Straight Talk HSPA+ Issue ? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am trying to get Straight Talk working on my newly arrived Galaxy nexus HSPA+ unlocked (gsm) from the Play Store.
I get H+ and pretty good signal too (tested on Speedtest since it worked for a small amount of time, and got good signal strength in bars)...however I am having issues. As I sit here watching my phone I see it go from HSPAP to UTMS to HSDPA back to HSPAP and the cycle repeats. I tried messing with radios to no avail. I flashed H+ mod from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763059) so I could more easily see it happening, and sure enough it shows it happening there too.
My APN is set to the same I used on the XT910 for Straight Talk, which was included in the SIM guide and on Straight Talk's site.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Well this thread got buried quickly...

[Q] Signal strength on Tmobile USA

I have the Galaxy nexus unlocked and am using it on T-mobile USA, it seems like i am getting 4G (HSPA) coverage less than when I was using my G2X. I was wondering if anyone else was feeling this way? I was also wondering if anyone has gone into the hidden menu (*#*#4636#*#*) under Phone info and experimented with changing the Preferred network type at all? I am currently set to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) i tried changing it to WCDMA prefered, but it wont stick. I know we have done that in the past for other T-mobile 4G phones to tell the phone to always connect to 4G unless no 4G signal is present.
i too feel like its bad signal on the nexus, i changed to wcdma only though
Did yours stick? I tried to change mine, but if I go back into the hidden menu after I change it, its back to GSM/CDMA auto. My changes dont save......
i'm not noticing any difference from my nexus one really. also not noticing much better download speeds either.
mine sticks for sure
Did you do anything special? I go into the drop down menu select WCDMA preffered, then hit the back button to exit the hidden menu right? There is no save option or anything that Im missing right?
Just tried it again. I can pick WCDMA only and it will stick, but WCDMA prefered wont stick. Interesting....
are you guys getting better signal with WCDMA only or about the same?
i get really crappy 3G reception and sometimes it's so bad that i have to force my phone to stay on edge just so i can make phonecalls.
My phone constantly displays the H, but my speeds are down right despicable. Its near dial up status

I've had no problems with the GN on T-Mobile's network without changing any of the internal settings. In both New York and Arizona I've been getting 3 - 5 Mbps consistently, with peaks of up to 7 Mbps.
One thing I've noticed is that the radio switches to 3G when I'm not using data, but when I load a webpage or ask for data it switches to HSPA+. This is probably to save the battery life, so I'm not complaining.
This seems a relevant place. I just bought my GSM Nexus yesterday on Amazon and got it today. T-Mobile SIM card plugged in, I get terrible reception. I have no signal at all where I'm sitting, whereas my Vibrant and my G2 both had at worst 3G connection.
I'm not a clever man, but I know something is up. I haven't rooted or done anything to my phone. Is there something that I must do to get the phone to work properly?
To reiterate: I have done absolutely nothing but put in the SIM card.
Try a different baseband (search the GN forums for details)…
With the latest baseband (XXLA2) I seem to have better signal than I did on my nexus-s, and the nexus-s did pretty good.

Well, I had the same issue a couple of days ago. But the issue was not with the phone....it was with the signal tower. You should call Verizon and see what's going on. Sometimes there are areas where 4G signals are also weak. I spent one night at South Beverly Drive and Wilshire in Los Angeles, and I got no 4G signal whatsover. If you live by the area where there are lots of tall buildings, you probably won't get any data signals. So you might wanna check both.
My first Nexus would lose all signal at random, even if I was in an area with 4 bars of 4G. Swapping the SIM card out didn't work, so I swapped the phone out.
The new one works perfectly in a 4G area, but in a 3G-only area (like where I live), it will drop its data connection a lot. It keeps voice, but the 3G icon disappears. Switching into CDMA-only mode didn't help. Flashing the 4.0.3 radios didn't help. I use a lot of data, so I'm left wondering whether I should swap this phone out, or just give up on having a Nexus.
I don't experience any connectivity issues so far(I live in Fullerton, California), and my brother, 2 of my friends, friends' friend, my girlfriend and her little brother!
It started after the 4G outage... Could have that hurt my phone? I highly doubt it but you never know...hmmm to verizon when I get back home from vacation
EDIT: Been on CDMA and it seems to be working, low bars, but seems to be. Maybe its verizon's network where I am, ill check again tomorrow. Hope its working this is really making me sad I really do love my nexus
Could it be your modem/radio? I'm using a GSM nexus, but I had loads of signal drops on the KK1 modem till I updated to the KK6 modem

I was wondering the same thing. Mine has been sporadic since the outages while my wife's charge is rock solid. I have tried to lose a signal with her charge and it won't do it. 3g is awful on my nexus. It'll be there for a minute or two then gone. Really frustrating cause I love this phone

I've been seeing the same thing but it seems to only happen when I'm on LTE. Example...I just went out and was in a 4G coverage area with full signal. Around every 15-20 minutes I would lose all form of signal for about 30 seconds and it would come back. I've found that switching to CDMA only allows me to maintain a solid connection. During the period that I was experiencing the outages my girlfriends RAZR has been rock solid. Looks like I may be spending some time on the phone with Verizon tomorrow.

Any reception signal issues with AT&T Samsung galaxy s3

Some of the people who own a the S3 on Verizon are reporting issues with reception between 3G and LTE especially the handoff between CDMA and lte. Is anyone who has this phone on AT&T experiencing similar issues?
I'm not having any issues using the LTE apn (default).

Sprint Galaxy S3 network connection issues
Good day everyone. I just recently purchased a New Galaxy S3 from a local Spint store. I have been a loyal Sprint customer for 15 years. I have owned many different phones (Star-Tac, Sony, Touch-pro 1-2, Evo, EVO 4G) Over the past 2 weeks since buying the S3, I've noticed a SERIOUS drop in network connectivity, both Data & Cell for absolutely no reason. Now, stop me if I'm wrong, but on my Evo 4G, I could connect to the internet EVEN if I didn't have a 3g signal... As long as I had Cell bars, I could access the web no problem. So the S3 is giving me some headaches and I've seen on other forums that others are too. These people are on diffferent carriers too.
So here's my issue. When I'm in a GOOD STRONG Sprint network, I've been attempting to access the web (Google Store or You-Tube) and have seen the 3g or 4G icon on the bar show data up/downloading then WINK, they dissappear and I get a "No connection RETRY" window. I've made many changes, selected CDMA instead of CDMA/LTE, vice-cersa. I've updated PRL, Profile, Firmware and even have the new Jelly Bean 4.1.1
I've contacted Samsung and "Chatted" with a technician, but this person had NO clue of this issue... I gave them the links to this and other Android forums...
So do I take it back? Revert back to my Evo? I have to say, the speed and versatility on the S3 when it's good, is GREAT, but I'm not one to have some half good, especially one so expensive...
Any imput is appreciated... :fingers-crossed:

I get stellar reception and speeds in major cities and highways throughout the state. Honestly I've never seen my phone drop to 3G but I'm not in rural areas often. I have see speedtests as high as 65mb down in Austin.
Nope nope nope.. All well n good

Out in a 4G area here in Minneapolis, MN. It might have been a fluke with CM10, but my signal would cut in and out every 30 minutes or so. Flashed AOKP and it works fine, but it was weird.

[Q] unlocked t889 + straight talk at&t sim

I purchased a Straight Talk AT&T sim to use on my unlocked Note II (T889). I get service, but its staying right at 1 bar of edge, or dropping constantly. ATT has great service where I live, and my phone seems to hate picking up on it!
Is there anything I can do to try to get that signal better?
Has anybody else been able to successfully use this phone with straight talks att sim?
Thanks
I did test the ST at&t in my area on the unlocked GN2, the speed was very low no matter the settings.

Make sure you have the correct APN settings for straight talk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487293
Also I did the reverse (At&t to T-mobile). This thread may help if changing the APN doesn't work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
I have this setup and its very fast, almost as fast as t mobile and a bit more consistent.
If you use the APN settings normally recommended by straight Talk try leaving it blank for proxy, seems to make data speed much faster.

Thanks for the responses.
I have tried just about everything, I've come to the conclusion that I should have found a micro sim to test BEFORE i purchased straight talk. My area just doesn't get the at&t 3g signal. Figuring out how to enable LTE on the phone wouldn't do me any good either as LTE isn't supported on straight talk.
What sucks the most....1 mile north or south of my house...and the 4g icon shows with full strength.
If anybody thinks of anything new, please let me know!

Don't put the proxy info in. That helped my connect speed.

LTE everywhere EXCEPT New York City; Verizon says Buy a new phone. What?

I'm using a Toro Nexus that was recently given to me by a coworker and it works great everywhere except where I live and work. It simply refuses to connect to LTE within NYC, where it stays on 3G. As soon as I get outside of the city it has great LTE connectivity which allows me to make use of my unlimited data plan.
I started out stock, then flashed to 4.4, 5.1 and even tried the latest experimental ROMs without any change. Verizon did whatever testing they do on their end and said that, because of the buildings in NYC, the phone is incapable of receiving LTE. That sounded like a crock of crap to me so, using a few of my remaining grey cells, I put my sim card into my wife's Galaxy Note 3 and, voila! no more LTE.
So I'm getting ready to make an angry call to Verizon when I think, why not try the wife's sim in my Toro. Result: 3G only. Pop it back into the Note: LTE.
Dang! Can anyone offer some insight as to what is going on?
Thanks for any help.

When you go to Settings, what is the signal strength reported?
I have a ex-VZW GNex (toro) that I have moved to Tracfone; I have every reason to believe that Tracfone uses (mostly) T-Mobile towers in my area, and I have ALWAYS had signal-strength issues via T-M towers. (Tracfone has towers assigned to it on a zip-code basis, and it's not always T-Mobile; in some zip codes, Tracfone uses VZW towers.) It could well BE tower-siting issues plaguing VZW in the Apple - which is, amazingly, smack dab in VZW's turf.
I wish there was a way to determine exactly WHICH tower that a phone aims at while on the move - so you can find "bum towers".
