So I acquired a ET4G the other day from a friend who had dropped it in some water. He did an insurance claim so he has his new one and gave me this one to play with. Everything works fine except the mic and the notification light was stuck on. This is more of a curiosity project than anything else.
I completely disassembled and cleaned the circuit board and contacts. Now the notification light works properly and the mic works when recording video.
There is no mic in skype, calls, searching, anything except video recording that I've tested so far.
Sooo, Does video recording use a separate mic , if not does anyone have any ideas? It's running CM9 right now but shouldn't make a difference.
To my knowledge its the same mic. I would try using odin to flash the el26 kernel with cwm5 by acs. Then using that to flash an el29 build rom. Such as calkulin 3.0. Just to make sure whatever your friend had on there is stock of latest release. That wat if there is problems you know for sure its not software related.

Alright, Went back to stock, flashed Calk 3.0 still no good.
So I don't believe that it is a software issue. I can fully accept that it is fried, water and electronics just don't mix. I just don't understand it working for video recording but nothing else.
I think the are three mics on the board, I'd guess the main one at the bottom for calls is shot. It's possible it could be replaced if you can get it off, then with some smd paste and a heat gun you could put a new one on.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of this. Far too much work for a phone that cant be hooked up anyways. Although it would be kind of fun to see if I could swap Mics.

I believe he said that he lost it, they asked him if he wanted to GPS track it and he said no. Paid the deductible and they mailed him a new one. That's why I am not to worried about fixing it, has a bad ESN anyways.

I bought an evo on release date and it had a few problems so I took it back and got a new one. About 2 hours after I got my new one home I heard it making a really fast clicking/tapping sound. (click click click tap tap tap) I thought the sound was coming from my speaker so I put it up to my ear after a few seconds I looked at the speaker and noticed that it wasnt the speaker but that it was the camera. I could see the lens physically moving back and forth really fast. Naturally I started the camera app to see what would happen. I snapped a picture and noticed that it was very blurry. I then went to camera settings and changed them and its still very blurry. Its almost as if the camera just refused to focus (looked like I needed glasses)... Naturally, the next step I took was to try to record a video... Same thing very blurry but sound is perfect. Next I tried the front facing camera. It was fine.
I have tried re-starting it a bunch of times... tried cleaning the lens...
About 4 or 5 hours later I took another picture and it was fine. Now the problem is intermittent and if I take 10 pictures 3 or 4 will be in focus and the others wont.
1. My phone is not rooted
2. I have not dropped it
3. It has not gotten wet.
4. Babied it the whole time I've had it.
5. Tried turning off auto focus and using manual
Any suggestions?
Take it back.

Same thing just happened to me on my Evo that is over a month old. Only happens intermittently though. After a reboot, it seems to be fine for a while.
mine is blurry too. is there any hack for it? im not covered by sprint for this. Maybe deal with htc directly? any ideas hackers?
wht the hell are you not covered by sprint? of course you are covered so take it back.
both of you guys take the damn things back... seriously why are you even here asking for help... the only help you will get is sprint repairing or replacing it

Ive had my evo for almost two years and I installed the cm9 rom for it and the camera was having this problem so I went back to my backup and same problem. It wont focus. It acts like its focusing but just wont. Also I've opened the phone several times so a replacement is out of the question.

broke my phone, got a new one.
from the start, this one feels different. the led flash looks different inside, the front led is a different shade, the side buttons are noticeably stiffer, the back cover stays on is harder to remove and reinstall (a good thing).
anyone have anything to say about this?
Maybe its new

I agree. Tolerance standards are there to ensure consistency but things made by man, especially if thousands of units are manufactured, are bound not to be entirely exact.

There are definitely good and bad batches of phones. Sometimes people get an occasional lemon. That stiffness of the buttons will pass. You may not have noticed it from using it every day. Same happened on my OG Epic when I had keyboard and screen replaced

Confusing post, can't tell what modem you are actually on or what phone you are talking about (your first one or the replacement), but in regard to this line, back to 30 i go, guess you didn't read the fine print. There is no way to go back to EG30. But you can try your luck on EG12.
Though at this point you are better off staying on EG31 and running a stock kernel rather than wading out in the sea of missed calls that is EG12.
Good luck.

edit: im a little scared right now, trying to flash EG31 from EG12 using CWM, it says flashing modem, its been a few minutes now, its not moving.
I have TEP.
Here's my problem.
I have an Epic that, on multiple ROMs (SyndicateROM Frozen, CleanGB MTD, and even stock at EC05, EI22, and EL30), sometimes enters a state where the capacitive buttons (menu, home, etc.) stop responding. They flash when you touch them, but I get no haptic feedback or response from the phone's OS. I have to slide open the keyboard and use the hard buttons (which DO work). Also, the capacitive touchscreen works perfectly.
I've owned the phone for over a year, and this just started happening.
My guess is that it's a hardware problem and that there's something wrong with the capacitive button controller or related circuitry.
But how in the heck do I prove this to Sprint?!?!?
I wiped it back to EB13 and took it OTA up to EI22. I verified I was still getting the button lock.
I took it in, but they couldn't reproduce the lockup. They calibrated the touchscreen for me and rewiped it. I took it home and was still seeing the problem.
What do I do next?
If the phone isn't malfunctioning while I'm at the store, how am I going to get them to replace any part of the phone?
gawd where's a camcorder when you need one LOL I'm not entirely sure but id say hang around a tech store for a while and wait for it to happen and then run and be like " LOOK LOOK ITS DOING IT ITS DOING IT!" In all seriousness make sure you can reproduce it or video tape it

Apparently, things went easier than I thought.
I started getting reboots on the phone today (EL30 trouble?). I took it in, and they wiped it. I picked it up after work and sat in my car for a few minutes. The phone rebooted. I took it back in, and they ordered a replacement.
EDIT: And not once did they need to see my video. The whole repair setup was very smooth. I was impressed!

So I have had the call echo issue for some time. Specifically once I started flashing ICS leaks left and right, but come to find out our issue is HARDWARE related rather than software related. To be clear this is a fix for the caller echo issue where the person you are talking to on the phone hears their own voice echoing back to them.
This thread pretty much sums up the whole thing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441510
Cliff notes: There is a speaker that has come loose in your phone either from some suspect glue, or perhaps even a rough tumble if you've dropped your phone once or twice. Once this happens, the nearby NC (noise cancellation) microphone picks it up and the call echo follows.
The fix here is very simple, you just need to unscrew the 6 tiny screws (careful not to strip them, and remove and reinstall them in the same order) and then pop off the casing that protects your T-989's innards. While the thread (and pics) above are for the international Galaxy SII, the important part at the top that needs to be covered (the speaker) is the same.
I tried the fix without really doing anything except removing the casing, cutting a small sliver of an old business card to put on top of the speaker, and closing and screwing the case back on. Didn't mess with anything else, and the fix works great. I called a couple people before I reinstalled the screws and I encourage everyone to make a test call to make sure the echo is gone before putting everything back together.
This is a really simple/easy fix to get rid of the call echo, and it explains while some people have the echo with/without a case and to varying degrees. But I'm now enjoying Racing's UCLD ICS Rom with no call echo and all is right in the world.
If anyone needs anymore help just let me know, and those of you that have the echo and try this please report back.
Interesting..... tho I do not have the dreaded call echo, this makes sense because I never dropped my phone. . I know what to do now if I have the problem tho!
Thanks forbthe saceifice my question is tjis: if itsbhardware, then why is it that i dont get the same issue when running non-ics roms. It seems to me that running a non sgh-t989 ics ported rom is the issue. While some of us have been lucky, its happened to me with every ics ported rom but never with gb or aosp roms(eugene cm7 kang). ??? On a side note, if thats what it takes ro fix it, im more than willing to wait for ics for our phone than possibly break something and void my warranty. Also, ive used a case and also havent and have dropped my phone a few times. I would like to see other confirmed reports of people trying this.

Make sense why some users never experience it and others do no matter what they flash.
I am thinking Samsung obviously must have adjusted the noise cancellation mic sensitivity or settings with ICS. It could also be the ICS framework with the way it handles it or maybe the RIL (radio interface layer) of the ICS roms.
Either way it makes a lot of sense especially if so many dont experience the issue on any rom while others it is every ICS rom.

Thats true or it could be that we don't have a official ics modem +Ics rom it could be interfering some how
Call echo only happens with volume up all the way. If u put in call volume to medium-low it isn't noticeable. Call ur cell from a landline and blow into the mic on landline phone, if it repeats back lower volume and repeat until u don't hear it. What's happening is the headset speaker is too loud and the other mic is picking it up at the top

That may not be best for pple in the city with low call volume i know they would want to be able to actually hear the person outside you know
im a little scared to pull my phone apart too. I think i'll wait for a software fix
well i never dropped my phone but i do have that issue with ICS and GB!!! when im on ICS my friends says that there is an echo when im on GB they say they can hear me wierd, and when i take the case off they say its a little bit better. so i do think its a hardware issue!!
in the other hand my friend that works at tmobile says that he had heard this issue with all of tmobile phones not just this one
Thanks for the replies guys, good discussion on this topic so far.
I agree this is definitely a "macguyver" type fix, but hey if it works it works. I've been daily driving Racing's various ICS ports since the initial leak in SPITE of the caller echo issue (I just talked to everyone on speakerphone lol) so this is really welcome news to me.
As far as damaging your phone, IMHO hacking the phone and installing Rom's is just as potentially dangerous (if not more so) than taking out 6 tiny screws out and inserting a small piece of paper underneath the casing, but its everyones decision if they want to try or not.
I have verified with 4 different callers and tested myself that the fix works for me WITHOUT a case. When I put the D30 case back on my phone there is still echo. Not as bad as before, but its definitely there.
So rolling with no case is kinda annoying but I was thinking of getting an extended battery anyways so this just makes it easier
FWIW I tried this fix and still get call echo... Slightly reduced maybe but definitely still there.

Interesting do you have a case on your T989? Are you on a GB rom or an ICS leak?
Did you use a business card or just a thin piece of paper? Sorry about all the questions just trying to get as much info as possible from people experiencing this issue.
I also ONLY had the call echo issue when I flashed an ICS rom (and I had the call echo on all 3 of them), however when I went back to STOCK Gingerbread it went away. So maybe this issue is part software/part hardware?
The ICS leaks were the first roms I ever flashed, so I'm interested to know if ANYONE has the call echo on STOCK Gingerbread? I'm thinking that something in ICS increases the gain or does something to either the NC microphone or the speaker somehow?
Happened only on ICS Roms with and without case. GB Roms are ok. Used a business card.

Bummer man sorry to hear
If it is a "little" bit better with the business card in there you could try to maybe fold it over and make it a bit thicker? If it helps even a little bit maybe there is some potential there to fix it?
where are the noise cancellation files in the ics leak?
my experience from today... i went back to 100% stuck and still had echo.. not as bad with an ics rom.. but my girlfriend had told me that she was hearing it so i took off the cover and she says that it was better. so i kept talking to her and then she said the she hears an echo again so i started to talk more into the mic.. and it was gone. so i do believe its a hardware issue and its when my mouth is not close enough to the mic is when others hear an echo.. ok then again i rooted the phone and flash ics megamix on it so i gave my phone to my girlfriend to see if i can hear an echo.. so when she was holding the phone correctly i didnt heard it but when she put the phone in her shoulder and to hold it there while she talks i hear the echo.. so tell me if this a software or hardware issue.. i think it have something to do with the surrounding and how laud you talk to the person
So my phones been rooted on Aokp for about a month now and its been working fine. However today I discovered that when making calls I cannot hear the other person unless I have headphones or speaker is on? I've already tried rebooting and odin to stock but its still not working? Any ideas or fix

It's the hardware. Unroot the phone if needed and take it to Sprint. They will "look" at it and order a new one if you have insurance. I'm currently waiting for my new one cause of the same issue plus half a dozen more. Tired of being the Tool on the bluetooth just to use my phone normally. I know it has nothing to do with the software because the repair tech tried to 'Odin' it and reinstall everything OTW. This seems to be a common accurance when rooting. I can't be sure in my case cause my phone fell out of my pocket bounced off the concrete and into a pool. I noticed all the problems after that happened. Good luck
