Hi guys
Sorry if a bit off topic, but I was looking for sometime for a 7 to 8 inch device that can double as a phone and a tablet, and the best I found till now was the galaxy tab 7.7
The only problem is that the tab 7.7 has an outdated hardware. Has anyone come across a new device that is inline with what I just mentioned or knows of a new device that will be released soon
P.s. I have the seen the tab 2 7.0 and it has an even more outdated hardware than the tab 7.7
Thanks
Nexus7 would be my choice

Nexus 7 , yes can't work as a phone though...would wait for a month for Samsung and HTC to launch their tablet.version .

Galaxy note is "best of both" I believe its a 5" screen its a phone/tablet hybrid so to speak.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Why do you want a 7" phone? Your best bet is to wait for the new Galaxy Note 2 rumoured to have a 5.5" screen or get the original Note.
Or get a 7" tablet like the Nexus and use a smart phone to tether to it?
The G-Tab 7.7 with the AMOLED display can be used as a phone. So can the G-Tab 2 7”. The 3G international versions of course. Samsung is absolutely pitiful at updating their tablets though. Every tablet they've sold before the 2's were released are still stuck on HC.
Oh well. I just don't see samsung as something worth buying if you've already come across another brand

Hi,
About a year and a half ago I went from an iPhone 3 to a Galaxy Gio (my first android phone) and I've been happy ever since with Android. But the phone is on it's last legs, so time for a new phone.
Now with the arrival of the Nexus 4 I was really excited about it and was thinking about getting one.
But the issues with delivery, the fact it can't be found in the Netherlands and the fact that no retailer sells it for the 299e it's supposed to go (LG told a big Spanish retailer to sell it for 599 I read yesterday, MediaMarkt in Germany sells it for 395) made me look for an alternative.
I don't want to spend too much, so my budget is around 300 as I recently bought an iPad for the "heavy" things such as games.
I purely want a phone with a large screen that is able to play games you play for a few minutes. Stuff like Temple Run, racegames etc etc.
I'm now leaning towards the Google Nexus, my question is how future proof is this phone? Will it be able to run games that come out, say, the next year or so? Will updates after 4.2 also appear for the Galaxy Nexus?
I found a brand new one for 249e, is it still worth the money? Many thanks in advance.
Definitely worth it . Over a Year old and its still one of the best phones on the market . It has no problem with any current games and I don't see that changing for some time. Dual cores are still on top! a quad core is almost pointless ....for now. They still put the dual core chip sets in the galaxy Slll.

They put dual core S4 in the American S3 because of LTE not playing well with Exynos Quad. Same for the HTC One X/S.
I just bought my second one. It is a very very capable device. Personally I don't game on my phone aside from the occasional Bad Piggies or GTA Vice City when I'm bored at work, I use my Nexus 7 for all my gaming needs, but when it comes to every day computing it is still a top performer. Due in large part to the Project Butter enhancements that make it super speedy. Switching between applications or multi tasking is a breeze.

People still underestimate the dual core processors, the Snapdragon S4 dual core is still a beast processor.

A lot of us feel the LG Nexus is a step down in terms of build quality and the cost isn't really worth the benefits. Yeah it has more ram and processors but the camera is just as sad compared to the what it could/should have been. Its just not worth that extra cost. For instance I bought a mint GSM Nexus about 2 weeks ago, it is 6 months old and I got 4 OEM batteries + charger, and 7 cases including a SGP Neo Hybrid and a mess of screen protectors for 299. I would have paid no less then 399 w/tax & ship for a Nexus4 with nothing else.
It would be better for most of us to keep on chugging with the Gnex until the next Nexus device comes out that should be a good sized leap from the N4. Phones have that 2 cycle evolutionary leap. Like how the first HTC phones were great and the 2nd series (sensation....) Sucked pretty bad. But the OneX is great and the OneX+ isn't a huge improvement. Same thing with the Nexus phones. The Nexus One was spectacular. 1GHZ processor when 550 was unheard of. 512 ram, when 256 was normal and a S-AMOLED screen. The Nexus S was moderate. A curved screen, NFC and 1gb ram ( I could be wrong about the ram) were the only major improvements. But then the Galaxy Nexus introduced a dual core processor, huge 720P HD screen, on screen keys and a lot more.
I think the next Nexus will be huge

This phone rocks and I love it but recently 4.2.1 has been giving me issues and I feel like a beta tester for Google. Don't say flash factory images, I did and I factory reset a few times. Hoping on 4.2.2 to fix the issues otherwise this phone is still extremely capable and does everything I need it do and can easily last me another year.

Because nobody sells it for 299 in Europe. The 299 version goes for 395. Black market at the moment is 500e.
Plus there is a 7 week waiting time for the people that already ordered. It will take well over 2 to 3 months before it will be widely available. Who knows how long it will take before it's available for 299.
Maybe in a year or so I'll upgrade to the 4 .

I got an proposal for it, an white Gnex + $150 but I don´t know it it worths, because the processor, camera and screen seems to be be better on the 4x.. but the a nexus is a nexus.. . So, what is your opinion? (Here in Brazil, a Galaxy Nexus costs like $790 and a 4X HD $900)

I agree that the LG 4X HD is a beast in specs compared to the Galaxy Nexus. It has a Tegra 3 processor which is clocked at 1.5GHz which is a quad core (however it might not matter at all since the Galaxy Nexus is awesome with Jelly Bean), a much larger battery and even a microSD card slot if you put a lot of media onto your device.
Is the LG 4X HD you won in new condition? Also is the white Galaxy Nexus in good condition?
Also have you previously owned a Nexus device before?
I would personally go with the Galaxy Nexus (if its in good condition) and cash because I am a flash addict and if you are too.. then you know what to do.
I have gnex and its awesome I am due an upgrade but would rather keep the gnex
There is so many ROMs/kernels for the gnex and very soon Ubuntu phone will be available. I don't know anything about the lg 4x but with a locked boot loader and no custom ROMs etc I personally would take the gnex.
This is only my opinion so I would wait for others to comment who may know more about the 4x.
Hope this little input can help you make up your mind

My 4X HD is new and the Gnex too, i've never owned a Nexus device before but I have custom roms at all my androids, CM10 my Defy, CM10.1 on Transformer Prime, CM10 on XOOM (almost a Nexus) and CM9 on my Galaxy Ace.
I'd stick with the Nexus too. Even versus better hardware, you can't beat the development. Software > Hardware IMO...
I'd probably buy another GNex if anything happened to this one.

100% get the Galaxy Nexus and cash or if you can, sell the 4X HD for a lot more since you do seem to have a lot of "up to date" devices due to the custom roms
Since the device is new, you'll love it and you won't notice the performance difference if you used the 4X HD compared to the Galaxy Nexus.
And of course, you are in the Nexus forums so it'll be biased

Perhaps a controversial suggestion in these forums; but how about a Nokia Lumia 620? It does a much better job of being a phone than my Note 2. I use my Note 2 basically as my laptop...I wouldn't consider using it as my phone though given its size, price & complexity.
I also find that some of the core apps on the Lumia have no equal in the Android sphere (Nokia Drive works completely offline; Nokia Music is completely free - and you can store about 12 hours worth of offline music).
If only Android were a little more user friendly...

I vote for the Nexus 4. You're getting a great processor, and a guaranteed updates for a while. dollar for dollar / euro for euro, it can't be beat. If I were on a budget, I'd consider that... for 3 seconds... and buy it. But make sure you get a case! Some people who have dropped it have complained of shattering it. But I don't doubt that wouldn't happen with the Note 2 or any other device.

It doesn't make sense to buy any of those devices at that price. Especially not anything from HTC with the ONE coming out so soon.
Many online shopping portals are selling the 16gb nexus 4 for around 24 to 25k. That would be a better option than gnex plus i really feel the next major android update(KLP) will not be as lag free as jelly bean on gnex.

I bounce back and forth between my HTC One S (s4) and Galaxy Nexus.
If you have to choose from both, I'd say the Nexus, unless you love sense. The development community is larger for the Nexus. I like that it has a removable battery and a bigger screen. I'm switching back to my GN after his post.
I don't think there is much development for the S3 version of the One S. I will say sometimes the smaller size of the One S is nice and personally, I think the camera is better.

Yeah, I bought my wife an N4 as a surprise and now I have her old Gnex. As I said in my last post, I still the the Gnex has some legs, especially given the large development community. Also, I actually didn't mind running the Gnex on stock for a bit. Of the last four phones I've had, this one made it the longest before getting a custom ROM. I finally rooted last night and am running the lastest CM 10.1 nightly.
I will say this, with all the different ROMs available for the GNex, it'd be like having a new phone all the time (if you're a flashaholic). As much as I like my HTC One S and respect the developers, there aren't nearly as many ROMs available. Viper 2.1 (Sense) is great, and I also like Liquid Smooth (AOSP) for the One S,
Both phones have run smooth for me, on different Roms. I'm still trying to get good photos with my Gnex (any suggestions?), so the one big advantage of the One S is the camera.
Again, good luck and let us know what you go with. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions on comparing the two.
Nick

I've been thinking about the 8 inch version of this tablet for about a month. Bought one in Australia for my Mum and she loves the pants off it (her first tablet).
There's a special on at the moment in NL which brings it down to 200 euros which is a fairly decent price, but I also have the option of picking up a 2012 Nexus 7 new for 170. I've read some really terrible things about the 2013 nexus 7 and a fair few complaints about build quality on the 2012 version. I'm a student and if I buy something, it needs to genuinely last for a good two years (preferably more) to be worth the cost. Have you guys been happy with the quality of your devices?
I have noticed that there isn't much development for this device. Is this just because root has only recently been found? Or is there not much interest because of the Nexus family? I've always focused on development in buying devices and it's helped me squeeze four years out of my HTC Desire bravo and three years out of a friend's Galaxy S i9000.
So essentially what I'm asking is, does it seem like development might pick up in the future, and if not, is the quality of the device high enough that it would be worth trading off development potential? Sorry to ask such a general question, but I'm tearing my hair out trying to make a decision while the nexus 7 2012 is still in stock.
Thanks in advance!
I'm looking for a 8inch tablet too trying to decide between the LG g pad or the tab 8.0 the LG has much better hd screen and a quad core processor

same here. I got the Tab 3 8.0 and I love it. But now I want the LG 8.3. I already have a plan to give my tab to my daughter since she plays with ti and get the LG. But I'll wait for a sale on it.
ROMs Available
Are there ANY roms other than AOSP? I can't even find a Cyanogenmod or AOKP for this device :/
I see that some customers are complain about screen brightness on the LG is dull. Compare to Samsung

I had the Nexus 7 2012 and currently have the GTab 3 8.0. I had no problems whatsoever with the Nexus. It was a good tablet. I just found the screen dark and cramped. I love the GTab 3 8.0. So it's not "retina". Big deal. The screen is crisp and bright and looks great to me. The tablet runs smooth and fast.
Honestly between those two models it's between screen size and whether having an SD slot is important to you. They are both great tablets.
Would you change your tab 3 8.0 for a LG pad?

You know why? Because we can't just bring up a new ROM for every device that comes out we need to build that if You cant wait do it by yourself otherwise just wait!!!
