[Q] Multiple Personalities in Navigation - HTC One X

I ran into a very strange issue yesterday while using my phone for navigation. I was driving from Rockville, MD to Crofton, MD and along the way my phone decided to use three different text to speech voices to speak the directions. One was the standard female voice I was used to, the second was another female voice but with a more artificial sound, and then third was a male voice with an English accent that I've never heard before. The weirdest part was that they would sometimes take turns giving the directions; a female voice would start saying "Take exit 13B" and then the male voice would come in with "for Maryland 3 North, Crofton." Often times one of the voices would complete a full instruction, but then it would be a different voice for the next instruction. I had the same issue this morning with navigating to the Baltimore airport, so at least I know I wasn't just going crazy from the heat.
I guess this isn't much of an issue - actually kind of entertaining - but I was wondering if anyone else has run into this. I've got an unlocked Asian version of the HOX on version 1.29.707.11 and I'm using it on AT&T. I guess the one downside is that the male voice is harder for me to hear than the female voices, so I would like to keep one of those at all times - like it was on my Nexus One. Any thoughts?

Your phone needs immediate psychiatric help. It's clearly a schizophrenic.
This is a new one by me. Have you tried clearing data in Google maps?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

I have an unlocked Asian One X as well and I experienced the same thing...I used Google Navigation for the first time on my phone over the weekend...I got the male voice calling out the directions then the next direction the female voice would call it out....I went WTF??? but it got to my destination so it was no biggie
As you said monkeyboy0076 its entertaining just as long it doesn't make me go around in circles

Man, that's crazy. I cleared out my Google Maps data but haven't used the navigation yet. I'll be taking a trip this weekend so I'll have a chance to try it out then.

I had the same issue on my trip this weekend, so I'm not sure what else to do. I also am experiencing the low navigation volume issue as described in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1707967. Is there something wrong with the version of Navigation on the One X?

This can be fixed. Change the text-to-speech language manually in the normal Android settings menu. I have always had this problem with my HD2 running CM7. If I forget to set it to UK English after a re-flash, it will randomly break into American English at certain waypoints during navigation.
Edit: Except, with the latest version of Maps, my HD2 is forced to use a very harsh american voice that is different from the text-to-speech settings I use (Pico TTS). So er, there may be an issue with the latest Maps too.
I haven't got my One X back from repair yet, so I can't check that.

Android 2.2 Bluetooth Voice Dialing on Desire?

Bluetooth Voice Dialing is in the Froyo feature set.
I can't see this feature anywhere on the Desire after the 2.2 update. Anyone else?
I can't find it either...
really really annoyed about this!! when i bought the phone it was something I really needed! Was told it would be on the phone with 2.2 in a couple of months but now nothing!!! Grrrr!!!
I read somewhere that you can use the voice search do dial someone, and it actually works, but there are two problems:
1) Since the main objective of voice search is to search using google, you need to be on wireless or 3G to start using voice search, even if you don't want to use google at all. So if you don't leave your 3G active all the time, you'll have to activate it before launching voice search.
2) You can't launch voice search by pressing the action button on the bluetooth headset, so you still have to pull the phone out of the pocket to activate it and then give the command.
Those two problems pretty much makes voice search unusable as a replacement to a dedicated voice dialing dialog, because you always have to take the phone out of pocket and interact a lot with it to finally call someone. It's easier to just tap your contact's shortcut to call it.
It was in the leaked ROM that was floating around a couple of weeks ago too! My guess this will be coming in another update around the time that HTC release their car dock. Bloody gits.
in the prerelease 2.2 (LeeDroid) I am using if I press the talk button on the steering wheel it requests a voice command and then searches for whoever you said "call". But it its true that 3G MUST be activated.
Can anyone recommend a 2.2 ROM with HTC sense that has this feature? Is it a good idea for me to reflash do you think?
This was the one thing i was waiting for with the froyo release and it appears to be missing.
Im not seriously considering rooting my phone just to get this feature.
Can anybody recommend me a rom with this feature enabled?
I'm in the same boat, wasn't really bothered about rooting but now it looks like I'm going to have to!
I've emailed HTC on their support page, does anyone think I'm going to get a response?

HTC replied to me saying "we can decide what parts of the system are used and which are not".
Removing this from the release is ridiculous. It's so common now for use of hands-free kits to be compulsory, if not the only legal option.
It was my main reason to debrand and upgrade, only to find that it's been omitted.
Maybe some kind soul can manage to knock up an APK from a release where it was included (fingers crossed)
Well here's the response from HTC!
Not good really!
Hi Dave, Voice to text is only available in North America due to the limitations of the voice recognition software database that our phone uses. We are researching the possibility of expanding the coverage of the Voice-To-Text feature but we are still analyzing
the feasibility and currently have no schedule to relay this to you now. We have your contact information on our system and will contact you when we have a solution. Kind regards, Tom HTC

Don't tell me that HTC is not going to include this feature in Froyo! I bought my desire AFTER the announcement of Bluetooth voice dialing, and I thought I could wait for this to come in 2.2 update, and now they say they won't include it???? Are they crazy enough to omit one of the main features in Froyo??? What on earth are they thinking?!?!
Correct - they are NOT going to include it in Froyo 2.2
I have the official HTC version of Froyo that doesn't have it, and am rather upset as i would have rooted my phone to get this feature, but I was under the impression I didn't have to.
Now that I've updated to HTC's version not only do I still not have Bluetooth voice dialing, but I also don't have the option to root my phone anymore to get it.
Nice to see that they spent time on real things like a new android graphic, the way the lock displays and other useless but blingy stuff instead of items that were lacking that almost every other phone on the market has for granted.

If voice to text doesn't work, how does Google Voice search operate?
This is complete arse.
I thought that in the announcement Google said they were expanding it to work with different accents and languages?

I tried it a few days ago and thought it was terrible.
I've tried it and seems to work well, I've emailed the dev as well about the last comment but he said it uses the in built speech to text library so it will be as good / bad as any other android dialer
Hope that helps!

[Q] voice search not recognizing commands

anyone else noticing a challenge with their voice search?
i used to be able to say "Navigate to Los Angeles International Airport" and the phone would put the address into gps navigation... but now i get google searches for los angeles international aiport
"dail 6262164571" gets me a google search for "kbb 2164571"
"call elaine" gets me "did you mean... kbb, qb, etc"
AT LEAST these results are consistent.. but these results are consistently WRONG. anyone with any clues how to remedy?
******* EDIT / UPDATE FIX (6/1/2011) *******
I AM VERY HAPPY TO REPORT THAT I FOUND THE SOLUTION (that's worked for me) ON THE GOOGLE FORUMS!
i hope it works for you guys... see the fix here:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/...04a4aa5a04556c
pretty much (for the lazy):
On your phone, Start Google Voice
Click the Menu button and tap Settings.
Turn of "Personalized Recognition"
Tap the "Google Account Dashboard"
Scroll down to the "Speech" section and click the "Anonymize recognition"
Click "Yes..." when it asks if you really want to.
i was losing hope but someone answered my post finally on the google forums =D
er.. anyone with clues at least of what i can look into? or anyone ever experience anything similar?
Nope..I'm not having issues but you can try....
Settings - Voice input - Voice recog settings
Check "personalize recog" if its not checked
OR uncheck it if it is.
Worth a try at least.
thanks dude... i tried that -- no avail.
i think my voice search chops off like the first bit of what i'm saying... it's kind of funny. if i say "navigate navigate to los angeles international airport" it'll process fine, but if i say "navigate to los angeles international airport" it'll google search the "lose angeles international airport" LOL
maybe i'll need to do some stuff through the terminal ?? have no freakin' clue... this is weird tho
Don't know if this will have an effect but it fixes a lot of other apps when they act weird. Try clearing the data for Voice search.
Settings - manage apps - Voice search
Clear data and/or uninstall updates.
dkechitkid thanks for taking the time to help me out -- i'm very grateful!
i looked in the market for voice search and it looks like some other users might be experiencing something similar
not sure how to contact the "devs" of the app tho b/c it's google inc.. i'll figure it out.
Not a problem. Good luck and if you find a solution..report back to this post. You never know, I might run in to this one someday and need the fix.

Although I have an HTC Incredible, I am having the exact same problem; the kbb business and everything. This problem only started happening recently for me (last several weeks).
I just discovered (tonight) that if I say:
Test Navigate to Burger King
It drops "Test" and I end up with "Navigate to Burger King". The first word doesn't have to be "test", any word seems to do. Not perfect, but now I can at least get directions. This has been driving me crazy and I've tried everything to resolve it (flashing different ROMs, deleting everything on my sdcard, etc).
Update:
These people seem to be having the same problem:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=3ac8c0fa59a11403&hl=en
a lot of people have this problem, its an issue with the microphone in our phone being the only thing that is crappy, the voice quality that thing hears is horrible, try a bluetooth device and youll see it can hear you now

The app does NOT have BT audio enabled. (A very bad lack of a feature.) It hasn't been updated recently either. And the phone mic works fine most of the time in my experience.

I never had this problem until recently and I have a different phone than the OP has (I have an HTC Incredible). I believe this is a problem with the most recent version of the voice search application (users posting to the discussions I linked to believe this as well).
Maybe I'll back up my current ROM and revert to an older version of MIUI to verify.
Edit: I didn't see Cache83's post before I wrote my post. I tried Cache83's solution and it fixed my problem. Thanks for chasing this one down Cache83!

Voice Dialing over Bluetooth?

I haven't seen this mentioned but has anybody been able to use a BT headset to make, receive, and control calls? I can't. I get "this feature isn't supported on the connected phone" from my Blueant Q2. I know this was an issue with the Sensation and tried installing the voicedialer.apk but the phone won't allow it to be installed. I installed Vlingo but it crashes the phone and I have to do a reset to get it back. Thoughts? Experiences?
Update. We're apparently screwed. There's no native voice dialer included in ICS. I found one that installs but it loses its connection with the headset as soon as it starts. The folks on the Vivid forum are having the same issue. I tried the apps they discussed but they didn't work either. So I guess we wait for HTC to do something.

Yes... ish
I posted the same question a few days ago, but I got no reply, so I bought the phone anyway and tried. Vlingo sort of works with my jawbone earpiece. What I do not like at all is the fact that it does not confirm the command before dialling, or at least I did not figure out how to set it up properly, with the result of dialing the wrong contact in case of a misunderstanding.
I am really missing the simplicity of the blackberry voice dialler, amongst other things (mostly due, I guess, to my being a newbie with android). It was a no-brainer, whilst all the solutions I have seen for android are slightly more cumbersome.
Thanks to the other thread you linked I think I am going to try cyberon voice commander. I could save a couple of dollars/euros buying their voice dialler, but as far as I can see it needs training to attach voice tags to contacts. I don't like the idea of spending time to do that.
This seems like such a basic feature these days, why the hell hasn't it got it?!!!
this is very disappointing news. all the reviews i looked at mentioned voice dialing as a feature. and i just ordered a blueant q2. just tried using voice dial on my phone menu. awful.
i found a retail site online that says the blueant q2 is not compatible with the htc one x and identified several other bluetooth items (including blueant) that are. i decided to try the jawbone era and have it on order. not as many desirable (to me) features as the q2, but if it works, it will be a step up from nothing.
online site is htcpediadotcom. i don't know how reliable it is; first time i've looked at it.
I only just noticed yesterday that the phone would not send the bluetooth connection to the head unit in my car, even though it was connected to it.
I had to use the phones loudspeaker....
All of the Android phones in the past 2 years have worked fine!

JB voice search output changed from female to male

I got the update to JB 4.1.1 two days ago, when i tested the voice search the voice that talks back was a female voice (UK), today i tried it again and for some reason the voice has changed to a male voice (UK), this is weird because there doesn't seem to be any way to change it back to a female voice, which i prefer, has anyone else found that the output voice has changed from female to male, or from male to female, also, is there a way to change this in the settings somewhere as i can't seem to find it, i'm running 100% stock JB 4.1.1.
Did you try running apply transgendered.Zip in cwm

You shouldn't complain, some of us don't even have voice feedback for Google search at all...
I prefer the male voice it is more natural. I think it's the UK version of the US woman. I also noticed voice actions work in the UK also.

Has anyone worked out what caused this yet? The same thing happened to me, first couple of days I had the female voice, but then without doing anything, it just started using a male voice. The female one was much better as it's clearer, especially on the low speaker levels the Galaxy Nexus has! Every bit helps.
As the OP, I'm running stock JB on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I've heard that certain manufacturers had to use male voices in Germany because Germans refused to take directions from women.
True story.
i was able to get it back to female voice by changing everything in language and input settings and voice search settings to US. It takes a few minutes after u do the changes for the female voice to come back

Yes, I think the default voice for the US is the woman and for the UK the man. All other countries get the robot voice, but will hopefully be updated soon.
The thing is, the UK female voice from ICS was clearer and more legible than either the US female voice or the UK male voice on JB. And I liked the way it sounded kind of mean, and the haughty way it said "The Tor Net-wuuurk". Or maybe I should just get out more...

Can't get text-to-speech to change

I want the british guy instead of the lady on Google Now and in Navigation, but even though I set it for English (UK) in general settings and Google Now settings, it still won't change! I've restarted the device several times with no luck. On my Nexus 7, the UK guy works in Navigation only with a data connection, otherwise it is still that lady
Any ideas?
Also, kinda unrelated, is there an apk for the 4.0 / 4.1 tts voices for older devices?
Bump.
Can anyone get the US lady to change to the UK guy for tts in Google Now or Navigation? The stock UK guy, not some third party tts engine.
I can't help, but I am having the same problem on two VZW Galaxy S 3s. I try to switch to the male Google UK English voice but most of the time (but interestingly, not ALL the time), the female American English voice plays instead. More bizarre: sometimes, the female voice will slow down (the voice engine allows different speaking rates) mid-sentence, resulting in it going from bright happy feminine words to creepy masculine monster words right in the middle of a phrase.
Turn right ONTO LENIOR street!
