Anyone else having an issue with their signal. I'm coming from a s2 I had signal at home and always had 4g. I'm in the sonic rom. I loose 4g and signal at home often.

Youre not the only one. The problem is there seems to be more interference when holding the phone at the bottom where the antennas are in particular with your left hand. When there is more skin contact to the bottom left of the phone is where the problem starts. If you go to Settings> about device > status you can check the db signal as you hold the phone. You will notice a huge spike at the minimum of 10dbm (higher the dbm the worse the signal) which is enough to cause 4g signal loss and down to edge if you're already in a low signal area. Now try holding the phone upside down and to where the bottom of the phone is exposed and not making any skin contact and you will barely see any dbm change and 4g acquisition is better. You can try to perform the same test with you s2 and you probably wont see the dbm go up as much as the s3.
The only other option maybe is to get a case. There are other threads about this already but I'm using tapatalk app so I cant go to my subscribed section to repost them without discarding this reply.

I noticed this too since I got the phone over a week ago.
I think maybe it's the micro sim card because I've never had this problem with any other phone.
And I don't know if it's the death grip because I'm always on my blue tooth.
I went to Tmobile today and they didn't really do much, they said to exchange the phone.
I don't know if that's gonna do much good.

That could be it. My previous phone with T-Mo had been acting weird the past month. All bars but couldn't make calls or text, and no internet from home, mostly in the mornings. Had to switch carries.

I can confirm that my SGS2 has a better signal than my SGS3. It is about 5dBm weaker. At least that is what the signal strength says. The key thing is the the SGS3 switches to EDGE because of a perceived weak signal (-110dBm) and it does switch back until you are in a stronger signal area. I was able to have a decent 4G signal even if my signal was -101 to -110 dBm. I could get a 4mb/s download and 1.5mb/s upload connection on speedtest. So the SGS3 does not need to switch to EDGE. My SGS2 shows a stronger signal so it doesn't switch at all. I suspect if I could lock my phone to 4G only I would be able to have similar reception as my SGS2. Maybe a future radio update will fix this. On my side I redecided to return the phone and get a replacement SGS3. Maybe that will work better.

That is the only way to fix this issue. It is more then just loosing the signal by holding the phone wrong. I live in a very fast T-Mobile area and getting around 20 MB down and 5 MB up. I will see all my bars drop without even touching the phone. This does not happen with any other of my T-Mobile phnes. I always hav e all bars all the time at my house. This is a serious problem that needs to be fixed.
I am sending my phone back in the AM and if the new one has the same issue I will not keep it. Too bad this is a killer phone with a lousy problem.

I have the same problem... Mine actually loses 4g and loses entire signal in the middle of street where I should have 90% signal. This also disconnects any active calls and after a minute or two, signal is back. Then again the cycle repeats every 5 minutes for all day...
I blame the modem. I live in an area where we actually have pretty damn strong and fast reception (Southern Cali..). But I too have noticed that it like to flip a lot for no apparent reason. But my Samsung Vibrant did the same thing depending which modem you used. And the modems that performed the best with that phone were impacted greatly by the region in which you were trying to use it. For instance, here in Southern Cali I felt like overall KB5 had the most consistent, and data powerful signal. But in some areas of Boston I felt that KA7 was a clear winner. It's brand new. Just be patient and give them a few weeks to kinda analyze and address the most pressing issues. And I'm sure that they'll roll out a new modem with that update. I believe there were 12 total when they stopped officially updating the Vibrant.. So there will be options ;]

Yes you can.
About 3 months ago, I put a complaint I believe was in the FCC website, sprint immediatelly contacted me and kept on bugging me regarding the issue. I think the government agency really gets on their case.
After a month, I got them to give me a new phone, from EVO 3d to the Epic and didnt resolve the issue, they now credited me for $50 since I have absolutely no signal where I work and a promise to work on the issue, so the FCC let go of buggint them, but the issue still there, so now I should and will put another complaint with FCC, for 3g speeds and another one for the lack of signal for voice again!
That's the thing, many people have issues but do not complain with the FCC only with sprint. Once we start complaining with the FCC, they actually start doing something about it.

You are will aware that with an airave you can change it so only authorized phone numbers can connect. Also, pretty sure that Sprint isn't responsible for providing excellent coverage inside your office building (Perhaps it is different if you held a business account). Keep in mind that the building structure also comes into play because the frequency might not be able to penetrate the building, which in this case the FFC can't do anything to sprint legally because it already providing the service but the structure reflects/weaken the signal by the time to penetrates the building walls.
The above is just my opinion on Sprint Service, while they are held liable to provide good signal in your home address and nearby area.
@Darrien13 I believe they are doing network vision so that would affect your service big time for a while. In my city, there was no service for approximately 3 days while they were upgrading the towers for N.V.

@Everyone posting Network vision affecting their current 4G wimax.
The 4G has nothing to do with network vision. 4G towers are operated by clearwire. Their might be maintenance being done to the towers, expect 4G speeds on wimax to drop though, since Virgin mobile/Boost mobile will be getting 4G wimax phones.

Sprint said last month they are upgrading towers until middle of June.the lady let slip that, "hey 4g is off line there right now" i stated we have never had 4g. I've been noticing allot of towers going up and actions happening near all the cell sites. I'm in temecula. But i informed her i travel around and she stated everything should smooth out mid/late June. This was April 8th. Tech support called several times to verify changes they were making in my town.helped a little.
I tried to all her about lte, she said she was reading an internal note about the area.

Had same issues in Fort Lauderdale. Was horrible! I got the same story of maintenance on towers and 4G was offline. They gave me $50 credit for each line on my account. Told me to call back after May 10th if issues still remain.
When I am 2 feet from a BIG window, in front of a open wide pershing square, I think I do have to have a signal. At least a signal. I have nothing no bars, not connection, nothing. I even tought there was a jammer nearby, but a sprint rep came to check, and said that it does not look like and that I was definatelly in a spot to get a signal.
Would I move to the center of the building, I get a VERY STRONG signal.

i get 4/5 bars at my location. Ive always had good signal throughout NorthCounty SD until now. IDK if i messed up some deep internel setting or maybe fried my antenna because sprint says theres no network issues in the area so hope i can get some help.

what ive also noticed is when i get a solid connection on 3g it will run all day and night i just do my little calberating signal dance and the bad is if i switch to wifi and then back to 3g my 3g will start acting the way the logcat logged phone responding in previous post.

Its likely just a network thing. Same this happened last Spring when I was in Austin. They were doing some network updates and 3g was plain garbage for a few months in areas where it was previously good, worse in others. Then all of a sudden it was fine again. Still Sprint though lol
I guess you could try other modems. Have you done this yet.
The bars are no indication of Sprint 3g reception. The bars indicate VOICE reception. You'll need to go to settings and look at the signal strength in dbm in order to check it out.
Also ... Sprints network is almost universally slow (sub 100 kbps) except in low demand areas, areas where there has been band aid fixes (extra T1 lines), and areas where network vision upgrades have been completed (1.5mbps -> 2.0 mbps on average).
As stated, if you're in an area undergoing NV upgrades then 3g and reception can be wonky as they fix up the towers.
I agree, sprint is slow. I don't think its any specific device/radio/rom. Slow is slow. Even if a speed test app says I'm getting blazing fast 3G, I still can't browse fast worth a damn.

Ive tried this twice and it works im gonna try it maybe 10 more times just to see if thats it. Please if you try post your results as well

PR is a NV market and deployment is going pretty rapidly. LTE is popping up in a lot of places and fiber/micro back haul has dramatically increased 3g speeds. Won't be suprised if they finished upgrading the entire market by early next year.
Anyways...this is what sprints 3g network will look like once they finish the NV upgrades... not the sub 100 kbps connections we get ...
Updated Original Post with some more Info on ipv6 and linked video to googles june 6 2012 open ipv6 deployment and explaination about pastebin links.

That is great and what I expected by now for 3g speeds in major USA cities. The best 3g I have seen is about 1.25Mbps
Ive had my issues with this phone also. The questions i had was 1 Sprint? 2 The phones radio 3 rom/kernal/modem. I live in a real good sprint area. i usually run 1-2.5mb down. I do notice that all 3 epic touches ive owned had wacky radios. Signal goes up and down. That is part of problem. Ive had some roms/ kernals that WOULD not have any good speed at all. I was just on a rom and source kernal and Speeds were terrible. At the same same location i flashed back to stock and used kies to update to bone stock fi27 and poof 2mbps down where it was 200k max. Try stock and see. Also the speed test app IS a joke. its awful. Try this test it seems to be very reliable. http://i.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.html The screen shot below is in my house for some reason i get very low signal but outside its 4/6 bars. Still 1.4 mb down! I blame the ****ty at&t EDGE tower 100 ft from house.
I notice the fi27 modem goes to sleep and has trouble waking up. Not an issue with fh13 which is neck n neck tie for best modem with el29.
Okay, I'm having a dilemma. I don't know whether to switch to T-mobile and have access to all the good unlocked phones with tons of development or stay with Verizon and deal with their ****ty tactics on trying to stop people from modifying their own devices.
People who are on T-mobile, how are HSPA+ signals and call quality? How often do calls drop? I currently attend the University of North Dakota and I'm afraid that if I switch to T-mobile, I will get terrible reception and data signals here. Can you guys inform me if there's any good T-mobile signals in the Eastern North Dakota area?
On the other hand, Verizon's signals are fantastic. I get full 4G in my area and call quality is terrific. But as well know, Verizon likes to lock down devices and put logos on home buttons to piss the modding community off.
What do you think? I would like some input on this because I have to make a big decision - whether to stay on Verizon and have my parents pay for my current line or switch to T-mobile and pay everything myself.
Thanks!
Wow. Free sounds better to me.

Errr, I mean yeah it does but my parents want me out of it and pay for my own bill soon lol
Anyway, that family share plan is annoying and it keeps me from wanting to do some heavy tethering. I only get 8 GB of data a month and I share it with 5 other people so data gets built up pretty quick.
Of course free is always better. But if your parents are looking to kick you off I would go with t mobile. Verizon is way too damn expensive. I live in Orlando Florida and my speeds range from 10mb to 25mb. Upload speed stays constant at around 2mb.
I don't really have dropped calls. As long as I have bars which is 99% off the time my call quality is good, unless the other person has ****ty service then no matter how good of service you have the quality will be lower.
So if your on a budget and want more go with t mobile. But if you got money to blow then stay with Verizon.

Been with T-mobile since Voicestream days, 12 years now. I'm not going no where, I love the freedom where I can buy any GSM phone available in the market, plus the plans too are cheaper. I love my Magenta
Unless you don't have signal cuz their WiFi calling is f**king worthless. I've been trying to send a text for 2 hours. Even Verizon can at least get a text through at my house.
You are going to have to do your due diligence and research coverage in your area. In the areas that T-Mobile has coverage (mostly urban/suburban areas) they are well worth the effort (great prices, great phones, no locked bootloaders) to find out if they have coverage.
If not Verizon unfortunately, may be the better choice because they have coverage in more areas.

In all fairness these phones are on Verizon as well.

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile (with a stop at Sprint in-between), and I don't notice any difference in terms of calls.
I use WIFI calling at home since it's my only option - Verizon was the only tower that gave even 1/2 bar in my house (the reason I initially chose Sprint). However, my personal experience with WIFI calling has been great - I even have used it over my school's WIFI (a bit of an accident) and the call quality is always remarkably clear - enough so that I notice it.
The city that I work and go to college in is covered in 4G towers - I have never had a situation other than at home where I was without coverage (and, to be fair, my house is down in a small valley with thick tree coverage on the lot). If I were you, I'd take a look at their coverage maps to get an idea for what's it's like where you are.

How???? I just got the red WiFi calling error and it's been dropping all day and night for the last week. It goes blue and as soon as I send a text it drops service.
The support thread on tmo has over 31,000 views...
I've had trouble with it when the WIFI signal is 2 bars or less on the indicator (like if I am in the garage), but otherwise haven't had an issue - I've even made quite long calls from it - it's been on and blue (sent + received some texts) since I got home about six hours ago.
My only observation is that it needs a rather strong connection, though I don't know if this could be part of the source of issues others might be having.

Did you set your address up in your T-Mo account? If you call 911 for example through Wi-Fi calling, they want an address on file or some crap like that. I had to do that back when I was on TouchWiz. (gave me the red thing)

I haven't had an issue as well. It might be your router. If I go outside to the back yard I will get an occasional drop because the router is in the other end of the house but all is great here with blue all day long.
OP I moved from Verizon to T mobile a while back. I'm in LA so coverage doesn't effect me as much. Never looked back.

T-Mobile fits my needs, I live in suburban Atlanta, and I get really good data speeds. Have had NO issues with call drops. Customer support has been pretty good to me. My only issue is when I go some where rural. In those situations I get 2g or no bars. In my opinion, I'm satisfied with T-Mobile. I'm on a shared line with my brother and we pay 130 together for 1000 minute, unlimited text and unlimited data.

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile 2 years ago and im loving it, much cheaper and the signal and data is just as good as verizon minus LTE is a tad faster but T-Mobile is selling a couple thousand towers and getting 4G LTE ones in 2013

Damn. Just did research on data/signal coverage in the Grand Forks, ND area and sadly Tmobile has no coverage. All the other 3 carriers do. What a bummer. Guess I have to stick with VZW

Yea T Mobile is not a widespread carrier compared to Verizon but if t mobile supports your area then its great

Is anyone else out there experiencing weak LTE reception? I had an iphone 5 for 10 days and although the experience of IOS 6 for a long time android user was disappointing, the 4G signal reception was amazing. in spots where I had LTE with the iphone i no longer have it with the LGOG. and when I do get an LTE connection there's a few problems:
1. incorrect 'bars' to represent signal strength (which I saw a few on this forum have seen)
2. LTE signal will jump in and out sporadically especially when driving.
3. In my office where I had 2 LTE bars with the IP5 I now have only 3G, with a crazy exception: i'll leave the phone down on the desk for a few mins and when I go to unlock the phone, i'll have a smidgen of LTE! but soon after the 4G drops out and switches back to 3G. (see below pics of before and after I pick up the phone)

I looked up the interwebs to see if there was a difference in where the LTE antennas were placed between the IP5 and the LGOG. The Rx antennas of both devices are placed in the bottom corner of each phone. I thought maybe I was suffering some kind of LTE 'antenna gate' by holding it wrong or something but it's doesn't seem to be the case.
could it be the construction? i'm no physicist but maybe the aluminum body of the IP5 makes it easier for signals to penetrate into the phone than the glass/plastic body of the LGOG?
what do you guys think? any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Seems to be the lgog. Samsung 3 gets better reception on Sprint also. My coworkers get a stronger signal in the same part of the bldg. I just figured Sprint is squeezing signal by device.

I do not have LTE in my area, but I do know that the signal bars do not represent 4g signal strength, that is voice signal.

I've had lte since around Aug sept time frame, during which time I've had the evo lte, s3, I5, and this. By far this has the worst radio of them all lte sucks on it
Edit
Let me reword my statement. As far as lte reception this phone is horrendous the bars displayed when on lte are for lte. But the radio won't pull more than 86dbm standing 100 yards away from a known sprint tower. This phone will take a few minutes to pick up lte were as other phones would pick up lte as soon as I hit an lte area, ultimately this phone is one radio update away from having great signal because it's all in the tuning of the radio. And it's 6 is a huge disappointment just as the frequent drooped calls I got while on the iphone. One last thing I blame the reception issues on LG, it's in sprints best interest to get people off of its aging 3g network

I just got the phone on Sunday 1.6.13. If you were in my position would you return the phone and wait it out?
Edit:
I'd be going back to my original EVO 4g since there's no phone out right now that can match the speed of the UI experience of the LGOG.

To tell the truth it's all up to you if I had an extra 200 laying around I would've taken this back and gotten the note. It depends on how big of an issue it is to you right now I'm dealing with it. It just sucks when I drive around and see I'm on 3g when I know sprint has lte at my location. Usually all it takes for me to connect to lte is to toggle airplane mode on and off I was hoping zv9 came with a radio update but it didn't
Honestly I get poor 3g reception a lot with this phone. Haven't dropped any calls really. Compared to my epic at work I get spotty 3g. I used to have no problem with it. My girls gs3 gets both 3g and 4g better than this phone. Just hope they get a fix soon.

it truly is the ONLY thing I can complain about this phone. the faux chrome trim is a little tacky but that's negligible. well I still have 9 days before I have to return it...maybe a miraculous fix will come around by then. if not, out she goes and i'm back to my evo.
I'm getting really bad reception too, and its really disappointing since I bought the phone specifically for 4G. Looks like it'll be going back since no one has a solution.
My LTE is also weak which is my only real complain about this phone. I'm within my 30 day return policy with Best Buy. I'm still thinking of keeping it because I'm always on wifi. My dilemma is I've been through all of sprints flagship devices already and this 1 is actually better than all of them. Nothing's currently out there that I would swap it for.
I might ante up the extra 100 dollars and just get the note 2, which I previously own and enjoyed it but just didn't like the size.

I really like my Note II, if it was about an inch smaller I'd keep it. Great reception, great battery life, and great performance. My only problem with this phone is the reception, which is terrible.
Just got done talking to sprint over the community and the signal issue many people are having trouble with they said I need to get my phone run through diagnostics for antenna malfunction which I think is b.s. cause my phones are acting up my sister in laws LG Machs are doing the same as well as my friends s5s and s4s so its obviously a problem connected to there towers and the way I see it they need to start getting everything done right otherwise I'm headed to verizon

Opposite here, guess it depends on your area. Mine is better than ever but right before the 4.4 update it was horrid. I think they're trying to overhaul their network now so it might be shaky for a bit.

Sprint is updating its network vision for your area. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
This is all I ever hear out of those outsourced folks from India.
also, in california, my 4g and 3g always alternate depending on which part of town im at. Its rediculous.
Never had the data issues when I was on stock 4.1.2.
For me, a solution that is temporary may be leaving mobile data on, don't turn it off. Power phone off and power on again. Wait for data to connect.
I did that and my data seemed to be stable, but if you turn your data off and leave it off for a while and turn it on again, it'll become unstable again.

My data on kit Kat is better than ever. 4.3 was horrible and 4.1.2 was pretty good
I'll also bet they are doing tower upgrades. Be patient sprint is overall the best.
If you go to Verizon you may have a good signal but it's will cost you about 30% more in cost and you'll constantly have to
Monitor your data.

When I call customer service I get connected with an office in Shreveport where I speak to Americans. Sorry to inform you that they're typically not any more knowledgeable than the people you're referring to. The good thing is that I get to speak to people at all. When I was on AT&T that was often an incredibly difficult thing to do. The last time I spoke with Sprint's customer service, it was in regards to how horrible my cell signal is at my house. The lady told me that they were indeed updating their system in my area and were expecting it to be 100% completed in the first part of June. I'm waiting to see how that goes before complaining any further.

Hahahaha. Yeah that's the story I've heard for the last 2 years. Sprint LTE is a joke. I regularly get sub 10k speeds with 4G connection. Enter a building and it's back to 1x. Come July I have 2 GS3s for sale and it's buhbye Sprint after 10+ years of broken promises.

Must be location related. I live in the middle of nowhere, in a forest nonetheless, and in my house I get 1 bar of 3G. On my back porch I get 2 bars of LTE, but in town I get full LTE. It's slightly less signal than I got at home on AT&T but then I was paying almost twice as much for only 2 gigs of data. But, I suppose the grass is always greener... :sly:
Just updated to 4.4 and data connection seems to be stable. When I was on 4.3 the past 3 weeks it would shift to 3G a few times but I think Sprint is upgrading our towers. On 4.4 its gone down a few times to 3G but I'm banking on the Towers.
Ive been on 4.4.2 for a few weeks now and my devices ability to hold onto a signal has gone down considerably. Previously I had to roam at my house. (We live in the country) Now a lot of time I have no signal at all! There's nothing to be done about it so I just use wifi and don't worry about it.
My data keeps going from 4GLTE to 3G no matter where I go unless I reboot my phone.
