i do now? please help me figure this out!! anybody have any good advice or a known fix...??
Boot into recovery. Do a factory reset. then wipe cache and dalvik catch. Re flash cynagon and let it boot. You then need to find gapps.zip. Boot into recovery flashing gapps.zip.
i did all that. step by step. and when i reflashed the rom, that is when it wouldn't install, saying installation aborted. but, i'm gonna do it again. let's see if my phone wants to play nice now...

If that does not work! you are going to have to update with sprint lovers rom, that is in a PCM36IMG.ZIP. Install it by holding the _vol and th power button, boot into boot loader, than it will search for the zip file and ask you if you want to update, say yes ans just weigh for it to be done. Its going to take few minutes first boot! just hold on. I hope this helps in anyway.

Did you try a rooted RUU yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
Wipe everything twice first (just to be safe). Are you using Amon RA or Clockwork, by the way? The only other thing I can think of would be that your SD card isn't formatted properly, but that would have to mean you intentionally formatted it or put in a new one that didn't have the right files on it.

i am using clockwork. i've wiped so many times... but i can't make anything happen. and, i did format the sd card eventually, but not until a couple of hours ago... and only as a last resort because nothing else worked and i've been trying to fix this since last night, so i figured it couldn't hurt. but if that is part of the problem... how can i fix it? thanks for your response. i don't know what else to do other than take it in for a switch.l but if i can get into hboot... then sprint can too... and they will see that i'm rooted and void warranty. so am i completely screwed?
I had same issue.
I just reflashed the sprintlover rom (PC36IMG.ZIP) which came with Amon_RA recovery.
Then i installed the CM6 with Amon_RA recovery and everything works fine now.
Good that i did Titanium backup few days before
This is happening to me too. Almost everything he's describing is the same. Except I installed a gapps.zip and then it wouldn't boot after that. No matter what I flash, it either gives me a status 7 error and aborts the install or it may "install successfully" but it never boots. Also tried the pc36img.zip as well. I had a nandroid backup and tried to restore that, but that aborts saying cannot flash boot image. Tried a rooted and also an unrooted stock ruu, they won't work and the .exe version on a pc can't find my phone when I plug it in and power it on. Anyone have any Ideas for me. I can get more specific error messages and hboot numbers, etc. if needed.
I think you should get Amon recovery PCIMG zip file and change recovries and try everything again... IMO
Edit: I posted the Amon file and all you have to do is rename it to PCIMG.zip. Also I think the gapps you were looking for you can find on the cm site itself or within that thread. Sorry if it sounds like I a being negative but I see alot of people get on noob and I wondered why but unfortunately its because things like this happen. In the OP for CM6 it says to use Amon and backup your keys. Now if you get your phone backup you got to first check and make sure your RSA keys are in tact unless you backed them up already.
Joeykrim has a app on the market to check or there are numerous threads on what to do. Sorry and hope it works out for you if not INS is your friend

Yea but have you tried Amon and from what I read and this is from developers Amon has a much better handle on things as far as backing stuff up, partitions and protection of keys.
I ran Clockwork on my wifes phone because to me its simple and works with Rom manager but after a while I just said F it and switched since it was messing up my backups. Hey to each his own..
Ok, I don't believe that your device is bricked. You may have flash the wrong gapps or something, but is should be easy to fix.
First, download these 3 files and put them on the root of your SD card:
Cyanogen 6 stable for evo
Latest gapps for HDPI
Calkulin's format all
Red through first, then follow my instructions EXACTLY:
1.) Boot into recovery.
2.) Flash Calkulin's all format. This will wipe everything that needs wiping. (everything but the SD card)
3.) Without exiting recovery immediately flash the CM6 .zip. Do not flash the gapps yet.
4.) Reboot the device now. It will boot into cyanogen, but will not have market or anything. Once fully booted, reboot to recovery.
5.) Do not wipe or anything, just flash the gapps HDPI.
6.) Boot the phone and enjoy.
Evo won't load any roms, can only get into clockwork recovery
Okay, so if I try your steps, just like before The install gets almost to the end, then I get:
"assert failed: write_raw_image ("/tmp/boot.img","boot")
E:Error in /sdcard/update-cm-6.1.2-supersonic-signed.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Sorry Playya, I wanted to try this one more time first. I'm going to try loading Amon Ra now. do I need to rename it to pcimg.zip or should i just flash the current file name?
In case it helps anyone, I have

it may say oops if you battery level is low... I think Amon is so much better its just that Unrevoked puts Clockwork in with their root so people get lazy and leave it in... Amon - its the way to go.
1. Charge your battery and try again
2. Backup your wimax keys - then check how big the file is and hopefully its like 12 megs... If so keys may be ok

Is this a problem or is it not a problem? Rooting.

I don't want to make this long so here goes. I don't have a clue what happened but it some how worked.
I just wanted to root my phone so I went to this site and followed the instructions to the key.
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-new/
I had problems with step 10 and I dont even know if i properly saved the wimax what ever the hell that is/
When the bootloader came up it would just load from the sdcard and load up the " PC36IMG.zip" and and update.
I was never able to do step 11.
I kept going back and forth trying to repeat the step and that z4 app would never let me unroot and i repeatedly rerooted.
So I decided to reset my phone and sdcard hoping this would reset the whole process.
I then found something else to root. This website.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Unfortunatley I didn't follow the instructons right because I am a damn fool.
So I went to straight running the unrevoked app without running the modified Android USB driver. Wierd thing is that I already got that superuser ninja looking guy in my apps. I was able to use wifi tether.
Now here is the thing, I was never able to do that recovery thing with that little black screen with green letters. It seems that I skipped that step to recover something. How can I redo that?
When I went to ROM manager and tried to install a ROM it says "flashing an update package on a recovery other than clockworkmod recovery may not work properly. Proceed?"
Does that mean it won't work? Im afraid to push Proceed.
Hope I made sense for someone to help. Its a giant mess... I wish I could start all over...
Boot into the bootloader and accept the update and reboot, that'll install a recovery for you.
Also, you're using the paid version?

Dude I love you. What about when loading the ROM from ROM manager, "flashing an update package on a recovery other than clockworkmod recovery may not work properly. Proceed?"
What is clockworkmod recovery, what does it do, where do I get it?
Oh and yes i am using the paid version, why should I get my 5 bucks back?

Clockwork recovery is just different from amon_ra. You can go into rom manager and click flash clockwork recovery, if you wish. And that message means like flashiing clockwork on amon_ra , you may get errors. Also, you can use clockwork on amon_ra, as to still download roms, but you can't backup with it.
I also want to add ever since I tried the root, it took my phone back to the stone age. I los the newest htc update with swype. Why is that?
The Rom Mananger isnt working for me either. It wont load any ROMS. IT says downloading but nothing ever happens, how long does it take to download a ROM?
I downloaded this OTA SUPERSONIC 3.70 and it wont load either? Whats going on .
I really need some major help!

I'm not sure why you would root your EVO without knowing anything about the process or at the very least the terminology, but it's not too late. I recommended that you go and read and get a better feel for the process.
There are at least a dozen threads on the subject. Here's one to start you off Helpful Threads.

[Q] lost...after attempted rooting, stuck

Hi everyone... I have been doing a bit of searching with no luck so far. And I searched a lot but no luck in finding my stituation and don't want to screw up the phone completely...
I bought a D-Z used, Bell Rom. It showed to be S-Off, but when i checked to see if it was rooted with RootCheck, it said it wasn't. So I started the process of applying Visionary for Temprooting and then on terminal emulator, I got the error: exec format error...and, stupid me, decided to keep going. I followed the rest of the process, up to step 10 on http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how...g2-htc-vision/.
But when i turned phone back on, it got stuck on the white screen with the green htc logo....
If I vol-down/turn on, i see:
Vision PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-076.2000 (PC1012000)
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.20.26_M
eMMC-boot
Aug 20 2010,16:51:01
HBOOT and the options:
FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, SIMLOCK, SYSTEM INFO, IMAGE CRC
On system info it says
OS Ver.-1.34.666.5
When I put the battery in it, plugged into charger, it goes into ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5 and below the menu it says:
ClockworkRecovery v3.0.0.5
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
the phone says S-off: should I just copy some rom and launch the flashing? If so, a zip to the SD card is the way to go, right?
Or is something bad and should I attempt first loading a stock rom? (I guess not, because it says S-Off!).
It sounds like whatever you did in your rooting process wiped your system, causing the phone to be stuck at the htc screen. So yes, put a ROM zip on your sd card and try to flash it. I would wipe system before you do though. Again, it sounds like the systems already wiped, but it won't hurt anything to wipe again.
On another note, I don't know what the unlockr root process is, but afaik, the recommended rooting method is to stay away from Visionary and use the Gfree method in the G2 wiki. It's much safer than Visionary.

What would you suggest? Any custom Rom as zip should do then? Any potential damage/ risk of bricking?
thanks!

first, download any untouched flashable sense rom (make sure it's not a full rom with hboot, radio etc, just /system)
place the rom.zip on your sd card
reboot with vol down
choose recovery
wipe cache and wipe data/factory reset
choose install zip form sd (not update), then select the zip and press trackpad
hopefully this is all you will have to do to make the phone functional again
here is a flashable rooted /system from a stock sense rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012763
hope this will help

thanks for you help. I'm trying it now.
I had tried the other method... but it didn't work out. I should have read more before going for what looked simpler - visionary.
I will report soon. Hopefully, i will have a phone and not a piece of wall...
THANK YOU!!!!! IT WORKED PERFECTLY. I GUESS I CAN NOW GO TO Cyanogen, right?

this is a G2 rom, not DZ. it's dangerous to mix them if we are talking about full stock roms. bricks happen from such mixes.
santiargy, any success?
ah, i mised a post.
I am really glad to hear it worked.

Status 7, installation aborted

Hello, I have successfully rooted my HTC Desire running android 2.2 with HBOOT V 0.93.0001 using the Unrevoked method. I Installed ROM Manager and installed ClockWorkMod V 2.5.0.7. I also made a backup.
The purpose was to install a custom ROM, in order to get rid of the Orange bloatware that is on the phone, as well as trying something new.
However whenever I try to instal any ROMS I get an error (Status 7 - installation aborted.)
I then updated the Radio to radio 5.10.05.30 and tried again, same error.
I've tried Cyanogenmod 7, as well as the Oxygen ROM and both aren't working.
I have spent most of today trying to get it to work, and googled alot however I just can't fix this error
Thanks.
you have to do a full wipe data and cache then go to advanced and erase dalvik cache. After all the above you can now install new rom. And if your trying to install new gingerbread you must s off your phone and then update the recovery to the latest one. which i believe is 3.2.0.2 i dunno something like that
When I do a factory reset it just says E: Can't find MISC
No app2sd partition found.
E:cant mount cache:recovery/log
etc etc
says the same thing with wiping the cache, although it does say "cache wipe complete"
when I select wipe Dalvik cache the screen just flickers and appears to do nothing...
What do you mean about updating the recovery, you mean the HBOOT?
Why can nobody answer this? I've literally been reading stuff ALL DAY just to fix this error, yet still can't solve the problem.
Didn't think installing a ROM could be so hard....
I get it you need to back everything up onto your pc from your sd card then go to market on your phone download rom manager and partition your sd with 512mb ext and 0mb swap. and then install any rom u like
Thanks for your help but that didn't work. Not sure what to do.
Which hardwarerevision does your desire have (boot into hboot and read the first line, number behind the word pvt)?
"bravo pvt4 shop s-on"
Just did a hard factory reset, installed ROM Manager and tried again, still didn't work
Also just tried to get my backup restored in the meantime (so I have contacts) oh no, "This does not seem to be a valid backup. The MD5 file is missing"
Can anything else possibly go wrong?
So your hardwarerevision is pvt4. You cannot use clockworkmod recovery and still less rom manager with this one. Download amonra recovery, integrate it in unrevoked (file>custom recovery>choose downloaded amonra recovery) and run unrevoked (like last time) again.
No warranty for any damage.
And a real good advice: Never use rom manager, it's a horrible software which mostly causes heavy and horrible problems!!! Run all operations directly in recovery instead.
Trying that now

Are there known issues with revision pvt 4 and ROM manager/ClockWorkMod?
Did just what you said and it's working perfect, I performed a Nandroid backup so I can always go back to the stock ROM, I also unchecked unrevoked forever so the warrenty should be okay IF I go back?
Thanks so much!!!!

Yes, there are known issues, especially the one you had, which is imho the most important and worst one, because you cannot flash anything.
This disclaimer was referred to me. But yeah, warranty of your provider should be okay if going back to stock.
No problem, happy I could help. Congratulations to you.
