Hi guys, I've seen on Engadget that Google Maps just got bike directions but it doesn't show in the directions menu. Any idea how to enable it? Cheers
I think its been on there for a while. I just used them earlier just select a spot you want to go to and hit get directions then you can choose walking, bicycle, car and metro
That's what I thought as well but I only have the car, the bus and walking. Tried to clear all the data and still nothing.
This may sound silly but have you updated your Maps app?

Yeah. I've tried to uninstall it and reinstall but was unable to. Do u guys have the bike option available?

Bump, same here. Have even tried to install from scratch (both takju and yakju builds), but still it only shows Car / Pubtran / Walk buttons.
Works like a charm (under the same gmail account, so its NOT a gmail accnt setting issue either) on my Nexus 7 tablet.
WTH ?

Mine is working fine. I am on a custom rom though. I'm pretty sure it was working before rooting too.
The exact same thing has happened to me since ive owned the galaxy nexus. I have been holding out and hoping that one of those maps updates will fix our problem. A good work around is if you go to maps and type in the search bar what you are looking for and select it from the map or if you go to google places on your web browser it works ok. Not really a good solution but its worked for me.
Are you sure you guys are allowing access? When you first run it you have to grant it access. Could be in the background when you pull the drop down.

Yeah when I search in maps it works but in the places app no dice. Kinda sucks. I wonder if I uninstall it and reinstall will fix it.

Worth a try for sure. I use that app all the time if I'm out of town.
I checked and I had the same problem. I resolved it by going to:
Settings>apps>Maps> then I cleared the cache and uninstalled the updates. I went to the market and updated back to the current version and everything works fine now.
Oh how I love Android and all of it's little glitches. I see them as an opportunity to figure things out.

Took me quite some time to figure this one out, thought I should post it here in case anyone else has a similar problem.
When I updated to Android 4.1.2, I noticed that my Google Navigation stopped working. It would simply sit there endlessly "Waiting for location..." Fortunately, there's a simple fix:
1. Go to "Settings > Accounts > Google > Location Settings".
2. Flip the switch to "On" (I found this was off in my case).
3. Try Google Navigation again, it should work fine.
I'm not sure why Google decided to break up the location settings into two different places like this, but it's a bit silly IMO as it's definitely going to catch some people out.
You probably cleared the Google Services Framework at some point. When you do that, it disables location services.
Makes sense. It's still a good thing to let people know about it.
It's good to know that I wasn't the only one with this issue factory reset did the thing for me.
I have a different issue
hi
My issue is different.
After the update I am not able to download updates from Google play.
It tells me that the connection to the server has been timed out.
|I cleared the Cache of Google play, but did not helped.
Any ideas?
The issue with GPS was present on update from ics to jb as well and also on 4.0 to 4.0.x and fix was the same as you described it switch on and off location service

In my case it was actually that the location service for Google apps was switched off by default after the update. I didn't need to cycle it or anything, just simply switch it on.

Not sure how to fix that. Are you sure you have an internet connection on your phone? You might need to use the "Clear Data" option, rather than just "Clear Cache".
Hey, man, thanks a lot, I've been banging my head for 6 hours until I found your post. I was minutes away from resetting my phone to factory defaults. You saved me a lot of trouble. Kudos to you!
Thanks for the heads up on this!
Thanks
I too had emptied the google apps framework for the update to 4.2.1 on the galaxy nexus, this helped me out. Thanks!
Awesome
It worked for me in a Galaxy S3 i9300. Thank you so much!
Hello,
I am new to this forum. I tried my best to look for my problem and could not find it.
I rooting my samsung galaxy s III to the mr robinson jellybean 4.1.1
Everything works fine and dandy. But the problem is that my navigation does not work at all. It always says, looking for GPS. But the gps does work because direction maps work fine. I was wondering if anyone knew what to do with this. Thanks!

Mine works fine on my end, but on the other hand I did a clean install. Then restored all apps from Titanium. I would reflash.
What should I do?

Okay sounds good. Should I just reflash the same way? I can do that. Or is there a better root that you recommend? I would like to get a hot spot to work if that is possible as well. I wonder if that is possible. But it is hard to find out what exactly each different root does.
I had the same problem at one point. Try this.
In settings my Google account > location settings, allow Google apps to find my location. Make sure its checked
Hmm Maps still not working

So I tried doing that and it worked but on the road randomly it died out again and said the same thing. Do you think it lost the GPS signal or it just isnt working. Does anyone else have this problem?

Open Play Store. Hit your menu button and select "my apps". This will give you a list of all the apps installed on your phone. It will tell you what apps there are updates for and what apps are already updated.
Works, but noticed something up with my music player

Cool! The maps work fine! Great, thanks a lot. But I did noticed something. When I play music from the music player, every couple of songs it just stops playing, but says its playing. I reset the phone it works again but then the same thing happens. When I close the program it works fine as well but the in a bit the same issue comes. Does anyone know anything about this. Thanks.

I got rid of it by long-pressing on it, going to App Info, and force-stopping the service. I don't know what it was, but I didn't like it.
EDIT: It was actually Downloads, not Facebook, that I ultimately force-stopped.

I just got it. 30 min ago. Tried uninstalling FB no dice. Can not clear notification icon.
I held the notification until it said App info, then it took me to the download manager where I did a 'force stop' and then it went away.....then came back : /
but then I cleared the download manager data and it seemed to work.

Ya even I had such an issue on my s3.... what I did to stop is:
1.Get into settings
2. Application manager
3. Openn Download manager
4. Clear data and then force stop.

Yeah, same here. Pretty fishy since I don't have auto updates turned on. Just noticed it running in my notifications. I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S2 (Epic 4 G Touch) on Sprint. This thread was the only mention of "Facebook (build 140579)" that Google turned up.

Forced stop dl manager and clear data worked here. Odd.
Looks like it has something to do with Google Music app. When I force quit it, it stopped my music. When I kicked my music back on, it started trying to download it again.
It's the Download Manager

The app you're Force Stopping is Download Manager. Among other things, it handles the streams for music, video, etc. That's why it's affecting (and being affected by) apps like Play Music.
Same on my DNA. I did the force stop on the download manager as well. Facebook must just be screwing with our privacy again!
same thing just happened on my s3, i let it do whatever it was for a few but then decided to clear the data and force stop. Odd little thing no one seems to know what its doing.
Same issue on Motorola Admiral (rooted).
Clearing the data on the Download Manager got rid of it (didn't force stop).
Sorry for the lateness. But yea I did the same thing and it stopped for me. It's weird too cuz when I checked the download app, there was no source

Google Maps 7 update removed the best feature of them all, the "my maps". they said they will eventually bring it back. If your running google maps 7 and cant downgrade with apk you can always flash the 6.14.4 old maps that have the my maps layer.
the zip attach is the same zip found in the link but with all apps removed except for maps and street

Im glad someone found this useful. I take a lot of pics of houses everyday so before I leave my house I need at least 5-6 address to take pics. Google now was not an option since its a battery drainer. going back to old maps has really helped me out enormously. I can even imagine why this great feature was removed.
Cant wait till "my places" get back on the updated maps. Lets go GOOGLE get with it!

Nice! Do you flash it from recovery (like a ROM) or install it like a program?
Thanks.
Thanks. I don't why Google with each update take off functions from map.
One of the most stupid thing is that I am forced to turn on my WiFi to use map while i am outside with no wifi and my 4g data is working well. why on earth it can't just use the damn GPS

LOL - It DOES use you GPS chip. The problem is the map is downloaded dynamically depending on where you go so you have to have wifi or data active for it to download the maps.
Check youtube on how to cache the map data for destination and you will NOT need wifi or data if you don't deviate from that route.
Now, if you're one of those who enjoy looking at the pointer follow you around while you drive then yes, you always need wifi or data on. But it's always using the GPS to place you on the map.

You didn't understood what I meant. I know that it need internet to download Map, but the thing i was referring to is that you cant use the damn map even if you are outside with 3G/4G data activated. It absolutely force you to activate wifi even if you don't connect to wifi. The most stupid thing i ever seen. This thing waste my battery for nothing as my wifi keep searching for wifi points.
Workaround
You can use My Maps then navigate with Google Map with this kludgy workaround:
1) Open http://maps.google.com from stock browser, making sure you're logged-in to Google in on the browser
2) Click on the drop down arrow on the top right, then select "My Places"
3) Select one of your maps
4) Select a place
5) Tap on the place pin
6) Tap on the place information (either floating or on the bottom), then select Google Map for navigation.

Sorry to harp on this but you might learn something. I just tested with my phone (Droid X2). I turned-off wifi from settings, 3G came on. Then i opened Google maps, it said that to better locate me i should turn-on wifi - i hit "SKIP" and after a few seconds it showed my exact location (using the GPS chip in the phone). Then i switched to navigation and entered a destination, it gave me directions (on the map) no problem. this is all happening with wifi OFF. Oh, this is with maps 6.14.4
So either I'm lucky or you are doing something wrong. Maybe clearing data will give you the option to "skip" turning-on wifi.
I'm getting a error, unfortunately Google maps has stopped, it acts like a force close.

no error here. what rom are you using?
Will it increase binary counter of my i9500 or not?
Thanks.
Lol....I believe every time you flash something it does.
There's this Lil thing called triangle away that takes care of that though.
Edit: I just checked and my counter is at 1.....and in the past 2 days I've flash about 2 dozen things so I'm guessing no it dont
I was kind of scared of flashing is. zip using safestrap so I use Titanium Backup to first backup then uninstall Google Maps and then I installed the older version with an apk I download it and it works great
