My main beef with the notification LED is that it blinks way to slowly, i have to stare at it for like 10 seconds to see if i have a text or not.
Light flow appears to not be compatible, as it causes the LED to be solid green whenever my screen is off (even if there's no notification), and Light manager partially works, (does not blink, and color is off)
Are there any other apps out there? I really just want to make it blink faster (frequency control)
Yours blinks? Mine stays on solid when I have any sort of notification. (Missed call, text, email, voicemail, etc...)

hmm strange, u have stock at&t galaxy s3?
i'd never want mine to stay solid, i'd imagine there would be a significant drop in brightness after a few months, especially if i got a notification after i went to bed and it were on all night.

Yupp, all stock. And LEDs don't normally get dimmer until they are about to actually go out. Which takes a long long time. It's not like an incandescent lightbulb.
when i miss an email mine is solid green. miss a kik message solid purple. miss text message blinks blue.
I didn't configure any of this and can't even see how to.... I thought the system just was realizing different apps notify and changing it up.
interesting, my LED flashes blue for every type of notification, it just flashes like once every 8 seconds, which is just too slow.
Mine is solid as well, red when charging, blue for emails, and purple for almost everything else. I have a white phone as well.
If there are multiple notifications, it will pulsate through the different colours.

You can change the settings in Kik to get one of like 3 colors I think. I have mine set to white in Kik and it actually does come out white. I think the other two that work are red and blue. Pretty sure green is the only one that doesn't work.

I'm having a bit of trouble. Whenever I get a text message or MMS the green notification LED doesn't turn to amber? Anyone know a way to get it to turn amber when a message is received?
Haha, I wish you were right and we had a problem. No, this is what we call a feature in the Excalibur. The LED doesn't turn amber at all when you receive a message.
The only way you can tell you have received a message is when the phone is charging and there's a steady green or a steady yellow. If a message is received, then it blinks green.
It's really annoying and pisses me off coming from the PPC world but that is just the way it is. If it makes you feel better, Treo 750 users have similar issues and that's a full blown WM5 phone.
There may be programs floating around that can change the LED upon certain triggers but the ones that I have tried don't really work. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. We all know that the LED can blink yellow, green or red. It should just be a matter of software to get that going.
I have been using DontForget. It has the ability to turn off your LED and have it blink only when you have and email, or SMS or a missed call. Or, if you like to keep the normal flashing, you can set it to just blink faster when there's a notification. IMO this should be part of the OS. Get it at http://blog.softimage.cz/?page_id=83
I have also been using DF since Day 1 but it is kinda quirky. I would prefer to change the color of the LED rather than turn it off completely and have it flash faster (I mean how the hell do you distinguish the faster flashing from the slower flashing--I can't and I tried).
I've configured my DF to turn off the LED as well, i'm quite happy with it
Sweet! Thanks a lot for the help. It was a life saver
Morning,
Is anyone else finding their Notification LED for text messages (Possibly E-Mail's too) is flashing for 2-3 Minutes then stopping? Missed several texts now because of this and its annoying me that I have to keep unlocking my phone to check for texts.
Is there an option I have missed? Do I have a dodgy Phone? or is that just the way it is?
KYI
I think mine does this too, that's why I was asking for a Wake on Notification app. Can we change LED from green or orange via software?

'Missed call' for the Market lets you (IIRC) change LED colour Whether is is fully operational on Desire, I'm not sure. Don't think you need root access either.
It's only flashes for about 2-3 mins then goes off - if you've not noticed by then I assume it thinks it'll save power...
makes sense to me to be honest. for example if u miss a text on the iphone, it will only chime once more. i wouldnt want mine staying on.
I Suppose I just miss it for the G1 days. My Phone is on silent all day at work and the continious LED was a bonus for notifications. Surely an single LED doesn't draw that much power? Might have to give Missed call a try again.
nah the desire seems to use different code to light up the notification LED so none of the LED apps on the market work anymore. like LEDtester, the LED just flashes green and cant be changed. and handcent, it just flashes green and cant be changed.

have it on vibrate instead - or just check the screen every now and then...
I did post about this earlier but got zero replies so I wondered if it was only me.
Mine blinks for I think it's exactly 5mins. That's it. And I don't think it has anything to do with saving battery since that one blinkiing LED (mostly blinking when then screen is off) does not take much power at all.
I've emailed HTC to see what they say.
Although not ideal, handcent does allow you to set notification reminders.
I have mine set to re-vibrate 15 mins after receiving a text if I haven't checked it. You can change all the options, so have it chime, vibrate, wake scree, flash LED, all of above, one of above etc. at different intervals and a number of times - I find once vibrating only to be a sufficient reminder if it's in my pocket, however if on a desk would probably have the screen re-awaken.
Might help.

I haven't seen my LED light work once yet. I've had the phone since Thursday (VZW LTE) and don't even know what the LED looks like. I'm guessing its right next to the ear piece? As I said I'm still stock unrooted, but I do use Dialer One and Handcent. I'm guessing Handcent has a bug with ICS and/or the Galaxy Nexus? I go into notification settings, the LED option is checked, but when I select "Test Notification" Handcent FC/stops responding. Also when I get a new email (gmail), I don't get any kind of LED notification...Any suggestions?
It's at the bottom of the front of the phone. About 1/4" from the bottom of the phone. I've only seen it light up on new text messages though. I hear Light Flow works to customize the LED.
Go to settings > display. Is pulse notification light checked?
I also use light flow, and i was never a fan of notification lights before, but its got enough customization that i can make it act how i want it to....and things like that is why i switched to android from that other phone in the first place
When I first got mine, I thought it was broken too. I seems the default settings don't use the notification nearly as much as some other phones. I recommend getting light flow and setting up the notification light that way.
Yeah I think it was a combination of not realizing exactly where to look and it not being used as often as I would have thought. After installing Lightflow I see it now, thanks. It's actually really sick looking.
Light flow is awesome, I wish I had found this app a long time ago. I assume that you're supposed to disable notification inside the individual apps and just do it all through light flow?
Also, it doesn't seem to allow me to change colors? (I change the color setting but the light is always white-ish).
I just switched from a Nexus 4 to a HTC One M8 GPe. On the Nexus 4 I used Light flow very much with many colors and blink patterns to be able to identify what was happening without turning on the screen. Now when I have installed Light flow on my M8 it's only possible to choose from 4 colors or something and no blink patterns.
Is this possible to fix?
Great phone but this really bothers me...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that it is due to the limitations of the LED on the M8 vs the N4. It's a different type of LED so there isn't an ability to tinker with it as much.
I miss that from my N4 too, but ultimately as soon as I saw/see a notification light I check the phone anyway.

I suspected this but before I got the M8 I didn't even realize that it would have anything else than the best LED. But yeah, 90% of the times It's just a message of some kind so I guess I'll survive. Still annoying though...

Not only is it not possible to fix because of the limitation of the LED that the other poster mentioned, but I'd be shocked if Light Flow gives you any color other than green and if it works consistently.
I had messed around with it some a couple of weeks ago, and gave up. I guess it's possible the Light Flow developer has tweaked it since then, but the version I was using was pretty useless on the M8. I don't fault the Light Flow developer though. I blame HTC on this one.

I was able to get green and amber to work. Some colors would just pick green or amber, others just wouldn't do anything.

Yeah, it seems to work pretty bad. Are there any other ways to control the LED like Light flow? Does it work better if you just let all the apps control it themselves? I guess not?
I was able to get green and amber to work.
Green, deep orange, magenta and cyan works for me, but green and cyan shows as green/yellow on the LED and deep orange and magenta shows as orange.
Messed around with the LED settings in Textra after I disabled Light flow and suddenly it actually started to blink. Great improvement!
Is it possible to get it to blink in Light flow too?
Edit: Yes, enable color mixing.

Maybe I was unclear. To get it to flash in light flow you just need to enable mix and choose flash under the right color. This is not specific for Textra, but Textra can flash the Led by itself, without Light flow.
I've really tried getting it to work, but needed to put it in Direct Mode to get the LED with permanent light when lit, instead of flashing.
But in this mode the LED is dimmed even though the settings are set to 100% brightness in lightflow.
To get the LED 100% brightness I needed to remove Direct Mode and accept that permanent light instead didn't work, and live with flashing LED. Hence, not very different control than the standard setup i the Sense rom.
Any clues?

Try direct mode, root mode and HTC alternative mode. All three at once.
With that Setting the led is always permanent on dimmed like 20% through mixer and also standard control.

Yes, I had the LED flashing green from Textra, without Lightflow. But the Textra reminder options are so limited, I'd really prefer to use Lightflow if I can get it working properly.

Then I dont know. Works perfect for me. Really bright too. Have you turned off LED notification in screen settings?
I've been fooling around with this a lot since hearing the news that it was working.
I think I've got it working pretty well to my satisfaction now. As I was messing with settings, some of which I may have inadvertently checked (like the Samsung always on setting) I saw a number of interesting behaviors.
One was that at one point my basic notification was, instead of just the green LED flashing, a combination of alternating green and amber colors. (I'm not sure what I did, so don't ask me to reproduce it.)
At some other point I had the LED staying on even with the screen on.
There were other issues, though, when those things were happening. So I kept monkeying with the settings, and I think while neither of those things are happening now, for the most part Lightflow is working acceptably well. I actually would like it if the LED --could-- be on while the screen is on.
Also unless I am mistaken, after an alert, if the screen is turned on but the alert is not cleared, when the screen is turned off, the LED will not come back on. Is this what you two are experiencing as well? I'm pretty sure with my last phone if the alert was not cleared, the LED would continue to flash.
Thanks.

When the LED is alternating between two colors (or more on other phones) it's probably two (or more) notifications and you've got the settings to loop through them all. Standard setting is to do this when you have the charger plugged in IIRC.
The LED is working with the screen on for me and I think it always has on the M8. On my Nexus 4 it turns off when I turn on the screen and the LED turns on again if I don't clear it and turn off the screen. Great if you don't want to read the message right now and still don't want to miss it later. Since the LED is always working wether or not the screen is on, this is not a problem on the M8.
But if it's possible to alternate with both colors on the same notification, that would be a great way to get a third "color". Could you check if it is like I said or if it really is dual color?
EDIT:
I got it to work! In mixer you can set one color to solid and one to flash to get both. So there are actually a difference on green + amber and amber + green. This will give us a total of 6 options: green, flashing green, orange, flashing orange, orange + flashing green, green + flashing orange.
EDIT2:
The non-flashing color isn't very strong, so I'm not sure how useful this really is.

It was definitely not really two notifications, though it is somehow possible that Lightflow was acting as if it were. The alternating was definitely like the alternating LED colors that I used to see on my last device when it was alternating between notifications.
I can't reproduce it because I don't know what crazy combination of settings I had at the time. The Samsung always on setting was probably involved. It's even possible I had incorrect checked the Samsung root mode. I was really trying lots of things, and not sure of what I was doing.
Right now, as you suggested, I have Direct Mode, Root Mode, and HTC Alternative driect mode all checked.
I have all LED notifications turned off in Settings/Display and Gestures/Notification Light.
I have Textra set to not notify me in any way, and am using LighFlow for notifications and repeat notifications.
I have not tested things much, so I really don't know how well it is working, but it basically seems to be, though I definitely do not have the LED staying lit with the phone on, or after I turn it on and then back off.
I wonder if some of the differences we are seeing could be due to versions of the phone, rooting procedures, etc. My phone is the Verizon version, and I used Weaksauce to gain root access. Could this make a difference?
Again, many thanks!
It is not possible to fix because of the limitation of the LED.

Yes. A singular color on the left bottom.

Maybe you can find some Xposed Module for custom LED...
That is sad my older phones at least have yellow red and green
It is even configurable via third party apps or like I am using custom roms
Any way it doesn't bother me if its blinking smoothly or at least just blink it not a sloppy 3 step transition
Have a look at the Light Flow app. Unfortunately changing the blinking speed doesn't work but at least it's possible to define the apps whose notifications are switching the LED on.
Sorry it seems there is much confusion around about the (white only) notification led. I'm still reading people stating that the led just lights up for showing that phone is charging, and do NOT lights up for notifications like missed calls, pending incoming messages and other usaual android notifications.
May you please confirm that indeed it DO lights up for android notifications and not only when charging? Thanks
One more thing: if it lights for notificatins but it also lights pemanently while charging, how do you distinguish notifications while charging?
It blinks for notifications and is permanently on while charging. Not sure what happens with notifications while charging as I only do it over night every 2-3 days. Never had any problems with the LED by the way.
Thanks rfkf you cleared it up!
If any wonders exactly.
Made some test.
White led only, off, blinks slowly or always on.
When a notification is received and screen goes off it blinks slowly.
When is charging led is always on but if screen is off and a notification is received it blinks.
When battery saver is on it blinks slowly, if a notification is received it blinks anyway the same way.
I only tested text notification, and I am using Textra, not Android message.

I found the app " light flow" just after reading this page : it enables to manage the led, : which event (battery full/ WhatsApp/messages...) will make the led blink or stay still, obviously no colour management for this phone and unfortunately no possibility to manage blink speed.
