Please help a noob root

Hey guys I have been reading about this for the last 3 hours or so and I just want to make sure I have everything figured out before I start this practice. Please check over what I have lined up and let me know if you have any recommendations.
Phone Info:
HBoot 2.10
Android 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel 2.6.32.17

I am currently downloading the RUU and AutoRoot v2.0 as suggested by the instructions on the thread above. The part that is tripping me up is what to do about a ROM. From what I can tell the AutoRoot puts on the Sprint Lovers ROM. I have a fair amount of experience with ADW and LP so I'm not set on using the Sense UI. However if I do use Sense I think I would like to use this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026 It seems to be Sense minus the bull****. I don't know how to use AutoRoot with a different ROM. If anyone could help me there that would be amazing!
Also, if anyone recommends rooting a different way or using a different ROM please let me know or if someone can link me to go instructions about flashing ROMs etc.

Just go to www.unrevoked.com and chose your phone. Download the reflash file and the usb driver. Follow the instructions of how to install rhe usb driver. Run the reflash file and it will do the rest. Good hunting.....

So do the unrevoked3 and then the unrevoked forever? Do I need to remove HTC Sync or anything?

Yes. Make sure that HTC sync is not installed!!! and just used unrevoke forever and have HBOOT drivers installed Prier to rooting. GOOD LUCK

Ok well I never moved the unrevoked-forever.zip to my SD Card. Was I supposed to? Unrevoked3 flash tool or whatever ran and now my phone reads S-Off which is the goal. Now what do I do? Should I do the backups suggested here (RSA keys and nandroid)? Should I try to flash a ROM? Any suggested ROMs? How do I go about flashing a ROM? Move it to SD Card and go into recovery but then what?

Don't put unrevoke on your sd card. You have to do it on your PC. PLEASE MAKE A NANDROID!!! I CAN STRESS THAT ENOUGH!!! As far as Rom's try Myn's, is the best Rom right now.

If you have S-OFF you are rooted, now you just need to decide if you want to use a custom ROM or keep the stock one.

i'm not sure you absolutely get rooting. once you are rooted, you can SWITCH roms easily and safely. but, in order to do this, you need to install a custom recovery and a rooted rom. in the earlier days, devs would compile rooted roms from scratch, but sprint lovers is just a rooted rom with minor improvements. just root and then change roms.

Alright I rooted it successfully, flashed a ROM successfully, and then tried it out. Now I would like to try another one. I put the new ROM on the SDCard and now I am wondering what I have to wipe in clockwork recovery. I went into recovery and I have wiped cache partition, wiped data/factory reset, and wiped dalvik cache. Now do I just go ahead and "install zip from sdcard"?

Yes, going from ROM to ROM wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik and flash as normal. Should be good.
Always make backups. I advise you to change your Recovery to Amon Ra's. This will allow you to make backups of your "RSA Keys." This is important for 4G / WiMax.
Once you've changed recoveries, should you even choose to (don't HAVE to), make a backup with that one. Backups from Clockwork will not work with Amon's recovery, from what I've heard. Maybe there is a way from last I heard, but not sure. So when that's done, you can put those clockwork backups on your computer or delete them. Only after making sure you're sitting fine.
Either way, establish backups (I have a stock rooted backup, confirmed working CURRENT ROM as well as taking one before doing something drastic. JIC ) and then start flashing. Try to enjoy yourself.
edit: toss those backups somewhere safe IE computer / ext hdd etc

Hey guy also a bit of a noob here when it comes to the Evo, I rooted my incredible and it worked fine but I am worried a bit more about this phone cause its a work phone. First I was wondering does 4g work with any of the custom roms? I see that Cryogen just came out with an asop rom that seems to work with 4g but I am wondering do the sense based roms work with 4g? Also I see something about wimax keys what are they and what happens if I lose them.

4g works with all ota-based roms (minus the serious exeptions of course). rsa keys are the acutal keys that say "this phone is authorized to use the sprint 4g network". they are matched with hardware, so if you lose them, you cant ever get them back. even sprint cant. the easiest way to prevent this is to not use clockworkmod (i think its safe now) and to back up your keys. niether of these are very hard.

Ok thanks so I just use unrevoked to root the phone and then do a first time nandroid backup and I should be good to go? Then I can do S-off if I want?
Also how hard right now is it to put the phone back to stock if something strange should happen? Want to make sure I get to use my 7 buck a month insurance if I have something go wrong with the phone.

Stuck in bootloop

Hello,
Today I attempted to root my HTC Desire. I used this site ( youtube.com/watch?v=kvg0i8in96M ) to do so.
I installed several programs that required SU access to check if the rooting was succesful.
I downloaded SystemAppRemover to remove some of the originally installed pieces of software. Unfortunately that didn’t work out too well: some of the buttons on the Phone aren’t responding anymore. So I figured, let’s turn off the Phone and turn it back on.
Then the next program revealed itself: the Phone wont boot, its trapped in the booting proces. I read elsewhere online that I should try to revert to the original firmware, but I have no idea how to do that.
Can anybody advice on this please? I used android 2.3 before.

First backup is for saving a lot of troubles, like this one... Was it not worth to make it? You can flash any custom ROM or you can flash ruu-see bortak guide from stickies I'm on the phone limitation of resources ATM

I see that you're running Runnymede 5.0.3. Looking through the ROM's thread, i've found that it requires that you have an EXT partition on the SD card and that your phone is S-OFF, both of which, i believe, your phone lacks. That might be the reason why it's stuck at the bootscreen.

Before installing ANY ROM, please read its thread carefully. Some ROMs require various types and sizes of EXT partitions, others require different HBOOTS etc. If you don't follow the instructions properly, you will get bootloops.
From my understanding, you are now running the stock HBOOT (250 MB of /system space). If your phone is network-free (unbranded), you should download the latest 2.2 stock RUU from HTC, install it on your phone and that'll solve all of your problems (use Search). You can root/S-OFF afterwards and install any ROM that your heart desires (making sure you follow instructions, this time).

If you read his first post and watched video, he is s-off with stock hboot as he used revolutionary to get root... i think he is missing only ext4 partition and touch recovery

First off. ALways do a Nandroid backup from within recovery. This would have given you the option to restore your original rom,"with S-Off".

Why do you want to format ALL of your partitions to EXT4? You phone needs a FAT32-partition as well.
So if the ROM you flashed or you want to flash needs an EXT4-partition, backup all important data on your SD card, boot into recovery and partition your SD card with FAT32-partition plus an EXT4-partition with 1 GB (I recommend 1 GB because it will be compatible with nearly every ROM you find here) and copy all data back on FAT32-partition.
You can do this operation either in recovery (worked always well for me) or with GParted. Just do not use software like MiniTool Partition Wizard or any other Windows software which "deals" with EXT-partitions, because these types are Linux-partition-types and I would not trust Windows there if you want to have the rewards of your SD card.
In Q&A you can and will find a very good noob guide which will help you a lot:

This is just not true. Recovery is an easy and very good way to partition your SD card and will work well nearly every time. I cannot remember any partitioning errors (can you name at least one anyway?) or rather problems caused by partition with recovery. As far as I remember, the causes were always crap software like Rom Manager or MiniTool Partition Wizard or something like that.

Apologies, what i should have said was," could possibly cause problems ". I have occasionally had problems with some fussy roms boot-looping after installation, but after reformatting in Gparted, they have worked," this could be coincidence though ". I fully agree with you on the likes of Rom Manager and MiniTools.

What hboot do you have? Still the same as first post? Post info from hboot/fastboot, why did you run RUU?

Personally I wouldn't recommend anything other than cwm 2.5.0.7 or amonRA 2.0.1 depending on erase size to a newbie

It should have... i remember there was conversation between you and rastaman if im right... but since new version came out 1.0.3.5, i was using 1.0.3.4 without any problem then I changed over to 4ext... I can't be 100% it was fixed... Can you have a look please?

I haven't recommended 4ext to anyone yet, Ive still been recommending what I mentioned, but Ive been using it solidly for a good few weeks now and I think I am about ready to start recommending it...

adb and fastboot are 2 totally different things. It just happens that they both are command line and used to communicate with your android phone. The similarity ends there.

[Q] Ways of flashing custom rom. How to install cyanongenMod.

I'm using a GSM HTC Desire I bought a year ago. Its currently running froyo 2.2. I've used unrevoked to root my phone and did the s-off produce using alpharev a while ago. I'm now trying to flash a custom rom onto it. I read through a couple of tutorials and found out 2 ways to do it. One is to install ROM manager but I have to do a "flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in the software which I don't know if I should do. Another is to download the custom rom and install it through recovery mode by holding on power and volume down.... Is there a difference?
Also reading CyanongenMod installation procedures "3. Update your radio! New radio from HTC 2.2+ roms is required (Desire Radio Thread)." came up and I don't if I need to do this.

Personally IMO i would never use ROM manager. I would upgrade your recovery to '4EXT recovery touch' first, search the forum for the guide, its simple enough.
You should also partition your memory card so it has an EXT partition on it. I would recommend using Gparted to partition the sd.
IMO i would leave the radio update for now.
Search for a suitable ROM to flash, download it, put it on your SD card, go into recovery and flash.
There are loads of guides in the forum just look and follow step by step, if you do everything completely to the guides you will not have a problem.

Hi! The easiest way to install a new ROM it's by ROM manager. You can use the recovery mode also, but it's more complicated.
You can flash your recovery whitout any problem.
ALWAYS remember to make a nandroid backup before installing a ROM in case anything goes wrong.
You should also wipe data, cache and dalvik.
After installing a new ROM, use ROM managers or recovery to make à sd-ext partitions (more space for apps)

Take your advice and go somewhere else. ROM Manager both sucks and blows and just causes problems. The only "good" use it does have is the ability to download ROM's straight to your phone. Otherwise steer clear.

Do not use ROM manager to make backups. Can just cause problems as already stated. Don't be lazy and do it yourself via recovery, now with 4EXT touch it's easier and simpler than ever.

Yes. Go and flash manually. Rom manager is just a middle man that screws up the process. Dont ever use it at least for Desire coz it really doesnt play well with it. Even after you successfully flashed cyanogenmod.

Root...and now?!

Before i start, just like to say that I spent almost two days to read almost all posts related to my phone, but still feel I need your help.
Ok then:
I own an HTC Desire and recently asked an informatic friend to root my phone, mainly for two reasons:
- In order to install more applications, since it was always with the notification of "low memory space" and still had lots of applications to install and,
- To be able to customize, since I see many colleagues with images and icons very beautiful and I'd like to have that
After the root done, my friend installed the ROM CyanogenMod 7.0.1
I was very happy the phone came to my hands, but even before i start to install the applications i noticed that only had about 70MB free space, and then after installing some, quickly came to 30Mb, even using the App2SD. Frankly it seems to me that this program is working exactly the same way it was before the root. One part goes to the SD but another part is the internal memory. I thought with the root, the entire application would go to the SD.
I also noticed that either the cache or system applications were also in the internal memory and not in SD. So i suspect that something is lacking because something is not right.
Another question I have, and probably can be related, is that applications that came in were the Rom Manager and Superuser. However, if you open the Superuser does not appear nothing, not on the page of the application or the registration page. Do not know if it's normal.
As for the rom manager, any action that I want to do such as Install Rom from SD card, or Download Rom or Check for Rom Updates, or Partition SD Card always shows me the message "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing. Install the Recovery Manager through Rom first " followed by the option Install or Cancel. Has im not an expert, i decided not to install and listen to your help first. What is wrong? what should I do?

1. Search for SD partition guide, a2sd/a2sd+/data2ext guide, Hboot flashing guide, recovery flashing guide, rom flashing guide (in no particular order, get them all), learn and figure out what these are. So before you take a step, you know the risk.
2. Maybe your Desire got RMD Recovery on the recovery partition after rooted. So with your finishing "1." , you should know how to get a ClockworkMod Recovery.
Bad english, hope you know what I try to tell. Learn those and you'll know how to get more ram.

The rooting process installs Superuser on your phone system partition. Superuser is the app that grants root permissions to other apps. Opening it will just show you which apps have been granted root priveledges which I am guessing are none so far.
Do not use ROM manager with the desire it will cause all kinds of problems. You should already have a custom recovery installed when it was rooted.
To get more space for apps you need to install a ROM that supports A2SD+ (not the same as Froyo A2SD) and partition your sd card. ROMs available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328 There is a guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 Follow steps 5 to 7 (you have done 1 to 4 already). Alternatively you could change the phone internal partitions in conjunction with an appropriate ROM but that is more complicated.

How can i know that?!

Shut down phone, then hold vol down and press power - this will take you to bootloader screen. Navigate using vol up/down to Recovery and press power to select - this should take you into custom recovery.
Edit: do you know how your mate rooted your phone? Post the details shown on bootloader screen, and what your original hboot version and software version is if you know.

And since it was your "friend" that put your phone in that state, it wouldn't be bad to ask him first for help and explain to you what he did.

Bortak, why that attitud?
If you read my 1st sentence i already told that i spent a lot of time reading this forum, but unfortunatly i dont have technical knowledge so im affraid of doing something wrong.
You are not obliged to help but if you spent some of your precious time posting here, wasnt it better if you helped instead of criticizing? Isn't that the objective of forums?
Fortunatly there are some guys that do that.

Oh dear, I'll help you move on from this forum.
You have now S-OFF'd your device, meaning you can now manipulate any data that is saved onto your nand (layman's terms: built in) memory.
If you want to do further change, such as changing the operating system on your device, you need to flash a custom recovery. There is a tutorial on my guide on how to do so. Do not ask me which one to flash, remember a recovery is a recovery is a recovery is a recovery - they ALL do the same thing, some may have different features than others.
Once you have flashed recovery backup your ROM.
There are a few different variations of Android, here are A FEW you can choose from, I just picked the first one that picked the criteria.
Sense 2.0/2.1
Sense 3.0/3.5
Stock AOSP Gingerbread
Customised AOSP Gingerbread
MIUI AOSP Gingerbread
AOSP ICS (UNSTABLE)
Once you've decided what ROM you would like to choose, read the forum thread, and find out what HBOOT you need from www.alpharev.io (make sure to check the md5 before flashing, there's a tool that does this for you in resources on my guide). And flash the hboot (tutorial on my guide).
A lot of ROMs also support A2SD. For this you need to have a EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Use Gparted to make a 1024mb EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Make sure to back it up beforehand as it will be wiped.
Put the ROM on your sd-card, boot into recovery.
In recovery do a full wipe of boot, system, data, cache and dalvik cache.
Flash the ROM you wanted to use.
reboot.
That's as much help as you'll get from anyone here.

Well, best way to gain some knowledge is a) to read and b) to try out different things. So please, stop complaining and just do it! Most of us learned how to do things by doing them. And that's also the reason why most newbies get some troll posts when asking things.
This post is not meant to insult you, but just to give some advice. There are very few states where your phone will be totally unusable, so just give it a try.

Looks like you haven't got a custom recovery flashed. If you are going to use ClockWorkRecovery then next time when it asks you to flash CMW recovery say Yes and follow the instructions. Personally, I prefer 4EXT recovery (you can search for it in Google play store). But you need a custom recovery on your rooted phone before you can start tinkering with it.

you're rocketing your way to 10 posts very quickly...spreading a little bad advice along the way
- you need to be s-off before you can start tinkering with recovery
- also, he has already been advised correctly not to use ROM manager at all...

1.Just install 4ext app from Google Play
2.Flash with it 4ext recovery, boot into recovery and do a backup of your current rom
4.download the customrom zip of your choice.
3.download the required hboot and flash it.
5.boot from the 4ext app into recovery do a full wipe
6. go to install zip from sd ( if needes toggle veryfication off before)
7.Reboot
8. finish
7.Have fun

If i recall correctly, the timeline i followed was
stock rom
got my self root and custom recovery (clockwork) ( unrevoked.com)
custom rom, on stock hboot
s-off, custom hboot, custom rom with more space for data (alpharev.nl)
so a custom recovery without s-off is possible

Upgrade ClockworkMod Recovery

Hi,
I rooted my Desire well over a year ago using Unrevoked. Since then I have only ever tried new ROM's out. I've never updated anything. Recently with Android 4.0, I've noticed I'm only able to install 4/5 apps before running out of space. This has become a problem and I really want to get a2sd working.
I've seen in the latest versions of ClockworkMod Recovery they have an option to format the SD card. This isn't available in my old version 2.5.0.7. I've been searching for a tutorial to walk me through upgrading ClockworkMod Recovery. I'm using Mac OSX Lion and any fastboot guides are using Windows.
Can anyone know in the know point me in the right direction to get started?

Grab 4ext recovery updater and flash 4ext recovery, it far batter then CWM.

as above, 4ext is better.
backup your sd card to computer before partitioning. a2sd setup will depend on ROM, instructions should be in first post.
just in case, because you haven't mentioned it, you need s-off before you can change recovery. revolutionary is easiest method. guide here.

Another option would be, if you want to stay at ClockworkMod Recovery, to just download an app called "ROM Manager" from Play Store. There you can update the recovery without S-OFF. For me it worked like a charm.

no ignore this please. do not use rom manager, has been known to cause more problems with this phone (myself included when i didn't know).
@andrhitm, i recommend you uninstall it. also the app may make it look like you have upgraded recovery, but pretty sure it hasn't, as i'm almost certain that this requires s-off.

Multiple issues reported through using of Rom Manager.

Rom manager is the leading cause of bad breath for HTC Desire users so stay away from it.

Ok thanks - that's new information for me. I've never had any (obvious) issues with this app but i won't use it anymore if it really causes such probs.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going down the revolutionary route. I'm trying to run the revolutionary program, it reboots my phone into HBOOT and hangs saying "waiting for fastboot..." Any ideas why I'm getting blocked a this stage?

Did you install drivers you need and uninstall PC suite?

I'm trying to this on Ubuntu 12.04, I also have access to a Mac. I don't have access to Windows.
I haven't got HTC Sync installed, which drivers do I need to install? I've read about getting the fastboot and Android SDK installed. I have the fastboot executable on my path, but that doesn't seem to help.

like nlooooo says u need fastboot drivers
