I usually one click back to el29, install CWM, and then flash another ICS rom but it's very time consuming. Is there a faster and safe way?
What I did was nandroid my gingerbread system. Then I can flash whatever I want and restore gingerbread whenever I want to go back.

Restoring a GB nandroid on an ICS ROM won't cause the phone to brick?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
It can. I'd suggest just keeping chris41gs ICS aosp/tw kernels in SD card. That way you can just Odin his kernel (if you're not already using it) and flash whatever from there

so i got a question that ties into that statement. i am about to use the auto root tool to get cwm. i am currently on stock ics rooted. would i be able to flash whatever rom i choose without having to one click back to a GB Build?
(this used to be way easier on my OG Evo, lol)

Yes you would. Just install FF18-CWM-agat-src kernel. Of course make a backup first just in case you get into trouble but I have been doing it over and over with no issues... So far

My understanding is that recovery stays in a separate partition and whatever you do to it does not affect getting an OTA, is that right?
Also, what if my phone is rooted using the Zerg exploit or whatever method, can I still get an OTA?
So basically I think my questions is, what ultimately decides whether my phone can get an OTA, or not?
if you are on stock ROM, you will get it just fine
but you might loose ROOT after it finish the upgrade
if you are on Custom ROM, you wont get OTA
You can get the ota even on a custom ROM. As long as you have the stock recovery.

How would you have a custom ROM with stock recovery? I've never rooted a Samsung phone since this is my first and I'm waiting to root it, so unless Samsung is different I don't see how.

I'm sure within a couple days there will be a custom rom with the new features. that's an assumption but its always been like that on other phones I have had. Hopefully that's the case with this phone also.
I have stock rooted ROM with CWM recovery, is that okay? Or do I have to have a stock recovery?

you will get the notification for the ota, your phone will download it but when it boots into recovery to flash it and its not the stock recovery, it will just give an error and you will probably have to pull the battery to reboot. i did this on the nexus s. if i remember right i never got the ota notififcation again either after it failed.
I know there are methods out there that can flash the entire phone back to stock (kernel, ROM, recovery) but that involves wiping everything. Is there a way to flash back the stock recovery only since I'm already on stock ROM and kernel?
Big thanks...
I wonder where it puts the update after it downloads it. Would be nice to grab it and maybe install without reverting to stock...

I think you can just Nandroid back (I haven't had trouble doing that before) but it might cause some problems. If you want the safest route, Odin back.

Odin full restore back to stock, use sfhub's auto root, then add recovery, reboot to recovery, nandroid back to your GB ROM. Also you don't have the annoying yellow triangle.

Mobile Odin works. I just flashed a GB recovery/kernel combo and wiped from there. The bricks are coming from the use of using CWM bundled with an ICS kernel. If you do any flashing with a GB kernel/recovery, you'll be good to go.
Note: You wont be able to boot on ICS with a GB kernel, so just boot into recovery if you choose that route.

Only bricks I've seen are from using Rom Manager and the temp CWM Touch. Kernel Repacks are fine for going back and forth between GB and ICS.

HOW are we taking risks? It's been clearly stated in several threads that the problem lies with RomManager and temp recoveries.. not with repacks.

For that I would read how to not brick your phone here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495
and make sure that your in a safe recovery. Agats recovery is safe for ICS restore and flashing. so to restore a back up flash the kernel in odin/mobile odin boot into Recovery then restore back up.
Our phone uses ext4 file system. Don't have to worry about bml vs mtd like the og epic. No worries though I was wondering the same thing when I made the switch a few months back
Just make sure you read up on the emmc bug before you flash any roms as that can cause hard bricks.

If you are on Stock GB then your fine its a safe recovery. Flash GB to GB or GB to ICS. ICS to ICS or ICS to GB is another matter Agat's kernel(TW) and Chris41g kernel(AOSP) are safe for ICS. ICS to GB i'd use EL26 Direct boot kernel to GB recovery and restore or flash GB rom's from. Odin or Mobile odin work.
I keep reading about everyone using CWM EL26 recovery so my question is, can I odin that recovery over my current agat one? If not how will I go about it? Also my nandroid of my stock rom will still be available when switching recoveries or do I need to go back to stock, switch recoveries then do another nandroid? I am fairly new to samsung so I want to be safe.....thanks.

I'm totally new to Samsung too. I use HTC. But I got my mom a gnex and rooted it with a custom recovery to maintain it properly for her. Maintaining Sammy is different from maintaining HTC.

(Sorry if I'm asking a repetitive question.)
Does the leak GB27 match the official GB27 that just came out?
I'm on FL24 stock + root. I don't want to use flash an unrooted FL24, download Kies, update to GB27, then root it.
Wondering if I can just use the One-Click method from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191954
so I can avoid doing all that work and still have the same result.
I'm only asking because I read that GB27 repartitions the storage (or something like that).
I did what you didn't want to do. Some people stated that they are the same but I don't know for sure. I'm having problems accessing the settings and I wanted root back so I just flashed the no data on top of all this. My settings is still messed up and crashes.
