New to Android, looking for advice - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I just got this phone (Samsung Galaxy S2, Epic 4G Touch) a few months ago. I'm tired of waiting for ICS to come out. I already know that I have a hard brick bug chip (from running the checker app someone here made). I think here are all of my options:
1. Install a leaked ICS ROM. Can I be safe from bricking if I do it right?
2. Install Cyanogenmod ICS. Am I safe here?
3. Wait for ICS or Jelly Bean to be released from Sprint for my phone. How long will that take??
What I want:
1. ICS
2. Better battery life: is this a kernel or ROM thing?
3. Candied Bacon

I would wait, supposedly ICS is rumored to roll out by Samsung on the 20th, so I wouldn't risk it...But, if you insist, I would personally go with Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6, just make sure to flash it correctly (I recommend Flash EL26, then Cyanogen in its CWM recovery) Just make sure you read through the bug list in Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6 first to make sure that everything you need is working. Honestly though, I would just wait for the update by Samsung if you want to play it safe.

Thanks guys. I've been googling articles on the release date for months and finally when I decide to ask here, it's out. :silly: Can't wait to get the update, hope I get it soon. Thanks!

You can wait for the offical ota update. but just because it started today doesn't mean you'll get it today or tomorrow. I know I had to wait a week with my old epic 4g(not touch). you can look thru the different roms to see which one would fit your needs better. If you odin the leaked FF18 version you will be safe. Battery life mostly depends on how you use your phone and what settings you have. when i was running GB i had mine undervolted, sync turned off and screen brightness turned way down. The biggest thing about flashing ICS roms is follow the OP's instuctions. Since we now have the new ICS kernel (from source code) flashing ICS to ICS should be safe. but I can't say for sure i haven't tried it yet.
What is candied bacon? never heard of it

Candied bacon is bacon cooked with brown sugar on it.
Would me installing an FF18 today be any different than the one to be pushed out later? Does Cyanogenmod have FF18 for my phone? Or is that not how Cyanogenmod works..
So a ROM is specific to a phone, and a kernel is specific to a ROM, but is a kernel specific to a ROM for a phone, or is a kernel specific to any phones's version of a ROM? S*** just got confusing..
If I use Sprint's pushed ROM, will I become unrooted? Do new ROMs come with new accompanying kernels?
Ugh I'm so confused.

AWESOME

Yes! If you use sfhub's One-Clicks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229 you will have FF18 AND root. If you update the OTA you will lose ROOT.
Does Cyanogenmod have FF18 for my phone? Or is that not how Cyanogenmod works..
Yes there is a CM9 for this phone (right now on Alpha 6). IF you plan on flashing that make absolutely sure you follow the precise instructions or you will surely paper weight your phone! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563658

Yes it can be confusing! So please, please take some time to read through the stickies and posts here! A little time spent reading through all the threads will save you killing your device.
Good luck

Thanks for your help! I'll be sure to browse the stickies around here.
So what do you suggest to me? Installing Cyanogenmod 9 A6, or a rooted FF18? Also, will I be able to keep all of my data when installing these?
edit: It looks like both options will reset my data. I was really hoping to avoid that. I'm wondering how to save data from things like certain games...
edit2: Also, I am wondering if I can customize my boot up screen with Cyanogenmod, because SAMSUNG doesn't allow you to do it with their dumb custom boot animation format. I havn't seen anything about being able to do it with C9 on a phone with Samsung's custom boot anim format.

If you use sfhub's one click 'no data' it will preserver your data and give you FF18 plus root.
Since you are just starting out that is what I would recommend. It will give root, keep your data and the latest modem and everything (stock) Touch Wiz
If you want CWM you can use Mobile Odin [ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro&hl=en ] to add Agat's latest safe recovery found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 One of the best paid apps around if you plan on doing any modding. Watch the tutorial and read how to use it. Pretty simple. Biggest issue I found is that when selecting a kernel or other update you have to scroll down (way down) to click on apply update - easy to miss.
Again take the time and read through the entire posts. Many times questinon you are going to ask (or will come up with soon enough) will be answered.
Welcome and hope you enjoy the phone.
and if I or anyone else helps you out feel free to click on that 'thanks' button.

Thanks, I'll install sfhub's NODATA. Now I'm wondering whether to give my brother the stock install or to root his... He has the same phone.

You can also download titanium backup or my backup. Both are in the market. I use it to back up all my apps. There are other programs to backup SMS and call logs. Sometimes you can have issues with not wiping the data.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

You really can't go wrong with sfhub's one-clicks. They are essentially OTAs (released to development) that sfhub as added root to and made them unbelievably simple to use. And since the Sprint OTA build is FF18 your good to go. Just don't take the OTA if you are presented with it as you'll lose root.
With root you will be able to use some great tools (Titanium Backup, Mobile Odin, WiFi tether etc.) and be able to remove loads of carrier 'bloatware'.
I'd start that way and read up on using CWM and the different tools and options here.

I flashed ICS, but personally I wish I had stayed on GB for a little while longer. ICS is going out over the air today, and it would be nice to allow the devs a little more time with it. I recommend Calkulins latest GB ROM.

Personally, I recommend MIJJz ICS. There's a couple of versions to meet your needs. I use "Goodness" which has all the bells and whistles. I imagine with the official ICS release coming out that he'll be updating his ICS Roms soon, especially Goodness. If you try it out, let us know what you think.

I've been running sfhub's NODATA ICS ROM for the past day and Agat's Kernel and it's been running pretty well. Thanks all!
I have been considering Mijjs Goodness, thanks for that.

Blend ICS?

It seems like Mijjz's Blend ICS ROM is getting a lot of hits and could be a daily driver. I use my phone for work so I have been a little hesitant to jump on the ICS wagon until reading more. After digging, I still have some questions from the folks using it now...
Is it REALLY as easy as formatting and installing from the ZIP? I'm running Blazer's ROM now..
Does Exchange work?
GPS (without needing to complete some sort of Vodoo ritual)?
Just back up your current setup. That way if you don't like it you can go back.
You can flash from gb rogue recovery(not touch recovery) to ics. Make sure you wipe everything well. (except sd card)
If you go back, make sure to use the 1 click Odin, DO NOT TRY TO FLASH YOUR GB BACKUP FROM ICS RECOVERY. ALWAYS ODIN. I usually go back to el29 to upgrade ics versions, it insures a clean install. Good luck! Gps and exchange have been working, if they don't you probably did something wrong.

I've been using Goodness since version 1. It is 100% a daily driver!
1) Yes it really is as easy as all that. I'd follow the instructions in the OP just to make sure you get it right but yeah, piece of cake.
2) Exchange works, most of the time. I know there have been a few releases where it hasn't but Mijjah is super responsive and gets it fixed extremely quickly.
3) GPS had some issues in the beginning but I've not had any issues. I got lost downtown yesterday and pulled it out, got a lock in five seconds and it got me right where I needed to be.
Long story short? Just do it! It's the best ROM out there! Team Nocturnal kicks butt and if you have questions hope on their thread and you'll get an answer super fast. Everyone there is super helpful and friendly.
Enjoy your new ROM!
GPS is either completely random or people are having alot more trouble than they should be.
FC07+ for me GPS has worked out of the box everytime.

Team-Nocturnal Blended ICS
I have been running the blend roms since fc07 every update and I am like you i use my phone everyday for work and i was worried. One night i sat and read every post in the forum for the blend ics rom and decided to do it. Fc07 was a lil buggy so i flashed back to el29 for a about a day then decided to try it again. Second go round everything worked except gps i used the work around that they tell u to use and i havent had trouble since. The only other bug was apex launcher if u tryed to dl it from the market and use it it would fc every now and again and that was on fc18. Other than those two small issues everything else has been awesome.
DOHCHP sent from ICS Epic Touch
It seems like the GPS bug is gone with FC22. Is that correct? How about battery life?

GPS does appear to be fixed. Battery life seems to vary depending on your phone and your setup but I myself am averaging between 10 and 12 hours. I saw a post yesterday where somebody had 24+ hours!
I'm running 2.3 right now and am wanting to flash the newest version. Can I do this from the current recovery or do I need to go back to GB? What is the best process to do this? Noob here haha
Do not flash roms from an ics recovery. Always odin to el29 with CWM then flash ics through CWM

The thread for the ROM says you can do it with just the Calk wipe zip and a few other things Besides, what does Odin to el29 mean? Told you I was a noob.

Should I ICS yet? is it safely done yet? worth it?

i'm rocking callulins e4gt 2.9.2 ...
i mean... its good. But i (obviously) want ICS
I've tried using Rom Manager to put the ICS blend on my 4g Touch, it just hasn't worked (i'm assuming that prog is made for the google phones like nexus s.... i think this because it worked great on my nexus s). when i attempt to install, it gets aborted and i have to restore from a backup. I'm wondering if i'm just not going to the right place in clockwork recovery (team rogue, i have avoided touch because it has a brick stigma)
i rooted my nexus S inside out, custom rome out the wing wang, but the epic has proven more difficult. like... get root was cake, but everything after that has proven more complicated. thats why i want some professional opinions. is ICS worth it at this point and can i do it easily?
I personally love ICS and had issues at first. but i been using VeNuM's new rom AnaKonda that just released. So far 24 hours and im loving every minute of it and no major issues. People are saying theres bluetooth issues with the new modem tho but have not had this issue yet.
worse comes to worse just Odin back down to EL29 or something like that.
i'm thinking odin is the better way to do this when i do it.
also, has wireless hotspot functioned well for you?
questions should go in the "Q & A" thread........just saying

You do know that Rom Manager can be a brick stigma as well.. I know you may want to get ICS but if you are using Rom Manager one that scares me and tells me your knowledge of flashing may be more on the noob side. If not, I apologize but also if you have read any bricking or rom installing posts in this forum nowhere do you see to use Rom Manager.
Flashing an ICS rom is as easy as the OP says is it. Odin it if you prefer or flash it but please follow the OP's direction and honestly get rid of Rom Manager and learn how to get into recovery, bootloader or flash a rom the good old fashioned way. It may help you out in the long run
Odin back to stock rooted EL29 and then use Calk's full wipe. Flash ICS rom and you're good to go. I'm loving it and the bugs are so few, I can live. You learn to manually manipulate the notification bug. I have had insane battery now that it's settled in. I'm on agat63's tFD02. Even using inverted apps for more battery savings.
it works great but you have to remember its not a final version. still has a few bugs. but worth it for me i love ICS

OT--Hey playya, haven't seen you around Xoom...we're on ICS 4.0.4 now. Come and play.
On topic...ICS is awesome on the E4GT! Huge leap IMHO.
I'm on CM9 alpha 2 and it's awesome. It just feels much smoother than gingerbread and much cleaner looking than TWiz. I definitely recommend trying it out, I can't go back to the gingerbread now that I've had some ICS.
Ics safe? Id wait for jelly bean coming out soon.. Ics borked my windows computer! If this is any help to you then id suggest staying away from ics.. .. Or read some of the ics threads and stop being lazy
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Yea just read the post or look at qbkings review videos they are stable and very good just wait for sfhub to use one click root for fd02
Ics is worth it since using i can't see myself going back to gbroms... Just follow the op instructions on how to install the rom that you choose many issues have been cause of user error
I'm using blend ics 3.2 working good.. Before that i was using blend gb rom
Also you should try flashing with cwm or rogue recovery instead of rom manager.. Its ver easy.
Rogue recover but not the touch screen version
Just do a nAndroid backup first in recovery then wipe everything then use calks wipe everything zip
Then flash rom reboot and let it settle for about 10 minutes before you do anything then do a reboot and your good . Havent had issues

i would put myself slightly past noob, but not that much.
Rom manager was great for the nexus... ass for the epic touch.
to clarify, i'm on team rogue CWM and calk. 2.9.2. ; GO launcher.
had several versions of ICS on my nexus... i like the feel of it but every build had its little issues. and the nexus S is just too little. i'm a whore for a glorious, sexy big screen.
i think my biggest problem is i'm not used to the EPIC set up, mem card, usb card, internal. its a mess when i'm trying to get through the rogue menus.
I had epic for 4 months now but never even tried to flash ics yet.As far as i see ics still has some lag even on nexus and probably is a resources hog,i could be wrong but from what i learned ics is like vista and gb is xp.
Plus extra steps needed just to flash it without bricking, once real and stable ics cwm comes out and samsung releases ics ota then i will give it a try because i dont think its as smooth, lag free and stable as my Blazer 4.0 or even gb miui yet.It took many updates even for gb to be as stable as it is now.
well... you make a good point. i just... get the itch. new is always sexy and better in my eyes.
and if the mods want to lock this or move, thats fine, poster was right, this should be Q & A ... but whatev's.. i think its relevant conversation.
just installed the blend after backing up my 2.9.2 GB....
ICS is so sexy. i missed the visuals. I will keep a mental note of the snags, but right now, the ics blue and this big sexy screen were just meant for each other.... so good even the iPeople could be jealous.
quick point, as if i have any, i'm a Mac user, but i boot into Win 7 for anything android. i didn't use Odin, i just put the zip on my sd card, but just... always use windows. whenever i use OSX, things get pointlessly complacated... things just dont work right. Windows? no prob.
so bootcamp it boys!
Seriously CM9 is the best ROM for this phone! I hate TouchWiz with a passion. This is how Android SHOULD be! I haven't had any issues with Alpha2, I consider it stable. Once you go CM, you never go back.

GB is butter compared to ics at least till we get an official release. ICS still has a lot of lagginess scrolling thru screens and app drawer, dont experience any lag on GB roms. I will admit ics roms are improving and very fun to play around on.

Brand new SGS S II. Where do i start?

As the title states today i got my sgs s II. impressed with it so far but i want to start flashing new roms. Came from the sgs 4g i am familiar with cwm, odin and superoneclick but looking at roms here i see that there are ICS roms that have special requirements as to flashing (read the megamix install instructions) and i don't want to brick or otherwise mess this phone up. if anyone can guide in the right direction where to start and the differences in the roms on this forum id really appreciate it.
The ICS ROM's are not completely stable yet, they are based off the Skyrocket ICS leak. But it's the same as your old phone, Odin CWM then flash a rom. No need to root if you're going to flash a custom rom, they are already rooted. The only requirement for ICS is flashing the super wipe zip from the dev section before flashing the rom. Just make sure you follow instructions in the OP word for word, and you will be fine. But READ READ READ 3x before jumping in.

It's hard to brick. Use Odin, flash something with root, and use CWM beyond that. Generally, ROM features are listed in the threads where they're posted. You might start out by reading through some threads.
thx for the info i was a little confused about the ics was looking thru and the tuesday rom looks very nice. again thank you for the info and for putting up with a noob.
I agree with what everyone has said.
For what it's worth:
Eugene's Macnut is my daily driver. I try them all, and I am always going back to it. Fantastic battery life, great performance, and everything just works. The custom driver is fantastic--already highly undervolted.
If you don't care about wi-fi calling, his CM7 is fantastic.
If you want ICS, they are all basically the same right now, with a few tweaks / mods / themeing here or there.
Yaldak's vanilla update will be the next ICS that I try (none are quite stable enough for me yet...and no wifi calling) whenever he releases it.
Also--if you haven't already, just CWM via Odin, and you can be done. I never even booted into the stock version when I got the phone.
any working links for the cwm? looking thru posts cant find one that will open.

I recently rooted and started flashing my GS2 as well as my GF's G2x. For the GS2, I've tried Tuesday's BluRay. It's really nice..very fast and smooth, great looking themes for it too, but I found it was a bit too limited, and eventually had to load another launcher and reconfigure some of the sounds. I also really missed the time on the status bar (M&S has since put out a patch that added the clock to one of the themes, unfortunately it wasn't the theme I preferred). I ran with that for a couple days and have since flashed Foxstar. I really like Foxstar's included utilities and tools, but it was a bit laggy coming out of the lockscreen and scrolling through pages. I've read that loading faux's kernel over the included synergy helps a lot. Will probably do that in a bit and run with foxstar for a few days to test out performance and battery life. But I'm getting itchy fingers and might try one of the CM7 ROMs or Juggernaut soon. I'm making Nandroids of each install I've done (as well as the stock), and eventually I'll pick one to run as a daily driver.
I recommend Eugene's next CM7 update the R3. I've been running with it since R1 and it's superb.
With the massive customizations it's hard to go back to GB or the alpha like ICS's out there. Although the latter have great qualities.
does the cm7 have the tv out function via the mhl cable?
Since you're new here. The few times a gs2 was bricked is because of:
1. flash a rom different galaxy s2 rom as in the international, the att, sprint, old vibrant. We can flash the skyrocket roms though.
2. Using odin to flash a stock rom incorrectly. i.e. using a pit file, battery falls out etc
3. the Phone just DIES OUT. Believe it or not, some people's phone just shuts off and won't turn on again.
But other than that, our phone is pretty hard to brick if you're not stupid.
T989 is a beast and is very hard to brick if you have a lil bit of root knowledge...everything ive learned has been thru google , trial and error and the bad ass devs here at xda..if u search for it you will find the answers to all your questions

[Q] EL29 and Updating

I'm currently running GB El29 and am looking to update. I've done a lot of reading around the forum, the wiki, and a few other websites, and I'd just like a little bit of clarification. I figure I'd ask now, before doing anything, as opposed to asking later, after something's gone wrong.
Looking at the Wiki, I was considering updating to Calkulin's E4GT 2 v1.6, or unrooting and then waiting for the Official ICS update (it was rerolled today, apparently.) Or, to Blazer, but I'm not sure if going to the ICS version or GB version is best.
My question - The process to update - Nandroid, Flash Format All, Flash Rom, Success? I've noticed a lot of installs say to "Wipe All", and I assume that's what Flashing Format All does, correct? I just don't want to mess up - I had no problems rooting, following that guide I mentioned, and I've done a lot of reading...I just want to confirm before doing anything. I mean, I know, wipe delvic and clear cache, but Format All does that, correct?
I rooted my phone using "How to Root Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch! [NEW][SPH-D710]" rom Epic4gtouchroot.com. I'd post a link, but I've fewer than 10 posts. All I've done, outside of root, is install the Beats sound files. That's really it.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Read this 10 times over then you should be fine.

If you are interested in certin roms read threw the rom post to see if people have already answerd the questions you seek. Some devs request you flash different ways so read the OP in the post of the roms you are considering

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of going with. I've read over his topic several times, and even though I'm really not a fan of the transparent notification tray, most of the included mods sound really, really useful. Thanks for the heads up.
And thank you too, jugaloo. I actually have that page bookmarked on my phone lol. I've already made several nandroid backups - I plan on making a titanium backup in a moment. My only concern now is th process from going from El29 GB to E4GT 3. Rereading that thread several times has me wondering - I download the ROM, place it on the SD, boot into recovery, clear delvic and cache, run Format all, then install the ROM, correct? I already have a nandroid backup, so in case anything here goes wrong, I can just flash the backup back on, correct?

I just run the format x2 script made by ruj in the blu kuban thread. Then i follow the devs op to install. From what i see you have your feet planted and ur about to make that plunge. Id take the next step and try the flash. Id go with a different rom the the fe22 is out of date and calk has moved on. Try blu kubans rom its super stable and ita built from source. I myself like gb better.

I was thinking that - Calk's topic was updated in May, while blukuban was updated in February. I mean, I can always try both, right? I'd like to go with Calk's first, then try blukuban, only because BK is heavily themed. But either way, thanks!
Edit
I didn't realize the blukuban thread had updates outside of the OP. It was very recently updated. I might check that one out first.
Yes the blu kuban ics is always up todate and he is there for the people. If you want ics builds that are more stockish id aokp they have theming going on but is nice and stable. Read all of the op and there sites for correct install. Cm9 alpha 6 is also really good. Blazers rom is also really good. Those are all stockish built from source. For gb roms id go with either calks 3.0 or UnOfifcials ics gb rom. For me gb gives me most bang for battery and bandwith. Those last two roms are highly recomended. Calks is super fast stock with options for themes. Unofficial gb ics is themed lightly and is very good for battery and the animations are nice

Alright, awesome. Waiting for my battery to finish charging (my phone reset while performing a titanium backup, and the battery life dropped from 44 to 9, so I'm getting it back up to at least 50.)
So just to recap
-
To Install
Boot to recovery
Make a NAND Backup
Wipe Phone (Format All/wipe delvic/wipe cache)
Install ROM
Right? That's what Blukuban's install requires, and Calk's doesn't have any special instructions, outside of " a wipe is recommended BEFORE flashing if coming from another ROM", which is what the Format All is for, correct?
You've been insanely helpful. Thank you so much! I'm also looking into UnOfficial (it's not on the Wiki, so I didn't really know about it until you mentioned it.

Charge the bartery more. Use a wipe script dont touch the fomat that is built into the cwm while flashing a ics rom. If you use the wipe x2 script found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25448865
U should be good. It wipes everythings even both of the caches twice. If you already have a newer nandroid id just go with that instead of making a new one everytime you flash. If possible download the roms to pc check the md5 check sums make sure they match. If they match transfer to the phone. When downloading to the phone it has a higher chance of a bad download. I try and flash at 75% battery incase of error and you have to restore a previous nandroid. If you want read this post about the eMMc bug. Most roms are safe now but some are not current.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644364
Not trying to scare you with that last link you should know about it before hand so you know the dangers of flashing a non safe ics roms. If you have any more queations shoot. But i think your good to go
UnOfficial
One more thing. Qbking27 has install video guides for 90% of the roms in the threads of the rom. Id watch those before installing that rom you want. Some times they are buried in the op. You can use them as a step by step as you install. Best if luck to you and i want a report once you get your new custom rom on your phone.

You got it!
I'm doing a GB build - from what I've come across, GB just gets better battery life, and I just feel more comfortable using it. At least, until the official ICS rolls out from Samsung. If that one is well received, and it's worth it, I'll unroot/wipe fresh and try it out.
That being said though, I'll use x2 then. Will it matter if I do both, just for good, measure? (Both x2 and FormatAll)
And yes, I'll be downloading to PC first, then transferring. I feel more comfortable doing it that way. I'll be doing Calk's 3.0 first, and if I don't like it, I'll try either Unofficial or BluKuban.
And once it's done charging more, and I perform the install, I'll report back, with a screenshot or two as well.

Just use the wipe x2 that does everything you need. Blu kubans gb rom is good but wifi is whacky. Id go with his ics build. Well your set good luck!

Alright so, I installed it, and all is working well. It's actually a bit...erm, slow? Whenever I swipe from screen to screen on the homepage it's a bit laggish. But it works! I'll run around with it for a little while and see how it works. I'm in the process of reinstalling my older apps, updating my contacts and such.
Thanks for all of your help!
Edit
A little worried, to be honest. Some of the apps I'm trying to install is giving me the "Package file is invalid" error off of the Google Market. Dropbox, Amazon, etc. Not sure what to make of it, to be honest.
Try and clear the cache for the market. If your using tb try to unmount the sd card if that dont work do fresh installs off the market place . Also go into recovery and clear the cache and dalvik.

Done. I cleared both caches, and so far, all of the problems I've had with the market is gone. (Dropbox didn't install on the first try, but it did after the second.)
I've replaced the default touchwiz interface with Launcher Pro (TW was running wicked slow - loads of lag with just basic scrolling) and it seems to be running well. And it's definitely saving on battery life.)
That being said, it's not really my cup of tea. I restored my contacts and such, but eh. I think I'll try UnOfficial, and if it's not better, either go back to el29 or update to official ics.
I'll likely keep this one until tomorrow. You've been such a huge help. Thank you so much.
Actually, with launcher pro replacing it, this is pretty good. I want to mess with it more. I'll run it for a few days and see how it fairs.
Ok wait before everyone leaves, Ive got some questions too!
I just got my replacement(after a hard brick trying JB) and figure Id ask my questions in this thread rather than starting a new one..
1. Ive decided to odin EL29 EVERY TIME I want to flash a new rom, just to be safe. If I use CMW with EL29 and decide to try out CM9, Do I always need to flash a aokp kernel? Or is that built into the CM9 install?
2. If I like CM9, and want to make a nandroid backup of it, do I need to Odin back to EL29 first to back it up? Or is it safe to do it with the recovery that comes with CM9?
3. If the answer to #2 is yes, meaning I do have to odin back to EL29, how do I restore my backup? Let me explain:
Lets say I flash CM9, make a nandroid of CM9, then decide to try out say a different rom, like a TW rom. Then I hate the TW rom and wanna restore my backup of CM9. Do I need to ODIN back to EL29 to restore the nandroid? I read in the "how not to brick my..." thread its bad to restore a ICS rom from a GB Kernel. Can someone please explain?
Ive really, really tried to search and read as much as possible before asking, but a lot of the threads are old and have contradicting information. Sorry for being so noobish, but I dont wanna brick my new phone. I come from Evo, Evo3d, Hp Touchpad, etc, where there arent as many issues to flash customs roms. Ive rooted and flashed custom roms ever since the PPC6600, 100's of times and NEVER had a problem. Sorry, this just really confuses me for some reason!!!
Can't help you with CM9 or AOKP because I've never tried either one. The OP was talking about launcher pro. I highly recommend Nova launcher or Apex. They are both specifically built for ICS and look and act like stock android with great customization features.
Was going to make another topic, but I thought I'd ask here first
- The notification tray in this rom (Calk 3.0) is transparent, and I'm not fond of the icons in the Notification Tray. I tried using Rom Tool Box lite to change it, but the tray won't change, no matter what I do. Does anyone know how to fix this? I've tried before - it just won't change.

I don't mess with rom tool box. I hear good and bad things about it. If you start at page 1080 and read to the end people post new system ui's but it may theme it a little bit. They have blazers UI in there and one other one I think. I'm not sure it is transparent or not. Or even make a post in the thread about it. I know its still active and you may find your answer. Sorry I can't really help you on this.

Some Questions from a Newbie :D :D

Hey Guyz am new here ,
coming from S1 i500, i have noticed its not as easy flashing and rooting this phone as was with i500.
So decided to make a small query bunch for you knowledgeable guyz. Hope I will be helped as i was helped and properly tutored there at i500 Fassy forums.
1.. what is this ODIN count , every one talks about , how it happens and ways to reset or avoid it ( lol for the first time i laughed at this but meh, its there )
2.. what is this yellow triangle thingy , over at fascinate forums , yellow triangle meant Download mode and thats it , but here it seems its something EVIL
3.. Why there is such a BIG BRICK BUG in E4GT , which comes into play while factory rest or data wipe ? and especially in ICS,
4.. Currently i am on FI03 stock rooted , want to flash a CWM recovery thru which i can freely change ICS ROMS , how can i do that
and whats the exact procedure to flash newer roms ,
what i know is just wipe all three and flash
5.. whats the safest way to go from ICS to GB ( stock rooted ) - are those One click files by the ULTIMATE ACE sfhub can be flashed on any setup irrespective of ICS or GB or even JB ??
6.. which are the safest possible recoveries available for
GB
ICS
JB
and how to flash them on respective setups
7.. for a great user experience and battery backup
which custom ROMS are suggested for
GB
ICS
JB ( i know )
and whats the best way to install aka flash them.
I know its kinna too much , and might turn a lot of you off , but would appreciate the help coz really me having enough know how about fassy , feel out of sorts with E4GT , then what was going thru the minds of total newbies.
Thankies

I might be able to answer them all, as I'm not as knowledgeable in this area as other, but I've learned from the best here so ill answer what I can to help and pass on the knowledge I have!
1: it occurs when a non-Samsung kernel is flashed through Odin. You can avoid it by using Mobile Odin or the autoroot package to flash a recovery, or use one of the Odin Ome-clicks.
2: i cant remember exactly, but i believe the yellow triangle appears when the odin count goes up. Again, avoidable through Mobile Odin and Odin One-clicks.
3: I believe the brick bug is kernel related. That's avoidable by using a safe recovery. You can find out of its safe by either asking around if it's not posted that it is, or by reading the OP.
4: I can't help you with a custom recovery for that build. I never went to it. The last build I was on was the leaked version of FF18. But yes, standard procedure is wipe all three then flash rom and gapps if needed. But always check the OP first.
5: sfhubs Odin One-clicks are the best thing you could ever use. Ever. Yes, they can be flashed regardless of what version you're on. In fact I believe that's standard procedure for downgrading.
6: for GB and ICS recoveries, use the autoroot package that's should be stickied in one of these sub forums. For JB, it's automatically packaged in the JB rom you flash. It's CWM6.
7: this changes with every person you ask. Here's my favorite on each of the three:
GB: definitely sfhubs Tweaked stock roms. They're smooth and fast. Run without problems unless you cause one.
ICS: I would say either AOKP or CM9. AOKP no longer has a device for our device though. He dropped it to do an AOSP ICS rom.
JB: definitely CM10. I've hardly had any issues with it. Although I have high hopes for AOKP JB that's in development right now. Once it's major bugs get worked out, since it's brand new right now, that will be my daily driver.
And to anyone more knowledgeable on this than me, if I'm wrong on any of these please correct me.

Thanks a lot EggosEvo
now all i need is someone directing me to a safe recovery and its flashing method so that i can try out either Calk's ICS ROM or some other stable yet awesome ROM.
One important thing that i have noticed
I may be doing something wrong , but in comparasion why di i feel that Fascinate's camera is way way better as compared to E4GT
the INDOOR pictures with E4GT are darker and with some darker hues on colors too whereas with my 1.5 yrs old fascinate the INDOOR snaps are pretty well lit and clear with good natural colors

What I would do is Odin One Click to FF18, then use the Autoroot package(should be stickied in the dev section) to flash Agat's source-built recovery. That's just the easiest way I know how to do, as I don't know how if there are any custom recoveries for FI03. Plus its a safe way to go. You could always search the forums for an FI03 based recovery if you don't want to go to a build that was released quite a bit ago.
Thanks a bunch mate.
Actually just five minutes before you replied, I took the plunge and used mobile odin to flash agat's latest fi03 kernel and clock work mod.
So now I have a custom recovery as well.
Also I am sure now there us no issue wiping data via recovery to flash other roms

this might as well help other newbies who keep searching pages after pages on various threads for some smallish thing.
