[MOD] Homemade POGO pin Car Dock - HTC One X

Hi guys,
Using information (and inspiration) found here on XDA I decided to build my own Pogo Pin Car Dock for HOX.
Details about how the pins work you can find here so I won't get into details but I'll give you some details about the tools and components I used (actually a friend of mine did the assembly).
If you buy everything of the shelf you can make it with very little $$ (obviously not using the parts I used) but I already had everything I needed (except the pins) laying around so I used an car dock fom my old HTC Desire (I tried to sell it in pristine condition but nobody bought it for ~25% the price I paid) and flip case dedicated for HOX that I don't use (I hate to use this kind of case but I did not know that when I bought it). I bought the pins from here and I had a 10kOhm resistor from somewhere else (you can find them virtually everywhere).
Here are some pictures:

In order to easily put the phone in and get it out I had to cut some corners (literally). Now, I can actually easily slide the phone in with one hand. It's not very pretty with all the cutting (I had to cut the front leather lid and magnetic clip too) but IT WORKS!!
One small problem (ok, not that small) is the fact that using any navigation software (so screen always on, brightness to max, GPS ON) still drops the battery level, not very fast but it's still dropping (I had BT and DATA on also, but I don't think this will help much). This happens because apparently there is no way you could trigger full charging using the POGO pins so it's limited to 500mah (USB charging).
I'm happy to answer your questions if something it's not clear.
P.S. all photos are made with my HOX so there's no picture with the phone in the holder (I can make a high quality one if anyone is curios)
P.P.S. excuse any grammar mistakes, I'm not a native English speaker (and I wrote this in a rush)

U did an excelent job buddy. congrats XD XD

Pretty good, tempted to do one for my bedside cabinet....

Looks great. I was going to do something similar myself but once I realised that pogo pins can only be used for USB charge rate (500ma) I ended up just going for a USB type dock from eBay for just $20. No glory from having it homemade but allot quicker and easier as well as full rate charge (750ma) .

Nice job mate! It would be very nice if HTC or other accessory manufacturer could make an extended battery and external card reader using the pogo pins. Also any other pogo pin accessories. ......
Sent witH desire from OneX

Cheers mate
From my ONE X in your face!

thats is soo beautiful!

At least you dont get scratches like i have with original car dock...
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Premium HD app

Speaking of scratches, in order to prevent the pins from scratching the phone I always mount the phone in the upper side first (the right side if the dock is in portrait mode) and then I force the bottom part (left side) into place. This is the recommend method for all hard cases given the fact that the phone has volume rockers on the right side.

Hi
Good job first of all
I want to make something similar, but a a desktop version and I want to make it from the original phone box.
I acquired some bigger pins, but having a hard time alining them the proper way.
Did you also buy receptacles or anything like that for the one you linked?
Did you make the small board for them yourself?

Nope, I just bought the pins and I used a piece of circuit board to mount them.
Nope, I friend helped me with manufacturing. I like making stuff (and I'm handy) but I did not had the right tools.
From what I remember there are exactly 4mm between the pins (from center to center of pins). So you need to draw a straight line on a circuit board a make 5 points at 4mm distance (you only need to drill 3 holes: 1,4,5). The hole size should match the diameter of your pins.
Given the fact that HOX has a faulty behavior in dock mode (check this thread) I advise you to use only the charging pins (1&5).

Great work!!!
Mine is a bit more simple. I just bought the standard passive holder of Brodit and a left angle micro USB cable type A (to standard USB 2.0-A for vehicle input USB charger). Type A normally doesn't fit, because the plug is slightly different, but unlike type B (that has just pin 5 grounded) a type A cable also has pin 4 grounded. If you connect a USB cable with pin 4 grounded an HTC device switches to car mode (this is how the original D110 works). The only thing to do is make the type A plug fit in our standard plug B port. Few minutes with a nail file will do the trick!
Alternatively you could also use a micro USB type B cable (like the one that comes with the device) and bridge pin 4 and 5.
Cheers!

Car Dock Connected notification

I installed the car dock app from the nexus on my desire a while ago. Today as I was going out I plugged my desire into my 9.99 mobile fun car charger / holder, like normal. However this time I didn't plug the micro USB in enough and a notification appear that said it had been connected to a car dock and it launched the car dock app and started charging.
I thought that the nexus one had metal terminals that told it when it was plugged into the home dock or car dock. I am wondering if the desire has something in the micro USB port that has the ability to do the same.
Can you get it to do it again??
It might be detecting something on the ID pin on the micro usb, if it is we may be able to modify chargers to enable dock mode
On the droid, it's simply a magnet in the car dock that tells the phone where it is, maybe it's the same here?
Nope, tested with a magnet. As the OP said it started when he plugged the charger in its more than likely the ID pin. We just need to find what the trigger was on the ID pin.
I can pretty much get it to do it on demand yes.
I saw it pop up while I was driving and then stopped to see if I could get it to do it again. Wiggled the usb a bit and sure enough the notification came up.
I suspect from some things I've read that HTC are releasing a dock for the Desire, I would hope that this notification message goes some way to confirming this.
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/trailblazer-universal-car-charger-and-holder-p22954.htm >> This is the charger if any one is interested.
I'll try and get a screenshot some time over the weekend too.
Which cable are you using to connect from the charger to the desire?
The standard desire cable or one that comes with the car charger?
Can you get the notification with the standard cable too?
(sorry for the amount of Q's but i'm interested in getting this working for my phone too, and i'm sure others will be aswell!)
Hi, this is an adjacent-related post, for those seeking a car dock. I like how the dock illustrated in this thread is a general purpose car mount vs. all the "customized for one particular phone" types which I think are overkill and not very versatile.
The one you show here is neat because it's attached right to the cigarette plug.

But depending on your car's interior layout, that could place your device really far from your line of sight... especially if you want to use the Desire for google maps or turn by turn directions.
I just want to show another example of a different type of auto mount, though there are hundreds of them. In USA, in state of California, we are prohibited from having those windshield mounts that use a suction to attach the phone holder. So a variety of Dashboard Mounts emerged. This, to me, is the best. It is a bit more expensive than others, but to me the value is there in total functionality and versatility....
The method of attachment is this weighted "plate", and it attaches to your dash by way of strong double sided tape or strong velcro. The weight is focused on the back side of the platform. The pltform is shiny smooth like glass, but plastic, and a suction mount attaches to it, and it is super strong, does not come apart, unless you release it to reposition.
The arms adjust in various ways and a swivel head allows you to angle the device so that it optimally faces you at the correct height and angle so there's no reflection.
It is Universal, so it'll mount just about any smartphone, and it's bottom "feet" slide either side to account for connector locations. The gripper is strong, but soft on the phone, and has minimal side contact, thus enabling volume controls to be accessed. And the whole thing rotates to horizontal positioning with a twist, while you're driving, and it's rock solid, nothing to unscrew, it just is designed really well so that it can be easily adjusted from vertical to horizontal display position.
I am just saying all this because I have used this same mount for my T-Mobile Wing, my HTC Hero, and now my HTC Desire, and all have worked perfectly and flawlessly, with total positioning control.
To me there are times and places where getting cheapest of anything is a good call. But when you envision yourself driving, and using google maps, or the phone, of switching music to next song, or, dare I say it, viewing an incoming SMS (not sending one), you cannot take your eye off the road not even for a split second. To me this is an example of where an extra $10 or extra $15 is well worth the cost of your life -- to give you the full extended capability of using your DESIRE in the car... where some of us spend a lot of time.
So, here are some pictures -- from 2 years ago with my WING... so, just to emphasize, it's constructed well too, and will last many years and not lose its rigidity of placing the phone exactly where you want it. That was important to me.
**
It looks like it is too expensive to ship these internationally from USA, but maybe you can find similar types of dash mounts in Europe.
The USA accessory provider is Arkon - here: http://www.arkon.com/iPhone_Car_Mount.php
hope this is of use
It's the ID pin that needs to be connected to the ground pin as indicated here:

[MOD][PROJECT] Pogo Charging Dock

I didn't want to clog/hijack THIS THREAD but the pin info and idea was very helpful. After waiting and waiting and waiting for official word of a charging dock that utilizes the pogo pins on the side, I've given up hope. And lets face it if you kill the usb port on this thing "you're screwed". so I really wanted to reduce my usb port usage and utilize a feature that comes with the device.

My material list is 8 screws, 46 gauge guitar string, a strip of 1/2" playwood that happened to be ripped down to 2 1/2" in my garage, usb cable, piece of flat 1/8" thick plastic and a tiny bit of solder. The way that I screwed/bent the piece of guitar string gives the perfect amount of spring so that when the device is set both are compressed and make contact with the side of the device.
This was very spur of the moment and took me a half hour to build. And it works brilliantly. Yes I could have spent more time on design and material type and getting proper pogo pins. But I'm lazy and intent of this thread is spark ideas in other peoples heads. So now this masterpiece lives on my nightstand and I drop my galnex in at night and wake up to a full charge in the morning without having to use the usb port.
**edit** The pic of the lockscreen is in landscape using the Team Kang AOKP rom.
good day.
THIS is what I love to see here. Ingenuity. Looks good to me. I am thinking of putting some docks together here this weekend. One for the nightstand and one for the office.

VERY awesome work. I love some hacked together ingenuity for sure, haha. I've had the car and desktop dock on order from Clove since December but I think I'll be cancelling the orders fairly soon and working up something on my own.
MacGyver would be proud
Terminators run on Android
Very nice!
Love it, nice work. Like you said, you could get some cheap pogo pins off digikey, but I like the character of your design.
Going to have to try this over the weekend. What is the third pin for on the phone?

This is a decent, and probably relevant, read speculating on the function of the third pin on the Nexus One: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=631508
I love this, but I got some questions I'd like answered before attempting this.
1.For those of us without guitar string, would a paper clip bent into proper shape work well too?
2. What cable is that, that you were using just a power cord or was that usb?
3. You said it just sits on your night stand so does that mean you cant transfer data to your computer?
Also a video just going over it more or perhaps some more pics of the back there would be nice (at least for me) to see what is screwed around the screw.

1. no idea, sorry. Check out the pogo pins though.
2. Thats a power cable, a usb would have a wire for data.
3. the pins don't transfer any information (well... the middle one does, but not anything useful to a pc) so transferring stuff would be impossible. (but thats what wifi is for)
This is beautiful and ugly at the same time.
One thing I would recommend is cutting out an area at the bottom of the phone so that you COULD attach a USB, OTG, or MHL cable if need-be. Perhaps that side of the dock could be shaped like a B, or notched to also allow access to the headphone port.
I would also maybe split out the power connection to a microUSB port to power MHL or other accessories. Or maybe just wire up a fullsize female USB to power another unit such as a bluetooth headset or whatever. It just would be nice to have a powered USB port just in case.
To the guy above, sure it may not look perfect but a coat of paint would spruce it up very well.
Overall A+
I might try my hand at something like this. I'm a cheap ass when it comes to buying crap for phones (since I go through them often). I have all the materials already with the exception of spare guitar strings but the paperclip idea sounds great and can be bent to size. I have some Poplar wood in my basement that would even look good with a heavy clear coat.

I am thinking of attempting this as well. Except I dont have the wood to spare for this, so I am trying to look for a generic stand on ebay that would be possible to modify to fit at the least the pogo pins and at the most everything you mentioned. Because it would be a MHL adapter built in and ready to go.
Nice Job! Very creative use of guitar strings in lieu of pogo pins! I might have to try something like this...

I'm looking for something generic too, something that came to my mind was some kind of business card holder. Just a thought I'd throw out there.

DUCT TAPE! (j/k) Gorrilla glue/super glue will work if you drill a small enough of a hole.
Or even some kind of poxy to hold it there. I might have to run to the Lego Store at the Mall of America to go buy me some Legos to build me a stand!

Lol! Soo tempting to make a duct tape stand HA! I so totally need to restring my guitar and I already have some new strings.... (yells at wife) HONEY WHERE'S THE DUCT TAPE!!
For those looking for generic stands, I saw some on ebay that were just acrylic kinda in an "S" shape sort of deal that looked like could hold the nexus fully and was pretty modifiable.
Although than running a particular rom, has anyone found a way to get the GNex in to landscape mode while on a dock? I did a quick search and didn't find anything. On my D1 I used a magnet placed in a particular spot to force it into dock mode.

[DIY] Galaxy Note Dock under $15

Hi All,
As Promised I am putting a little a guide here.
Any Suggestion, Question, curse words keep in Thread only.
This MOD is not hard anyway. So here we go.
Sometimes ago I posted THIS, Its a nice little Dock for about $7.
Only Down side is it dosent do MHL or USB OTG. The Reason is pin4 and pin5 are shorted together. But unfortunately there is no way just to use one extra wire and solder it a two ends.
So I boutht THIS, Its true Micro USB cable Extension for about $5.
** You can use this Guide to MOD any DOCK to make it work with your MHL or USB OTG cable.
All You have to do is, Open the Dock (There are 6 screws in the bottom of Dock) take the existing micro USB Male to Female extension out and replace it with the Motorola SKN6258.
I have used THIS dock for this tutorial. But you can MOD almost any Dock this way.
1. Unscrew the Dock from bottom. To do that you have to peel off the Rubber Pad stick to the bottom. Do it little Slowly so you can stick back the Rubber Pad.

}
2. Take the 3 pieces apart and take off the Micro USB male to female part. Which is almost useless. And also remove the part shown in Circle.
3. Take the Bottom piece and using Knife cut the Groves as Shown for the Back Female Micro USB Connector.
4. Now Take the Motorola Micro USB Extension Cable and remove the Protective Plastic Ends.
To do this Cut along the line where two part are stick together. Please refer to the pics below.
And also remove the Black outer cover around the wires. You can do this later too but this gives more flexibility while working.
5.This is the ONLY HARD PART. Be very careful and remove the WHITE plastic part around Female USB connector PCB covering the wires soldered to PCB. Please be Very patient
while doing this. Use the sharper blade(The Sharper the Safer). Removing all the plastic really helps putting it in place with bottom of the Dock.
Also as shown in the pictures, trim the plastic Under and on Both Sides of Female Micro USB Connector so it fits perfect in the place.(See pictures)
Otherwise it will not align with bottom edge.
6. Be little Extra Careful. As you can see in Pic 1 our new Male Connector is thicker and little shorter compare to the original Connector came with Dock.
So Using pliers we are going to take the Metal Housing around the Male Micro USB. This will lessen the thickness of the end so we can slide it easily
into existing housing without further modifications.
7. Cut some rubber pads to keep things in place. Use the two tiny pieces as shown in picture to place it around Male Micro USB Connector.
8. We almost there. Now as show in pic below you have to make another cut to make space for Male connector to fit right. Also Cut a little piece of rubber pad
to put in that groove to give cushion as shown. Also remove the little T like plastic under the tiny female connector Cover,
9. Put Everything in place and Carefully close the dock. Put couple of screws and check to see everything works as it should.
10. In my case I had to open the Dock again and trim the Front Part of Female Micro USB connector. Because if you have MHL or Micro USB cable with short length Connector
it dosent stay connected in the Dock. And this way removing unnecessary plastic housing, you can connect the cables firmly. Refer to pics below for better understanding.
The Only Reason Stock Dock dosent work is pin4 and pin5 are shorted together.
And there is no way to use an extra wire because they are shortened right on the tiny PCB attached to both the Ends.
Enjoy your New MHL and USB OTG compatible Dock.
ALSO PLEASE POST YOUR EXPERIENCE/ SUGGESTIONS OR JUT A BUMP !
the guide is ready to go guys.
with this we can use hdmi cable and other perfectly with no lag no bug no deconnection ?

It dose not change anything as far as the appearance of dock. However if you have noticed blinking LED on top behind the phone, that will not be there.
And as far as performance is concerned as long as you use Motorola SKN6258A cable, you should not have any problem at all.

You may encounter trouble because of the One's all-metal body. Your case will need to completely isolate the coil from the body for this to work, if memory serves me right. Admittedly, it is aluminum, so I'm not altogether certain it will be an issue.

I would really like to see something like this. A couple of challenges I think would be keeping the plug area on the bottom to as thin as possible and second would be to keep the case as thin and small as possible.
I wish you luck!

Post pics of it on the phone and let us know what kind of charger your using. It looks like you could rip off that coil and place it in any case if it's thin .
Definitely report on results. I tried to make something like this for my One XL, and while it worked as far as charging went, it was unpredictable and seemed to make the phone unstable, though I could never figure out why. I suspect it's not just the charging current but that the phone's charging circuits and drivers need to be tuned for wireless.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I'd not seen that, but it looks like just what I'd like to try and fit between my phone and case. The lack of wireless charging was the biggest reason I held off switching from my DNA to the One. I love the convenience of just plopping my phone on the orb charger during the day. The "type b" info is a big help. Much appreciated!

I saw them but they were more expensive than the one I picked up from ebay and still come from China
they are supposedly 750mA so should be a bit quicker to charge than the 500mA one I picked up
I just received this

Works good, put it between my hardshell-case and the phone. Looks like the amazon-solution above is roughly the same
edit: Yeah, same as mentioned a few posts above... sorry for that. So, I can at least second that it fits quite well and doesn´t stick out much on the USB-Port
any idea how to use these universal receivers on my THL W8S?
my camera and my micro-usb port are in the same side, so the wire will cover my camera.
does anyone knows about an item that has longer wire so i can bend it around my camera?
this may not sound like the most logical idea, but isn't it possible to somehow use NFC for wireless charging, since NFC is about near field communication after all?

Nfc doesn't connect to the battery of the phone and the coil is not inductive as it is a derivative of close range rfid
A quick tip for the add on qi pads with the HTC one, as the USB is not in the middle you can't position the pad straight up or the curved back makes it hard to get a connection. Put it on a bit of a diagonal so the pad is in the centre of the back

A lot of cool, useful information in this thread. Thanks everyone!

Review of Smiley and Mini-strap usb cables w/lots of pics!

This is a review of Smiley Luminescence usb cable: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/Smi...I9300-S4-I9500-N7100-HTC-Sony-White-MCH-636B/ and Mini-digital Strap usb cable: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/3-i...r-Samsung-Sony-HTC-Etc.-Orange-Strap-CR-267A/
Since I'm on a roll with reviews from my recent tvc-mall order, here is another unique one you all might appreciate and enjoy! A typical usb to micro-usb cable is a boring piece of wire, nothing to get excited about. It took me awhile to search and to find something unique and fun to share with everybody. And for about $1 plus change - it's also a great value from tvc-mall.
First one is a Smiley cable. Just one look at it and you realize where the name came from. Both usb and micro-usb connectors have a light-up embedded smiley faces on one side and a round dot on another side. It looks super cool and highly visible in the dark. So once you have usb side connected to wall or car charger, both ends light-up and you will not have any problem finding your phone's micro-usb port to connect the other side of the cable in the dark. Cable itself is a flat noodle design. Feels and looks very durable, and comes in a variety of close to a dozen of different colors. One thing I do have to mention, I checked it with Galaxy Charging current app, and found that you will not be able to get full 2A charging speed. Perhaps there is some loss with current being used to light up smiley faces or wires being thinner, but honestly for $1.19 this is going to be the coolest charging/data cable in your collection.
Here is how it looks.

The other cable is a very short (a total of 4" end-to-end) multi-functional charging/data transfer cable which is equally unique. When you are traveling or on the go, dragging a spool of long cable often is not preferable. Finding the shortest cable is also a challenge because short cables are not as durable and often will not allow full speed charging. This one hits a mark in every aspect. It has a flat noodle design, dust caps on both of the usb and micro-usb connectors, and I confirmed it can charge your Note 2 at full 2A current!!! As a bonus, it has a unique built-in micro-sd card reader. The full usb connector has pins on both sides with one side supposedly being able to read data from micro-sd. OK, I tried it and even demonstrated in my pictures. I was NOT able to read micro-sd card, that didn't work for me. But who cares! For $1.32 you are getting one of the shortest and coolest looking charging and data cables which can take a full advantage of 2A charging. It even comes in 3 different color combinations. Definitely happy with this one as well, been using it with my extended battery for a few days now - very convenient to eliminate mess of long usb cables.
The pictures are below.

Too bad that the card reader aspect didn't work for you, perhaps the ones others have received may work. I guess you could use it as a way of storing/transporting additional micro-sd cards with you.
how long does it take to ship from this website?

Guess what? I ordered and just received 2 more of these mini-strap cables and actually one reads micro-sd without a problem! So let's see, 1 out of 3 works Listen, for $1.32 it works just as a cable and considering you can put it on your keychain (that lanyard cap part latches on with two little hooks securely). So, I would recommend for anybody if you want to try your luck with it's built-in micro-sd card reader to order 3 of those lol!!!! At least that was my luck...

I have ordered from them in the past both using standard cheapest method and once with DHL upgrade. DHL upgrade is a bit pricey but will take you 3 days to get from China to US (I'm not kidding). Regular cheapest shipping is the usual 2 weeks you get with any ebay purchase. Because of my order history and my online write ups about their products - I get complimentary DHL upgrades One thing for sure, any time I get something which doesn't work they always credit back the price to my account.
Btw, I got a few tiny speakers from them, one bt and another one just with external aux connection, both have micro-sd card slot to turn it into little mp3 player - just mind blowing sound. Expect reviews soon!
