[Kernel][AOSP][ICS] Safe CWM6/TWRP - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

***This kernel is still in active development, and currently in testing, flash at your own risk... I DO NOT currently have this device, if you think that is a hindrance to my ability to develop for it, then wait for someone with the device to make a better kernel. Don't flash this one, then ***** about it not working right. The second post is updated by FrancIsBacon regularly with the status of the test kernels.. and I delete the bad ones as soon as I get negative feedback. If you would like to be more active in testing join us in #ICS-DEV-E4GT on freenode.***
My build process automatically uploads every kernel I build to my goo.im folder, so if you aren't in the testing mood, you should probably read post 2, or maybe the thread a little before flashing one of them...
Here you go, latest installment...

News Update for those that are watching this thread like a hawk: Ever since the a la carte kernels stopped churning out as they had been and chris had started making whole experimental CM9 builds, I had neglected to update. Chris is on his final push before submitting his work to CM in the attempt to get the inclusion of our device into the CM device tree. Really, that is right around the corner. One last major kink to work on, and that's 4G tethering. Once that is fixed, Chris is trying for official.
TL;DR Official CM inclusion hopefully right around the corner!
I see a lot of the same questions being asked throughout the thread, so I'll put up this handy FAQ. People are also seeing chris's newest test kernels on his goo and flashing them. It's fine, and welcomed, but don't expect them all to work. For those who don't want to test out a kernel that isn't confirmed to be working, I will maintain a list of working kernel release candidates at the bottom of this post, unless chris41g starts updating this thread himself with that info.
FAQ:
Q: Will this work on TW roms?
A: No. As stated in the OP, this kernel is for AOSP only.
Q: Will this work with AOKP at all?
A: Please bear in mind that there is no official AOKP for this phone yet, so there are many different builds. Only builds with an AOSP initramfs, like chris41g's AOKP, will work with this kernel. We also have reports that AOKP build M5 by Times_Infinity functions with this kernel, and the TabUI mod runs well with it. Thanks sjsharksfan420!
Q: Will this kernel work with MIUI?
A: There have been some reports of success, but the same issue lies here as with AOKP. There is no official MIUI for our device,so only builds with an AOSP initramfs will work.
Q: What roms will this kernel work for?
A: This kernel has been tested on Cm9 and chris41g's AOKP build and works beautifully on both.
Q: Is this FF18?
A: No. This is a custom kernel built from the kernel source code. FF18 is what was packaged with the OTA.
Q: Which governor/IO scheduler should I use?
A: That is completely up to you. There are positive reports of the pegasusq and sio combo working really well.
Q: What is the default scheduler?
A: CFQ
Q: Can I set the scheduler without a 3rd party app.?
A: Not at this time. Use setcpu or no-frills CPU Control for now. Or any other app you prefer for that matter.
Q: Can we overclock?
A:
chris41g said:
Also this kernel release does not over clock. As I'm trying to merge with the kernel with smdk4210 and hopefully gain inclusion as an officially supported device. I'll release an overclock version when I release a TW version.

Q: Can we underclock?
A: There are reports of instability and boot loops with underclocking. Proceed with caution.
Q: Can we adjust CPU voltage?
A: Not yet. At least, it's not natively supported. There are reports of success with apps like Tegrak Ultimate.
Q: Will this be packaged with cm9?
A: It is now packaged with the nightlies.
Q: Is this kernel 41g certified?
A:

Q: Why are other frequently asked questions not on this list?
A: I didn't see them, or I didn't remember them at the time of writing this. I will update this post if necessary, but if you think something that isn't here should be, let me know and I'll update it.
List of confirmed working kernel release candidates: 41g-CWM-RC13, 41g-TWRP-RC13, and Control 12 ONLY so far. Sorry, forgot to include the control kernel. Chris has stopped butting out a la carte kernels for now and has been cranking out experimental builds. If you want the latest and greatest, flash one of his CM9 builds. As of 8/23/2012 at 10:21 AM, MyspoonisTooBIG is the name of the latest stable build. The builds have reached a point of consistent stability, meaning unless something was wrong with the upload, you should not be having any strange issues or having to deal with dead pets, so flash away.
That's all for now.
Still running beautifully!

Savaged-Zen ROM
RC5 Test Renditions
http://savaged-zen.com
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. The crespo4g build of the Savaged-Zen ROM is currently under testing stages. EXPECT THINGS TO BE BUGGY! If you have issues, please submit issues to the link below.
2. For the TESTING STAGE, the ROM currently includes the latest kernel from mathkid95, the Matr1x kernel. We are working on a Savaged-Zen kernel specifically for the crespo and crespo4g. Please be patient while the other developers on our team get those loose ends tied up
3. Once the crespo4g build is STABLE, this thread will be renamed and reworked to include hosting from our official mirrors. In the meantime, please feel free to contribute by testing or donating. Thank you!
Now that that's done, enjoy the show!
Thank you:
Anyone who has ever submitted code to AOSP development. Without you, projects like these would not be possible. (CyanogenMod, Evervolv, SalvageMod, etc)
Our dedicated Crespo4G testers: jta462, bradart
For helping us set up the repo and countless other reasons: preludedrew
If I forgot anyone for ANY reason, please kindly PM me and I will correct as needed! No need for flame wars.
Savaged-Zen ROM is an AOSP project based on Google's AOSP Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4). We have incorporated some popular tweaks from other AOSP ROMs, as well as added a bunch of our own.
The main focus on this, it to make a lightweight. FAST ROM that is specifically designed to work perfectly with our Kernel. Right now, we are tweaking the ROM and adding our own custom features that you won't find anywhere else.

Thank you for the support everyone!
I will be maintaining the device for the time being, and since I do not own a crespo, my eyes and backend testing work is being done by jta462 who has been extremely helpful so far. (Be sure to thank him as well as this would not be possible without him). Tomorrow, I will have another release, hopefully clearing up the wifi, camera, and mms issues. Tomorrows fixes were brought to my attention by mikeyinid, so a thanks to him is in order as well!
Please stick around ! Love the teamwork of the crespo community thus far.

I honestly haven't looked at the other CM builds but I'd say the biggest differences would be... I've added some tweaks for speed and RAM optimization, minor build prop changes and aero i think uses his kernel as well.
Thank you for including GApps. Not that it's a big deal but I've never quite understood why they are always separated.

Google basically made CM take gapps out. I started including them a while back on my Eris builds and decided I'll keep putting them in until someone tells me I can't anymore. LOL.
its all good do you mind sharing your setup so i can get the max outta this rom?
I'll probably give this a go soon. I think I have Workshed's ROM on my old Eris still lol.
Just a heads up for everyone, the same rule will probably apply for kernels. The only ones that will probably work are the stock CM or Aeroevan's .08 kernels.

Hehe... I haven't had to run this phone overclocked either. It's so much faster than the Eris I don't need to. Besides when I do overclock it I can't really tell that its goin faster. I just noticed the SD card read/write speed is set at 1024, I think you usually set the default higher thought you might wanna know.

I've been setting up my laptop to compile kernels, however I'm not an expert and I was apart from the scene til I got the 300. What version of Ubuntu is best to compile kernels? I got 12.4 set up however I thought I remember a while back people preferred 10.10 or something.
If you could get loop into the kernel that would be awesome. I was trying to install Ubuntu on the tab via a app on the market and it seems the cm9 kernel doesn't have loop so I couldn't get it going. Didn't try the Asus stock ROM yet. Don't have high hopes though.
Other than that the only other tweaks I can think of at the moment would be smartass governor and HAVS, if that's possible. Either way a custom kernel would be bomb.

adbd is running as root, ergo adb remount works. no need to do adb shell and then su
this kernel can only be found in this rom for now, i do plan on making a separate release thread so people with future version of teh kernel can complain to me about how i broke their hearts and phones
Used the old syndicate on the Epic, great ROM, glad to see you guys doing something while we wait for JB CM.
Question though, I see thanking eugene373, is his script included in this ROM? From my personal testing I found I gained no advantage using it and would rather not have something else to worry about playing with my cores for debug reasons. How is it baked into this rom? the script or the apk? (not trying to start any sort of debate on the merits of the script, just don't want it as preference), Just wondering how I will have to go about removing it.

I dont think it is included. I asked as well. But the app is available. Works great for me but would rather have it baked in.
I leave my phone off the charger at night now and charge an hour or so in the morning. then a couple hours after the day is done and that's about how little my phone is plugged in.

[LINK][KERNEL][SOURCE][ICS]FL24 + Agat's tREC_v0.2.2

I've posted an initial FL24 build with Agat's Recovery (with Agat's permission via PM/IM)
After speaking with Agat - and his blessing - we'll be taking over his main kernel efforts.
He'll still be collaborating on the projects but this will hopefully give him more time towards the GS3.
As part of this I'm really trying to push the community kernel effort and get others involved.
So we'll be posting Git Repos and updating the Community Kernel thread as needed.
Kernel Git Repo:
https://github.com/garwynn/D710SPR_FL24_Kernel
Initramfs (includes Recovery) Repo (Updated 1/15/2013):
https://github.com/agat63/E4GT_Multiboot_initramfs
Link to Kernel, Changelog
http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?106
(I'm linking so I only have to modify at one place, for those asking)
Please let us know by posting in this thread if there are any issues so we can work them out! Thanks!

Flashed successfully using mobile odin.
-Paid apps installed.
-Apps on SDcard are still there.
-Wifi works.
-Doesn't have the governor choices yet.
-4g speeds normal.
Since this kernel has FL in it's name and all late FL leaks were for JB roms I think it would be good idea to put ICS in thread name to avoid any confusion.
If flashed with JB rom it won't work and phone won't boot causing panic.
Just a thought.

Edited! :highfive:
As Garwynn mentioned in OP I'll be semy-retiring from E4GT kernel development.
I'll support all my previous threads and kernels as long as they will be in use and will
support Garwynns' effort in his journey on making new kernels for this device.
I'm open to any questions you guys may have as well.
I need more time for my GSIII development and having great guys picking up where I left
will definitely help making the transition process smooth.
I'm sure with support of this great community we will master anything we want.

And so are you. :good:
You have provided us with so many leaks and info that I lost count for.
And I did work with Garwynn in the past and had nothing but good experience every time.
I'm glad he decided to take a plunge on this. The group he put together can do a lot and I'll
try to help them if I can.
Thanks to all of you, garwynn, agat63 and sextape. Cant put into words how great you are.

Kernel source dropped. Not the leak or OTA.
thanks a lot for the time & effort garwynn. props to Agat as well, maybe it's time for a new Linux box...
Just an update, Agat spent a good amount of time merging his FI27 tweaks into this build.
So everyone please give him a BIG thanks for this time!
He's also asked to change the repository used for initramfs so I have updated OP.
Will be updating community kernel thread to reflect.
New version to be released today after I can compile.
Version 0.2.0 posted in .ZIP and .TAR formats.
More stuff coming today as time allows.

First link (to SXTP Developers) has the links to the .tar and .zip files.
I'm just linking to it from this thread so that I'm not having to update 3+ threads each time we post an update.
...which BTW 0.3.0 will be posting today.
Also on another note: Seeing as FL24 is most certainly our final ICS build... I'll probably make a one click with this inside at some point. Don't want to rush to it yet though as I we're still merging FI27 tweaks onto this kernel.
