Help diagnosing poor battery performance - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi all,
I've had for the past couple of months some pretty dire battery life on my phone and I'm unsure as to what exactly it is thats causing it.
A couple of months ago I was on the Modaco custom ROM, i think it was version ir8, and I was able to use my phone lightly during the day from 7am every now and then, and by the end of the day say around 10pm id still have at least 60% left. At the time the longest i went without a charge was about 2 days and maybe 4-6 hours. I can't remember exactly.
Anyway, I updated the rom a couple of times, and things have never been the same. I tried reverting to the older version but things were still bad. I also tried a different rom (AOKP) which im still on now, but still things are not right.
Right now after ~14 hours on battery I have 45% left, and this is actually a good day...usually with similar use id be lucky to have 20% remaining by now. I'm unable to post images it seems. I wanted to post an image showing 63% battery, 9 hours 49 mins. Android OS > 28%, screen > 26%, phone idle > 17%, mobile stand by > 12 %, maps > 5%, wifi > 3%
Up until I noticed my battery life going down the drain I never noticed the android os using up much battery, but maybe I just wasn't looking for anything. It doesnt seem right to me however....
What steps can I take to properly figure out where the problem lies?
For reference I'm on the AOKP ROM build 40, and franco kernel milestone 4 on GSM Galaxy Nexus. Any other info needed?

Calibrate the battery. Charge full. Pull charger. Turn off. Plug back in. Charge full. Pull battery about 30 seconds. Pop back in. Turn on. And see what happens.
butter and jelly please...

You could try something like CPUSpy from the market and see what is keeping your system awake and active. Or Watchdog
Edit: I actually stopped using Watchdog because it ate more battery than what it s service was worth.

I tried calibrating as mentioned which didn't seem to do anything.
Tried CPU spy and nothing seemed odd. Most of the time was spent in the lowest frequency or in deep sleep.
I've just installed the MCR jelly bean ROM last night. And I've instantly noticed massively improved battery life, however I haven't fully restored all my apps and data yet, so I'm slightly dubious as to whether this will remain.
If once I restore all the apps and data I get battery issues again, is there anything else I could do to try and find out the route cause?
Would a log cat help?
Thanks

search the forum for betterbatterystats, if this is an app issue, then bbs will find out which app is behaving weird

[SOLVED][Q] Battery issues?

Wondering if anyone else has had any battery issues? I went to sleep last night with about 85% or more battery, and 5.5 hours later my phone was dead....when i plugged it in for like 5 minutes to call my work and tell them i was going to be late...when i got to work my phone said 45% phone idle and 45% cell standby for battery use
none here - took phone off charger about midnight, this morning after alarm rang for the full 10 minutes, it still showed 100%
i've been watching it and am really impressed with battery life - is it possible you've got a program running in the background? - i had Startup Auditor to stop apps in the background but had that from before, on my Vibrant
on the vibrant, running a predominantly black wallpaper, screen brightness at 13%, putting phone in "airplane mode" when i sleep, keeping GPS off, data sync off etc, it'd be down to 17-22% at end of day before going back on charger
this G2, running live wallpaper (thunderstorm), no efficiency moves (ie GPS off, etc), screen brightness at 50%, phone still had 34% last night before going back on the charger - and the battery has not "conditioned" - i noticed on the past 2 phones batteries life got better after the first few weeks of use.
Nothing different than my nexus...and i was thinking maybe it was a game but that should have been killed automatically and i dont think it would say phone standby and cell idle if it was an app would it?
tonite you might try putting the phone in airplane mode when you go to bed, and turn off GPS
see what happens to battery drain overnite - if it diminishes then i'd look at what apps you've installed. there was an article on engadget not too long ago that some researchers had analyzed the 358 most popular apps, and found 30 were reporting data to their "mothership" that had not declared it or asked for permission to report data.
hope that helps
well another weird thing is, that when i bought the phone and brought it home, usually it comes with half battery and thats what it showed but i had to charge it quick with no apps really installed on it yet...Im charging now and will test to see what happens with battery...i just removed off alot of my apps.... to see whats up
I'm getting about 10 hours with regular usage though I wish I knew why Photobucket keeps starting everytime i kill it.
I hope you guys charged the phone fully before you used it first. That can play a big role in battery life.
I got my phone yesterday and haven't done any calibrations yet. I've been playing with it like you normally would if you buy a new smartphone. I took it off the charger around 9pm last night and at 7:32am right now I have about 60% left. So roughly 10.5 hours later and I've only lost about 40%. I'm very impressed by that. My vibrant would have been dead by now, it rarely lasts through the night if its not on the charger.

What's your time with out signal, sounds like the 50% bug to me, google the airplane mode fix, if not you might want to look into a new radio, and you should allways recal your battery after you flash

what do you mean time without signal? and cant flash the build or radio without root(if thats what you meant) im fully charging it now and removed all of my apps...and going to see what happens from there
I've been using mine off and on mostly text, web and speedtests for 4 hours off the charger and my battery is at 91%

This battery life isn't normal right? Bad drain

I cant tell if it's always been like this. Or if this actually isn't normal because I'm always concern with battery life. Im a very heavy user in the sense my phone will be on and im texting, xda, social apps i.e google +, email check every hr, and twitter.
However, i started feeling like my battery has been draining alot faster when the screen is on. I have no problem with the phone sleeping. I was experience this on Calk rom and now acs ics rom. I literally can look at my battery percentage drop 10% in like a half hour. Is this normal if screen is on the whole time? I've used better battery stats and system panel I can't find anything causing the drain. I see the suspend and events but doesn't that effect the phone sleeping?

Are you on the new modem? Looks like you have weak a signal. EG31 might help a little if your not on it already. I used the full EG31 tar right when it dropped and have been getting great battery life (it may be to early but so far so good)

not sure if its going to work but hoping it does thanks for the response still
turn your display down to under 50% you won't see a difference except outside in daylight and kill this app every time you reboot the phone hit Settings>Applications>Running services then hit DRM content > stop > ok
I get over a day on one charge.

Ok ill try the drm content stop..however my display brightness is already down at like 10%.
Also, kill the Social Hub as well, that drains the battery significantly.
You might try one of several roms available in dev. They address most of the aforementioned issues.

The biggest battery drain reason is the location by wireless network option. Make sure its unchecked. Ever since I did that, my battery life has been awesome. I get to keep my brightness high, Bluetooth on, etc...

All the basics (brightness and all that stuff) on top of the stuff you have running. The darn task killer/manager I see in the icon top left of your screenshot is a HOG on resources check the caching... You can literally **** with these phones for half a day to set it up the right way to conserve. I think wireless is hogging too but I am talking primarily about the first part of your rapid loss, the left part of the graph so to speak.
JC
I purchased an extended battery and was still getting crappy battery life. SpareParts always FC'd on me... but last night I found Badass Battery Monitor in the market and in my opinion it's even better than SpareParts!
It helped me find that the Hotmail app was keeping my phone awake for almost an hour every day even though I had it set to download email only once a day. Removed that right away.
Plus it gives a great % readout in notification of the battery level. I think it's a fairly new app, but it really is worth checking out especially if you're having battery drain problems.
Just killing Social Hub has increased my battery life significantly. I'm at 11 hours now on battery, with 62% left. This is from last night when I unplugged the phone at 100%.

I'm on the Sydnicate Rom there isn't even no social hubb app. He has alot of the mods like noCiq and everything. My phone sleeps well its just when I start using it I can see it basically draining like 10% every half hour. I'm a heavy user I know my phone will drain fast while I'm on it I just would expect it to last 8-10 hours on heavy use.
Right NOW:
I'm at 4 hours 12 mins 22 secs at 37% left.
Display Time is 50% 2 hrs 41 mins 51s (Brightness is set all the way down)
Android OS 10%
So I'm assuming in 2 more hours my phone will die. If this is just normal for a heavy user then I guess I have to deal with it?
I was very disappointed with my Epic Touch when I first got it. I was getting a dead battery in about 6 to 8 hours no matter what I did or did not do.
Calibrating the battery seems to have fixed it.
I'm at 73% battery with 8:32 hours up time and I've made about 12 calls ranging from 2 to 10 minutes.
I've also checked voice mails, emails and other stuff.
I just charged the battery til it was full, plugged and repeated until it stayed at 10%, popped into CWM5 and cleared the battery data and then used Battery Calibration from the market (free) and it's like a got a battery upgrade!
As far as wake lock issues, I've not having any of those. I took my charger off the phone around 3:30am this morning (100% charge) and when I left for work at 6:50am, I had 98% battery still.
When I got to work it was down to 96%, I checked my email on the drive there.
I'm trying this out, wish me luck.
There doesn't seem to be any possible way to charge my battery to 100%, unplug it and not have it immediately drop to 99%.

If those screens are both from the same charge, I see nothing wrong with your phone.
you have 17% left, and you have 2.5 hours of screen on time. So you're on target to get just over 3 hours of on screeen time which is completely in the norm for these phones. AND you're over 12 hours. I don't understand what else you could ask for?
People get all caught up on total charge time, but, to be honest, it's completely IRRELEVENT.
If I dont use my phone I'll get easily over 48 hours out of the phone... Screen on time is what matters. And from a full charge, if I were to use my phone for 4 straight hours without stopping, it would be about dead. When the screen is on, you're using the phone, and the display is the biggest battery suck out there. When I do all the tricks to conserve battery, and I set it up right, I get 4 hours screen on time, which is pretty incredible with these phones.
Now, If you WANT to get better then you have right now, a few things are coming into play.
1) Your signal is weak, this will suck power no matter what more then it should, so get better signal if you want some more time out of your phone.
2) If you installed a new rom, and you didn't calibrate your battery properly, you're losing battery life.
to calibrate properly:
a) download battery callibration app from market
b) charge to 100%
c) unplug battery charger and REPLUG IN and wait for 100%
d) repeat step c a couple times
e) while plugged in hit the calibrate battery button in the app
f) unplug phone and use til dead and recharge
This will yeild you the best battery life.
3) De-Theme. Although I use a theme, every theme I've tested, for one reason or another, drains my battery faster then running the stock phone theme.
4) If you haven't done the basic battery saving things, you should do them to help yourself out. Here's a few I use.
a) Turn off background data, you only need it on to use market
b) Turn off, or set sync for all email and social apps at as long intervals as possible
c) dont use any widgets
d) download watchdog lite so you can see when apps are acting up and using extra battery
e) when you're done using your phone, open task manager, kill all apps, and clear memory
f) always leave the brightness off automatic and as low as possible
g) download SETCPU and run your phone at 800mhz, and undervolt as much as possible (50mv most all phone can take)
h) use black or dark wallpapers, on LED screens back means the pixel is off which uses less battery
G will be your biggest battery save. I've also tried using the SUPERFREEZE thing in the dev section and, besides in sleep mode, I saw no adverse effect. If you wanna kill socialhub, fine, but I dont see any noticable difference on my phone with it off.
If you do all these I promise you'll get better battery life.
Wow, I did a proper calibration today and I'm getting great results already. I've calibrated before but I never had cleared stats in CWM or did the unplug then replug charging thing.
Anyways, I after 12 hours I'm still at 35%! The longest I've ever gone before is 12.5 hours. Screen on time = 1 hour 30 min, but some of that was a battery intensive game (puzzle quest 2). Also i'm running calk's rom, so i'm sure that helped.
Thanks kdoggy, i didn't expect to see results this great.
Those are good tips too Jermzz, thanks!

What is your idle battery life and setup with JB?

I'm noticing my idle battery drain on JB is slightly higher (but not significantly so) than it was on ICS. What is your idle battery drain % per hour on JB, and with what setup (ROM, kernel, # accounts syncing, etc.). Could this be entirely due to the "update location" checkbox in Maps (possibly for Google Now)? Any other potential causes?
The first night with Jelly Bean my phone went dead overnight (from about 51%), so I went through my settings and found that it was Google Now and/or the location updating in Maps. Probably contingent on one another. I turned Google Now off and unchecked the "Update Location" settings and the second night it only lost 4% battery in 9 hours.
Note: I also had GPS turned off during that first night so I don't know if that caused higher drain but I'm going to wait to see if it will be addressed in a future OTA before using it again.
I am actually conducting a bit of an experiment to find out more about the battery drain. Im in school so my phone spends a great deal of time on idle as I work. Yesterday I got about 22hrs of battery life with 2 hours of on screen time and some light web browsing, only sync accounts is Google. That was with stock Kernel and BAMF's JB build. This was about the same, maybe even better than my stock ICS 4.0.4. However I flashed James Bond kernel (3.1.9.9) and was pulling 1day 15hrs average with the same kind of usage (maybe enven a little heavier, didnt take screenshots unfortunately). Currently I have Franco kernel (r220 384gpu) loaded and overnight with 4g left on for 8 hours I dropped maybe 5% max.
I have no reason to go back to ICS so I wont do more testing on that front but I plan to try some kernels on the rom I am currently using.
For last night only 3% for 10 hours with wifi is on.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
So idle drain used to about half a percent per hour, today during work it has been 1%+. I noticed the "Keep awake" time under Android OS is over 2 hours even though screen on time is only 40 minutes. This is likely the problem right? I heard about possible issues with Light Flow on JB but I'm not sure if that would show up under Light Flow usage or Android OS. What are some other possible causes for the keep awake time here? Specifically related to Jelly Bean.
My battery drain has remained constant over the upgrade, I am getting about 2 days of battery life on idle, about 1 day on heavy usage.
Anybody else? My idle drain is now consistently at least 1%/hr or slightly more, whereas it used to be half percent/hr. I'd like to know what is causing this increase. Should I turn off Google Now? Are there apps I should try that will tell me? My Android OS keep awake time is still almost 4 times what my screen on time is...I don't think that was the case on ICS. What are other people's keep awake vs. screen on time?
Currently I have about 1hr 10min screen time and OS keep awake time of 7hr 33min. Total time on battery is 1day 2 hours and I still have 35% It seems that the kernel included with the Vicious build does not fit with my usage habbits and will be loading the James Bond or Franco kernel I had before. I feel like they had better deep sleep and governor management for my usage.
My current usage and stat on stock: 1d 16h 30m, 48% bat, 1h58m on screen with wifi is on. it's amazing
Ok, so yesterday I installed BetterBatteryStats. My phoned was unplugged for about 17 1/2 hours, screen on time less than an hour, and the Android OS "Keep awake" time was 15 hours and BBS showed Awake time as the entire 17 1/2 hours, and no deep sleep at all. However, I checked the various other things (wakelocks, processes, etc.) and even the highest item on each list didn't show more time than 10-15 minutes.
So I rebooted, checked several hours later, and it was in deep sleep for 90% of the time. That's good to see, but the issue is the no deep sleep thing keeps happening.
What can I do at this point to figure out exactly what app or process is preventing deep sleep? I've searched around and haven't seen many suggestions beyond BetterBatteryStats, which isn't showing me any major offenders.

I was thinking the same thing as you just as I was getting ready to charge my phone and wondering why Phone Idle + Maps were a third of my usage. I had 131 hours (32% remaining) on battery with 30% idle and 3% Maps, 33% screen with 2 hours 27 minutes on, 2.5 hours awake. I didn't start noticing this change until the last Maps update and turning on Google Now location stuff. Better Battery Stats also showed an awful lot of wake-ups each time I went to look before charging.
I also didn't notice this problem with 4.0.2 before I made the jump to 4.1.1 so it will be interesting to see if our increase in idle/Maps consumption is because of our Google Apps wanting to know where we are and if other users notice the same thing when they get upgrades - be it community or carrier based.

[Q] battery life suddenly horrendous

My battery life suddenly became horrible this morning. Normally I unplug my phone every morning around 6AM, and i dont need to charge it again until closer to 9PM.
This morning, I realized that despite being on a full charge at 6AM as usual, my battery was completely depleted by 10. I checked the battery "app" and it said that phone idle and cell standby were both at 13% usage, and that was the most i had used my phone. it registered the full time (4 hours) of usage for those 2 but it also said that it was only responsible for 13 % of my battery drain each. After that there was google play services.
I figured it was just a fluke, so I reboot the phone and recharged it. Once again, the battery drained in a mere 4 hours. This time it told me a voice call of only 10 minutes length was responsible for 35% of my battery drain, and that having my screen on for a seperate 10 minutes was responsible for 25% of my battery drain. This might be fine and dandy if the actual draining chart showed a steep fall off when i made the call, but that is not the case. the chart is a straight line showing constant drainage with no steep or flat areas. I'm thinking something is definitely wrong and the phone is causing itself to drain. maybe something hardware oriented, since i dont even have very many apps downloaded.
I've literally only interacted with my phone maybe 3 times today, and I didnt even do anything major.
Do you guys have any ideas as to what is going on with it?
I'm CM10, latest stable. not the monthlies. no cpu hacks or anything, and as I said, this problem cropped up this morning. before this everything has been fine.

If I hadnt already made sure I was following the tips and I wasnt dead sure that something was the problem, I would not have made this post.
I did manage to figure out the problem by sheer dumb luck and a little bit of educated guessing.
I uninstalled the MyFitnessPal and tried again today. I'm exhibiting normal battery drain now (10 hours and im at 46% with not too much usage of the phone).
If you read the post I made, no apps were showing up as a large battery drainer, and all my stats were reporting incorrect times (13% battery usage for a 4 hour period despite showing me i only used the phone for 10 minutes). So something was definitely wrong. Uninstalling the app fixed the issue though, so for anyone who exhibits this problem, uninstall whatever apps you most recently installed and do a reboot.
I didnt have to reset or anything.

Something is killing my battery?

So this has happened twice recently. I'm not sure if it's the battery or an app that caused this.
Basically I left my tablet at around 40% overnight idling and throughout the day at home while I was at work. I come back around 8 pm and pick it up..battery is dead. Like completely dead, the tablet won't turn on until I charge it a bit. It's kind of ridiculous in an approximately 14-16 hour period my tablet died going from 40% to 0 on idle?
How can I find out what's causing this? I'm not really sure what changed because I haven't really installed anymore apps in the past few weeks.
@C2Q Go into Settings > Battery > and then take a screen print and post it here of what % of battery each app has used.
Should give you an idea from there. If I were guess I'd say it will be Android.System thats draining it...well thats what happened to me.
Thanks. Yeah I have tried that, I also have a bunch of other battery monitoring apps. All it says is Android OS but no specifics. I'm wondering if there's a way to tell after rebooting, what caused that much battery drain (app wise)?
@C2Q Take a screenprint and post it here..
Hmm..I'll try to get one screenshot when this happens again. Yesterday I charged to 100% overnight, unplugged in the morning before work and then came back after work about 10-11h later to see it at 99%. That was pretty normal. Wakelock detector only showed Gmail as the biggest battery usage in those 11 hours. Will keep an eye out to see if this mysteriously drains again.
What rom are you using ? It could be a faulty kernel if android os is running like crazy.
