Im glad someone found this useful. I take a lot of pics of houses everyday so before I leave my house I need at least 5-6 address to take pics. Google now was not an option since its a battery drainer. going back to old maps has really helped me out enormously. I can even imagine why this great feature was removed.
Cant wait till "my places" get back on the updated maps. Lets go GOOGLE get with it!

Nice! Do you flash it from recovery (like a ROM) or install it like a program?
Thanks.
Thanks. I don't why Google with each update take off functions from map.
One of the most stupid thing is that I am forced to turn on my WiFi to use map while i am outside with no wifi and my 4g data is working well. why on earth it can't just use the damn GPS

LOL - It DOES use you GPS chip. The problem is the map is downloaded dynamically depending on where you go so you have to have wifi or data active for it to download the maps.
Check youtube on how to cache the map data for destination and you will NOT need wifi or data if you don't deviate from that route.
Now, if you're one of those who enjoy looking at the pointer follow you around while you drive then yes, you always need wifi or data on. But it's always using the GPS to place you on the map.

You didn't understood what I meant. I know that it need internet to download Map, but the thing i was referring to is that you cant use the damn map even if you are outside with 3G/4G data activated. It absolutely force you to activate wifi even if you don't connect to wifi. The most stupid thing i ever seen. This thing waste my battery for nothing as my wifi keep searching for wifi points.
Workaround
You can use My Maps then navigate with Google Map with this kludgy workaround:
1) Open http://maps.google.com from stock browser, making sure you're logged-in to Google in on the browser
2) Click on the drop down arrow on the top right, then select "My Places"
3) Select one of your maps
4) Select a place
5) Tap on the place pin
6) Tap on the place information (either floating or on the bottom), then select Google Map for navigation.

Sorry to harp on this but you might learn something. I just tested with my phone (Droid X2). I turned-off wifi from settings, 3G came on. Then i opened Google maps, it said that to better locate me i should turn-on wifi - i hit "SKIP" and after a few seconds it showed my exact location (using the GPS chip in the phone). Then i switched to navigation and entered a destination, it gave me directions (on the map) no problem. this is all happening with wifi OFF. Oh, this is with maps 6.14.4
So either I'm lucky or you are doing something wrong. Maybe clearing data will give you the option to "skip" turning-on wifi.
I'm getting a error, unfortunately Google maps has stopped, it acts like a force close.

no error here. what rom are you using?
Will it increase binary counter of my i9500 or not?
Thanks.
Lol....I believe every time you flash something it does.
There's this Lil thing called triangle away that takes care of that though.
Edit: I just checked and my counter is at 1.....and in the past 2 days I've flash about 2 dozen things so I'm guessing no it dont
I was kind of scared of flashing is. zip using safestrap so I use Titanium Backup to first backup then uninstall Google Maps and then I installed the older version with an apk I download it and it works great

IM RUNNING CALKS latest and greatest btw... Most all fixes get a fast lock, or at least a lock after a reboot. The REAL test is:will it still get a lock after, lets say, 8hrs? This is the only "fix" that has truly passed that test... Try it, and you will agree I like to open gps status and get a lock on satelites before i use my gps too, if that makes any difference.
This zip, plus GPS status works the best. Wipe dalvik and cache then flash away....
Best way to check is use GPS to get first lock and directions.... if that's good, then try to do the same thing a few hours later BEFORE A REBOOT.... works like a charm.... I finally think this one works guys... check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13140032&postcount=17953
What problem is this fixing?
I have been using GPS Status for a long time. I would do the same on my Epic...open GPS Status, let it lock then Maps and Telenav had much better and quicker lock. I wasn't aware of those area fixes though. Telenav has been flawless on this phone for me around L.A. but I will definitely see what they're about. Thanks

A good number of unlucky people like me were experiencing SHAKY GPS.
This is fixing my gps not working at all... Sometimes it would work off of several reboots.Same for my gf's et4g. i was tempted to exchange it for another et4g. I've had my phone since day 1, and gps has never worked consistenly.. Now it works flawlessly! Thanks again Angeldeath!!
##GPSCLRX# + MSL will reset your gps, a lot less of a pain too if your having problems getting a fix.
i think the gps is very weak. i can never get a lock in my basement while my evos never had a problem. when im outside, my e4gt will get a lock eventually.
tried all kinda of fixes none work. though i think i must have borked it somehow. maybe a complete reformat will fix it but dont wanna do that any time soon

Depending on where you live should determine which zip you should download. And if you travel all over the u.s., just use the north american zip.(i recommend using the zip for the actual area that you live in)... Next, flash from recovery, then install GPS Status & Toolbox from the market.Turn on gps, open up gps status & toolbox, and select menu/settings/Display & Tools.. Then check "Show time to Gps fix"...keep gps status & toolbox open till sats are fixed..DONE. NOW I get immediate locks!!!
Anytime you reboot or power off, you have to open GPS Status to fix sats... THANKYOU ANGELDEATH and Xenova FOR THIS WONDERFUL GPS FIX THAT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR OUR PHONES!!!

Lol there's a Florida specific zip? I didn't know we were that ****ed.
this fix doesn't work
my phone was good until last week, now navigation never works, GPS takes 30-90 seconds to get a location within a few meters of me.
i've been trying everything, as many have been, and this fix only works for the first minute after using gps status. if i wait an hour and check maps again, i have to reset and re-download to get sats again and it still doesn't always work.
at this point i'm mildly convinced it's a hardware issue. unless a new driver is found, i'm going to try to get an exchange soon.
Edit:
Going back to square one (so far) has been a good fix - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
Edit 2:
Nope, going back to pure stock works as temporary as flashing regional GPS sats or clearing GPS cache

Some of those weather apps use the network location, not gps, and some display the nearest weather reporting station instead of your exact location. It all depends where the apps get its information from.
Beautiful widgets reported Dudley as location, the town next to me, probably using that tower. Weather Bug reports popular bluff airport, 25 miles away.

You try to pre map it in google maps first? I find that works.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
You need to use a map app that doesn't require data, and has pre downloaded maps already on phone.
Try Sygic from Google play, it is something along those lines
You have to anticipate being in an area with no service and pre cache it like another user said. Go to maps, settings, labs and check pre cache map area and cache your anticipated route
I put my phone on air plane mode and turn on gps(to try gps;here is full network) and i search some place and it keep saying searching.

I'm not sure what you're saying. If you're going to be using your phone as a gps in an area with no signal, you have to pre cache the area in an area with signal or wifi first. Then you can just rely on the GPS in that pre cached area.
Your GPS should be able to find satellites regardless of your lack of service. A good app to check on how your GPS is doing (# of satellites, accuracy, etc) is GPS Test. As for the maps, that question seems to have already been answered.

You can't. If you want navigation you have to have data unless you pre cached it beforehand in an area with data.
Yes u can, but only using the method I posts above. ^^^
That's the same thing as I was saying. If you want navigation, you have to have data at some point. Whether it's to download an app or pre cache maps, you cannot start in an area with no data and no preparation and use navigation.

Not really, once u download the app and maps using wifi on initial setup of your phone, u don't need data to use sygic. It uses your phones GPS in combination with downloaded maps, no active data connection required. Its core function is entirely different from Google navigation app, which requires a live connection

Where are the options to set them on your phone? I don't see any?
To set Home/Work on Android (It's kind of hidden):
Start Maps
Tap on your icon (The blue dot on the map, this should have your contact photo on it not just the blue arrow. You can pull it up by turning on the Latitude option.)
Tap on your name that appears above it
Tap location History
Tap the menu dots down the bottom right
The you get the Change home/work location options
There are also some graphs of how long you spend where.
Thanks!
ON a side note.. anyone get the traffic thing for appointments and meetings?
What about someone like me who actually works from home?
Google set my Home and Work addresses to the same thing. So, now when I'm out with friend it sometimes tells me how long it takes to get back to work haha.
Does anyone else work from home and have this issue?
It actually does learn it automatically based on you traffic patterns. It took about 5 days for mine to pick up then it just started showing up. It did ask me to confirm that home and work listings were correct though.

Well, you can always turn it off. Also, I just noticed that you can press the 3 dots on the Traffic card in Google Now and select Edit to change the destination its showing Traffic time for.
Do you have to have Latitude enabled for this to work?
Quite like the idea, but don't really want Latitude on!
I think that its eventually just supposed to learn about where you are based on your location, and then it will guess your home. If it guesses wrong, from there, you can change it to make sure its the right address

Can you try GPS Test ? That will rule out the GPS signal works fine. If that fails then you need to fix gps lock. Follow this thread here.
Once that all is sorted out, Try Mapquest's app till you sort out Google Maps. Get Faster Fix. let it set to the geographical continent of your location. That's a one time task. You can forget about it afterwards.
I still have the same problem and did a lot of experimentation. You need to enable location access in 3 different places if its not already on.
1. Go to "Google Settings" app. Make sure location access is turned on for apps.
2. Under phone's Location settings, allow location access. That will turn on GPS and Wireless position. Of these turn off Wireless part by unchecking that one alone.
3. I am not sure of this one, but you also need to check Google maps settings to see if its allowed that all pervasive location access. Don't let it save history though.
Try that and re-post your progress.

It's been a while but I don't think it will show that text. I think it's because this a function provided either through the modem, or one of the factory test type apps. I'm pretty sure the reboot nvbackup command is a function of a different partition altogether, but uses recovery to execute.
I could be waaaaay wrong on this one as it's just a guess based on my experiences with both. But even if I am wrong, I still am quite sure there's no blue recovery type text when you do this.

I'm using a Tab S 8.4 LTE, having an issue using Google Maps. When Location is in power saving mode, trying to find my location in Google Maps just gives me a dialog box asking me to turn on GPS to improve location accuracy, and after I decline the blue location button simply refuses to work. Google Maps is the only app that has this problem, every single other app that needs to find location has no problem using Power Saving Mode location service to find my location, whether it's a weather app like Accuweather or a map app like Citymapper, or even the browser version of Google Maps. When I choose to turn on GPS it actually does find my location immediately, while the device is still searching for a GPS signal. I already tried clearing cache and data and reinstalling Maps. My Tab S is my only device that is having this problem. Does anyone else get this?

The thing is pal by declining the only thing it has to work off then is your WiFi and mobile data which takes longer.
For anybody who disagrees with the wifi not being usable as a location aid well it surprised me to find that when google sent those vans around taking those lovely detailed photos of your street thats not all they were after. They also logged every wireless network they went past with their location at the time so that if needed you only had to have wifi switched on and an internet connection to give a pretty accurate reading of your location...
And theyve gone even further...they dont need to send vans out to keep this list updated.., they actually use your phones ...so you become a network information gathering tool which sends back to google any wifi networks you find combined with the strengh and location you were in
Sneaky blighters
So in answer to your question either turn on gps or turn on your wifi and mobile data...or just wifi if its connected to the net.

It doesn't just take longer, it just doesn't work at all in any way, even with both WiFi and mobile data turned on. Instantly works when I activate GPS, even if I'm indoors and the device still hasn't find a GPS signal to refine the location.

Like I said everything that isn't google maps app, including the browser Google Maps, has no problems. In desperation I tried a factory reset too but that didn't work. I just wondered if its only me who is having this issue.

Okay ive just understood what you meant, so i changed the location to power saving mode and went back to google maps, i indeed got the esame message about turning on gps, i selected no thanks and do not ask me again...but it wasnt working, i then went back to l9cation settings and clicked
"Google location Reporting" and it had set "location reporting " for the device to off, i turned it to on and viola location working off mobile data and wifi.

Thanks for the help. Sadly turning location history on didn't solve it for me for whatever reason but its good to know it's not just my device being faulty somehow.
