Okay, the nice people over at PDAHut kindly sent me their new HTC Universal in car mount. I have now had a couple of weeks to really put it to the test so here is my verdict and before you ask, nope, I don't work for them.

On opening the package I was initially quite impressed. Manufactured in Germany, the finish of the plastic components were of a very good quality, no sharp edges, the texture and colour are a very close match to the Universal from O2 (the Exec). The part that grips the Universal itself is a simple spring design. The back edge has 3 small lips that over hang the device but still allow you to open and close the screen. The front is help by two more clips that are also sprung by flexing the plastic. It holds the device quite snugly and only really showed a problem when holding the Universal vertically in landscape, The weight of the Universal caused to it to creep down, spreading the two front sprung clips and allowing the back three clips to work loose. Saying that it never did fall out, even with the serious speed bumps in our street. The cradle has all the usual cut aways for standby, SD, headphones, reset, mini USB, Phone keys, speakers, volume, camera, voice and backlight keys. Even the IR and camera lens are clear. There is a small sticker fixed to the holder warning the user against opening the screen 180 degrees. I tried it and when I did the screen acted as a lever and forced the back of the Universal out of the holder. Adjustment is via twin axis swivel near the base, both with knurled thumb screws to lock it in place. After this there is a telescopic section that clicks into place as it is extended and retracted. Lastly is a full ball joint allowing you to rotate the device from portrait to landscape, again with a locking thumb screw to secure it in position. The suction base did not come off once in the 2 weeks I have used it and the all the thumb screws stayed tight. They also supplied a sticky back cup if you wanted to fix it to a textured surface.
So, overall, a lovely piece of kit and in my humble opinion well worth the money PDAhut are asking for it!

Hi, I'm looking at getting some sort of mount for my Uni, how do you think this compares with another I was looking at at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9714064603&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1 ??
This one has a built in speaker and mic to enhance the onboard versions, the only downside is that the Uni stays in reverse clam position, you can't close and open normally, but I don't see that of much of a problem...
Would appreciate others opinions, esp if anyone has any of them, or similar....
Just bought one, thanks for the link, it looks great.
I bought one too
Hi, newbie here - just bought one of those units to run the TOM TOM from.
Now I have had a real strange one....
There is a little switch on the side which switches from GPS unit charging to XDA charging, trouble is after about 1/2 hour smoke started to appear from the back of the speaker mounting. Then the charging (red) light went out. I disconnected it all and let it and me cool down.
Anyway I thought the unit must have gone awol so I tried it again later and the red light comes back on but as soon as the XDA goes in the cradle (with it disconnected when I insert it) and then connect it, it still wont charge.
So today I bought a cigar lighter charger for the XDA and tried that and it also didnt charge the XDA - this was for the i-mate in an Orange store. So it looks like I need to visit the O2 shop.
I thought jeez the charging circuit has gone in the XDA, so when I got home I plugged it in to the wall charger and hey presto it worked?!?! So I am somewhat confused unless the Cigar lighter in the car is doing something bizzarre I'm stumped any thoughts?
Cheers
Paul
fatman11111, what one did you get? The one with pics at the top, or the one I linked?
...the one you linked to...i'm going to contact them next week to see what can be done - if you've got one try it out to see if you get the same probs, but stand by with a fire extinguisher!!!!
XDA Exec with latest version software...
Cheers
Paul
also....I dont recall it having a mic either, the LED is red on mine - moot point....when yopu connect the speaker cable to the XDA you cut off the Mic from the phone so you have a mic for incoming calls (bit poor really).
I got mine with Tomtom 5 from website not ebay...

Hi gooroo,
How about getting the universal in and out of the holder, can you give some detailed info about that please.
This one seems to have it's own mic so you get "proper" hands-free without BT headset.

Yeah, that's the one that I posted at the top, do you think it's better than the first? I'm in two minds about which one of the two to get... It's got a mic... but don't know if I like the idea of it slotting in, rubbing paintwork, scratching after a while....
Yep I was worried about the same this with the one which has the mic too.
I am actuallt considering the brodit one more so at the moment.

Yep, it's very simple although takes a little practice to do it with one hand. If you look at the photo's at the top, you simply pull the two sprung catches at the bottom apart and the Universal slips down by about 10mm allowing the top clips to clear the Universal and so allowing you to simply lift it out.

returned goods
Sent the old one back today... the guys at Handnav were really responsive thouygh got a mail over the weekend with an RMA form - so I'll see what happens when i get the new one.

@fatman, I assume you are referring to the active mount mentioned elsewhere in this thread and not the passive mount that I reviewed?
It seems people are making a few negative comments regarding a active mount that someone else mentioned. I would like to point out that those comments are not about the passive mount I reviewed, with which I might add I am still well happy with!

In car charging
Hi fatman11111,
I have had my XDA Exec for a few months now & have always had a problem with charging in the car, sometimes it would and others it wouldn't.
I even bought another in car charger as I thought it was faulty.
Just today I have found that if I plug my XDA in then power it up it charges. If I switch on first, it doesn't.

I installed the car dock app from the nexus on my desire a while ago. Today as I was going out I plugged my desire into my 9.99 mobile fun car charger / holder, like normal. However this time I didn't plug the micro USB in enough and a notification appear that said it had been connected to a car dock and it launched the car dock app and started charging.
I thought that the nexus one had metal terminals that told it when it was plugged into the home dock or car dock. I am wondering if the desire has something in the micro USB port that has the ability to do the same.
Can you get it to do it again??
It might be detecting something on the ID pin on the micro usb, if it is we may be able to modify chargers to enable dock mode
On the droid, it's simply a magnet in the car dock that tells the phone where it is, maybe it's the same here?
Nope, tested with a magnet. As the OP said it started when he plugged the charger in its more than likely the ID pin. We just need to find what the trigger was on the ID pin.
I can pretty much get it to do it on demand yes.
I saw it pop up while I was driving and then stopped to see if I could get it to do it again. Wiggled the usb a bit and sure enough the notification came up.
I suspect from some things I've read that HTC are releasing a dock for the Desire, I would hope that this notification message goes some way to confirming this.
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/trailblazer-universal-car-charger-and-holder-p22954.htm >> This is the charger if any one is interested.
I'll try and get a screenshot some time over the weekend too.
Which cable are you using to connect from the charger to the desire?
The standard desire cable or one that comes with the car charger?
Can you get the notification with the standard cable too?
(sorry for the amount of Q's but i'm interested in getting this working for my phone too, and i'm sure others will be aswell!)
Hi, this is an adjacent-related post, for those seeking a car dock. I like how the dock illustrated in this thread is a general purpose car mount vs. all the "customized for one particular phone" types which I think are overkill and not very versatile.
The one you show here is neat because it's attached right to the cigarette plug.

But depending on your car's interior layout, that could place your device really far from your line of sight... especially if you want to use the Desire for google maps or turn by turn directions.
I just want to show another example of a different type of auto mount, though there are hundreds of them. In USA, in state of California, we are prohibited from having those windshield mounts that use a suction to attach the phone holder. So a variety of Dashboard Mounts emerged. This, to me, is the best. It is a bit more expensive than others, but to me the value is there in total functionality and versatility....
The method of attachment is this weighted "plate", and it attaches to your dash by way of strong double sided tape or strong velcro. The weight is focused on the back side of the platform. The pltform is shiny smooth like glass, but plastic, and a suction mount attaches to it, and it is super strong, does not come apart, unless you release it to reposition.
The arms adjust in various ways and a swivel head allows you to angle the device so that it optimally faces you at the correct height and angle so there's no reflection.
It is Universal, so it'll mount just about any smartphone, and it's bottom "feet" slide either side to account for connector locations. The gripper is strong, but soft on the phone, and has minimal side contact, thus enabling volume controls to be accessed. And the whole thing rotates to horizontal positioning with a twist, while you're driving, and it's rock solid, nothing to unscrew, it just is designed really well so that it can be easily adjusted from vertical to horizontal display position.
I am just saying all this because I have used this same mount for my T-Mobile Wing, my HTC Hero, and now my HTC Desire, and all have worked perfectly and flawlessly, with total positioning control.
To me there are times and places where getting cheapest of anything is a good call. But when you envision yourself driving, and using google maps, or the phone, of switching music to next song, or, dare I say it, viewing an incoming SMS (not sending one), you cannot take your eye off the road not even for a split second. To me this is an example of where an extra $10 or extra $15 is well worth the cost of your life -- to give you the full extended capability of using your DESIRE in the car... where some of us spend a lot of time.
So, here are some pictures -- from 2 years ago with my WING... so, just to emphasize, it's constructed well too, and will last many years and not lose its rigidity of placing the phone exactly where you want it. That was important to me.
**
It looks like it is too expensive to ship these internationally from USA, but maybe you can find similar types of dash mounts in Europe.
The USA accessory provider is Arkon - here: http://www.arkon.com/iPhone_Car_Mount.php
hope this is of use
It's the ID pin that needs to be connected to the ground pin as indicated here:

Car mount
when someone actually gets one of these home charger/dock combo's and confirms they fit and work, could you please post here, with the link to the one you bought?
so many of these things are junk, and dont fit the phone, that I am afraid to try another one that doesnt work, after getting burned already
thanks
I actually bought a zuuma z4 and took it for a spin this morning. Wow that thing is solid! It stayed put even after a 120 degree turn at 20 mph!
It has an adjustable cradle with soft padding that holds my evo in place and gives it some protection.
I really only have 2 problems with it. It took me a while to figure out how to mount it properly as it comes with no proper instructions. Second, its byoc (bring your own charger).
Great for $30!!!

zuuma looks very nice...too bad they dont make a home desktop/spare battery charger
I am not buying the home dock, as I don't have a use for it...but I am buying the car mount and will report back how it works. Coming from the other side of the world though, so it will be 10 - 15 days before i report back.

if it does, just get the ebay one and drill a nice hole on the holder
They sale a generic universal (rebranded) one at Wal-Mart that clamps on to the phone with thick foam padding. It's pretty stable and clips securely into the vents (or screws in / etc). It's like $9.99. Best of all, you don't have to remove your protective case to use it, since it adjusts with a button.
Food for thought.

If Car Mount is specifically made for EVO, why in the description does it say "Suction cup with lock clip to ensure your iphone 4 remains in place"
Same crap Products with different labeling
I just got my ebay order. This is the second item l got from the same seller. Unfortunately, the dock was shipped with no protective packaging, and part of the suction cup was broken. I'm hoping to get a replacement. There is a hole in the holder for the camera. Looks like the box was opened by customs, or was shipped broken because the broken piece was missing upon receipt. The holder is tight-fitting, and has 4 locking slots similar to my magellan dock. Build quality is ok for 6 bucks, but I doubt one would be able too fit an evo with a case in the holder. I have a zaggskin on mine. I previously purchased the battery charger and 2 batteries from this vendor.

I received the car dock today and it works pretty well. There is a cutout for the camera, has to holders on the bottom (or side if you leave in portrait) and a flexible clip on the top. Has the universal 4 peg holder and the large middle so if you don't like their holder or need one with a longer neck you can get one. I have not tried it in the car as of this writing, only in the house to try out the fit. It is perfect without a case - with my "Barely There" case it fits, but no quite right. I will post pictures very soon so all can see what I mean.
Easy enough...
Don't bother with this one. The fit on the car dock is tight...too tight. Left small, very tough to see, scratches. You may not notice, but I did and I am not happy with this one.
Not worth the few bucks it cost.
DealExtreme just got it in for a little cheaper. They are good with refunding your money too when it comes to problems.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.40745
Does anyone know if the dealextreme or ebay car holder will work if you have an extended battery with a larger back panel?? I ordered the extended 3000 mah battery off eBay.
Also, I just wanted to point out that the eBay car dock and the deal extreme one are definitely different.
I got the car dock and I really like it. It's a snug fit but the Evo pops in and out easily enough (I did not get any scratches on it). The Evo is held very securely and does not vibrate while the car is moving. There is maximum up/down and left/right adjustment and when the best postion is found you lock it in with two big hand screws. Overall I'm very satisfied.

You forgot to tell us which one you got!! There have been a few mentioned. And can it be used with a case?
Just wanted to post this review of a mount I bought on ebay ( will get the name and link soon )
I only took one pic so far when I first got it. But it totally AWESOME!!!
It might seem a little weird to many people and it did with me at first too..
Why, because it mounts INTO the cd player of your car.. You can do other slits in your dash but its designed for your cd player..
As for the quality, it looks very stout it feels a little cheaper than it looks but after a few weeks now, in my VW golf and hitting hard bumps, it holds like a champ..
What I love about it, it will rotate either way and will angle either way..
So if my passenger wants to watch a movie or something, easily done.. Or when using navigation and Car Panel I keep it in Portrait mode..
I cannot get over the PERFECTNESS of this mount.. I couldn't DREAM of a better place to put it or mount it..
It takes seconds to install, you just slide the mount into the cd, where a cd would go and tighten the screw..
THATS IT!!
the only thing I did do was cut the bottom leg that holds the bottom of the phone as its not needed, plus I only cut the Bottom U portion of it (hard to explain) so the charger wouldn't have any pressure on it..
In anycase Ill get more pics soon, but I just wanted to RAVE about this product.. And for only 15 bucks its the best investment I made with this phone.

Yes, if mounted in the CD player, you would not be able to play a CD.
It does work very well though and puts the phone in the perfect place for me in my truck. You can also use it in other places you have room to slide the mount into.
I've been using mine daily for the past three weeks with no issues and nothing but praise.

I got http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ELOOZO/ref=oss_product from Amazon. Works GREAT with my EVO and my wife's BB and instincts. For $15 it is definitely worth it.
I bought the mount that the OP gave a link to. I really like it and have ordered 2 more for friends for Christmas gifts. Easy to install (if you can call it that - you just insert it ), functional, my charger fits into the port and the mount doesn't interfere, rotates easily, sturdy. SOOooooo much better and safer to have my Evo mounted like this as I use it for navigation and streaming music.
Thanks for the info on this mount. Got one ordered last night.

Good find, I also have the commuter case and didn't feel like taking it on and off if I got the official HTC mount.
I ordered the Mountek mount suggested by the OP. Works great, and keeps the phone in the most convenient location on my dash.
Now with a good mount I realized I need a way to connect to the car's audio system, so I just ordered an inline FM modulator. This will provide an aux in jack so I can stream Pandora, etc. I'm also thinking of wiring in a mic up near the visor so I can have a totally built-in hands-free system.
Thanks OP!
amazing reviews for it looks like itd be perfect for my tibby. ordering now
This is the best car mount BY FAR!
The green part is sticky and works with any case just about unless yours is slicked up and oiled. Same stuff on the bottom with suction.

The soundgate m2 worked great for my hero and I am going to use the same for my new evo. Would suggest it only if you have a case as you have to attach a coin size disk. Awesome mount!

Once you get it plugged into your aux in jack, you will be handsfree. At least that is how iw work for me. When I'm plugged into my (built-in) aux in calls come through my speakers, when I anser I am on speaker phone and the caller's voice is on the car's speakers. It. Is. Sweet!
I got a similar product manufactured by platinum at bestbuy, and within the first few days it started to lose its stickiness. After my phone fell out face-first onto my gear shift twice, I'd had enough. I returned it to bestbuy (at least they refund your money, no questions asked) and went looking for a better alternative.
I settled on a car dock I found at my local at&t store which I guess was designed for the iphone4. It has mechanical locking arms with a release button, good padding, a strong mechanical suction cup for mounting on the windshield, and an adjustable arm.
I am much more satisfied with the new mount, don't fear my evo falling out of it at all, and have it mounted landscape below my rear view mirror - very convenient.

I used to own the original version of the Liveview, but due to the watch holder snap on case design flaw it flew off while playing PS Move and broke (this was one of the two main issues with it). That happened around 3 months ago, and try as I might, I couldn't find a watch that could hold a candle to the functionality and awesomeness that was the Liveview.
Flash forward to yesterday. I saw that Amazon.com was selling the Liveview Directly now (as opposed to a 3rd party vendor using Amazon's storefront). I went ahead and ordered one with the impression that it was the same version, and I had planned to use the velcro idea to keep the liveview attached.
Well today I received the liveview (Amazon Prime FTW), and lo and behold, it's the newer version (the one talked about with the US release). Right now it's doing it's first initial charge, so i haven't updated the FW or anything yet so I will update this thread later with more info, but there are some major differences already that make me happy! The first and most important is the clip-on watch holder. It has been redesigned to stop from popping off, and to work with ANY watch band (that fits the 20mm size coupler of course). The backing is completely filled in.

Once it's fully charged and I update the FW, I will run some other tests. If you have any questions, or there's something you want me to try, post here and I will get back to you. Also, if you want to order the US release version of the Liveview you can do so by Clicking Here.
Update:
So it's fully charged, and I put it in the updated watch holder, and it snapped in with a nice snug fit. It feels like it's in there really good, and there is no chance it would fall out like before. It's hard to explain, but hot damn it feels like the way it should have in the first place.
before turning it on, I went ahead and downloaded SEUS and updated the firmware for it. I've had it connected to my phone for over 2.5 hours, and have not had a single disconnect (my phone is a Thunderbolt). Now I know a good factor of the disconnects is caused by low memory on the phone, and chances are that isn't applicable with my phone, but there are also disconnects caused by things other than the phone memory. Needless to say, the whole liveview experience has improved drastically, and i'm very pleased none the less.
Hmm. Doesn't really look that different to me. All I can really see that is different is that they've filled the back of the mounting clip in. Which to be honest would probably annoy me more than anything as I used to jam my thumb through that hole to pop the liveview out of it's mounting clip.
I guess you still can't charge it whilst in the mount?
Any other hardware changes?
I can't see any difference to the way the strap is attached. I threw the included strap away as soon as I opened the box to mine and replaced it with a silicone strap with a deployment clasp. So much easier.
What's the model number? Is it still an MN800?
I'm not quite as excited as you are about this, but I'm glad you are!
I just got my liveview yesterday, and it is indeed a drastic change to the watch strap cilp...
The golden quesiton though is how the hell am I supposed to charge it with a watch strap on?!?!
The new 'holster' for the liveview to be used as a watch (not the cloths clip) is so tight that it is VERY difficult to remove from it's mount to charge, so it is still pretty useless that way...and I won't want to weaken the plastic or break anything.
With the silocone strap, does it allow for charging without having to unmount? I am dying to find a good solution for 'on the watch' charging!!

No :/
Because the watch strap pin is effectively directly in front of the MicroUSB plug, there's not a chance that you could charge whilst still in the strap.
The only way to do it is to modify the "belt clip" attachment and somehow attach a strap to that instead.
Pretty piss-poor design flaw to be honest.
What a terrible design. Ugh. Battery life on my livebirw has been piss poor too.

I bought this one when it was "unofficially" launched in my country 2 days ago. Twitted about what the hey people are fussing about the clip because it's clipped on very tight... Well... Too tight even. Now I have difficulty taking it off.
Any pointers about taking the LiveView from the clip? I got mine clipped on by the shop keeper for added assurance about loose clip, but now I can't seem to be able to release it from the clip.
The clip has two small tabs and one long tab, I wonder which direction I should push before lifting the LiveView from the clip, towards the small tabs or the long tab? Tried pushing and lifting towards the small tabs, but lost my nerve somewhere in the gutter.
Need to second charge the device, and although releasing the pin and strap behind the micro USB helps, I can't rely on this method since I'm planning to buy a real watch strap for it, or got stuck with the velcro strap (ick).
Ya I got mine unofficially released aswell. What a tight ass clip.

This looks much better
now all i have to do is to try and get one
Sony spares have no idea that it's available, it should be free to everyone with a Liveview TBH
A better choice of wrist band for Liveview.

I just got a leather strap by Timex that has "ez pin". It allows you to remove the strap to charge and easily put it back on....14.99 Walmart in Canada....genuine leather and looks good too....Better than that ass liking Velcro...it now looks decent!

Im going to do that to mine. Get rid of velcro. Thanks for bumping the topic @user above me.

So, here is my strap...as you can see, pull the pin which is spring loaded and voila....charging port is accessible and it's not a pain to charge!

So, how's it been working for you so far? Thinking about putting it on my Christmas list...
What do you think of this? Looks like it'll do the job as it allows a case on the phone and it rotates. Think I might order one, what do you reckon? Although I wonder if it would press against the power on/off button.
I don't think many vent mounted holders rotate, at least, I could only find one other.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Vent-...ers_Mounts&hash=item2564feb988#ht_1506wt_1396
I was considering this one too, but not sure if it'll take a case and I read one persons review somewhere that on a hot day the glue melted on part of the holding part and his phone fell.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Air-V...ers_Mounts&hash=item5d2fe2012d#ht_2590wt_1163
i think you might struggle to get to the power button on the first one. but that seller does offer 7 day money back...so worth a punt.
and your right, i don't think the second one will take a case too.
I went for a cup holder mount (don't like stuff on the screen) for my MINI.

works a treat!
Do you use your CD player in the car? I use a car mount where it mounts to the opening of the CD. Works great!
search eBay phone CD mount.
You can kind of see it in this picture,

Thanks guys. Cup holder would be decent, but my car doesn't have one, at least, not a proper deep one.
Nice car lexi, I guess that's why you called yourself that
Yeah, I use my player, so that wouldn't work for me. Might still go for the
first one I linked and hope it doesn't press too hard on the power button. I'll message the seller and ask him if it does that. As long as it doesn't, then I certainly don't need access to it as I always have the phone on anyway.
I've tried all sorts of car mounts (including the official Samsung Galaxy S II car dock), but nothing worked for my requirements, except for Exomount.
Here's my requirements: I want to be able to video-record my driving on the background (as evidence in court in case of an accident), and have Navigon running concurrently on the foregound.
Most car mounts would block the video lense, and would interfere with the volume rocker of the S II.
However, Exomount would stick anywhere (not just the windshield)...including the car dashboard, thus allowing you to adjust it so that it wouldn't block the camera lense or interfere with the side buttons.
If you want the cheap and nasty mounts on ebay that don't work as promised, you get what you pay for.
First ones quality is very bad and cheap. Sides are way big and ugly for this phone. Legs are not fixed and WILL break off very soon.
Second one does not fit if you buy samsung original 2000mAh extended battery. Actually I have been looking for nice car mount for extended battery and have found only one that may suit: hxxp://w w w.ebay.co.uk/itm/180724628107?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
Dammnit, this is why I STILL don't own a vent mounted phone holder for the SGS2.
I mean, where on earth I do find a good quality one that rotates, is vent mounted, doesn't block the power button, takes a case, and won't fall apart?? You'd think someone would have made one by now.
I might consider this one instead...

That's exactly the one I was just going to ask about. Do you think it would take the phone with my case on?
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/1399/back4d.jpg
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/9586/front5j.jpg
If so, I think that could be the one to get, and I need a charger too, so that would be handy.
edit: I've just messaged the seller to ask if he knows if it'll fit with the case on.
My only concern is how stable the mount is. Check these two out. I think the first one is the same as the ebay link ?
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s2-car-vent-holder-p31451.htm
But does this second one share the same mount system, I can't tell.
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/universal-phone-vent-holder-p27265.htm
If so, I'm a bit concerned about one review:
"Great holder easy to fit to the vent in my van, very adjustable to get the phone in exactly the right position, even holds my iphone secure with the added thickness of an ijuice battery case fitted. Unfortunately the glue that holds the metal fixing bar into the plastic of the phone holder can't be strong enough and with the extremes of heat in a vehicle left in the sun, the bar releases from the glue and holder and falls off ! thankfully my phone wasn't attached at the time. The holder is so versatile that I didn't want to get rid, and with the use of a small black cable tie, is secure and tightly fitted back to my vent ( only a solution if you don't mind your holder permanently attached ) i rate the holder , shame about the fixing to the vent."

I have used this in vents, steering wheel, Dash - This thing is so flexible and strong with the best grip and is just plain versatile. Best thing I have purchased for my device - You can find it for a reasonable price on Amazon UK and Ebay.

There's no way I'd have something I'd have to spend several minutes bending and ensuring all the legs are securing the phone every time I get in the car tbh. Nice concept though.
It stays in the same position. You just slot the phone in to whatever shape you have prepared (Once) It is exactly the same as any other mount but has the ability to change shapes and fit in more obscure positions.
Awesome, I found 2 vent mounts which look pretty decent. I'm going to definitely buy one of these. I've messaged them to ask if the first one will work with my case instead of theirs. If it doesn't, then the second one with the extendable side clasps will be fine.

As uppon said, once it's in the vent, it stays in position and you don't have to rebend the legs to hold the phone. They're springy enough that you can just "clip" the phone into the prebent legs and it'll hold it perfectly.

Ah, I see. I didn't realise they're springy. I was thinking you'd have to bend out the prongs each time to get the phone in and then press them down in place again. But what if you want to quickly rotate the phone between portrait and landscape?
Anyway, I just ordered and paid for this, so I'm looking forward to it now : http://www.ultimate-mobiles.co.uk/m...g-galaxy-s2/car-kits/air-vent-mount___645.htm
Here's pics of just the holder part, looks pretty nice I think, not cheap and tacky like most holders http://www.ultimate-mobiles.co.uk/device-holders/mobile-phones/universal-mobIle-holder___776.htm
