Hi there,
My E4GT is going into roam for no good reason. Has anyone else experienced this?
I am in Metro Detroit, and this is what happened.
I rooted my first phone, and had the loss of service issue with it.
One night, while I was sleeping with the phone charging on my nightstand, it beeped a couple times. I thought it was a text message. When I looked at the phone, it had a message on the screen that said that I am now going into Roaming mode, and may be charged more for this, do I accept or cancel.
I thought it was because I had rooted my phone so I just rebooted my phone.
After I rebooted my phone, it did it again, two more times!
I returned that phone, and got a brand new one. I have NOT rooted the new one.
Today I was in Livonia Michigan (city area, plenty of towers) and I was stationary at an office. The phone went into roam again, and asked if I want to accept this or not?!? I rebooted, and it did it again. This all on a stock virgin phone.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any idea as to what I should do?
Thanks -Aaron

mines been doing the same thing for the last couple days even when connected to my airvanna which makes no sense
Getting it too but in a couple specific places which are my basement at home and at the office. This hasn't happened with any of my previous sprint phones.

happens to me on 3 diff phones
network upgrades perhaps..towers comign up and down would kick your over to romaing
Same thing happening to me often.
happens to me too
Maybe Sprint is upgrading their towers so the iPhone congestion doesn't screw **** up.

I got the answer from a sprint tech support guy, that knew what he was talking about!
go to settings-> wireless and networks-> Roaming-> Roaming settings
Then make sure that "Data" is checked off, along with "voice".
The phone comes without the 'Data" choice selected, and that causes this roaming condition.

Several people on the OG epic noticed this also, its gotten better, but still happens to me when it never did in these areas before...

I had the same issue all day yesterday in Chicago. But I also noticed coworkers had signal issues as well. I think there were tower issues in the area.

Yeah, it's happening to me, and another person in my home that owns an OG Epic... and we have an Airave hooked up in the house, so it shouldn't be roaming at all using an Airave.
Happened to me on day 1 in Troy, Mi. It's one of the reasons I ultimately returned it, the signal seemed quite a bit weaker than my Evo. I hope the upcoming Samsung ultra-phone doesn't share radios with the SGSII.
I was wondering if a different radio would work better? If anyone had any input please get back to me, because this is annoying
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Xparent ICS Blue Tapatalk 2
well, it depends on what radio you are on. We can't answer that for you. You would have to flash the radio to find out. Some have had luck with the latest radios, while others have not. Supposedly, there is a firmware update coming from Samsung on the 22nd to fix these issues. We'll see. Another way to fix your issues is to go to a Verizon store or call them and politely complain until you get them to send you a new one. If you are within your 14 day return period, just take it in and exchange it until you get one that works properly. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems with mine.
I was having absolutely horrible service as you are...call Sprint and tell them your calls are dropping, texts aren't going though and nothing works and they'll walk you through how to reset it...I did that today after wasting 3 hours at the Sprint store only to be told "there was a network /tower problem", which there wasn't...called Sprint, talked to one of the techs & he straightened everything out.
So, the update that Samsung is going to roll out, it will work on a rooted phone? Yes, I've read that the new radio is working for some people. Thanks for the reply
I've had a problem where texts sent to me sometimes arrive an hour later. During the times when I'm having this problem anyone who calls me will go straight to voicemail. Outgoing call and texts are not affected. Basically it's as if the phone 'spaces out' from the network on occasion
Other members have reported similar issues.
What is known so far is that: It's not the SIM, it's not a network or provisioning issue.
Is it the phone? Is it the ROM? That remains to be seen.
I've gotten in touch with someone at ATT who is agressively pursuing the issue.
What you can do to help is, if you are having this problem too, please post here. Mention what ROM & kernel you are running, which state you are in and any other relevant details so we can see if it's a widespread problem. It is especially interesting to see if anyone running unrooted stock has it. Otherwise it could be blamed on the user
DEVS weigh in here - is there any way rooting can affect the GSM radios in this way?
I have problems sending texts sometimes and sometime I randomly lose service and the only way to get it back is put it in airplane mode or reboot i ve had this happen on all roms even stock I'm in tooele and data speeds suck there

I've had issues with call quality and texts not being delivered to one person, however I have not had any noticeable difficulties with other people, so I assumed it was an issue on their end. Perhaps not. I'm running stock rooted Android.
(They are also on AT&T.)
I've had this issue with AT&T since the days of Cingular. Makes me ::GLEE:: that my contract will be up in October, going to T-Mobile, unlimited everything (oh noes, data throttling at 2GB) for $65/month? Yes.
Also thoroughly documented here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1615761
I've had this issue with stock, Inception, and now OsiMood. I'm in KY. It seems that it'll randomly chooses to ignore all calls and texts for an hour or more, and when it finally decides to start working again, all those messages will show up at the same time and calls will start to ring through. People who call me claims that it rings on their end, so it seems like I'm just not answering the call, rather than going to straight to voicemail as if the phone was off, or out of service area.
~Azrael's Kiss~
Not quite the same
I had this issue with a moto bravo a while back where it would "send" the text but it would never make it past the network, also texts from phones wouldn't go through but I could receive AT&T texts (data usage, minutes left, email to text). Ended up taking about 3 days of talking to AT&T reps that finally did a hard reset of some sort and refreshed all the provisioning. The last tech I had spoke to told me it was because my phone was appearing registered on 2 different AP's (micro-cell / main tower) and that it wasn't de-registering from the micro-cell. Not sure if it helps any but it might give you a talking point for the AT&T techs who can seem less then helpful at times.
I've had the problem with stock and osimood. The problem isn't persistent, and Sometimes I think rebooting fixes the problem.

Rebooting does tend to fix it. As does cycling through airplane mode for like 15 secs. But sometimes it'll go right back into that zombie state after a few minutes.

I've called ATT and talked to them and they say powering down the phone once a day is the only way to fix it... with a cdma network I never had a problem with texts or calls not goin through... as as far as stock or rooted my wifes phone is the one that does it the worse and hers is solid stock. Mines not to bad but I do get the problem with texts not comin in that much but very annoying when I pay almost 200 a month and the **** works half the time. Tends to get really frustratin

For a while I had the problem of my captivate glide not ringing at all, but then the call gets forwarded to google voice and I see a missed call. This was pretty common until two weeks ago when I upgraded to ICS. It has not happened since.
Text messages always come through quickly. Occasionally the email-to-SMS gateway messages were delayed for about 10 hours, but I think it's been about a year since that happened, so I think they improved the reliability of that system.
I kind of blame the modem firmware (the curse of proprietary software). It have happened to me a lot whenever I am using Internet, and sometimes I receive the text immediately when I am online. I usually send text to myself to wake the cellular modem up.

I have the problem once in a while but its also a cause from my network provider as they are known for it and others I know have this problem on other phones.

Keyboard fix
Superuser 3.2r3 ARM Optimized

True. Unfortunately, there's way too much variables within the cellular networks, making it difficult to blame on who and what. Same with WiFi.

I've had this problem on at&t when I had my Motorola back flip, and now also on my glide.
Also, the g/f has had the problem on her non smart phone.
It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
It was happening a LOT during the time when at&t was upgrading their lines and equipment to deploy 4G in this area. (We've only had 4G a few months here)
In the past week, I've had it happen 3 times on my glide where I will get 8 - 14 copies of the same txt all at once, but the sender says they only sent it once.
This could just be bugs in the official ICS release from a couple weeks ago, idk.

FWIW, I'm on an MVNO that's on AT&T's network, but I'm using Google Voice for texting, and texts always arrive within seconds. I know that doesn't use the SMS system, but hell, I'm just trying to be helpful.
Isn't there a way to port your current number to a different carrier (i.e. Google) without breaking contract? I remember there being something like that, the stipulation being you had to pay some $$ in fees and get a new number (which you'd need for Voice forwarding anyway). Still a hell of a lot cheaper than an ETF.
I'm on straight talk which is mvno of att. It happens to me too.. stock, not rooted either

So I recently JUST got my Galaxy Nexus, well I connected it to my phone line not even an hour ago. Well I am having trouble connecting to 3G or 4G.
I live in San Antonio TX so I doubt its my signal. I have a Sprint Galaxy Nexus, Not Root (I don't want to mess with it until this Issue is fixed because what if I have to take it to the Sprint store and they won't change it due to the fact that it is rooted.)
FG01 Update. ICS 4.0.4.
Can anyone please help me ASAP.
sprint wont help? why not call them on the phone it takes a long time but that might get you a replacement.also maybe try updating prl and profile and if all that fails contact samsung.
UPDATE: if you just put it on the line it does take a while for data to come on i had this issue when i switched to a iphone 4s for a couple days it should fix itself after a while. patience
Ok. I'll try to go to bed and See tomorrow. and the deal is that I just connected this phone so I doubt they'll give me a Replacement the FIRST day I connect a phone.
I'll try maybe calling Sprint Customer Support. I'll keep this thread updated.

good luck and they should replace it if its having reception issues, if the people in the store give you a hard time always call sprint ive gotten monthy fees waved before because of bad reception and issues.
OK, they fixed it, had to reset something like *#*# something. Anyways, is the Charger LED light supposed to turn on. Because mine isn't...

I don't think so, my doesn't turn on while charging either.
By the way, do you happen to remember the code? Since I bought this phone, a week ago, I notice very bad reception, most of the time I have like two bars and sometimes it drops the connection.

For the passed week or 2 I have been getting duplicate text messages. It can be anywhere from 2 or sometimes as many as 8-10 messages that show up in my inbox when somebody just sends me one SMS. Its driving me crazy. I'm rooted so I'm hesitant to contact sprint. I havent found an answer by searching google or the forums. Can anyone offer any tips I can try?

My service is so so ... Nothing has really changed as far as the service is concerned. Also it seems to happen regardless of my location (work/home) this is my forth android phone with sprint. Over the years I've had a few times where I would get duplicate texts here and there on various phones but never anything like this. I fear that a factory reset may be in my future

You have an airave? That might be part of the problem..from how I understand, has to do with delivery protocols...airave will double them at times. Power off airave, then reboot it. Might help, might not

Almost a month later..still have the problem. If somebody texts me once I may get that text 10 times over a day or 2...sometimes even more. I called sprint. They did a soft reset of my phone and advised me if it happens again to try a factory reset. I did a factory reset, wiped cache, dalvik cache. The second my phone booted up after the reset (not a single app installed) I got two duplicate texts from earlier that day. I guess my last hope is to wipe my rom and do a clean install of the rom. It's just the sprint factory rom for 4.1.1 with root. If that doesn't fix it then I guess I need a new phone

I had this problem for 1 day and then it went away.
Try a reactivation. Dial ##72786#.
It's not the device (phone) its usually a carrier error happens when you have a weak signal and your phone is switching from 1x to 3g or 4G or between wifi and regular data. The others here are correct it is not the phone, unless the antenna is messed up. Have you also checked to see if the duplicate texts are always from the same individuals? It could weak signal on their part, their carrier or device is actually sending it out twice. I had something similar with texts coming in from att once.
Transmitted with a portable device using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
I have been with Sprint since the beginning - about 14 years? I have also have had the original non data Airave and the latest Airave with data.
It is not your phone, maybe sometimes the Airave?, but the problem is with Sprint. Most of the time everything is normal, but then are times when I will get the same text an extra two and sometimes up to four times for a few days straight, then it goes away.
So save yourself the anguish of a hard reset or flash, it is not your phone and most assuredly Sprints network. Also note, it happens to me more frequently and of course randomly in the last 3 or 4 years.
I hate hard resets and re-flashing!
I had this exact issue on AT&T and it turned out to be an app that had permissions to intercept text messages to display an unread number on a widget. The app was blocking the phone from sending a text received signal to the tower.
I very much appreciate the responses. I realize what everyone is saying about it not being the phone and most likely being a sprint issue. I totally have been in agreement up until recently I started suspecting the phone. Like others here I have been with sprint for several years. I have also lived in the same area for all of those years. My phone doesnt roam, doesnt switch between 3 and 4g in my area. This is also my fifth android phone (first was the hero) and my 8th smart phone. I have over the past several years OCCASIONALLY received duplicate texts from one or more of my android phones. What I have experienced with my gs3 is far from occasional. It is constant. We are talking the same text repeated 18 times. It happens every day. Not once or a few times a week but literally multiple times every day. It isn't with one or 2 specific contacts but with multiple contacts included automated texts such as texts from twitter updates. It happened on a clean install. Flashed modem, kernel and ROM. All stock touch wiz sprint stuff. Not a single third party app installed. Previously I did the service reactivation and it helped slightly. I tried it again 2 days ago, roughly a week after flashing the clean ROM and I will say that it has helped a lot. Over the past 2 days I have only received one duplicate text and it only came through twice. If this was the norm then I would be more than happy. Time will tell if it is fixed or not and I will definitely update this thread.
The reason I suspect the phone is because of the immense frequency of the problem. My theory is that if the radio or antenna is weak or failing then this could be why the frequency is so high. Also, I have been experimenting with using the phone with and without the case on and it seems to be worse when the. Case is on. So, in theory if the antenna is weak then the case makes it even harder for the signal to get through. I could be off base but that's my theory.
Also, my daughter has my hand me down galaxy s2. She has zero duplicate texts. We live in the same house and go to the same places. Her phone has never had the issue. I dunno. Maybe the gs3 in general has a weak radio or maybe its my specific phone. Either way its totally frustrating and I doing want to deal with it any longer.

One note to your theory - your daughter has an S2 which although is 4G, it is WiMax 4G and your S3 is LTE 4G - your daughter's S2 will not have the same trouble as your S3 because the 4G WiMax towers have been up and running for a while, while Sprint is still working on the LTE 4G, so that could be one of your problems.
With that being said, I am sort of in the same situation, my wife doesn't have the text problem as often or severe as mine as she has an original Epic WiMax 4G and I have a S3 LTE 4G, although my worst case has been repeating text maybe 3 or 4 in a row and then sometimes the same text come to me like an hour to two hours later, but this only happens in spurts every once in a while, as the spurts of duplicate texts happen maybe every other couple of months and only last for like a day, then everything is fine again. I also have been in the same location for the 14 or so years that I have been with Sprint. Anyways, just a thought.
That's a good point. Maybe it has something to do with it. I thought that SMS used the phones voice network though rather than data? I thought only MMS used data. BTW I have never received a duplicate MMS. Also there is no 4g lte in my area yet.
Thanks for your thoughts.
