Use search, this has been awnsered many times before in this forum

You have to unlock your bootloader to flash Jelly Bean if you do not have Takju IMM30D, Takju IMM30D should get automatically the OTA update to JB.

If you're locked, you have to unlock (which wipes) to flash the JB image.
Just wait for the OTA.

Problem with "search for the answer" replies...
"search is temporarily disabled at this time"
I have been getting that message a lot lately... and it lasts for hours sometimes.
But the answer as others have said is... no, you must unlock and wipe.
Use a tool like Titanium backup, it makes wipes less of a pain. Do not backup system apps unless you are flashing a ROM that is similar, like updates to the ROM you are using, or one that has only minimal differences. For switching to JB... just back up user apps.

Problem being he must have root to use TiBu, which requires he unlocks the bootloader .

I tested it once and it worked...

But he said its from the play store... meaning takju... from what I read the takju can unlock the bootloader and it will not wipe lucky

Only works on 4.0.2. No exploit for 4.0.4.

True, but many just attempt XDA internal search.

It seemed to me in those threads that there were still people getting wipes when unlocking. Hasn't really been brought up recently though. And we still don't really know why it doesn't wipe.

I hate how u ppl ask these questions when it's pretty obvious this can't be don't without even being unlocked. Just get the Wug's toolkit and unlock and root. Done and forever free from the cage.

Quick question

Is it possible to unlock the bootloader/root the GN on the stock rom, I know this can be done, however, will it cause any problems without a custom rom?
Yes it is possible. No it will not cause problems.

It will wipe your phone.
Sdcard partition too.
It'll wipe your phone, and if you change anything more than just rooting, you can't automatically update with an OTA.

So I'll need to reflash the stock rom? From my understanding only user data gets deleted.

No your rom will be fine and yes its just user data, ALL user data.
Photos music etc!
But ya the rom will be fine!!
Since there's no 'SDCard' on the GNex, all your user data + pics + files + anything non-ROM will be wiped. What you will get after bootloader unlock will be the same as when you first turned your phone on.
Of course, this is IF you didn't buy your phone off Google Play. There are rumors that Google Play phones don't delete user data when bootloader unlocked.
Either way, here are the steps:
(1) use an exploit to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader
(2) use backup tools to save your apps + data + user data off the phone
(3) unlock the bootloader
(4) root the phone (again, with the same exploit in step 1)
(5) restore your phone from the backups you made in step 2
*NOTE* - you will still get OTA updates even after you've done the above steps, but you will probably lose root after each OTA update and will have to wait for a new exploit, if any, before you can root again.

Ahh..I see.
So once I'm rooted and do the OTA updates....does the root stay? Or I have to re-root it?

You have to re-root or use OTA root keeper from the play store.

doesnt work on 4.0.4, only 4.0.2 i believe.
Wipe happens when you unlock your bootloader (which you have to do to flash root), and you can't unlock without wiping.

You can back up your stuff via adb, unlock (wipe), and then restore via adb. It'll take a while, but it will be like it was never wiped.

As was mentioned before:
a) if you are on 4.0.2 or 4.0.1, follow the instructions here to root. Then you can flash CWM, backup via that, and then unlock your bootloader.
b) if you are 4.0.4, follow the instructions here to backup, then unlock your bootloader by following the instructions here (you do not need to do steps 5-13 under part D if you only want to unlock your bootloader), and root by following part E in the same post.

Should I relock bootloader after root?

I have unlocked my gnex and rooted it.And then should I relock it?is there any difference whether relock it or not?thanks in advance
No difference just keep it open because if you ever have to reflash recovery or something you'll have to re unlock and that will wipe all data.

The Play Store bought Galaxy Nexus doesn't even wipe when unlocking the bootloader, so there is no reason to bother relocking if that's what you have.

Agreed, but multiple users have reported this. I'm rather curious what's going on with those play store devices. It's hard to believe Google deliberately removed a crucial security feature. If unlocking the bootloader does not wipe userdata, everybody who's not using encryption is basically facing a security risk.

I was unaware, haven't been following the GNex forums for awhile. Seems like this could be a security issue...
My purpose to root is limited to supersu on the stock rom and xposed framework if possible. I do not want to flash any custom rom.
Is it possible to keep all DRM related functionalities with stock rom + root, with this method?

[Q] My Gnex wont update! its stuck at 4.1.1 (not rooted)

im having troubles updating my galaxy nexus. his android version is stuck on 4.1.1 and thats makes me a dad panda :`(
my build number is: JRO03C.I9250XWLH2
I tried to wipe it and then update but that didnt help.
also tried to follow this guide: "How to force get 4.1.2 JellyBean on Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus! NO ROOT!" on youtube.
didnt help either.
please help me, im close to giving up :`(
you do not have a yakju or takju firmware. 4.2 has not been released for your version yet (yakjuxw)
the only way to get 4.2 right now is to flash the google images using fastboot.

You need to clear data "Google Framework Services"
Then check for updates, you should see 4.1.2

Bad idea. Next update might fail from left over stuff from root or a mod...then you are done.

The solution (I think) would be to wipe data and flash the entire stock image for your phone, then re-lock the bootloader. This will make sure that any folders/files pertaining to being rooted are gone and shouldn't cause any problems when it comes to validating your OS. Just make sure you properly unrooted SU by using their uninstaller/unroot tool before wiping and reflashing.

Out of curiosity, why do you even wish to lock the bootloader? Especially with the numerous horror stories of users unable to resurrect a bootlooping device (rather simple to fix if unlocked) because their bootloader is locked.

Just an FYI, here's someone that locked their bl. Only 2 reasons I can see this as necessary is RMA, and Android pay. And Android pay works with magisk, so really only one reason. Just be sure to know what you're doing. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/help/pixel-xl-bricked-bootloader-locked-t3698638/page2
