wp7 unknown battery drain

For the past 2 nights i have been experiencing this
had 50% power left the night before...
after 6 hours sleep
phone is out of battery @@
Now that aint right, im guessing something is running under locked screen and iono what!!! but i always jump out of any program when im about to sleep too, so it cant be because of that
In the past, i could have standby time for a long period especially after one night. But the past two days when i woke up, it always ran out of battery!! Also when i charged my phone to full life, i sometimes come back after a hour or two to find it dead!!!
This has never happened before and im wondering what could be the cause of it.
In the past i could leave my wifi, bluetooth, location on and it would still last overnight and i wasnt running any program
It cant be because of alphajax right? I mean i did install that two nights ago :\

That is really weird, which phone do you have? I have the hd7 and get 2 days between charges most of the time. Have you tried uninstalling alphajax to see if that helps?

I use a HTC mozart 7
Im gonna try uninstalling a few apps to see if that helps or switch to my secondary battery pack

just to let you know i watch videos before i go to sleep and because its get so hot it drains battery faster, even though i had 50% after I finished watching it went all out in about 8 hours of sleep.

That sounds highly likely, i was playing a game before that, then left it alone for 1 hour, check still had 50% battery, and then went to sleep
woke up with a dead phone

I will confirm that when I have overworked my focus, ie several hours of video and games, the battery can get very hot and if I wait until I get the low power warning, plugging it into my laptop USB can't keep up with the drain.

ok this is ridiculous
in 3 hours i lost 30% power on standby
ITS ON BLOODY STANDBY!!! lol i cant figure out whats causing it. I didnt use the phone for anything at all then put it to charge till 100%. Started counting down time...

If I were you and you dont mind loodsing games aves etc, Id try a hard reset and if that doesnt solve the problem go to LG and ask them to fix it if there may be a fault.

I've had this issue as well. This has been going on for months for me. Before NoDo and the pre-update.

Perhaps the battery isn't calibrated properly. Mine shoots down to 50% over the day but sometimes an hour or so after I hit fifty the battery goes critical then dies.

Battery Drain
I have the Samsung Focus. Pre NoDo I could get maybe 18 hrs in standby, and charging from USB on my computer was not happening. I had to plug it into the wall. If I actually used my phone for maps, calls, web or whatever I would get about 10 hr's depending how "how much I used it". This was with EVERYTHING turned off. Bluetooth, location services, feedback, anything and everthing I could disable. After NoDo, I get about 2 days, and now it will charge from my computers USB. Go figure.
All I can guess is there was some sort of corruption in the ROM.
Just a side note, does anybody know what "NoDo" stands for???

Before the February and March updates, I woke up one day to see my battery had drained from 100% to 0% in about 6 hours of sleep. After recovering from an angry awakening next morning, I paid a lot of attention to how the battery was draining. So I charged up to 100%, went to work on the tube as I always do, and noticed how after about 45 minutes, the battery was down to 50%. That was just some music playback and checking a few mobile websites.
In the end I remembered the day before I had installed two applications, one of them being Lyrics and the other one being a BPM (beats per minute) detector for getting the tempo of a music track. I decided to remove that application and, voilá, the battery drain stopped. I would have uninstalled the Lyrics app but this was already taking me to a decent power usage state, so I stopped there.
If I were you I would check recently installed apps to make sure you don't have a power drainer that's magically working in the background when you put the phone to sleep.

Did you disable feedback in settings. That extended my battery life considerably

I know what your going through, but i found the solution.
Your mobile data is constantly running to check for updates on the game and push notifications. Disable data connection whenever your not using it, and i swear you will see a massive improvement. I have a htc trophy and its notorious for its bad battery. I used to only get 4-6 hours out of it, and now i get 12-14, with WiFi.

That reminded me.... alphajax uses push (although i had disabled it) to notify the user if the other player had made a move...
It all seems LOGICAL that alphajax is the culprit here....
but i also have lyrics, how does that app affect the battery???

Battery Life Bug - Heads Up

Initially, I was very surprised and pleased by the battery life of this phone. I charged it on Saturday, and my usage since then took it down to about 73% this morning. 32 hours of use and 27% battery drain? I'll take that!
But something weird happened today. About midway through the day, the battery just started to crater. Worse yet, charging didn't do anything! The charging indicator animated, but battery life was still falling precipitously. I used it constantly on the train this morning, so I get why it was at 58% by the time I got to work, but then from 8am to about 2pm, it went down to 30%. Then from 2pm to 3pm while it was "charging", it went down to 18%.
Of course I googled the hell out of this, and came across this thread
And rebooting the phone magically stopped the battery drain, and allowed it to start charging again. So I guess our SGSII's are just like the international ones in that regard. Apparently some ROMs have fixed this, but we're still a little new to benefit from that approach. So, just a heads up: if your battery chart just starts falling into the floor, reboot and all will be well.
Note: this also explains the "Android OS" entry showing up at the top of your battery charts. I was shocked when 2 hours of display only accounted for 22% of my battery usage, while Android OS was 68%. Apparently the suspend mode goes insane sometimes and the process of attempting and failing to sleep the phone sucks the battery dry. I'd say that's pretty ironic, myself.

This happened to me also. I was not even touching my phone while working today and it beeped saying 50% I'm like wtf? So I let it sit still working and it beeped saying it needs to be charged. Crazy but I sure do hope this helps and is fixed soon.

happened 2 me couple times, i thought some app was keeping my phone from going to sleep. so i tried spare parts, spare parts doesnt work on stock gingerbread roms on samsung... so i cudnt figure out wat was going wrong... because lets say my battery was at 80%, after i reboot, it would be at 55%, just with a reboot...
i figured something was going wrong in the background, and the battery stats are not reported correctly, your REAL battery percentage shows right when you reboot...

after i rooted the phone, THIS FREAKING EXACT PROBLEM made me do a factory reset on my phone, which put my phone in a boot loop... after waiting 16+ hours for a stock kernal to come out, i had to brick my device on purpose (so sprint could not even turn it on), and dey gave me a new SGSII... if i didn't brick it, they would have known it was rooted, due to the international splash screen...

Had you installed anything that could have caused this?

Mine was plugged in all night and said 100% then froze this am and dropped to 10% after reboot

No. I haven't installed anything since yesterday, when it was (supposedly) sipping the battery. It just started going nuts this afternoon. That's why I started looking and found that bug thread for the international SGSII. Apparently there was also a bug in 2.3.3 that would cause some widgets to suck the battery dry within hours, while idle and even in airplane mode. So I guess they're moving in the right direction.

I had a weird issue just now. Battery was at 26 percent. Did a reboot by holding the power button down for 8 seconds or whatever it is. When it booted back up about 30 seconds later i had 10 percent battery.

Today is my first day giving this phone a while, and I've been awestruck by the battery life.
Screen on for a large chunk of the past 12 hours that I've owned it, and I'm still showing about 50 percent. I imagine a battery anticipating 4G usage but me having it turned off all the time gives the phone a real edge, lifewise.
Not looking forward to it cratering like you guys have seen.

I kept my htc evo one, after hearing about screen sensitivity issues and now this.

I got 23 hours with some heavy use on the first charge. It should only get better with the new kernels.

so this is 4 out of 4 samsung devices that do this. both galaxy tablets - 7 and 10.1, droid charge and now this. none of my other android tablets or phones do this. the battery just drops with nothing being used. at -2ma usage it goes from 60% to 20% in seconds or from a reboot.

That may be the case, but I know from my Droid Eris, that bugs just happen. It had the infamous "Time without a signal" bug that used like half the battery life per charge. It basically had to be ROMed to work right. And that bug was there for over a year.
It's just sad the phone makers are being so sloppy. It makes Android seem like a POS, when it's really their fault.

Is it normal to lose 27% charge with jjust 40 minutes of screen on time? Phone has been off the charger for maybe 2 hours. Im not getting anywhere near the claims of some people...

Thanks guys for this thread, My first day I went out and had the phone and installed everything and got root and did titanium backup from my EVO 3D, and played some third blade, and got great battery life, but then yesturday went to work and it just tanked 5 hours and down 50% i was shocked, going to pull the battery if that happens to correct that.

This really disappoints me to see the 'Android OS' bug hasn't been fixed by Samsung despite the issue being reported this Spring when the international SGS2 launched. If I remember correctly it's due to the phone not going into 'deep sleep' after it's been unplugged from the charger. Android OS will be listed in the battery stats as the top consumer of battery.. the workaround is to reboot the phone after pulling it off of the charger in the morning.
I hope Samsung stays true to its word and provides steady firmware updates for their recent devices.. NOT to introduce new features but to fix some of these glaring issues (this one first and foremost)

I'll have to try that. I know rebooting after the system goes nuts stops the drain, but I didn't realize it wasn't sleeping after being charged. I'll report back.

I experience weird battery draining periods throughout the day as well. I think I'll just try to clear my battery stats later.

This battery life isn't normal right? Bad drain

I cant tell if it's always been like this. Or if this actually isn't normal because I'm always concern with battery life. Im a very heavy user in the sense my phone will be on and im texting, xda, social apps i.e google +, email check every hr, and twitter.
However, i started feeling like my battery has been draining alot faster when the screen is on. I have no problem with the phone sleeping. I was experience this on Calk rom and now acs ics rom. I literally can look at my battery percentage drop 10% in like a half hour. Is this normal if screen is on the whole time? I've used better battery stats and system panel I can't find anything causing the drain. I see the suspend and events but doesn't that effect the phone sleeping?

Are you on the new modem? Looks like you have weak a signal. EG31 might help a little if your not on it already. I used the full EG31 tar right when it dropped and have been getting great battery life (it may be to early but so far so good)

Ok ill try the drm content stop..however my display brightness is already down at like 10%.

Also, kill the Social Hub as well, that drains the battery significantly.

You might try one of several roms available in dev. They address most of the aforementioned issues.

The biggest battery drain reason is the location by wireless network option. Make sure its unchecked. Ever since I did that, my battery life has been awesome. I get to keep my brightness high, Bluetooth on, etc...

All the basics (brightness and all that stuff) on top of the stuff you have running. The darn task killer/manager I see in the icon top left of your screenshot is a HOG on resources check the caching... You can literally **** with these phones for half a day to set it up the right way to conserve. I think wireless is hogging too but I am talking primarily about the first part of your rapid loss, the left part of the graph so to speak.

I purchased an extended battery and was still getting crappy battery life. SpareParts always FC'd on me... but last night I found Badass Battery Monitor in the market and in my opinion it's even better than SpareParts!
It helped me find that the Hotmail app was keeping my phone awake for almost an hour every day even though I had it set to download email only once a day. Removed that right away.
Plus it gives a great % readout in notification of the battery level. I think it's a fairly new app, but it really is worth checking out especially if you're having battery drain problems.

Just killing Social Hub has increased my battery life significantly. I'm at 11 hours now on battery, with 62% left. This is from last night when I unplugged the phone at 100%.

I'm on the Sydnicate Rom there isn't even no social hubb app. He has alot of the mods like noCiq and everything. My phone sleeps well its just when I start using it I can see it basically draining like 10% every half hour. I'm a heavy user I know my phone will drain fast while I'm on it I just would expect it to last 8-10 hours on heavy use.
Right NOW:
I'm at 4 hours 12 mins 22 secs at 37% left.
Display Time is 50% 2 hrs 41 mins 51s (Brightness is set all the way down)
Android OS 10%
So I'm assuming in 2 more hours my phone will die. If this is just normal for a heavy user then I guess I have to deal with it?

I was very disappointed with my Epic Touch when I first got it. I was getting a dead battery in about 6 to 8 hours no matter what I did or did not do.
Calibrating the battery seems to have fixed it.
I'm at 73% battery with 8:32 hours up time and I've made about 12 calls ranging from 2 to 10 minutes.
I've also checked voice mails, emails and other stuff.
I just charged the battery til it was full, plugged and repeated until it stayed at 10%, popped into CWM5 and cleared the battery data and then used Battery Calibration from the market (free) and it's like a got a battery upgrade!
As far as wake lock issues, I've not having any of those. I took my charger off the phone around 3:30am this morning (100% charge) and when I left for work at 6:50am, I had 98% battery still.
When I got to work it was down to 96%, I checked my email on the drive there.

I'm trying this out, wish me luck.
There doesn't seem to be any possible way to charge my battery to 100%, unplug it and not have it immediately drop to 99%.

If those screens are both from the same charge, I see nothing wrong with your phone.
you have 17% left, and you have 2.5 hours of screen on time. So you're on target to get just over 3 hours of on screeen time which is completely in the norm for these phones. AND you're over 12 hours. I don't understand what else you could ask for?
People get all caught up on total charge time, but, to be honest, it's completely IRRELEVENT.
If I dont use my phone I'll get easily over 48 hours out of the phone... Screen on time is what matters. And from a full charge, if I were to use my phone for 4 straight hours without stopping, it would be about dead. When the screen is on, you're using the phone, and the display is the biggest battery suck out there. When I do all the tricks to conserve battery, and I set it up right, I get 4 hours screen on time, which is pretty incredible with these phones.
Now, If you WANT to get better then you have right now, a few things are coming into play.
1) Your signal is weak, this will suck power no matter what more then it should, so get better signal if you want some more time out of your phone.
2) If you installed a new rom, and you didn't calibrate your battery properly, you're losing battery life.
to calibrate properly:
a) download battery callibration app from market
b) charge to 100%
c) unplug battery charger and REPLUG IN and wait for 100%
d) repeat step c a couple times
e) while plugged in hit the calibrate battery button in the app
f) unplug phone and use til dead and recharge
This will yeild you the best battery life.
3) De-Theme. Although I use a theme, every theme I've tested, for one reason or another, drains my battery faster then running the stock phone theme.
4) If you haven't done the basic battery saving things, you should do them to help yourself out. Here's a few I use.
a) Turn off background data, you only need it on to use market
b) Turn off, or set sync for all email and social apps at as long intervals as possible
c) dont use any widgets
d) download watchdog lite so you can see when apps are acting up and using extra battery
e) when you're done using your phone, open task manager, kill all apps, and clear memory
f) always leave the brightness off automatic and as low as possible
g) download SETCPU and run your phone at 800mhz, and undervolt as much as possible (50mv most all phone can take)
h) use black or dark wallpapers, on LED screens back means the pixel is off which uses less battery
G will be your biggest battery save. I've also tried using the SUPERFREEZE thing in the dev section and, besides in sleep mode, I saw no adverse effect. If you wanna kill socialhub, fine, but I dont see any noticable difference on my phone with it off.
If you do all these I promise you'll get better battery life.

Wow, I did a proper calibration today and I'm getting great results already. I've calibrated before but I never had cleared stats in CWM or did the unplug then replug charging thing.
Anyways, I after 12 hours I'm still at 35%! The longest I've ever gone before is 12.5 hours. Screen on time = 1 hour 30 min, but some of that was a battery intensive game (puzzle quest 2). Also i'm running calk's rom, so i'm sure that helped.

My 1st sprint GSIII was fine for the 1st month. I could get upto 3 1/2 days of battery with very light usage (mostly standby time). NOt sure what caused what happened next but the phone became extremely warm and the battery life dropped to approx. 2 hours. The phone was very warm even while off for hours!! And it obviously got even hotter while on the charger. The only way to get the phone to return to room temp was to pull the battery and leave it out for a few hours. Turning wifi/data/sync/GPS etc. off did nothing. The odd thing was, the battery was a normal temp. The heat came from the lower part of the phone (where the processor is). It also gave incorrect battery readings. While plugged in it would read "100%" and "charging" the LED stayed red, never turning green. I also could pull the battery and put it right back in and it would read 20-30 % difference VS. when I took it out.
The phone was swapped at a sprint store covered by insurance.
The only thing i did differently usage wise was link the phone to my dropbox account. It seemed to sync normally so i can't confirm dropbox caused the issue. I just can't figure out what the phone was "doing" while it was off. Just thought i'd share the story with the phone. The new 1 is running fine.

This doesn't sound good at all. My cousin's GII on AT&T did something similar to this. The phone would be completely turned off and it would vibrate every 10 minutes. Even pulling out the battery and reinstering it made it automatically turn back on and vibrate again and again.
Hopefully this is an isolated issue what you are talking about.

What kind of signal are you getting?
Mine was like what you descrbed for a couple days(almost no signal at home) and I was getting ready to return it but didnt have time because I was leaving for Vegas. Long story short when I got to Vegas I upated profile and PRL and havent had a problem since. Maybe the towers in your area are under constrction.

My phone has gotten hot ever since I got it, but it will cool down when I stop using it. I am getting horrible battery life even witha 4300 mah battery. today it wouldnt even last 11 hours. It had 3 hours total usage time on it. I am now trying another 4300 mah battery to see if that is the problem or if its the phone. my reg battery wont last me very long either. I am also using juice defender free version and advanced task killer plus the built in task killer and I cannot get my phone to last very long. With my orig Evo I had the sprint extended battery (2500? mah) and it last me til bedtime with 50% left.

The only time this happened to me was when an badly behaving app "ran away". I would get really bad battery usage at the same time. I could cure it by clearing ram, which shut down all the running apps. Since this hasn't happened to me in a while I'm guessing that whatever app was doing that to my phone has been updated to fix the bug.

My issue was very odd. My phone was normal lasting up to 3 days with very light usage. It would sit for hours at "room temp"..the only thing i did differently was link it to my dropbox accnt. It seemed to sync ok..it was shortly after that i noticed the phone was very warm towards the lower 1/3 of the phone. I thought maybe there was something running or taxing the processor. So after working on it for a few days(turning everything off i.e. wifi/gps/data/sync/etc etc.) the battery got worse and worse. I then unlinked dropbox, stopped all running apps and let the phone sit in airplane mode over night. Still no joy. So i turned the phone off and let it sit for about 6 hours. It was still "very warm" while off!! At that point I pulled the battery for about 2 hours and the phone returned to normal temp. What could the phone be doing while turned off for hours?
The phone was stock and updated. I use an airrave so i dont have signal issues. The processor seemed to be running at full load even while the phone was off. The battery life went from around 3 days to not even 2 hours. The phone did seem to have the known "cell standby" issue(where the counter is reporting an incorrect usage %). While charging, the phone was even hotter to the point of me thinking it would burst. Oddly enough, the battery was at a normal temp. It was no where near the temp of the bottom of the phone(where the processor is located).The new GS3 is running normally so far. The tech at the sprint store couldnt figure the old 1 out so they just replaced it(insurance/no charge).

Solution for battery problems

after talking to lg and rogers i found a way to fix my battery bug or what ever it was........
Issue: weak battery-very bad battery life-needed to charge twice a day on normal usage. Lg and rogers both said its a hardware issue and need to be replaced......(IT WASNT)
Solution few easy steps should fix it:
1. Let your battery die to 0%. It drives down by 2%. Turn it on, it will let you turn it back on and shots automaticly back down. do it a few times till it shows0%!!
2. Plug it into your charger and let it charge to 100%.
right now its 2 pm i started using the phone at 9 am haevy!! besides that is my s3 that i used half as much today. Battery life on the optimus G is 60% and on the S3 55%. Battery life of the LG seem to went to normal. they claim its 40% better then on the s3. im trying tomorow on eco mode see if there is a difference.
PS: sorry for my english im italian live in canada and grew up in germany haha

I'm not so sure this is a good thing to do. I've read that you should never allow a Li-Po battery to drain completely because it physically damages it.
Then again, it's hard to find credible information on the subject.
Edit: Wikipedia cites the following article which states that overdischarging will damage the battery: http://www.powerstream.com/li.htm

Damage is when you leave battery discharged for some time, short period = almost 0. Of course there is little damage by doing this but no more than frying your phone at 100% Sorry for my english..

Fixed mine tho my battery life is crazy long now

It calls the placebo effect.
Li-polymer batteries calibrated on factory and they absolutely dont like deep discharging.
By the way LG promised 800 cycles of charging before the battery will start dying. I think in case of full discharge, the amount of cycles will be greatly reduced.

I have provisioned my battery which means going from full charge to 0 three to 4 times when I first got it and I always get a full day with medium use now.

I'm wondering, if this provisioning is so helpful for a battery, why wouldn't they do it at the factory?

After reading your guys' posts I decided to do a bit of a test.. I ran my phone all the way down from 100 to 0.. phone turned off.
Then, I turned my phone on about 5 times which then would immediately shut off onve booted to the os.
Then, I turned the phone on and placed it in the recovery mode.. doing this ensured that the screen stayed on until the phone was indeed drained entirely.
Then I charged it up till 100% before I went to bed, turned airplane mode on, closed the screen and went to bed.
Wake up this morning and looked to see how much battery drain occurred during sleep.
After about 5 minutes of using my phone it dropped down to 97%.. only lost 3% overnight. I was very pleased to see this as it confirms in my case that the phone is able to go into deep sleep.
I've also noticed that my battery seems to be draining slower than before.. before I could surf the web for ten minutes over wifi and lose a full 10% of battery.. so far today I've been on the web, downloading email, messing with some apps for around an hour or so and I'm currently at 86%.. definite improvement I believe.
And FYI this is with eco mode off, screen at 50% brightness, no gps and sync on sparingly. This is also on the latest update (my phone is on bell)

I'd be really tempted to try this, but I've heard so much from so many credible sources that total drain on Li-ion is bad news. Conflicted

It's bad to constantly cycle it full to empty. A full cycle once in a while is fine and on some devices it's necessary to calibrate the battery. Additionally, it's not good to store the battery empty. There's no harm in letting it drain all the way occasionally although killing it then further killing it in recovery is probably overkill.

Indeed, I only did it in the hopes that it would help to recalibrate the battery.. I recently was forced to run a flash back to the original firmware using the kbz method.. I was able to bring back to stock but noticed afterward that my battery life did not seem anywhere near as good as it was prior.
It could be that the kbz I flashed to was the newest updated version and it just isn't as good with the battery life but I felt it was worth trying draining all the way to see if it would help.. it does seem to have helped a bit though my battery still shows that android system keeps awake for 4+hours which is odd..
Anyway, once in a while I don't see it being a big deal.

If anyone is going to attempt the things mentioned here, why not do us all a favor and post some actual numbers from Better Battery Stats (a before and after) for some real analysis.
I'm not implying that anyone is lying, but it is just too easy to perceive an improvement when that is what one is expecting.

according to my experience, the original one is the best
