So, how smooth is JB? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Any experience from GN users in actual use?

Smooth.
What's the point of this thread again?

Straight after the OTA, I didn't think it was very smooth - it was almost a bit stuttery at times - but after 15 minutes use, it really perked up and the speed difference is now very noticeable. (I don't know whether wiping the cache partition after the OTA might help that too.) I've been using it continuously since last night and it's definitely much more responsive, especially switching between tasks using the soft key, and jumping between the home screen and the app list and on-screen menus and such.

VERY smooth.
For those that say iphone and wp7 are so smooth blah blah blah jelly bean its super smooth and definately on par with other OS now.
All of the native apps run butter smooth.
Some 3rd party apps still have a bit of stutter with scrolling etc but thats the app not the OS.
Very impressed with what google have done with the triple buffering.

Just as an FYI, the first 15 min. stutter/slow down is most likely due to background sync that the phone is doing. It won't have much of an indication to the user, since it's "background" sync.

Flash Stock JB 4.1.1
Flash Franco's Linaro-optimized JB Kernel
buttery smooth.

I think it is much smoother than it was before on ICS. Project Butter really does its job very well!

Same here !!
At the first time I thought the 'smooth' was such a joke. But after minutes, like neil alexander said, it's very different and very smoothness !!!! :victory:
I don't wiped the cache, or anything like that.
JB is awesome !!!

Flash it without the kernel. Still buttery smooth.

I am going to be totally honest with you. I was extremely disappointed with JB. I tried it for the first time yesterday (Jelly Belly v3) and I must say it is rather choppy in some areas. Ex. When swiping between home screens (stock launcher) it for some reason decides to get stuck or it pauses on a home screen and as a result you have to swipe a second time just to make it to the next screen. This only happens when swiping at a fast pace though. On the other hand on ICS this does not occur not matter how fast you swipe between screens.
Aside from that problem everything else does seem noticeably "smoother" Ex. the stock browser, pinch 2 zoom, and overall scrolling is somewhat more fluid. But if I were asked if it was worth upgrading to JB...I would respond by saying no...not at this point. Which is why I decided to flash back to aokp b39 this morning. I would much rather wait for an aokp build. A lot of apps are incompatible or do not work as intended at this point...no surprise there since this a new release. Just to be fair though I would say Google did a great job overall. Just give it a little time and all things will be sorted out by aokp and cm10. JB is only going to get better in the next few months. As of now I will just keep waiting patiently for the next aokp build.

Leave it with the stock kernel. thats the smoothest youre gonna get. i was with franco before but its much better on stock for now.

Jelly Bean is super smooth on the Galaxy Nexus. For me the biggest improvements are in the app switcher and lockscreen which used to lag horribly sometimes and now work instantly without a hitch.
Some 3rd party apps still aren't smooth. For example Opera has always had and still has really choppy looking animations.

Amazing smooth for me, even the xda app(that used to lag horribly) flies

Every phone handles things differently, but I would suggest flashing a no-frills, pure AOSP build, like mROM, if you want to test drive JB. Some of these ROMs have extra tweaks and features that may hamper performance, and alter your experience...check out a pure, stock rooted build, and you may change your mind.
Galaxy Nexus - Slim Bean a4

I don't think JB is that much of an improvement, it is smoother but nothing groundbreaking.
Only two things I like is the new voice search and the new transitions.

I also was expecting a much more smooth experience. But I think it will get better with future updates.
The biggest complain I have is the responsiveness of the touch. I'm a fast writer and I notice that the screen response to touch isn't the same as it was in 4.0.4. I'm using SwiftKey 3.
I notice that some touch events aren't processed/detected and this makes me miss some key touches. Have you notice something like that?

As smooth as the glass on the display

Very smooth. Noticeably smoother than ICS. No problems with micro-lag or keyboard lag or anything on stock OTA, stock kernel. Absolutely love it.

This is how i felt after i got Jellybean:

CM7 vs. MIUI

Which is the best?
Most (including myself) will say it comes down to what you prefer. I prefer miui because of some of the built in features (launcher, t9 dialer, free themes, lockscreen opens directly to a new message, built in sms popup). Some hate miui cause of the iphone resemblance. I would just recommend you try them both. It's really impossible to say if one is better than the other because they are so different in appearance and features.
I prefer cm7. Miui is basically an iPhone clone, and if that was what I wanted, i would buy an iPhone.

Having spent time with both, and liking Miui, I've gone back to CM 7.
Miui is great for the customizing and has a lot of theme support out there, but the lack of the launcher with app drawer was a turn off (ended up using Adw) as well as the lockscreen was something I could never get to my liking.
I did like the popup Sms alot... The big reason why I switched, I go to the gym every morning and use my phone for an mp3 player...the last three days of using Miui, I kept getting freeze ups with the Miui music player. Could have been kernel related but I'm using the same kernel with CM 7 (tiamat) with no issues, but I'm also using Player Pro (which I could have used with Miui). I hadn't planned on staying with Cm 7, but after using it for the past week, I'm really happy with it now, and will continue to use at as my daily driver. I may flash Miui again to experiment though from time to time I do still keep a part of Miui in my phone though... I really like the Miui Camera app

I love miui animations and the settings is better looking. I use launcher pro and its awesome.
To fix the music, go into settings after it freezes and reboots and clear the data in the music app.
I love all the different lock screens and how simple it is. This is not an iPhone with launcher pro. It's android after being cleaned up.

What makes MIUI more customizable then CM7??
I have tried out both and feel like CM7 has more features. Can anyone fill me, or anyone else who is curious, about main features then separate these two roms?
I am currently running Skyraider, but feel myself drifting back to one of the two mentioned before.

Miui has a fully supported theme app that does way more than the cm7 one. I had a lock screen that could open 10 different apps...the notification bar is more efficient too

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this Knipp, as I am still trying to learn as I go. I more or less try to teach myself everything, and have done a pretty good job so far, in my eyes at least.
But, when you say "fully supported theme app", i am no so sure i understand what you mean. Does that mean, MIUI has themes with apps built into them?
I appreciate the time you take to reply to my question.

I love MIUI, mainly because it looks better aesthetically, but that's just my opinion. CM7 is great too.
The deal with MIUI themes is, you can download several different themes and use aspects from each for different things (e.g. use one theme's lockscreen with another theme's notification bar, and a third's icons, etc.)
I find MIUI to be much more useable and stable too.
MIUI sometimes gets a bad rap because it CAN look like an iclone, but only if you really want it to: you don't have to theme it that way if you want it to look different.
You can change the look of everything - from the taskbar, to the kind of lock, the lockscreen background, the launcher (although I use LPP), the size and shape of the icons, sms, fonts, and even the dialler - and more. It's pretty impressive, IMHO.

Thanks for the headsup on the Music fix.I figured it had to be something crazy going on.
I ended up reflashing back to Miui just after my original post earlier today.
Added a few changes that I had been using with CM 7 and now I'm back to the Miui fold once again.
I forgot how much I really do like the Miui experience. I plan to do the update to 1.9.9 later, I'm still on 1.8.26
To the OP... I would give both a try and see which you prefer...
MiUi 1.9.9 is constantly giving me fc whenever I do anything. Not sure why. It's android.process.alcore, whatever that is. Anyone able to help me? Please pm me if you can.

For me its about the aesthetic. MIUI is ridiculously neat and crisp. Yeah I don't care for the iPhone like launcher...but oh well. I do use adw or go launcher from time to time..but the MIUI has those stock folders that are so cool. And just cause the launcher looks like an iPhone isn't so bad. Its still android. We can still do nandroid backups and flash other stuff. We can overclock our phones and play with them all day. IPhones are for yuppies, but....they are onto something with the layout/launcher. In the end it is all up to the user. CM7 is for sure something to try. Having to also flash that gapps.zip kinda is lame but but all of us like hanging out in clockwork recovery. Lol

Yuo, the overall Miui experience is something to be enjoyed. After flashing back a few days ago, I flashed back to CM7 for a few minutes last night, and the first thing that caught my eye was the overall lack of crispness so to speak. Miui sure has the crispness to it. It is a great rom. I do still like CM 7 as well though. after a little theme work it can look really good as well.

How did you theme it like this?
anyone using miui with the latest JDKernal? is it better with JDkernal or Tiamat?
Thanks
Honestly its all based on what you want. If you want something more iPhone like go with Miui if not go CM7. Personally i like stock Sense 3.0 so i'm running Virtuous Unity.

I was running the latest version of Tiamat and ran across someone using JD Nightly and was professing "Incredible" battery life. So I started test-driving that kernal late yesterday. So far, I'm not seeing anything incredible, but I'm going to give it a couple days to "settle" before passing judgement.

[Q] Need advice in switching from CM7 to MIUI

I'm mostly a lurker and try not to post much since most any question I have has already been answered (I've spent hundreds of hours on here but only posted a couple of screenshots), but I am looking for a little advice. I have been running CM7 with Tiomat kernel on my Evo for about 2-3 weeks and am pretty happy for the most part, but now I'm getting itchy to try out MIUI for the first time.
1. How does this forum infect people with the insatiable urge to constantly mod? ;-)
2. Any tips on a smooth(ish) transition? This is a pretty subjective question but I figure I will learn more from your answers than in dozens more hours poking around.
You'll be hard pressed to go back to CM.
Get the newest MIUI from MIUI.US
Use Aman Ra, Wipe Everything except SD Card and Battery Stats, if you're not fully charged. Flash MIUI then DT A2SD, if you're partitioned, boot up.
Let it settle, Reboot to Recovery, Flash Kernel (Tiamat 4.1.0 and 3.3.7 Are recommended)
Boot up And have at it.
Hey bonillamktg,
Ive used Miui for a few months as a daily driver and to be honest i loved it, its a simple interface that is easy to use but filled with features. You can overclock it stock with set cpu , out of all the roms i have tried so far i would say it was the smoothest, that flowed the best, the only issue i had was some problems with video recording. but besides that it gave me the best battery life i have ever had over 24 hours on a single charge with the stock evo battery. personally i would recommend it, and I liked it better then CM7 "only my option of course". But I say give it a shot, just nandroid up before hand so you can flash back if you dont like it!
Enjoy, hope I somewhat helped lol
Thanks, HipKat! I just read through your entire Ultimate Guide to Everything Evo 4G and learned a ton. That is probably the single most valuable post I've seen on any forum.
I've already been using Tiamat 4.1.0 and it has been good to me, so I'm glad to hear that it works well with MIUI. I fell asleep soon after posting this but I'm up now so I'll let y'all know the results.
Stevo, your description is exactly what I keep seeing over and over that makes me want to give it a shot. I feel like my setup now is a bit clumsy, it gets the job done but I have to go to 20 different places to tweak everything. Thanks! I'll let you know what the end result looks like!

With or without SBC?
I only use SBC
Yeah and thats what I was reading all about before I gave it a shot to. I say go for it and give it a flash, it really is a nice smooth rom. One thing I forgot to add before when ever I use a sense rom I am normally getting around 150mb free ram, but on MIUI I was getting easily 250mb! & yeah I feel ya, its always a pain to tweak everything to perfection. Well hopefully Miui works out for ya! Your welcome, an thanks for keeping me updated on your journey haha. Good luck
HipKat, wondering if you would know why I'm having an issue. I was actually hoping that this type of feature might be built into MIUI, but I've been using Wallpaper Wizardrii for a little while now because it crops properly for non-scrolling wallpaper and doesn't pixelate...at least not until now. With CM7 & ADW.EX, it worked perfectly, but now, it is pixelating horribly. It's not the images, they are the same ones I used before that worked well.

In ADW ex, do you have the wallpaper hack option turned off? I think that option has something to do with wallpaper quality or color depth or something. You can also try Superwall lite or MultiPicture LWP. They're both live wallpapers, but I've seen no battery drain with either and I've used both. Superwall might be better since you're just using one image.
I get amazing wallpaper quality with MIUI, especially on the default launcher. Clear defaults for ADW or use a home switcher app to see what the wallpaper looks like on the default launcher with the same app. If it looks fine on the stock launcher, it could have something to do with your install of or settings in ADW.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I tried turning off the wallpaper hack and then went back to an image I used to get clearly and it was split in two, basically the left half of the image was moved over to the right.
You are right in how impressive the image quality is on MIUI's stock programming, even using ADW. If I really wanted to, I'd take an image editor, even something basic like MS Paint, and edit an image so it'd be centered where I want it. I change my wallpaper too often for that, though.
I found the Flikie Wallpapers app which has some great wallpapers, but I'll remember Superwall Lite for the future.
Thanks so much for the advice!
Here is where I am at now. I like the combination of Minimalistic Text, Missed It! and Quick Agenda that I put together at the top. I wish I could've integrated the SwitchPro widget into it, but it isn't scaling right for me (It leaves a big gap that I don't like). It's also not letting me edit the images for the switches, which I want to do before integrating it up there.

well i for one have tried the tiomat kernel on the MIUI rom and so far I noticed that my battery drained a little faster than usual. The one thing i did like about it was that i was able to use the hdmi mirroring. But I went back to cyn kernel with miui in the end (^_^)
miui is awesome. i love how many pink themesbthere are...yes im a girl...and how i can customize the theme the way i want it. i promise that you will be addicted. its a lot better than any other rom, and im a flash maniac. i do have a question maybe someone can help me, I'm on the latest miui 1.12.9 when I do group text messaging it force closes? What gives? Any ideas?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Well, unless you use the extended settings, wall paper on MIUI does scroll, so maybe the images you're using are being resized improperly. FYI, and you probably know this, but the wall paper size on scrolling desktops for the EVO are 960px x 800px @72 dpi. 480 x 800 for lock screens.
BTW, you should lose the background on your Minimalistic text. or at least turn the opacity way down.
Just saw your post now, and hopefully hipkat can help you more with this, but i think your issue is to do with the rom itself. That is one downside of Miui there is no 720 picture taking and I really want to say the rom it's self has less resolution to it, when using it i did have a lot of low quality things images, and after flashing back to a sense rom I noticed much better quality images within pictures my backrounds and even just certain apps.
Hope that helps a little, is it just wallpaper your having issues with or is it other images?
MIUI is a 180 degree spin from CM completely different but its real nice you will enjoy it very stable and complete. The 1.11.18 version worked great for me then i tried 1.11.25 and had too many issues. By the way can some1 hlp me get a copy of .18 or .12 just to have? I cant seem to find it anywere and i didit save a copy. Thanks.

One reason why I don't use MIUI is because it doesn't have 4G support. So if you use 4G routinely, you may miss it.
True that. No 4G. For me, I don't have it here, anyhow, and have access to WiFi all the time, home and work

Why do you like your ROM?

What rom do you have on your phone?
Why do you like it?
What dont you like about it?
Im curious to see what everyone is running
So far ive ran aokp, paranoid android, and cm10.
Im currently on cm10 and enjoy how professional it is. (explaining the swag button to potent galaxy buyers was kind of tough)
I would have kept paranoid android but the profiles didnt work and i didnt know how to use the dpi changer.
I also started this thread to see who uses android development ROMS instead of the original development ones
Im mainly interested in the non original android development roms users and their oppinions but everyone's answer is appreciated
My favorite was Codename Android, besides one major flaw that myself and very few others experienced: Impossible to send SMS longer than 160 characters, regardless of settings/reflashes/apn/etc. Just because it was the smoothest ROM for me.
I value UI smoothness above all else and have yet to find a ROM that is truly stutter free.
CM10 is ok, but if you go to clock and swipe to the side to go to timer it stutters like a pentium 2 running Crysis: Warhead.
Stock ICS ROM's lag, as well Facebook/third party app scrolling has constant stutter reminiscing of SGS1
JB Leaks (LIF, LIG, LIH) give me blackscreen reboots once in a while, although noticeably smoother than ICS.
I didn't mention battery life as quite frankly I can get a day of usage with every ROM I have tried so far which is nearly all of them.
I think I'm using stock ROM right now as I was fed up and just restored an old nandroid... I guess its ok, everything just works, lots of stutter's though. Doesn't have that premium feel you expect of a device at this price point.

I have tried multiple versions of it, still stutters on homescreen sometimes. Same Timer stutter as CM10 and annoying alarm bug (although there is a fix, it's inconvenient). As well the Nova launcher that AOKP uses, and pretty much all third party launchers have a little input lag due to non native integration or no hardware acceleration (not sure which, but the input lag is there).
Anyway I'll take my fluidity rant somewhere else, people seem happy with the current state of the phone.

The childishness of aokp turned me off since i looked at the boot logo but my gripes can all be easily fixed /hidden.
I havent noticed the speed difference but i do see tge lag you speak about but ive dismissed it as a hardware being underpowered to the rom issue and dont notice it as much anymore
So im still looking for answers from non original development users but to everyone else

Blazer Rom.
It's minimalistic, faster than stock without overclocking, great battery right out of the box, and EVERYTHING WORKS. take that jelly bean.

Because its my ROM. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
I'm currently using cm10 and I find very awesome. It's fast and has a lot of great features. I tried AOKP and decided that IMO cm10 was closer to actual 4.1, but AOKP had many more features.

I had been running AOKP for a week or so, I like its customization better than that of other ROMs.
I just yesterday found a new ROM called Paranoid KANGdroid. It pulls from CM10, AOKP, and Paranoid Android. Has pretty much all the features of all three. So much customization, I love it. Not fully stable, though, its only a few days old.

[ROM REVIEW] Jelly King 2.0 Review

Jelly King 2.0 Review
Introduction:
So I've been using Jelly King 2.0 for quite some time now, and I obviously like it. So, I decided to write a review for this, so that they can have a look at the main plus points and negative points for the ROM and decide whether they want it or not.
Alright, so let's start off the review.
Note: No tweak has been used except for the in-built adrenaline engine and INT2EXT (used for increasing internal memory). The phone has not been overclocked, it is on Stock 600MHz.
Jelly King 2.0:
Jelly King 2.0 (I will call it JK2 from now on) is the successor of Jelly King 1.0,1.1.,1.2 and 1.3.
Author: kantry123
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075272
Main Features:
Based on the Latest CM10 Alpha 2 by modpunk.
Minor bugs like - Low Brightness, Auto Brightness, CRT Animation have been fixed. (i.e. the ROM is pretty much complete)
Adrenaline Engine in-built to give you speed.
Main Bugs:
Camera quality worse than stock Sense ROMs.
Camcorder recording framerate is very low.
Panoramas generated are not correct.
Data disconnects randomly sometimes.
USB Tethering does not work (i. e. Using phone as modem doesn't work).
Google Now Voice Search doesn't work.
All in all, these bugs are very very minor, as the Camera on the whole works. So, it shouldn't be a HUGE problem, unless you take lots of photos with your phone. If so, switch to Sense or CM7.2.
Now, I'm going to stress on a few major points which people look at when choosing a ROM.
Stability:
As far as I'm concerned, I give this ROM a 8.5/10 for stability. Quite stable, no issues whatsoever, only that I rarely face a random reboot.
Performance:
Now first of all let me remind you that our phone has a 600MHz single-core processor , with Adreno 200 GPU. Not much compared to today's phones, huh? Yet, this ROM gives you solid performance. I've been playing games like Rope N' Fly 3, Temple Run 1, Temple Run 2, The Sandbox, Age Of Zombies, Jetpack Joyride the whole day. And it hardly lags. I give it a 9/10 for giving good performance on compatible games even with such a low CPU clock speed.
Battery Life:
When you first use this ROM, you would be like, "Damn, the battery sucks." I was that way too, you know. But on closer examination of battery stats, you'll see that majority portion of the battery is being sucked by the display. So, the solution is simple. You put the brightness between minimum to 25%. I have myself put it on minimum and experienced a drastic increase in standby battery life, as well as screen on battery life.
Note: I am on the .15M Radio, it gives slightly better battery than others.
Benchmarks:
Now, I don't really do benchmarks, but I gave the FPS one a shot. I will not be doing AnTuTu Benchmark, because it calculates the score based on CPU Clock Speed and SD Card Reading speed, so obviously, the scores will differ.
NenaMark2: 14.6FPS. Quite the shocker, no? On such low hardware power, 14.6FPS is amazing. Good job kantry!
And finally,
Tips And Tricks:
You MAY feel some lag while using this ROM. In order to remove it completely, I recommend using Seeder 2.0.0 (if you want to support the dev, a paid Google Play version is available).
I also recommend using the v6 Supercharger script by zeppelinrox.
Screenshots:
All screenshots can be found in my folder on Google Drive, here.
So, that's the end of this review. If you have any points you would like me to add, please do post a reply and tell me, I will add it soon!
I do hope this review has helped you all. Best of luck in choosing your ROM!

Very good review!
I'd add that data disconnections can happen, and I'd "just" give a good 8 or 9 for stability, but I think it's overall pretty accurate.
Are you sure the .15M radio gives better battery life? I had the opposite feeling (so in favor of 10.M), but I didn't really test it particularly...
Great rom anyway.

I forgot the data bug, thanks! And o just had 2 random reboots after this review. Down to 8.5.
And yes, it does improve battery life by quite a considerable amount and you can upgrade it with my tutorial, link is in my sig.

Andropalace has an ARMv6 version of Temple Run 1&2. Pretty smooth, both. Only that temple run 1 has an auto die bug, where you die in the middle at any point. So I recommend Temple Run 2. Newer and bug free.

Well, won't be for today. I tried everything (I've tried for hours now), but nothing seems to work. Even with your thread....
Don't know what I missed (tried with RUU, renaming rom.zip, with stock boot/system/recovery, re-made Goldcard...) but I've only lost data by mistake. :silly:
Well, maybe I'll understand later. Or not.
Hi, I got a question.
I flashed today my Wildfire S with JK 2.0. First thing I got to the Play store and install a few apps:
Droidwall
Beats Audio
ROM manager
Whatsapp
While I'm on the Play store the Play Store itself updates itself.
When the time comes to install Whatsapp, I get an error: no space available ... I go in the Storage menu to check. Not much space: 15M indeed.
So I go to the Apps menu (in Gingerbread there was an option to free space by moving to the SD: this option was in the Storage menu, if I recall correctly, but I couldn't find it here so I went to the Apps).
Literally, as I am looking at the apps the Internal storage starts growing till 45MB (took a few seconds). Why is that?
Also, all apps except ROM manager are in the internal storage. Clicking on each app shows a button to move to SD, but such button is grayed out on every app. Now, I know some app cannot be moved to SD, but I do know that Whatsapp can: do you know why I can't move any of them to the SD?
Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions: it is the first time I install a custom ROM and I never used Jelly Bean before ...

The increasing app space is just regular lag in calculating remaining space.
And WhatsApp can't be moved for me too. If you're sure that it can be, maybe there's a setting like in CM7 to force move all apps to SD card, thus making the button usable.

Hey, isn't there the USB tethering bug in this rom? You may say it's not important, but just for the review to be comprehensive..

Nice review. From my own experience with JK 2.0 I can add two aspects:
1. GPS: Fixing GPS takes several minutes for me. Changing the NTP Server using FasterFix did not really help in my case. However, using the gps.conf from this thread fixed the issue for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447593 (Google Specific v3.1 build)
2. To change a picture in the gallery, I have to slide almost over the complete screen which is not too bad, but really annoying. I haven't find a way to change that behaviour yet.

About the 2nd problem, its due to the heavy scrolling in jb. No idea how to fix tho.

I can confirm that voice recognition isn't working.
And another thing, although the question may be a little misplaced here: Can I get (open-) PDroid running on JK? Or is the patch even already included in the rom?
Oops, forgot to mention that GNow voice search doesn't work. OP updated.
Although its not a ROM bug, since the voice search In Now is an ARMv7 feature. So it will never work / almost never work.

I've been using this for quite some time, and some very annoying bugs persist even after several reflashes (and I've switched quite a few ROMs, so I'm sure I'm doing it right).
For instance, the random reboots, which seem to choose to happen right when I need them not to.
And the data thing is also a big issue. If you stop using it for an hour or more (not sure how long) it just stops and you have to switch to airplane mode and back. Not that I'm too lazy to do that, but it stops apps like Facebook from getting live updates.
It's faster than other ROMs though, and the slow scrolling thing is fixed (kind of), which is cool, but it's just too unstable and I'm going back to either CM7 or Sense and soon as I have the time to.

[Q] The lag is killing me.

(I'm Dutch, so my English isn't anywhere near perfect, I'll try to explain my issue as good as possible)
The past month I have been dealing with a very annoying kind of lag on my LG G3. After trying to unroot my Nexus 5, I absolutely destroyed it and lots of things went wrong. After that, my phone wouldn't boot up anymore and I had to buy a new one, which was the LG G3. The phone looks good and all, and the specs are great, but my experience with the interface is that it tends to be very choppy and lags frequently. Since a few days my WhatsApp starts lagging as well. Whenever I want to send a message to someone, I start typing as usual, but after the first letter it freezes for a second or 1-2, and then it starts typing again. This is very frustrating because this causes me to make a lot of typos. My phone tends to freeze a lot in general, and in the 6 months I've had the G3, I had to take out the battery like 3 or 4 times already, because I couldn't turn if off manually.
I've attempted several things to solve it, like installing certain apps, deleting all unncessesary pictures/videos in order to clear up space, deleting all apps I never use. Nothing seems to work, though. In my opinion, despite the fact that the LG G3 is better when you look at the specs, the Nexus 5 will remain to be my number 1 favourite phone, because I have never experienced any kind of horrible lag like I do on my LG G3. It's too late though, now I have to deal with this phone for the time being, until I can afford a new one.
So, what should I do? Should I root my phone and install a custom ROM that increases overall performance and eliminates lag? Or are there any other things I should consider? Please let me know guys, I would really appreciate some kind help right here <3
I read somewhere that the LG keyboard lags upon typing if you have more than 2 languages set up. Try to reduce to one language only.
Thanks for the suggestion. Though, my LG-keyboard only has the Dutch language set up, no other language is selected. Tried using other keyboard such as Google Keyboard and Swiftkey, but to no avail unfortunately.
Ive found that Kit Kat is a lot more stable for the G3, I have the D850
Never had an experience like what you have. I think you can try to uninstall the necessary apps to check if it's caused by some of them, switch to another input method like Google keyboard to get rid of the type lagging. Good luck.
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Free mobile app
I've just got the phone to see how it performs and I'm struggling with the lag all around the system. Apps can take an age to open, the gallery is especially slow. There's just a distinct lack of smoothness.
I'm coming from the OPO, so have been blessed with the AOSP experience. I may flash an AOSP ROM, but I want to test the camera's true potential.
Ant recommendations? I'm trying out Chupa Chups 4.2 for the time being to see if that is any better.
Regards.

For @lynxboy I recommend BlissPop ROM, I'm using it and only wished I'd gone AOSP sooner. I'm also using the Motorola Camera apk which has all the Camera options of stock plus more. BlissPop also comes with its own camera based off CM and you can also install the Google Camera so you have 3 options there.
@Stefalicious There's not much you can do on stock to get rid of lag mate, I recommend you root and install a custom ROM. If you like the stock interface and layout you can flash something like CloudyG3 that is based off stock, otherwise BlissPop is amazing and is AOSP-Based.

How's the camera quality on AOSP though? I've been searching and keep reading that there's a significant hit in the output quality of images.
Regards.
@lynxboy depends on the Camera app you use. Personally, I use the Motorola one and get fantastic photos with the laser focus and either 1080p or 4k video is available so no issues there.
In the G3 General section there's a dedicated "Photos taken with the G3" thread so maybe if you asked in there for samples from people using AOSP ROMs you might get some replies?

Just an update. I installed Chupa Chups 4.2 and performed further debloating by uninstalling the majority of the LG apps including home, keyboard and messaging etc.
Now running Nova (material beta) and have built up the cache for most apps. There's still lag on system apps like Gallery and Phone, but it's much better than it was out of the box.
I guess the Korean OEM skins will never match AOSP for pure fluidity, but maybe I can cope with this for the time being.
I can always go back to the OPO if needs be.

i got a G3 a few days ago, cheap, as a backup phone to my M8. was really surprised at lag on the G3 like others, thought it would be a helluva lot smoother. originally ran stock, now running Cloudy 2.2 and Nova launcher in which IMHO, don't see any noticeable different from LG stock, although battery life is marginally better.
i did notice that running any live wallpaper will lag the homescreen considerably, no big deal, but for a phone of this calibre, should not be an issue. my M8 has never missed a beat on anything.
Thank you all for the great replies. It's both good and bad to see that I am not the only one dealing with these lags. I followed iDefalt's advice and decided to root my LG G3, install the TWRP custom recovery and flash a custom ROM. My personal preference went to CM12, just because of the looks. I haven't really looked at CloudyG3, and I don't know how CM12 and CloudyG3 compare to each other, but so far I must say that I am VERY impressed with CyanogenMod12. The performance has improved by a mile, I feel that the battery life has gone up slightly too, and of course the UI looks so sexy, just like it would on a Nexus 6 with Lollipop. I love it. Even my homescreen looks sexy!

Stock CM-12 is bug ridden just beware, most AOSP ROMs like BlissPop, etc. Have better battery life, overall better performance, and often fix the bugs in the stock CM-12 builds, so in all honesty it goes:
Custom-AOSP ROM > CM-12 > Custom Stock-Based ROM > Stock w/root > Stock
Anything is an upgrade from stock though. CloudyG3 is stock-based, not AOSP, just for future reference
For anyone looking for even more performance, you can install a custom kernel for your ROM. In CM-12's case, being AOSP-based, you can install the 777 kernel by 777-Jon, or the Furnace kernel. Both work really well, and BlissPop comes with the 777 kernel included in the ROM because it's that good.
Glad to see it got sorted out, I'm available for anymore questions!

To be fair it's using a GPU that was designed to push 1080p displays, not 1440p/Quad-HD displays, so a live-wallpaper running on a stock kernel will push the GPU. The reason your M8 runs better is because even though it's the same CPU and GPU underneath, the screen is only 1080p and not 1440p, therefore the GPU doesn't have to power nearly as many pixels (Twice as less, in fact. ) But if you want even more performance, you can install a custom stock-based kernel like the ChupaChups kernel that works with all Stock-Based custom ROMs and optimizes things a bit better
