I installed the car dock app from the nexus on my desire a while ago. Today as I was going out I plugged my desire into my 9.99 mobile fun car charger / holder, like normal. However this time I didn't plug the micro USB in enough and a notification appear that said it had been connected to a car dock and it launched the car dock app and started charging.
I thought that the nexus one had metal terminals that told it when it was plugged into the home dock or car dock. I am wondering if the desire has something in the micro USB port that has the ability to do the same.
Can you get it to do it again??
It might be detecting something on the ID pin on the micro usb, if it is we may be able to modify chargers to enable dock mode
On the droid, it's simply a magnet in the car dock that tells the phone where it is, maybe it's the same here?
Nope, tested with a magnet. As the OP said it started when he plugged the charger in its more than likely the ID pin. We just need to find what the trigger was on the ID pin.
I can pretty much get it to do it on demand yes.
I saw it pop up while I was driving and then stopped to see if I could get it to do it again. Wiggled the usb a bit and sure enough the notification came up.
I suspect from some things I've read that HTC are releasing a dock for the Desire, I would hope that this notification message goes some way to confirming this.
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/trailblazer-universal-car-charger-and-holder-p22954.htm >> This is the charger if any one is interested.
I'll try and get a screenshot some time over the weekend too.
Which cable are you using to connect from the charger to the desire?
The standard desire cable or one that comes with the car charger?
Can you get the notification with the standard cable too?
(sorry for the amount of Q's but i'm interested in getting this working for my phone too, and i'm sure others will be aswell!)
Hi, this is an adjacent-related post, for those seeking a car dock. I like how the dock illustrated in this thread is a general purpose car mount vs. all the "customized for one particular phone" types which I think are overkill and not very versatile.
The one you show here is neat because it's attached right to the cigarette plug.

But depending on your car's interior layout, that could place your device really far from your line of sight... especially if you want to use the Desire for google maps or turn by turn directions.
I just want to show another example of a different type of auto mount, though there are hundreds of them. In USA, in state of California, we are prohibited from having those windshield mounts that use a suction to attach the phone holder. So a variety of Dashboard Mounts emerged. This, to me, is the best. It is a bit more expensive than others, but to me the value is there in total functionality and versatility....
The method of attachment is this weighted "plate", and it attaches to your dash by way of strong double sided tape or strong velcro. The weight is focused on the back side of the platform. The pltform is shiny smooth like glass, but plastic, and a suction mount attaches to it, and it is super strong, does not come apart, unless you release it to reposition.
The arms adjust in various ways and a swivel head allows you to angle the device so that it optimally faces you at the correct height and angle so there's no reflection.
It is Universal, so it'll mount just about any smartphone, and it's bottom "feet" slide either side to account for connector locations. The gripper is strong, but soft on the phone, and has minimal side contact, thus enabling volume controls to be accessed. And the whole thing rotates to horizontal positioning with a twist, while you're driving, and it's rock solid, nothing to unscrew, it just is designed really well so that it can be easily adjusted from vertical to horizontal display position.
I am just saying all this because I have used this same mount for my T-Mobile Wing, my HTC Hero, and now my HTC Desire, and all have worked perfectly and flawlessly, with total positioning control.
To me there are times and places where getting cheapest of anything is a good call. But when you envision yourself driving, and using google maps, or the phone, of switching music to next song, or, dare I say it, viewing an incoming SMS (not sending one), you cannot take your eye off the road not even for a split second. To me this is an example of where an extra $10 or extra $15 is well worth the cost of your life -- to give you the full extended capability of using your DESIRE in the car... where some of us spend a lot of time.
So, here are some pictures -- from 2 years ago with my WING... so, just to emphasize, it's constructed well too, and will last many years and not lose its rigidity of placing the phone exactly where you want it. That was important to me.
**
It looks like it is too expensive to ship these internationally from USA, but maybe you can find similar types of dash mounts in Europe.
The USA accessory provider is Arkon - here: http://www.arkon.com/iPhone_Car_Mount.php
hope this is of use
It's the ID pin that needs to be connected to the ground pin as indicated here:

On opening the package I was initially quite impressed. Manufactured in Germany, the finish of the plastic components were of a very good quality, no sharp edges, the texture and colour are a very close match to the Universal from O2 (the Exec). The part that grips the Universal itself is a simple spring design. The back edge has 3 small lips that over hang the device but still allow you to open and close the screen. The front is help by two more clips that are also sprung by flexing the plastic. It holds the device quite snugly and only really showed a problem when holding the Universal vertically in landscape, The weight of the Universal caused to it to creep down, spreading the two front sprung clips and allowing the back three clips to work loose. Saying that it never did fall out, even with the serious speed bumps in our street. The cradle has all the usual cut aways for standby, SD, headphones, reset, mini USB, Phone keys, speakers, volume, camera, voice and backlight keys. Even the IR and camera lens are clear. There is a small sticker fixed to the holder warning the user against opening the screen 180 degrees. I tried it and when I did the screen acted as a lever and forced the back of the Universal out of the holder. Adjustment is via twin axis swivel near the base, both with knurled thumb screws to lock it in place. After this there is a telescopic section that clicks into place as it is extended and retracted. Lastly is a full ball joint allowing you to rotate the device from portrait to landscape, again with a locking thumb screw to secure it in position. The suction base did not come off once in the 2 weeks I have used it and the all the thumb screws stayed tight. They also supplied a sticky back cup if you wanted to fix it to a textured surface.
So, overall, a lovely piece of kit and in my humble opinion well worth the money PDAhut are asking for it!

Hi, I'm looking at getting some sort of mount for my Uni, how do you think this compares with another I was looking at at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9714064603&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1 ??
This one has a built in speaker and mic to enhance the onboard versions, the only downside is that the Uni stays in reverse clam position, you can't close and open normally, but I don't see that of much of a problem...
Would appreciate others opinions, esp if anyone has any of them, or similar....
Just bought one, thanks for the link, it looks great.
I bought one too
Hi, newbie here - just bought one of those units to run the TOM TOM from.
Now I have had a real strange one....
There is a little switch on the side which switches from GPS unit charging to XDA charging, trouble is after about 1/2 hour smoke started to appear from the back of the speaker mounting. Then the charging (red) light went out. I disconnected it all and let it and me cool down.
Anyway I thought the unit must have gone awol so I tried it again later and the red light comes back on but as soon as the XDA goes in the cradle (with it disconnected when I insert it) and then connect it, it still wont charge.
So today I bought a cigar lighter charger for the XDA and tried that and it also didnt charge the XDA - this was for the i-mate in an Orange store. So it looks like I need to visit the O2 shop.
I thought jeez the charging circuit has gone in the XDA, so when I got home I plugged it in to the wall charger and hey presto it worked?!?! So I am somewhat confused unless the Cigar lighter in the car is doing something bizzarre I'm stumped any thoughts?
Cheers
Paul
fatman11111, what one did you get? The one with pics at the top, or the one I linked?
...the one you linked to...i'm going to contact them next week to see what can be done - if you've got one try it out to see if you get the same probs, but stand by with a fire extinguisher!!!!
XDA Exec with latest version software...
Cheers
Paul
also....I dont recall it having a mic either, the LED is red on mine - moot point....when yopu connect the speaker cable to the XDA you cut off the Mic from the phone so you have a mic for incoming calls (bit poor really).
I got mine with Tomtom 5 from website not ebay...

Hi gooroo,
How about getting the universal in and out of the holder, can you give some detailed info about that please.
This one seems to have it's own mic so you get "proper" hands-free without BT headset.

Yeah, that's the one that I posted at the top, do you think it's better than the first? I'm in two minds about which one of the two to get... It's got a mic... but don't know if I like the idea of it slotting in, rubbing paintwork, scratching after a while....
Yep I was worried about the same this with the one which has the mic too.
I am actuallt considering the brodit one more so at the moment.

Yep, it's very simple although takes a little practice to do it with one hand. If you look at the photo's at the top, you simply pull the two sprung catches at the bottom apart and the Universal slips down by about 10mm allowing the top clips to clear the Universal and so allowing you to simply lift it out.

Sent the old one back today... the guys at Handnav were really responsive thouygh got a mail over the weekend with an RMA form - so I'll see what happens when i get the new one.

@fatman, I assume you are referring to the active mount mentioned elsewhere in this thread and not the passive mount that I reviewed?
It seems people are making a few negative comments regarding a active mount that someone else mentioned. I would like to point out that those comments are not about the passive mount I reviewed, with which I might add I am still well happy with!

In car charging
Hi fatman11111,
I have had my XDA Exec for a few months now & have always had a problem with charging in the car, sometimes it would and others it wouldn't.
I even bought another in car charger as I thought it was faulty.
Just today I have found that if I plug my XDA in then power it up it charges. If I switch on first, it doesn't.
I am going crazy trying to find a good mounting system for the Uni in the car (an 01 Focus). I use it for TT and the usual calling so would like it easily visable.
Is the Brodit type of mount better then a windscreen mount - why.
I like the look of the Brodit Active mount, but dont want to loose the Air vent on the dash (can't live with out the a/c in the summer).
If you have pics of the Uni mounted in the car I'd love to see them.
Is your prefered setup best? why?
I hope someone can put me out of my misery

This is my "way" =) he he he.

Hope at least it adds more idea to you.
I do have a "fixed" Brodit setup because:
a) the window-suction-cup-thing bounces and vibrates around because of the weight of the Universal
b) In the summer, the heat directly under the windshield is too much for the Universal.
I've placed the universal with a Brodit holder direct in front of the air vent, and the Universal loves it. But with the winter upcoming, don't know how the Universal is holding it when there's hot air flowing around him..

I went with the Brodit active mount.
Advantages:
1: Fixed mount against a solid part of the car which doesnt fall off the windscreen after you go over a bump.
2: Brings the Uni into reasonable reach which suction types didn't.
3: Bluetooth GPS receiver can be connected and charged off the same power supply as the phone, hard-wired into the car's wiring loom so no unsightly wires flailing about the car and being pulled out of the cigarette lighter when you change gear.
Disadvantages:
1: Can't be removed easily.
I haven't got any pictures but will take some later for you to see.

Brilliant - thanks
I used this type of mount with XDA II, and now use it with Universal for a long time. The previous one was active, this one is active as well.
I found it better to use Portrait orientation in most cases, except when need to type something, when I use Landscape; not a problem here, you can just turn it around and change between the orientations on-the-go (waiting on red light...)
The power wire has a cigarette-lighter plug, very neat indeed. Just in case my Bluetooth GPS unit gets low on power, I have an additional Y-connector (1 cig lighter plug and 2 cig lighter holes), and a cig lighter charger connection for the GPS. Looks less neat, but then it's got a week on its own without recharge, normal usage -- so don't use this config too often.
Looks very professional. Just like in the picture above, only I have it on my left and use my vent, not missus'
That said, my next BMW should probably have Sat Nav in-dash!
Hey Guys,
Im not doing a hard sell, but dont forget the Brodit Moveclip system now available. This 3 part pack allows you to slide the holder from the proclip and hot swap brodit holder devices onto the proclip or between cars wth a proclip and moveclip fitted, agreed, this is not ideal for fixed installation holders, but we have installed many onto passive and active with cig lighter holders.
Hope that helps you decide,

Cheers, Bryson, let me know if you have any questions,

I'd like something that would clamp on to my dash wall. Think cop car laptop.
I like this idea, I would especially love if these guys would drill holes for the camera....augmented relaity navagation has already come to Rt. 66, just a metter of time before it comes to Android. Have you seen an ipad mount reviews?
i work for a company who makes high end video products for the automotive world. We we're looking at making something for my XOOM today but in the sun...the XOOM screen is just very big which causes a lot of glare and with the sun hitting it at angles we couldn't see the screen very well.
Going to give it a shot anyways...we'll see.
The glare is an excellent point.
Looks awesome! Let us know how it goes when you get it. However, in CA, I think there is a law against operating a screen like this in the front of a car. If it actually got mounted, we would probably get fined for it unless we could work a GPS angle or something.
My car's windshield isn't big enough to mount a tablet to it....
This might not only be illegal, its likely very dangerous because of how much of your field of view it blocks.

Was thinking about replacing my old car dvd player for the kids with the xoom, mounted to the headrest. There's one on Amazon, I'm too new to post links.
Would definitely need an anti-glare screen protector though
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
I don't think the glare would be any worse than my Droid X. I have learned how to angel it for best results. I have also held the Xoom up to see where it would work best and only block a view of the top of the dash (don't look much at that anyway ) I would only use it for longer trips and in the motor home anyway. The Droid, in it's dock, works fine for local destinations.
Isnt it alittle bulky to put on a dash?
This is the only way I see Xoom in my car:

no offense but putting the xoom on the windshield is the dumbest thing i've ever seen.
other than the glare issue, i think a car mount solution could work for certain cars. definitely not a windsheield mount though. it would have to be a variation on the Proclip style thing that is specifically designed for your car and specifically designed for the xoom (i have one of these for my galaxy s, and it is absolutely hands down the best car dock ever).
one of the downsides of living in an apartment is i cant weld something like this out of sheet metal as i would have in my old place... on the upside it probably saves me from higher insurance fees from the inevitable car crash that would result from having such a setup in my car.
http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Mounting-RAM-B-316-1-AP8-Non-Locking-Universal/dp/B0042HLMYK
This is one of the ones that I want. They just need to make it for the Xoom...you could probably buy the one in the OP and this mount and piece them together just fine. This would put it in an area like a cop would use their laptops for.
thought I'd revive this thread
Has any of you early adapters ordered a car mount yet? I would love to do that in the near future (including a car charger) but I don't know what to get. It would be great if it didn't cost $50+ though. Main use would be navigation.

I'm planning on installing the standard dock underneath my HU. The dock has an integrated power and aux out so it perfect for this application. The only problem is it will block the IR (not to mention all the controls) of my HU so ill need to hard wire my HUs remote to the IR... but I thinks it worth it. Best carputer you can have on your dash right now, and you can take it with you when you are not in your car!

padholdr
what do u guys think of the padholdr for xoom from padholdr.com?
Its kind of expensive but im going to pick one up and tell you guys how it is.
This is my variation of a 3 pin pogo charging car dock.
I noticed the spacing of the SD sliding contact prongs from an old multicard reader were very close to the spacing of our 3 pins on the Gnex.
So I took it apart, pryed off the reader, and bent the prongs up slightly to make contact. I filed off as much extra plastic as possible. I snipped & striped a USB cable and soldered the red and black wires to the respective prongs.
Im in Norway, so I didn't have access to a VZW dumb dock to make this nice and clean. Instead I used a universal car mount to clamp down on the bottom half of a clamshell gnex case for repeatable contact. I put an NFC tag in the mount to trigger NFC Retag app to launch Torque app and enable bluetooth communication with the ELM 327 ODB2 bluetooth transmitter. These are cheap, and I highly recommend them to anyone interested in car tuning.
My next step is to flash the full amp pogo charging kernel, and actually mount this in the car when my wife gets back with it.

Hot glue into place
A little readjusting and dremeling for better alignment
Extra support glue globs on the back

ok, reuploaded pictures that fit on the screen now.

Its a crappy rocketfish from bestbuy, I linked to it in first post. but I wouldn't recommend using it as a case, its nearly impossible to get off and leaves weird marks.
Here is the charge SS from my drive. I did get a batt lvl increase with blue tooth, gps, syncs and light browsing in use. So it works.
Did you ever get that fast charge working thru the pogo pins?
Yes, it worked beautifully on the fast charge kernel from faux and Franco. Im m the JB builds now , waiting for that feature again. It makes a big difference.
Hi guys,
Using information (and inspiration) found here on XDA I decided to build my own Pogo Pin Car Dock for HOX.
Details about how the pins work you can find here so I won't get into details but I'll give you some details about the tools and components I used (actually a friend of mine did the assembly).
If you buy everything of the shelf you can make it with very little $$ (obviously not using the parts I used) but I already had everything I needed (except the pins) laying around so I used an car dock fom my old HTC Desire (I tried to sell it in pristine condition but nobody bought it for ~25% the price I paid) and flip case dedicated for HOX that I don't use (I hate to use this kind of case but I did not know that when I bought it). I bought the pins from here and I had a 10kOhm resistor from somewhere else (you can find them virtually everywhere).
Here are some pictures:

In order to easily put the phone in and get it out I had to cut some corners (literally). Now, I can actually easily slide the phone in with one hand. It's not very pretty with all the cutting (I had to cut the front leather lid and magnetic clip too) but IT WORKS!!
One small problem (ok, not that small) is the fact that using any navigation software (so screen always on, brightness to max, GPS ON) still drops the battery level, not very fast but it's still dropping (I had BT and DATA on also, but I don't think this will help much). This happens because apparently there is no way you could trigger full charging using the POGO pins so it's limited to 500mah (USB charging).
I'm happy to answer your questions if something it's not clear.
P.S. all photos are made with my HOX so there's no picture with the phone in the holder (I can make a high quality one if anyone is curios)
P.P.S. excuse any grammar mistakes, I'm not a native English speaker (and I wrote this in a rush)
U did an excelent job buddy. congrats XD XD
Pretty good, tempted to do one for my bedside cabinet....
Looks great. I was going to do something similar myself but once I realised that pogo pins can only be used for USB charge rate (500ma) I ended up just going for a USB type dock from eBay for just $20. No glory from having it homemade but allot quicker and easier as well as full rate charge (750ma) .

Nice job mate! It would be very nice if HTC or other accessory manufacturer could make an extended battery and external card reader using the pogo pins. Also any other pogo pin accessories. ......

Speaking of scratches, in order to prevent the pins from scratching the phone I always mount the phone in the upper side first (the right side if the dock is in portrait mode) and then I force the bottom part (left side) into place. This is the recommend method for all hard cases given the fact that the phone has volume rockers on the right side.
Hi
Good job first of all
I want to make something similar, but a a desktop version and I want to make it from the original phone box.
I acquired some bigger pins, but having a hard time alining them the proper way.
Did you also buy receptacles or anything like that for the one you linked?
Did you make the small board for them yourself?

Nope, I just bought the pins and I used a piece of circuit board to mount them.
Nope, I friend helped me with manufacturing. I like making stuff (and I'm handy) but I did not had the right tools.
From what I remember there are exactly 4mm between the pins (from center to center of pins). So you need to draw a straight line on a circuit board a make 5 points at 4mm distance (you only need to drill 3 holes: 1,4,5). The hole size should match the diameter of your pins.
Given the fact that HOX has a faulty behavior in dock mode (check this thread) I advise you to use only the charging pins (1&5).
Great work!!!
Mine is a bit more simple. I just bought the standard passive holder of Brodit and a left angle micro USB cable type A (to standard USB 2.0-A for vehicle input USB charger). Type A normally doesn't fit, because the plug is slightly different, but unlike type B (that has just pin 5 grounded) a type A cable also has pin 4 grounded. If you connect a USB cable with pin 4 grounded an HTC device switches to car mode (this is how the original D110 works). The only thing to do is make the type A plug fit in our standard plug B port. Few minutes with a nail file will do the trick!
Alternatively you could also use a micro USB type B cable (like the one that comes with the device) and bridge pin 4 and 5.
Cheers!
