Hello all, I have a Samsung epic 4g (with the sliding keyboard) and no matter what kind of charger I use (I've already bought about 4 and all of them don't work).
Also, the phone won't boot into download mode, recovery, or just into regular phone. And the screen just got replaced.
Any ideas?

Are you using a stock battery? It may be a samsung fascinate battery. There batterys don't charge in our epics. Are you on stock? I think most custom roms remove this limitation.

yes I'm on stock battery and on a stock deodexed rooted ROM. Everything was fine until a few days ago. It just happened.

Well that is interesting. Its not a loose usb port? Was it working and then it stopped when the screen was replaced? Could be a loose connection on the inside. I doubt it is bricked tho, these things are like indestructible. Haha

sounds to me like someone did a shoddy job putting it back together after the screen replacement. when you plug it in do you have a light showing up top? or absolutely nothing. Because the person who replaced it might have ****ed up the ribbon cables. (I have to admit they are pretty annoying)

Probably, considering that my hardware keys didn't work afterwards along with the random reboots that happened whenever I would unlock the phone (I would have to open the keyboard so the phone would unlock itself.

Yeah, usb port is broken. Get an external battery charger for now.

I had to pick up a replacement phone and didn't have time to unroot my damaged phone. So I gave it to them anyway. I had a stock rooted rom installed at the time. Should I be expecting something to happen, or will they probably not even notice?

The port was damaged and wouldnt charge

Probably not if your phone was F.U.B.R. lol if not they might notice somethin if they care which I don't think they will man .
They will probably never notice then. Chopped up for refurbs..
That would be cool.thnx

Nah nothing will happen. If nothing was said at the time you gave them the phone, they aren't going to say anything. They are supposed to check that stuff before they give you a new or replacement phone.

Plus the damaged port is a hardware issue. They can't really claim that you rooting the phone caused the usb port to break. When I took mine in, the guy never looked at it. When I came back to pick up the replacement, they told me to take the battery & SD card out. As soon as I handed them the phone, they tore it apart for parts, then put the back inside an envelope. They probably did the same to yours.

Technically I think they can refuse a replacement if it's rooted, even if it's obviously completely unrelated.
But in any event, to the OP, once you're out the door with your new phone, keep walking and don't turn back.
i just exchanged my phone for the same issue all i did was put the stock rom back on the phone
Hey guys did a clean install to update to the latest build of fi27 using agats 6.2. Now when i use my car charger it says voltage too high? So i switched to kubans latest and same thing. So is part of the new build. Its very strange ive never seen this before.

When this issue happened to me, I took my phone into the Sprint store and they tested and found that the battery was bad. I had tried the phone of a couple of different car chargers before that and I received that same message on all of them.

Thanks for the input. Not sure if its the battery. Use my normal charger at home. No problems there. When i use my charger then i get that. ****ing weird

Universal car chargers are very bad for batteries. You always want to charge your phone more on the original charger. Only use a car charger when it is absolutely necessary to charge your phone.

Sprint will tell you it is a bad battery in order to keep from exchanging your device, this is the beginning part of the usb port starting to fail...I had this, I checked everywhere and then eventually the port gave in and went bad. Sprint exchanged my device.

Thanks guys. Yeah very weird. Never had a problem before but now even when i switch back to gb same result. So this could be a sign of usb port failure? Good thing my upgrades in march. fingers crossed i also land my job at sprint but **** man just to get hired what a process its been two weeks. Hopefully when i work there maybe i can put in my two cents that would actually be benefical to the devs.

Had this same issue yesterday after flashing FI27. Started with "voltage too high" eventually wouldnt charge at all. Luckily i have a repair center a mile ftom home.
Dropped off the phone and the rep seemed to be quite familiar with the problem. She said its been fairly common recently. They ordered me a new phone for Thur. Im pretty happy cause this assurion refurb has been locking up and running super hot since I got it.

Did you have to pay the $100 or whatever the cost of the deductible is?
Ever since I flashed agats 0.6.2 kernel my battery icon blinks. An even after unplugging the phone it still says its charging. Even if I take the battery out for hours today and put it back in it says charging on the lock screen and if I try to turn on adb it says please unplug usb cord. And the other weird thing is soon as I put the battery in it boots up with out holding the power button.

If it's the same problem, I think it has to do with the charging circuits. My battery charged fine on an external charger. In fact at the Sprint store the were going to give me the old battery in my new refurb. Told them I didn't want it if there was a possibility the voltage protection was going bad, might have shortened its life.

Since December I've been running CM10 on my GS-III with little to no issues. I flash CM 10.1 mid January and even though it was an unstable nightly it was very stable.
Flashing the nightlies as they became available with no issues at all.
Then today my phone starts slowing down and froze up.
Keep in mind that I hadn't flashed a nightly in like a day or 2 do I had been using the past nightly as a daily driver.
When my phone decided to freeze I rebooted it and it booted just fine.
About 2 minutes in the screen goes black. Holding the power button it's unresponsive.
Now my phone is completely unresponsive to all button presses. I've tried the 3 button combos for recovery and download mode with no luck. I've even held the buttons for a full minute but nothing is working.
Is my phone dead or is there a possibility of resurrecting it?

Are you positive the battery hasn't died. That would be the first thing I would check. Even if it showed it was charging doesn't mean the battery is good. I'm not trying to be insulting either by asking this. I'm a equipment tech at a large semiconductor company and you wouldn't believe the number of times the fix was as simple as turning a breaker back on when another tech wanted to replace something major. #1 rule of troubleshooting: Is there power. #2 rule: Double check rule #1. Sounds silly, but it is the easiest thing to overlook. Good luck and I hope it's as simple as a battery.

No you're not insulting by asking that. I use to record music and when something wasn't wasn't working that's the first thing we asked and re asked.
Unfortunately I do believe I checked that out. When I plug in a charger it doesn't even show me a battery charging logo.
I have noticed that when I pull out the battery and connect the charger the led turns red.
I'll see if i can't swap batteries with one of my friends and see if that helps.

I have tried the 3 button combos for T-Mobiles variant of the GS-III with no luck either.... I even tried making a jig and didn't have much luck....
Next step is to buy a jig and see if that works
Thankfully I got a replacement GS-III from insurance. So I'm content... Also since I get to keep the other GS-III as well it feels even nicer.

Now my next step is to attempt to hope that the jig will do something for my phone.

Flash STOCK or different ROM (Don't forget kernel too) think the issue is with the Cyanogenmod, mine did something similar, when screen went dark it took literally 5-10 Power button presses to wake the phone up, sometimes it wouldn't respond, other soft keys only would light up, Make backup, Wipe, install, check everything, that what I would do

The phone is dead. My friend's gs3 died suddenly one day while I just happen to be using it. I plugged in an otg plug and few minutes later the screen just went black. I was sure it was dead when I plug in a charger and there was no sign of life from the phone.
I don't know if you have to pay a deductible but Samsung is supposedly replacing galaxy s3 for free because there is a known defect which cause the motherboard to go bad. My friend's was a Verizon model and they just replaced it free.

So a few days ago my 2 month old s3 stopped charging, but only with Samsung chargers. I have tried 3 different ones so far. It seems to charge just fine with any other charger, htc, Motorola, ect. I used an air gun and cleaned out the charging port, but to no avail. I am stock except rooted. Haven't really installed anything recently. My question, do I bother sending it in for repair, or should I live with it? I don't want to have to unroot and backup everything to send it in if its only going to do it again in a few months. Anyone else have this problem?

Might be the USB port.... in which case you should ask for a replacement phone.
Don't bother with all the drama. It's an easy fix. Go on ebay, find an s3 charging port and replace it yourself. You just remove the battery, unscrew the back panel, and then port just snaps on and off. Take it off and snap the new one in place.
And I'd make a nandroid and then flash a custom rom.. See if it's software related.. If not, that means it's hardware.. But if you really want, talk to sprint, they have to give you a new one if manufacturer defect like that.

Sounds pretty easy to fix. Not sure if I want to void the warranty yet though.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
You wouldn't be voiding the warranty I don't think. Not to mention there's no way for them to know. Where the port is located, doesn't have any warranty seals or anything. I don't think any of the phone does besides maybe along the antenna. Check out some YouTube videos and you'll see how simple it is. No saudering drama. Just simple clip on and off kinda like a button

I have a similar problem: I have the same model phone, and I found that I can only charge using a data cord, not a generic charging cord. I can't imagine the reason, but I have found that unless a charger utilizes a true data cord, charging won't happen.
I have problems with my bluetooth headphones. It will connect and I can hear music for about 1 minute then it stops, my phone becomes unresponsive then it will usually reboot but get stuck. I usually have to pull the battery to restart.
I'm curious if there is something that I have flashed in the past to cause this.
The headphones work fine on my wifes 4g touch and my galaxy tablet as well.
I've even unrooted and went back to stock but still no luck.

I removed my motherboard last night just to see if I could see anything work visually. I already sent my phone to Samsung but they said it was OOW for having a cracked screen. You can get used E4GTs all day long for under $100 in good condition on Craigslist where I am. I usually see them running $50-$75, but I paid $30 for the last one I bought.
I would suggest buying a new one, and selling the defective one on eBay for parts. If the shell is in fair condition someone will buy it.
The other option, if you are not under contract, is to consider an upgrade to the s4. I have seen some $0-$50 prices so far this holiday season.
