We need to determine whats bricking our phones when flashing/using ICS ROMS. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the kernel and the way things are handled with partitions in the recoveries.
I bricked coming from GB to ICS, after I went from ICS to GB using a NANDROID. Also used Mobile Odin to flash el26 recovery. This is the jist of it, anyone have a similar story?
i NEVER bricked because i ALWAYS follow the rules.
ODIN EL26 Kernel (http://bit.ly/xL3kvm), reboot directly into recovery on auto-reboot (vol up + power), Flash CM9 .zip.. Flash GApps .zip.. Wipe Data... Reboot

;D Funny thing is I did all that after I flashed it with mobile odin. still bricked, and you were told how step by step
Way back in 1942 I had me one of them new Samsung Epic 4G Touch kinda phones. I did me a flash using Heimdall Frontend with that there "Repartition" square all checked and low and behold I got me a nice fancy blue light when I tried to get that phone all powered on. Well, I learned something that day.The next day I was getting me a new one for sure! Well, I did just that and have been very careful cuz them phones ain't cheap. But, since the new FB and FC ICS leaks have been dripping down the pipes I have been flashing like a mad man. I have flashed everything Calkulin has released, Heimdall bad kernels to the device, tried agat's nice little ROM, push and pull files, torn apart kernels and put them together wrong and tried them on the device and you name it, unless the name is switching between Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich. I have had kernel panics, File System panics and other people have panicked. I did get a scare once when I wiped data/system reset and couldn't boot. I push a good kernel and flashed another ROM toot sweet! I have not bricked it again for the life of me. Mr_Milenko asked me to share this I suppose as a success story amidst all the stories and rumors about why this device is bricking. Honestly, I can only speculate. Since it's not a problem that can be reproduced and recovered from we can't just perma-brick devices to run expermients so we have to really think about what we're doing now. We don't even know at this point if an OTA is going to be safer than the leaks of the problem isn't known to samsung. Once we have source we can look for weaknesses in the it. Until then maybe a thread with exact step leading up to the bricking might help others avoid some patterns of destruction. If you say you have ended up with the Blu Light of Death (BLD, cuz we loves acronyms) give as many technical details as possible, including what versions of rom and kernel you are coming from, what methods and versions of tools you may have used to flash/push/etc, and what version you were attempting to flash. If you wanna speculate, at least put the details in a separate paragraph so the devs can see the facts clearly.
Good Luck Y'all!
I'm hearing people of bricking using Mobile odin, I would just play it safe and use my pc to odin. I really wish this would get sorted out. I never had to worry about bricking on my evo4g, now that's all I hear about flashing in ics

What's bricking phones? Not wiping data and not using a stable recovery...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I was gonna say using mobile Odin was probably what caused the brick, but then I'll get a slew of people defending Mo'din. PC odin every time man, I've tried damn near all the ICS builds and feel using the PC to restore the EL29 rooted one click restore then sfhub one click CWM push is the safest way to avoid any complications. It takes a whole five minutes and no worries.

Not wiping data and not using a stable recovery? I wiped data, and I was on EL26.
Can anyone direct me to a full Odin tar a pit file so i can try and repartition my phone via odin?

Hopefully this works. I wiped data while on a cm9 build using its version of CWM. Hopefully I can repartition via odin using pit and tar file. Will keep you guys updated.

Not to burst your bubble and you should try anyway, but if you are in the situation where your data partition is not writable, people who have tried repartitioning with ODIN found it didn't fix the problem. Even JTAG has not been able to fix the problem, so the conclusion of most people is there is a hardware issue that was caused by a software operation with incompatible kernel and recovery.

The subjects of eFuses even came up.. Could there be undocumented hardware information that we don't know about? So many possibilities its really irritating.
I just need a link or some information on how to install cyanogenmod 9 from EL29, I'm currently running Calkulin's EL29 v3.0, and then I was wondering how do I come back from ICS without bricking?
I'd appreciate the response so i don't screw up my wonderful new phone! ^^

To go back to GB just flash the EL26 kernel with CWM through Odin. When rebooting hold power + volume up until it boots into recovery and flash from there.

I commend you on being careful but just so you know this forum has more than enough info in it to ensure you do everything correct and minimize your chances of bricking..

I've heard to odin just the el26 kernel + cwm and also the whole el26 rom before flashing ICS, more specifically the AOsP variations so which is it? Or which is safer? It would kind of make sense to Odin the whole rom to restore a gb nandroid. There's just so many conflicting methods its cornfuzzling

No not really conflicting if you look at them slowly. Its basically get back to a GB kernel at the end of the day. They say to odin it since you do not want to or have any other way to get a GB kernel on your phone if you are on ICS. Now you could flash from ICS but that is what people are trying to avoid since it could cause a brick.
Basically: When on ICS
1. Odin a GB CWM recovery(now others have used EL29 and Rogue recoveries as well) I personally use a stock CWM recovery from CM7 and Miui
2. From there you can wipe and flash and do nandroids as normal.
Option: Safest bet
1. One Click Odin your choice of any of the GB stock roms by sfhub
I have used both methods so far with no problems. I had CM9 on my phone then used odin to go back to the recovery used with CM7 and then I nandroid back my UnNamed Rom. I did this a few times without issue. I have never heard of any issues with anyone using any of the above two methods I mentioned. If someone has please inform us

I was more confused about whether to Odin(mobileodin) just the kernel + cwm or the entire rom, all the install instructions say Odin kernel with cwm(usually el26) which is what I'm using for ics, I use rogue gunslinger for GB, but then I've seen ppl say to Odin the entire rom before restoring/upgrading/changing roms so i was like
Wtf which is it do I Odin the kernel or the whole rom when i upgrade :-| I've been trying to figure that out for a cpl days b4 I upgrade my AOKP to build 31, cuz I really don't want a paperweight

I've searched around and I don't know how to just odin a kernel, so I use sfhubs one-click back to el26 then I use autoroot to install el26 +cwm.
I would like to just odin a kernel and flash from there, but i am unsure of the procedure, do you do this:
phone to download mode and connect to odin, use PDA slot and browse to kernel, hit start or GO or whatever it is, then when it starts to reboot, pwr+vlm up to get into recovery, then get my flash on from there?
I use mobile Odin for the kernel alone but I believe in PC Odin you can just select PDA and choose the kernel. Tar and flash it that way then when it starts to reboot either catch the volume up + power on the splash screen or do like I do and snatch the battery real quick and the boot to recovery, everytime I try to hit it while its rebooting Im too slow

I havent used mobile odin, but I hear nothing but good things, so I think I am gonna grab it and try it out. That way I wont need to be at a PC to get my flash on.
With mobile odin, do I keep the kernel on my sdcard, same place I put roms and such? And when using mobile odin, if the file is *.tar.md5, do I remove the .md5 from the file name first? Do I use the flash firmware option?
I've done this at least 25 times recently; so easy, I'll post instructions here again.
1. get Mobile Odin(time saver to the max)
2. Get EL26 kernel (TAR version)
3. flash EL26 kernel in Mobile Odin (takes 10 seconds)
4. Boot into recovery(you will have the proper one now!)
5. Flash away
if you do this either coming from A GB rom to ICS, or going back to one, Guaranteed success...
Simple as can be; not sure why this keeps getting asked.....
The kernel is 8.1 mb, which exceeds the attachment size, so I can't post it here, but its all over this forum..

Yea u can keep em in a folder on internal SD that's what I do and just open the location it will find all tar files in that location then just select and follow directions, mOdin works really good its quick and no flash counter in crease or yellow triangle. Its alot easier to flash ics than having to go to the PC cuz u can just Odin el26+cwm kernel boot to recovery and get ur flash on without all the hassle of drivers and connecting a USB etc

My question was for when going back to gb from ics if I needed to Odin the whole rom, I had seen both kernel+cwm only and whole rom and just wanted to make sure if I just flashed the kernel only I'd be OK more for clarification than an actual how to for me since I know how to Odin both, just wanted to make sure I was odining the right things b4 I jumped and landed on a brick after I had seen someone say to Odin the whole rom I wanted to be sure I was doing it right since I had seen both ways mentioned. Its a little more confusing than my damn evo where I'm always on the same recovery no matter what, and a bit scary with the bricks flying around like a construction site filled with monkeys on meth

well, like the asshole who pushed me in the deep end of the pool when I was 12 and didn't know how to swim told me, "figure it out or else", sometimes you gotta just go for it!!

Quick question.. I can flash EL26 kernel again in mobile odin and should be able to restore my Blazer backup without any issues, correct? Blazer was backed up using Rogue EL29 kernel. Thanks!
Plus there's 5 android devices in my house all with different flashing methods it gets confusing keeping em all straight, got the evo4g, et4g, kindle fire, MoPho, and a gNote the et4g is the first Sammy I've used with Odin, my first android was an intercrap I mean intercept and it used the patched swupdater instead of Odin, so I'm still getting the hang of this method. I can flash the evo, kindle, intercept and photon blindfolded and drunker than a slut on prom night

I don't know how you keep all that **** straight; in my house, we ALL go with one "brand" of product, just to avoid that nightmare!!
If someone doesn't like it, I tell them that they get no tech support from me if they don't go with "the flow"!
I purchased this phone yesterday after a great year with my Evo and two with a Hero before that. Even though I haven't posted alot I've been rooting and customizing my phones for years. I was even to the point with the file system and stuff that I would add and remove things from roms before I flashed them so I feel like I know what I'm doing with an Android phone.
This thing is a whole other animal though as far as I'm concerned. I've searched, I've read and I still don't understand half the lingo used here. I don't even know how to ask the questions I want to ask honestly. I hate having to jump through hoops just to flash a ROM.
I am rooted. Baseband is el29, kernel is 2.6.35.14-rogue_ET-1.4.1+ and build is Calkulin 3.0. I installed Rom Manager from the market and got the official Clockwork Mod Recovery because I didn't like the recovery that was put on my phone when I rooted.
So from here with the setup I explained what roms can I just place on my sd card and flash through recovery after a wipe? I don't want downgrade to a previous anything or change a modem or use Odin because I don't know what any of that stuff means and there is no where I can find that it's explained very well.
I appreciate any help that is offered and I know I come off as negative but so far this phone is extremely intimidating to do anything with and I don't want to brick it. I never worried about bricking my Evo cause I'm not sure that's even possible anymore
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I worked on a friends EVO once and didn't understand half of what you guys had to do to root and flash so the feeling is mutual, lol. First off if you're going to switch to ICS start on the EL26 kernel with CWM. Anything else and you risk a hard brick. Odin is actually the easiest to flash with. Sfhub has Odin one-click that makes it easy as hell.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869
And here's a really good how-to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391732
And download mobile Odin, DON'T use ROM Manager. That will almost certainly brick your phone. Just delete it to be safe.
one of the things you're going to have to get used to with this phone, is that the kernels and recoveries are tied together. Its not like any other android phone i ever used that you could swap out kernels and use whichever recovery you wanted.
You have a Samsung phone now. You are in the promised land. Samsung phones are a lot easier to work with than HTC phones.
Basically any ROM here can be flashed using Clockwork Mod Recovery unless it says otherwise. I'd like to point you over to QBKing77's youtube channel. He has a ton of "how to's" and reviews for a lot of ROMs on the E4GT.
http://www.youtube.com/user/qbking77
I'm sure you'd appreciate that. My family uses HTC phones and whenever they want something done to their phone, I tear up and hope that QBKing77 got an EVO since the last time I needed him.
Also the great thing about Samsung is that if you do happen to brick your phone, Odin will save your life.
If you have any question feel free to PM me or something
You cannot use a GB kernel with an ICS ROM and you cannot use an ICS kernel with a GB ROM.
Coming from stock EL29 you can use the Oneclicks to upgrade to the newer FD ROMs or just flash most through CWM unless they state otherwise.
If you do decide to go ICS(FD24 FD26 etc) and want to go back to GB ROMs, you need to flash the EL26+CWM through Odin(which isn't as complicated as you think) and go right to recovery as the phone tries to reboot, then flash the GB rom.
Seriously check out qbking though, he is the biggest help and his videos are phenomenal. Hope that helps a little.

You need to used Odin to flash EL26+cwm.tar. However, you do not need a computer, I use mobile odin android app religously. It is definitely worth the 5 bucks. For mobile odin just keep the EL26+cwm.tar on your phone, when you want to leave a rom open mobile odin app, point it to that .tar and flash. Then you will have the best copy of cwm on your phone and can start wiping/flashing any roms, kernals, or modems.

Edit: Found it!, but i have 2 files one i found that was StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 which is like 8megs, but i did d/l SPH-D710.EL26_CL839620_ROM_ROOTED-sfx.exe, and extracted it via 7zip, then found the 400 meg .tar... which one should i use?
Btw, thanks for your help!

First off if you're going to switch to ICS start on the EL26 kernel with CWM. Anything else and you risk a hard brick. Odin is actually the easiest to flash with. Sfhub has Odin one-click that makes it easy as hell.

And here's a really good how-to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391732
And download mobile Odin, DON'T use ROM Manager. That will almost certainly brick your phone. Just delete it to be safe.

SORRY JUST WANT TO REPEAT SOME GREAT WORDS... DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER... that is all
So say I wanted go from Calk's gb to his ICS, if I make a nandroid of the gb rom then install the ICS one and don't like it for some reason I can't just nandroid back?

You can nandroid right back! You will have to have a kernel that will let you use CWM such as FD02 or EL26 to get to recovery for the nandroid.

Thanks for all the helpful tips and links. I too am switching from the OG EVO to the Galaxy S2 tomorrow and was concerned about flashing. I feel better now.

Thanks for all the help but I'm strongly considering returning this phone. I've read till my head hurts and the most common words I see here is brick. I don't want to take that chance. How anyone could think dealing with an Evo is worse than this I don't understand. With the Evo you put the rom on the sd card, wipe, and flash. No worrying if you have the right modem/kernel/cwm combination. It's a nice phone, but I really regret buying it now. 3g is also slooooooow.

I came from the Hero myself...and my first post in this forum looked much like yours. I even went and installed ROM manager thinking I was doing the right thing...lol
Take your time and read up before you do anything...Odin/mobile Odin is actually very easy to use and the safest, even without the one click files. As with others on here if you need some help feel free to PM.

I also recently moved to this phone from the evo. The epic touch blows the evo away in every way possible! There is definitely some studying to be done but its worth it! Once you get the hang of things its a breeze.
Same here. I've had the phone since latter part of December and have not rooted it yet ...mostly because my laptop has the screen of death. But noticed the slight difference in the method in flashing roms on the E4GT. But after seeing some video on that AOKP rom I'm getting antsy and need to get my computer fixed!!

Ok so this is going to be newbie-like question but i just need it to find of a definite answer. What is the safest way to flash from ICS to Gingerbread using Mobile odin pro. I bricked my phone yesterday and thank all that tried to help. Luckily the good folks at sprint charged my only 35 dollars to replace without insurance. Don't want to make that mistake again. For the new people that don't know, or find it hard to find info... My brick was done when I flashed AOKP ICS Rom and it started with a barrage of force closes, I rebooted and got stuck on the pink unicorn boot animation. I then went to recovery to try to wipe to stop force closes... Needless to say, R.I.P. First E4GT. I have flashed a million times. Just need a real answer as to how to go from ICS to GB with Mobile odin. I use the EL29 quick boot kernel and do have the EL26 Kernel as well. Thank you all that tried to help yesterday and those with a real answer today

I would say the easiest method for going back to GB would be to use one of sfhub's one-click restores from your PC. I'd recommend the EL29 option .
If you prefer to do it with Mobile Odin download the above file and follow these instructions:
1) Install ZArchiver.
2) Open ZArchiver and navigate to where the downloaded .exe file was saved.
3) Long press SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe.
4) Open as archive.
5) Select SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe.
6) Select Extract.
8) Select where to save the file to (don't change the name).
8) Open Mobile Odin.
9) Open the SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe.
10) Flash Firmware.
That should take care of you.
Good luck!
What I've always done is just mobile odin the el26 cwm kernel whenever I need to switch roms. Doesnt matter if its ICS or GB since you'll be flashing from a safe recovery.

Thanks. Your advice a couple weeks ago made the prices so simple.
When in doubt, Mobile Odin el26 before flashing. If you get the urge to try something different, put your phone down and walk away. Lol

Finally someone answered lol! Thank you guys for both methods... Just need an definitive answer for this question... So if i am on an ICS Rom. I can mobile odin EL26 kernel, go directly into recovery and flash using the usual methods (calk wipe and flash)?
Question 2. Can i use the EL26 Kernel (Or the EL29 with CWM Baked Kernel) to make an ICS Nandroid?
Thank you guys again... Not trying to hard brick twice in 24 hrs and i don't think sprint will be so nice next time lol.

To answer your first question, yes.
I'm pretty sure its yes to question 2 as well buy I'm actually not big on nandroid since i have all my apps backed up. Normally if something goes wrong, I just flash a different ROM and start fresh. Lol

I hear you on the Nandroid. I have all my prized apps backed up with apps backup and restore... I love the app. I just hate organizing all apps and folders (a lil o.c.d. with that) as well as setting up like 8 different email accounts... It gets to be a pain. Thank you for answering my question, very appreciated. By the way, to anyone reading... I saw a new rom on here that states AGAT recovery can flash ICS to ICS. I was doing that yesterday with no problem (using AGAT Recovery) but i would like to know if it is safe... I am going to stick to the EL26 or EL29 Kernel method. One Hard brick is enough for a lifetime, let alone 24hrs
I have model SPH-D710.
I followed the guide here.
I had no problems whatsoever until the final reboot. Now my phone's stuck at the 2nd loading animation... the one with the android on the skateboard in the middle of the screen with the blue things coming at you.
I can boot into Odin mode. I cannot, however, boot into recovery mode.
Is there anything I can do? Did I totally screw up my phone to where I'm going to just have to buy a new one and cry about it because my dad would have killed me for voiding my warranty on "such an expensive phone?"
Try regular booting again
This happened on my og epic and my nexus s when I install cm9
Just holding the power button to tun off them holding it to turn on helps
Also it takes a while to boot up

I'm going to have to let it charge now... It died sitting on that animation for the last hour.
So... it's still not working
This is what you do
Odin to el29
Get root and recovery (just get cwm nothing fancy like rogue)
Go to recovery
Wipe everything
THen install cm9
You have have flashed from an pics recovery and that doesn't work so use el29

Don't think it was mentioned but Alpha 5 does not have recovery, this was done to prevent people from doing stupid things like factory resetting or installing roms.
The nightly builds have a safe recovery as well as themselves safe to flash on ICS recoveries if you need to head that direction next. But a replacement for Alpha 5 will be out in eventuality with all that as well.
I got it to work after I flashed back to GB and then back to alpha 5.
No idea what went wrong before, but it works now!
You probably flashed from an ics recovery
For some reason we can't get rom flashing on ics to work
Every one has been using Odin to go to el29 or at least they flashed the kernel with the recovery of el29 them flashed the rom

EL29?
Am I missing something here? I've been using EL26 to flash.
Should I be using EL29? Because i don't want be doing something that can potentially harm my phone.

You can use the EL26 kernel on EL29 some people flash just the EL26 kernel for recovery, other people odin to EL29 and use the auto rooter to flash the EL26 CWM or EL29 Rogue kernel. Last i checked the CM9 brick from flashing with Rogue is a simple soft brick easily fixed with odin.

My friend you may have a little homework to do. Things have improved greatly for us in reference to flashing roms with certain recoveries and kernels for ICS. I for one use the nightlys for CM9 and flashing roms and wiping has been fixed.
Do yourself a favor and stroll through development and read up on the new stuff that has come about over the last couple weeks or so.
Enjoy guys and OP glad you got your phone back up and running. Next time don't panic!
