I got the update to JB 4.1.1 two days ago, when i tested the voice search the voice that talks back was a female voice (UK), today i tried it again and for some reason the voice has changed to a male voice (UK), this is weird because there doesn't seem to be any way to change it back to a female voice, which i prefer, has anyone else found that the output voice has changed from female to male, or from male to female, also, is there a way to change this in the settings somewhere as i can't seem to find it, i'm running 100% stock JB 4.1.1.
Did you try running apply transgendered.Zip in cwm

LOL, i hope i don't have a transgender phone.
You shouldn't complain, some of us don't even have voice feedback for Google search at all...
I prefer the male voice it is more natural. I think it's the UK version of the US woman. I also noticed voice actions work in the UK also.

Has anyone worked out what caused this yet? The same thing happened to me, first couple of days I had the female voice, but then without doing anything, it just started using a male voice. The female one was much better as it's clearer, especially on the low speaker levels the Galaxy Nexus has! Every bit helps.
As the OP, I'm running stock JB on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I've heard that certain manufacturers had to use male voices in Germany because Germans refused to take directions from women.
True story.
i was able to get it back to female voice by changing everything in language and input settings and voice search settings to US. It takes a few minutes after u do the changes for the female voice to come back

Yes, I think the default voice for the US is the woman and for the UK the man. All other countries get the robot voice, but will hopefully be updated soon.
The thing is, the UK female voice from ICS was clearer and more legible than either the US female voice or the UK male voice on JB. And I liked the way it sounded kind of mean, and the haughty way it said "The Tor Net-wuuurk". Or maybe I should just get out more...

Hi guys,
I can't make calls by Voice Dialing with this phone.
I tried the voice dialer available in froyo, but even though the settings are offering "french", it works only with english sentences, and it requires confirmation on the screen.
Is it me or something is going wrong with that android stuff ?
thx.
You mean you can't dial someone and call them? Or that voice dialing doesn't work?

i think he means he cant call someone hands free, because voice dialer wont understand his french, and when he gets it to work in english it requires confirmation on the screen
exactly what I meant !
To answer your question - it is a phone. You can dial and make a call on it.
The issue you have is voice dialing, which isn't a feature every phone has and so isn't something the category of 'phone' comes under. The issue you've got is down to Google, even English UK isn't recognised properly...they'll sort it eventually
Here in Canada like in many other countries, it is prohibited to drive car and use a cell phone without an hands-free device, all the phones I used in the last 6-7 years were having full hands-free support .....
But not all phones have voice dialing. You'd still need to 'dial' to get a call, even though you have a hands-free kit of bluetooth headset.
It's illegal in the UK to use a phone whilst driving but I still do (if I absolutely have to, which is rare)
My previous phone, an LG8700 was doing that very well, completly hands-free with my bluettoth headset, and it was not a "smart-phone" ;-)

And you drive through red lights if "absolutely have to" ?
hi hi hi
bottom line, it does not make sense to me that a supposed "smart phone" not being able to do something "dumb phones" have been able to do for a decade !!!
Things could be simpler if there was a green "Call" button on Desire...
MrUsta:
If you want these buttons aim for WM or LG.
demercie:
Dumb phones don't have 1ghz processors so they recognize it much worser. And most of them can't connect to 3g, and none of them enhances voice detection through 3g.
And because you really need this function try finding older versions of the app and appeal on Google to fix this issue. No worries if it's not fixed in a month there's gotta be some bloody big problem.
Dany0,
To make a voice call, you need to press a button to activate the voice call. A dedicated "call" button could help here. For example, I have a trouble to initiate a voice call in a car using Parrot handsfree car kit (no proble to accept incoming calls though).

If you do , for ANY reason do that ;p the only smart thing about you is your phone ;p
I haven't seen this mentioned but has anybody been able to use a BT headset to make, receive, and control calls? I can't. I get "this feature isn't supported on the connected phone" from my Blueant Q2. I know this was an issue with the Sensation and tried installing the voicedialer.apk but the phone won't allow it to be installed. I installed Vlingo but it crashes the phone and I have to do a reset to get it back. Thoughts? Experiences?
Update. We're apparently screwed. There's no native voice dialer included in ICS. I found one that installs but it loses its connection with the headset as soon as it starts. The folks on the Vivid forum are having the same issue. I tried the apps they discussed but they didn't work either. So I guess we wait for HTC to do something.

Yes... ish
I posted the same question a few days ago, but I got no reply, so I bought the phone anyway and tried. Vlingo sort of works with my jawbone earpiece. What I do not like at all is the fact that it does not confirm the command before dialling, or at least I did not figure out how to set it up properly, with the result of dialing the wrong contact in case of a misunderstanding.
I am really missing the simplicity of the blackberry voice dialler, amongst other things (mostly due, I guess, to my being a newbie with android). It was a no-brainer, whilst all the solutions I have seen for android are slightly more cumbersome.
Thanks to the other thread you linked I think I am going to try cyberon voice commander. I could save a couple of dollars/euros buying their voice dialler, but as far as I can see it needs training to attach voice tags to contacts. I don't like the idea of spending time to do that.
This seems like such a basic feature these days, why the hell hasn't it got it?!!!
this is very disappointing news. all the reviews i looked at mentioned voice dialing as a feature. and i just ordered a blueant q2. just tried using voice dial on my phone menu. awful.
i found a retail site online that says the blueant q2 is not compatible with the htc one x and identified several other bluetooth items (including blueant) that are. i decided to try the jawbone era and have it on order. not as many desirable (to me) features as the q2, but if it works, it will be a step up from nothing.
online site is htcpediadotcom. i don't know how reliable it is; first time i've looked at it.
I only just noticed yesterday that the phone would not send the bluetooth connection to the head unit in my car, even though it was connected to it.
I had to use the phones loudspeaker....
All of the Android phones in the past 2 years have worked fine!
I ran into a very strange issue yesterday while using my phone for navigation. I was driving from Rockville, MD to Crofton, MD and along the way my phone decided to use three different text to speech voices to speak the directions. One was the standard female voice I was used to, the second was another female voice but with a more artificial sound, and then third was a male voice with an English accent that I've never heard before. The weirdest part was that they would sometimes take turns giving the directions; a female voice would start saying "Take exit 13B" and then the male voice would come in with "for Maryland 3 North, Crofton." Often times one of the voices would complete a full instruction, but then it would be a different voice for the next instruction. I had the same issue this morning with navigating to the Baltimore airport, so at least I know I wasn't just going crazy from the heat.
I guess this isn't much of an issue - actually kind of entertaining - but I was wondering if anyone else has run into this. I've got an unlocked Asian version of the HOX on version 1.29.707.11 and I'm using it on AT&T. I guess the one downside is that the male voice is harder for me to hear than the female voices, so I would like to keep one of those at all times - like it was on my Nexus One. Any thoughts?
Your phone needs immediate psychiatric help. It's clearly a schizophrenic.
This is a new one by me. Have you tried clearing data in Google maps?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I have an unlocked Asian One X as well and I experienced the same thing...I used Google Navigation for the first time on my phone over the weekend...I got the male voice calling out the directions then the next direction the female voice would call it out....I went WTF??? but it got to my destination so it was no biggie
As you said monkeyboy0076 its entertaining just as long it doesn't make me go around in circles
Man, that's crazy. I cleared out my Google Maps data but haven't used the navigation yet. I'll be taking a trip this weekend so I'll have a chance to try it out then.
I had the same issue on my trip this weekend, so I'm not sure what else to do. I also am experiencing the low navigation volume issue as described in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1707967. Is there something wrong with the version of Navigation on the One X?
This can be fixed. Change the text-to-speech language manually in the normal Android settings menu. I have always had this problem with my HD2 running CM7. If I forget to set it to UK English after a re-flash, it will randomly break into American English at certain waypoints during navigation.
Edit: Except, with the latest version of Maps, my HD2 is forced to use a very harsh american voice that is different from the text-to-speech settings I use (Pico TTS). So er, there may be an issue with the latest Maps too.
I haven't got my One X back from repair yet, so I can't check that.
I want the british guy instead of the lady on Google Now and in Navigation, but even though I set it for English (UK) in general settings and Google Now settings, it still won't change! I've restarted the device several times with no luck. On my Nexus 7, the UK guy works in Navigation only with a data connection, otherwise it is still that lady
Any ideas?
Also, kinda unrelated, is there an apk for the 4.0 / 4.1 tts voices for older devices?
Bump.
Can anyone get the US lady to change to the UK guy for tts in Google Now or Navigation? The stock UK guy, not some third party tts engine.
I can't help, but I am having the same problem on two VZW Galaxy S 3s. I try to switch to the male Google UK English voice but most of the time (but interestingly, not ALL the time), the female American English voice plays instead. More bizarre: sometimes, the female voice will slow down (the voice engine allows different speaking rates) mid-sentence, resulting in it going from bright happy feminine words to creepy masculine monster words right in the middle of a phrase.
Turn right ONTO LENIOR street!
Sorry for posting here, but for some reason I cannot find an active 2 topic.
I only recently got my active 2 and the default voice is a female for both the system and when doing workouts. However at some stage I was playing around with the settings and somehow changed the system voice (temporaraly) to US male. And I did manage to turn the system voice back the the female. However the workout voice is now US male and I cannot seem to find the place to change it back. Has anybody else had this happen to them? Or know how to fix it?
