I switched over to jelly bean almost a soon as it became available without doing a wipe and noticed that the first time I started my phone, it presented me with the slide Lockscreen followed by my actual pattern Lockscreen, which I remember was an option on CM9. However, when I go to the security options in JB, I can't replicate that initial behavior (Slide -> pattern). Does anyone know if this is possible somehow in JB, out will I have to wait for ROMs to bring that feature?

LMAO.
That just means you didn't wipe your data...so your previous settings attempted to merge over.
This will cause MUCH more than the little bug that you noticed.
You're going to see FC's...reboots...etc.
Look into properly installing a rom.
Especially when moving from one version of android to another.
Post two in my guide has info on doing so.
Wow. Android 4.0.4 custom rom --> Android 4.1 different custom rom with no wiping whatsoever? You are very brave OP! I could never do that (or deal with the possible consequences that may occur).

only I wiped to stock 4.0.4 before moving to Jellybean. nice assumptions there. Go patronize someone else. I've had Jellybean since the day it became available, and I haven't had one problem, thank you very much.
So, can anyone with a legitimate answer chime in?
Features from custom ROMs do not transfer over. When the JB source is released, CM10 will probably have the feature, for now you will have to do with stock JB features.

You didn't wipe completely or properly if you were prompted for your PIN on a "fresh" install of a ROM.
I'm not sure he really did anything wrong. I came from a stock ICS (4.0.4) ROM as well and went straight to JB (4.1.1) and experienced the same thing just a few minutes ago. I got super excited thinking that I had the slide > pattern back without having to use a custom ROM.
Device: GSM GNEX (from google play), flashed XXLF1 baseband and XXLF1 (JB, 4.1.1) RIL using GetRIL. Unlocked and Rooted per the instructions in this thread.
ICS ROM I was running downloaded from; https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#takju
JB ROM I am currently running from downloaded from; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20843237 (takju JRO03C from IMM76I)
Per the instructions from efrant's 1st post here, a wipe is not required if coming from a stock ROM. Which apparently is functioning fine for both the OP and myself. I suppose it's too soon to really say I won't have an issue since I performed the upgrade so recently, but based on efrant's post with instructions I don't foresee any issues.

I just got this phone (Samsung Galaxy S2, Epic 4G Touch) a few months ago. I'm tired of waiting for ICS to come out. I already know that I have a hard brick bug chip (from running the checker app someone here made). I think here are all of my options:
1. Install a leaked ICS ROM. Can I be safe from bricking if I do it right?
2. Install Cyanogenmod ICS. Am I safe here?
3. Wait for ICS or Jelly Bean to be released from Sprint for my phone. How long will that take??
What I want:
1. ICS
2. Better battery life: is this a kernel or ROM thing?
3. Candied Bacon

I would wait, supposedly ICS is rumored to roll out by Samsung on the 20th, so I wouldn't risk it...But, if you insist, I would personally go with Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6, just make sure to flash it correctly (I recommend Flash EL26, then Cyanogen in its CWM recovery) Just make sure you read through the bug list in Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6 first to make sure that everything you need is working. Honestly though, I would just wait for the update by Samsung if you want to play it safe.

Thanks guys. I've been googling articles on the release date for months and finally when I decide to ask here, it's out. :silly: Can't wait to get the update, hope I get it soon. Thanks!
You can wait for the offical ota update. but just because it started today doesn't mean you'll get it today or tomorrow. I know I had to wait a week with my old epic 4g(not touch). you can look thru the different roms to see which one would fit your needs better. If you odin the leaked FF18 version you will be safe. Battery life mostly depends on how you use your phone and what settings you have. when i was running GB i had mine undervolted, sync turned off and screen brightness turned way down. The biggest thing about flashing ICS roms is follow the OP's instuctions. Since we now have the new ICS kernel (from source code) flashing ICS to ICS should be safe. but I can't say for sure i haven't tried it yet.

Candied bacon is bacon cooked with brown sugar on it.
Would me installing an FF18 today be any different than the one to be pushed out later? Does Cyanogenmod have FF18 for my phone? Or is that not how Cyanogenmod works..
So a ROM is specific to a phone, and a kernel is specific to a ROM, but is a kernel specific to a ROM for a phone, or is a kernel specific to any phones's version of a ROM? S*** just got confusing..
If I use Sprint's pushed ROM, will I become unrooted? Do new ROMs come with new accompanying kernels?
Ugh I'm so confused.

Yes! If you use sfhub's One-Clicks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229 you will have FF18 AND root. If you update the OTA you will lose ROOT.

Yes there is a CM9 for this phone (right now on Alpha 6). IF you plan on flashing that make absolutely sure you follow the precise instructions or you will surely paper weight your phone! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563658

Thanks for your help! I'll be sure to browse the stickies around here.
So what do you suggest to me? Installing Cyanogenmod 9 A6, or a rooted FF18? Also, will I be able to keep all of my data when installing these?
edit: It looks like both options will reset my data. I was really hoping to avoid that. I'm wondering how to save data from things like certain games...
edit2: Also, I am wondering if I can customize my boot up screen with Cyanogenmod, because SAMSUNG doesn't allow you to do it with their dumb custom boot animation format. I havn't seen anything about being able to do it with C9 on a phone with Samsung's custom boot anim format.
If you use sfhub's one click 'no data' it will preserver your data and give you FF18 plus root.
Since you are just starting out that is what I would recommend. It will give root, keep your data and the latest modem and everything (stock) Touch Wiz
If you want CWM you can use Mobile Odin [ https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro&hl=en ] to add Agat's latest safe recovery found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 One of the best paid apps around if you plan on doing any modding. Watch the tutorial and read how to use it. Pretty simple. Again take the time and read through the entire posts. Many times questinon you are going to ask (or will come up with soon enough) will be answered.

Thanks, I'll install sfhub's NODATA. Now I'm wondering whether to give my brother the stock install or to root his... He has the same phone.
You can also download titanium backup or my backup. Both are in the market. I use it to back up all my apps. There are other programs to backup SMS and call logs. Sometimes you can have issues with not wiping the data.

You really can't go wrong with sfhub's one-clicks. They are essentially OTAs (released to development) that sfhub as added root to and made them unbelievably simple to use. And since the Sprint OTA build is FF18 your good to go. Just don't take the OTA if you are presented with it as you'll lose root.
With root you will be able to use some great tools (Titanium Backup, Mobile Odin, WiFi tether etc.) and be able to remove loads of carrier 'bloatware'.
I'd start that way and read up on using CWM and the different tools and options here.
I flashed ICS, but personally I wish I had stayed on GB for a little while longer. ICS is going out over the air today, and it would be nice to allow the devs a little more time with it. I recommend Calkulins latest GB ROM.
Personally, I recommend MIJJz ICS. There's a couple of versions to meet your needs. I use "Goodness" which has all the bells and whistles. I imagine with the official ICS release coming out that he'll be updating his ICS Roms soon, especially Goodness. If you try it out, let us know what you think.

I just purchased a Sprint Galaxy S3 on PP on Ebay and everything is working as expected. However, I don't quite like the ROM that is on it (the theme is too dark). I'd like to flash another ROM on the phone. But I'm afraid if I do that then my PP number will stop working on this phone. I was wondering what is a safe way to switch a ROM. (I want something like a stock android ROM actually, don't care much for TouchWiz crap). Suggestions on ROM with instructions on how to do it while still being on Page Plus would be great. Thanks.

Flashing does not change your carrier, it only changes your OS because this information is stored in the NVRAM.
There havent been any reports of people's phone numbers disappearing after flashing roms right?
But anyway, you should be good for any kernels too, the only thing you have to be careful with is the PRL's that you may see posted because those ARE carrier specific and flashing one that isn't for your carrier/carrier type might just break roaming
Also if you want a more stock Android feel, go for any rom that has "[AOSP]" in the title, or go to CM's official S3 page and checkout those roms too, theyre pure bare bones android

I wouldn't go as far as to say it can never happen. As a matter of fact on the sprint note 2 there's been several times when NVdata has become corrupted after flashing a rom which required master resetting and reprovisioning. It happened to me over xmas. Its rare, but it can happen.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Well doing a master reset is a totallyyyy different thing from just flashing a zip thats a rom
Sent from my PG06100
Could someone tell me what a "Master Reset" is? I'd like to avoid doing that, so that I don't have to deal with this. The way I understand it, if I flash a RAM after I wipe the cache/data/etc, I should be fine?
Thanks CNexus and -EVil-KoNCEPTz-
No the master reset bit was him talking about another phone which was an exception to the "flashing a rom on a flashed carrier is always ok"
But you're almost correct, what you need to do when flashing a rom is wipe data, format system, and then wipe cache (dont forget the format system because thats where the actual OS gets installed and files can get left behind if you dont)
Also, try to avoid restoring app data after flashing a new rom if you can. I've seen weird issues pop up and it almost always comes down to a bad flash, an improper wipe, or data was restored
One last thing, if you're new to android I would highly recommend checking out xda-university.com. Its aimed at teaching people about android, whether you want to become familiar with it as a user, as a developer, or as a themer. Very well written and easy to understand articles on many topics

Thanks, your responses have been very helpful.
I'm taking a leap of faith and flashing the latest stable CM rom. Hope things work after that!
I assume Updating PRL or Updating other things in the update menu is a terrible idea. What can or can I not safely update. How can I disable the whole menu if updating isn't ok (so that it doesn't accidentally happen).
EDIT: The flash worked great and everything seems to be working fine. The ROM is very bare, and now I am searching for the zip file that would give me Google Play.
Well, on a CM it wont do anything anyway, because its not implemented
As for what you can or can't update, I believe all those updates will come from PagePlus since you flashed. However, dont quote me on this, try searching around for Boost users, or people on other carriers and ask if they can update their settings correctly through the Updates menu, and if they can than you can too. I am fairly sure its ok though

I have searched via various keywords for days and have not found an answer to my problem yet. I have only run across one other post (on another forum) that describes exactly my issue and they are asking the exact same question I have with no response.
I am using the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3. I have downloaded CM 10.0.0 stable d2att on several occasions (different computers even), verified the md5, and installed on my phone. I have used CWM, CWM Touch, and TWRP to install hoping it was an issue there. Regardless of what I have done, I have the same issue addressed below:
I make or receive a phone call. No problems answering a phone call when it comes in. However when I hang up, the screen immediately goes back to sleep (which seems to be normal for the Nexus after researching). However, if I press the power button after the call is ended, the screen does not turn on at all. The hardware buttons (menu and back) do light up however and they remain lit. Regardless of what I do my phone stays stuck in this mode unless I hold the power button for about 10 seconds or so and force it to reboot, at which point it operates normal with no issues until my next phone call.
Has anyone experienced this issue and if so did you find a way to resolve it that does not require rebooting the phone? Right now this is the only thing keeping me from using the ROM as my daily driver.
Imo, AOSP-based ROMs run best when coming from stock. I flash back to touchwiz the before flashing them. Not sure if you've tried this.
Also, I had some small issues with the exact same rom that kept me from making it my daily driver. If you want stability, I can vouch for AOKP 4.1.2. I'm in no hurry for 4.2 with this rom running so well with no bugs or glitches

I don't think it matters but I usually restore my tw/stock nandroid because it's right there and I don't lose root.
When I flashed the rom im currently running, I formatted /system /data and battery. Not sure if you care or need that info, just passing it on as this device has run really well for me on this OS.
I also flashed the Nexus 4 camera/gallery and the TW clock. The aokp camera is lame-o, and controlling the alarms is easier on the TW clock.
If you can't find them on the forum here (where I got them), PM me your email and I will send you the zips if you are interested. I believe I flashed them both in cwm, wiped cache/dalvik and then adjusted permissions in root browser to rw-r-r
AOKP's 4.1.2 jellybean milestone 1 is still on goo.im

Hello.
Recently I've upgraded my Android version to 4.2.1 on my Gnex and since then I've experienced many problems regarding Wi-Fi and lag. The problem with the Wi-Fi is that looses connectivity when in standby even if the rooter has no problem. There are some times when I loose Wi-Fi connectivity even when I use my phone. On the other hand, it became laggy, taking forever to open an application.
My question is: what would you suggest me to make my phone better/faster? hard-factory-resetting my phone, or installing a new version of Android, with custom ROMs and other things?
I am new to this community and I don't really know how to reset my phone to the factory Android version.
Thank you.
From my understanding, there isn't a fix. I have a Gnexus on 4.2.2 and get the same issue a lot.
My belief is its a problem with jb itself
To fix the slowness, either update to 4.3 or install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix and run it regularly.

Thank you very much for your advice.
Using efrant's excellent guide, I've managed to update my Android to 4.3 and rooted it.
Recently I've seen the Paranoid Android custom ROM, and I really liked it. What I wanted to ask you: is it good? I mean, when it comes to device's speed, extra options, etc.
I really wanted to install that ROM, but from what I've seen from their thread, in the matter of installation, it's kinda blurry.
Help?

Paranoid Android is still in its early 4.3 development stages so it will have bugs and hiccups. I flashed it and noticed it's not up to speed as stock 4.3 so I reverted. If you don't mind the bugs and hiccups, go for it.
As for flashing it:
-Be on the latest TWRP or CWM recovery
-Wipe everything (Factory reset, cache, dalvik)
-Install ROM and then install the PA GAPPS
-Reboot

Hi. I have a new "problem" with my Gnex.
From the past few days a notification came, which tells me to update to Android 4.3, even though I have installed it few weeks ago. It won't dissapear, no matter what I do.
Should I update to their "version", or should I ignore it?

It is fix for a security issue, and it stays on 4.3. You can just disable notifications for the app which checks for updates(I forgot the name of it).

Hello,
I've read through the Everything thread on Development, as well as searched using the xda search and google site search, but come up with nothing.
The Everything thread mentions that the current version of CWRM won't charge when the phone is off or in recovery, but I can't find anything about which version is the 'latest' (6.0.1.2, 5.0.2.7), nor if this also affects the TWRP recoveries (2.6.3, 2.4.1)? For that matter, I can't find anything that even mentions the charging problems at all aside from the Everything thread!
If there is a charging problem with all of the third party ROMs, is there a method to go back to the stock recovery after flashing in a ROM and backing up /efs/? I'm basically shooting for a fully functional phone and I don't plan on changing ROMs all over the place, just root and ICS.
Help?
Thanks!

If there is a charging problem with all of the third party ROMs, is there a method to go back to the stock recovery after flashing in a ROM and backing up /efs/? I'm basically shooting for a fully functional phone and I don't plan on changing ROMs all over the place, just root and ICS.
Help?
Thanks!

I think something like 6.0.4 the latest CWMR. ( you can build with http://builder.clockworkmod.com/ , Existing Device option doesnt work)
It charges in latest TWRP, you can see "+" char when on charge next to the battery level.
Stock uses recovery for official upgrade, and factory reset. We have only offline charge issue, but recovery has no effect on it. Offline charger works with a limitation. I wouldnt bother you with the explanation, since you said you would like to use stock ICS.
You can backup efs in rooted rom without recovery. You can always flash recovery with odin phone in download mode.
Thanks.
I guess I had assumed the comment was referring to the builds in the Development forum, not the overall CWMR project! Is there a currently recommended recovery, or is it a toss up to personal preference? I'm not so much tied to ICS as tied to a completely working ROM - especially as I see all the bluetooth and skype issues with the JB ROMs, which (as far as I can tell) are still unresolved / unknown?

I make TWRP for i927, we dont have other up to date, but you can build yourself.
Dont you have issue with stock ICS? I made up to date issue list in me CM 10.2, you could decide it suit for you or not, you may know stock limitation already.
I hope voip issue would be resolved soon.

My only real requirement in a phone is that it be reliable - I don't want to have to pop out batteries or have no audio on calls if I get stranded in the middle of nowhere. At this point, my phone is still in the mail - got a used one from a friend, but it hasn't arrived, so I haven't had much ability to experiment yet.
My Android experience is exclusively with a Transformer TF101, which had 4.0.4 ICS stock and is currently running Katkiss JB 4.2.2_226 (Katkiss 4.3 isn't stable enough for me yet, was getting daily crashes last time I tried). All of the phone components are new to me - and the Glide seems to have a more fragmented recovery scene than the TF101, which is pretty much TWRP or nothin'
Thanks again for your help!
