SD card reverts to unallocated space after a while - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a new Kingmax microsd, 16 gb, class 10. After receiving it I did an error search and found none. I then installed Sandvold's ICS v0.5.0.1 from his thread and after a while every app crashed and the phone reboots and never returns to normal meaning it continually boots (not a bootloop, it just keeps loading forever not finding the sd card). When I go into recovery (4ext recovery touch) it tells me it can't mount the sd card and then the recovery boots without the sd. When I take out the sd card and put it in my laptop I see that the whole sd card has lost all partitions ( the first one FAT32 of 13 gb, the second one ext4 of 1gb and the swap of 256) and has becomed unallocated. This has happened 3 times (twice after installing the above mentioned ROM and one time without any ROM installed- just rebooted recovery after formatting the sd according to how I said before). I would like to know if the problem is with the sd card or my phones hardware. Thank you for helping me.

Use Minitool partition wizard. There's a partition recovery function. Or format into fat32 via computer, then boot into recovery and allocate your SD.
Good luck!

minitool doesnt partition ur sdcard very good. best way is to partition with 4ext recovery or gparted
Sent from my HTC Desire

I partitioned my card with 4ext recovery (before that I also tried doing it with minitool but didn't work that well). The problem, as i see it, is that at some point for some unknown reason to me, all partitions vanish, so android no longer sees my sd card, everything crashes and the phone reboots and loads forever (because it no longer senses my sd). When I enter recovery afterwards, the recovery says it can't mount the SD card. When I insert it in my PC I notice that all partitions are gone and all the space on it is unallocated. Maybe now I have explained things a little better. What is it that wipes everything like that living the sd with unallocated space?

i really dont know but if it were me i would try partitioning my sdcard (with 4ext) to ALL fat32 (no ext4 or swap) and see if recovery recognises it.

i was just having a read at some post on sandvolds ics thread and it seems to be full of issuses. I'm at about 48 h since my last install and things are ok. Just a minor indigestion last night but nothing serious and completely unrelated to this thread.

It happened again. This time 7 days after the last install... I'm beginning to think the sd is broken.

Un-partitioning SD card?

Hi guys,
I couldn't find anything about this (I did try searching before posting this thread, so I hope I am not repeating a common question!).... I wish to unpartition my sd card and just go back to a normal fat32 partition....
So far I have tired windows disk management and Rom Manager, which just allows you to ADD a ext partition with no luck!
Can anyone else guide me how to achieve this?
Regards!

System recover? clockworkmod using the fake flash method? because I don't see the Partition SD Card menu anywhere else and i've tried both!
I know its right in front of me somewhere, I just can't see it, D'oh!
use the one from rooting folder
Bah,
I ended up using GPart live cd to undo it!!
Thanks for the responses guys, hopefully this will help someone else who needs it!

That's fine, it's why I created the thread!
If you just want to partition you can use ROM Manager (but this requires root)
you need the recovery file (entitled 'pushfiles' or something) from the risk-free root package to partition/un-partition the card.
Else, you can use a GPart live CD, which makes it really easy!
Hope that helps buddy...

If you're using a2sd+ then you need to change your ext2 partition to ext3, Also, I don't believe that you need a swap partition anymore...
Try that!

Anywhooo, I have another question, so I think i'll hijack my own thread!
Guys, whats the most efficient way to backup/restore and move apps between roms? I've ended up manually re-installing installed apps 2/3 times now, I was going between roms that did/didn't support a2sd. Also, should there be any consideration to any specific backup options available in the various tools?
Thanks in advance!

Without SDcard it starts loading the system but the loading is a never ending loop.

I would say, firstly try to get your phone working by wiping it clean and re flashing the rom. Use a different memory card just to get up and running. Then you can concentrate on fixing you card..
Although that seems like a very strange issue, are you sure you formatted your card correctly with GPart? (eg, exactly 512 MB/1024MB?) I'm a n00b myself so I would also wait for some of the more experienced users to offer their input. lol

Boot loop problem with RCMix HD

Hi peeps, after a couple of days trying to get a custom ROM going i finaly cracked it.Worked round the partition problem and got Mix HD ROM running. It starts up just fine but restarts after 4 or 5 mins and keeps looping.I cleared storage in recovery and formated the SD from clockwork mod.And all goes according to plan then random reboots.Any help as to why this is happening?.Bit of a noob so be gentle with me lol.
You should post this question in the according threat.
I had the same problem but after some searching I found out the problem likely lies at the kernel.
so try flashing the older b33 kernel (link in first post of the rom)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
thanx for the speedy reply, sorry about the post position.Got the kernel how is it flashed?.Through recovery like the ROM or is it done differently?.
same way like a rom.
So copy it to the root of the card and flash from recovery or clockwork mod?.Dont remember seeing anything in either about kernels?.Sorry for sounding desperate but i'm so close lol.
Just go to clockwork recovery and choose flash zip from SD and then navigate to the kernel zip file. If you got a error like me that the zip isn't signed just disable the sign verification and try again
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Hi back again, just to say thanks to all that helped me on the road to rooted goodness lol.Flashing the kernel seems to have cured the boot loop problem. Now im off to see how i can add little extras to make my device my own.Cheers
Sorry back again just plugged my phone into my PC and it said i needed to format the drive (SD card i take it) so i did as there was nothing on it anyway but now when i plug it in it can see it but only lists it as 999MB, just so happens o be the same size as the partition i made with liveCD.Any ideas whats going on there or have i limited the size of my card by mistake?.How would i put that right?.Without wrecking my newly ROMed phone. The phone however still sees 6.68 GB.
How big did you made your ext3 partition? Did you do it with gparted? If so use gparted to check if the partitions on your SD are right (500/1000 mb ext3 partition and the rest fat32)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Well thats what LiveCD says i've got but when i plug it into windows it just wants to format the 1GB, surely it should want to do that with whats left at FAT32 right. The extension will format in recovery but the SD card wont. Doin my head in
Where did you create the ext partition on the disk?
If you created the ext partition before the fat32 partition windows wont recognize the disk and hence will want to format it to fat(default).

Partitioning Sd Card Problem

Hi,
I partitioned sd-card with several ways but my htc desire does not see the ext2/ext3 partitions.
the configuration is that
ClockWork recovery 2.5.0.7
CyanogenMod-7 for Desire GSM V7.0.0-RC1
16 GB Class 4 Toshiba micro sdcard
latest try to partition sd card is now : 13,91 fat32 primary
1024 ext2 primary - tried also ext3
My Htc desire shows me as : sd card Total space : 13,91 GB
internal storage Total space : 148 MB
the ways that I used:
-Gparted-Live - success to partitioning
-Pmagic 5.10 - success to partitioning
-sdsplit with android terminal : - unsuccessful to partitioning
the file exist but when I try : - &su
- #/data/sdsplit -nd -fs 14350M
it says me : the file not found
-MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition - success to partitioning
-I tried also flashing ClockWork recovery to amon-ra 2.0 with unveroked 3.2 for partitioning sd card but it says me "error: failed to get root. ıs your firmware too new?" - unsuccessful
What should I do?
Please help?
Your internal memory does not charge when using a ext partition/a2sd. So how do you know it's not working.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I have AppsToSd tool installed and it always says me "it looks like your SD card isn't partitioned correctly..."
I do not know an other way if it's working...
That tool does not use the same a2sd solution, it uses the stock froyo one. You wouldn't need that tool if you were running a rom with a2sd / a2sd+
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
ok,
What should I do so?
and how can I understand it's working?
grab an app called quick system info from the market and in the basic info tab it lists a2sd storage and internal storage.
You'll know its working when you install something and the internal storage doesn't drop by the size of the app you installed.
Also if you use Rom manager from the market (after you're rooted) that can create the next partition for you. Just back up your card first since it wipes it.

this may sound stupid, but it happened to me.. When you create your partitions, are you making the EXT 2/3 first? it MUST be the first partition, wether it is listed as primary or not. I had sooo many fustrations till i figured out you must make the ext2/3 first, then the fat32 or whatever else.
Besides that.. WHY do you need a2sd? if you are using the CM7-RC1.. I'd recommend you use the CM7 HBOOT as well. that gives you a 300mb data which is tons of room.. just a suggestion.
Thank you nismoau,
I see the a2sd storage and it shows me the partition size but I installed some application from sd card and still drop the internal storage size.
what should be wrong?

Internal memory

What actually takes up internal memory as I've only got 3mb of apps on my internal memory according to Install Manager but still only got 3mb free.
I've tried cleaning all the cache but this only frees about 3mb.
Do updates for apps on your sdcard take up internal memory?

If you are not using a custom rom and are not rooted, you only have option is to factory reset phone to default settings. Make sure you back up everything you can first.
Or just Root your phone learn how to install custom Roms with data2ext/data2sd/xd2sdx for more internal storage.
I am rooted and are looking into partitioning but was just wondering how come I have little internal memory when I moved 90% of Apps to my SD card. This was why I had to root.
Seems quite a poor fail on the part of Android. Unless it is because I didn't wipe all that Data before I flashed the custom rom.

Whats happening mate, even tho you have moved apps to sd card not all the file really goes there. Say you download a 20MB app and move it to sd card. 15MB would go there and the other 5MB would stay at real internal filling it up. Plus dalvik cache app data ect.
Partitioning with Gparted and having an ext4 with a RoM that uses data2ext puts your ext4 has internal giving you more space.
Staying with app2sd+ only gives you a little bit more space.
Check my upload and you'll see my internal storage is just under 1gb free.

You should use Gparted for partitioning card. say you have 16GB card first partition sould be fat32=13gb second ext4=2GB 2048MB both set to primary.
To use Gparted you burn it to CD and just boot from the disk, be careful not to format windows drive
I could not get gparted to work on my PC. From VMPlayer or Boot disc. It went so far and then just hung, about 5 times.
If I'm using CWM v4.0.1.4 what partition type am I likely to have as that was what I had to use to partition it through the advanced settings.

CWM makes it ext3.
SwiftKeyed from my HTC Desire using XDA App.
I’ve managed to get GParted to work on a different PC but when I connected my Phone and mounted the USB Card the volume came up as ‘Unallocated’.
I created a Fat32 partition and an Ext3 partition (both primary) and then connected my PC through windows to transfer the Update.zip file to my SDCard.
Then when I went to ‘update zip from sdcard’ in recovery the file didn’t show up.
When I restarted my phone after wiping data (as requested in rom installation guide) the card wasn’t recognized and asked to be reformatted so I did.
Now the card isn’t recognized by gparted. I’ve had a mare with this today (two kids driving me mad contributed to that too though in fair, lol!)
I've got my Fat32 and Ext3 partitions now and have put my recovery files on my SDCard through Windows but cannot get recovery to see my files at all.
Install Zip from SDCard doesnt see my Custom Rom, Restore doesnt see any files and won't even create a backup even though this is a Fat32 partition.
Has anyone else had this. Quite frustrating now.

So you think the problem might be because I didn't unmount the sd card in windows after I'd put the recovery files back on?
I did unmount in cwm recovery via the back key.

4EXT Recovery not formatting sd-ext?

Hi all,
having quite a few problems with 4EXT recovery, and it formatting my sd-ext partitions. I read quite a few thread on here about using 4EXT to correctly partition memory cards, and I recently (tried) upgrading my rather old 8Gb class 4 Transcend micro-sd to a Samsung 32Gb Class 10, and thought I'd do things properly.
I boot into the recovery, hit Tools, Partiton SD Card, hit the tick to say "I'm ok with it destroying my data" remove all partitions, select 1024Mb for first partition, and after that I've tried about 5 different combinations, including skipping both the second partition and the swap, trying two 1Gb partitions for SD-ext and no swap etc etc. It then prompts me to pick EXT3 or EXT4, and I always choose EXT4.
Everytime I do this however, the EXT partition is never formatted, despite it telling me it completed successfully. This means that when I install my rom (MIUI-XJ Data2EXT one) the rom will not boot as it has no EXT partition to write to (I'm presuming as I get no specific error).
Has anyone else had similar problems or can they point me in a direction where I might be going wrong?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help shed some light on a user who is rapidly going grey here lol

I suggest you use the rmd recovery. when the recovery is booted it tells you what partitions you have on the sd card. other than that it is by far the best sd-card formatting recovery i have used. the only better option is gparted i think
i have had similar problems with 4ext and i am not using it anymore
There's no such generally known bug in 4ext. if you're facing issues, I suggest you contact Maximillian with logs. I haven't seen anyone with a greater passion for fixing things.. That's the way you contribute to development-by helping fix any issues.

RMD is crap. There is a huge bug whereby there are issues backing up .android_secure.
We identified this in the thread yet as far as we are aware, has not been addressed. It would be good if not for that bug.

for backup i use cwm
for partitioning, i have used it many times with 1 ext4 partition or 2 ext4 partitions and a swap and such, it has never failed yet. after i partition the card, i go back to cwm, so i have no experience with backups on rmd
Just for partitioning? How odd?! haha
RMD uses SDparted for partitioning so it does not correctly align the partition, which hinders performance.
Gparted is the best way. Not sure how 4EXT works for partitioning but apparently it does not use SDparted and DOES align. Whether thats by scripts or not I dont know.
Anyway Gparted is the best choice for partitioning
Just to check things out as I've read stories about mislabelled micro sd cards being sold before, I just performed a full surface scan on the card, came up clean. Just tried GParted... still no go.
Could there be a problem with the partition sizes I'm choosing?
Do I need 2 ext4 partitions? (I'm assuming yes as I have two on my 8Gb which was partitioned perfectly fine within Clockwork about a year ago; 1 of 1Gb and one of about 70Mb)
Any other software I can use to partition via the PC?
One fat, one EXT
Whats happening in Gparted?
Tell me exactly how you are setting up and what the problem is please.

That's what I thought, one of each.
Gparted says completed fine, but looking in 4EXT Recovery it still says my EXT4 is unformatted and I cannot install my rom
no idea then, other than removing all the partitions then create all from scratch.
Create Fat32 at desired size then format fat 32 as fat 32. Create EXT4 as desired size then format ext4 as ext 4...
Using Gparted you need a Fat32 partition (main partition) followed by an ext3 or ext4 partition (just 1-2gb) Make sure its Fat32 first though.
For some strange reason, possibly drivers, I had trouble with Gparted running through VMware, maybe try making an actually bootable CD or Usb stick. Worked for me.

you can use PARTED MAGIC but its basically Gparted and Parted put together in 1gui.Some other useful tools in it as well.
Also it runs off the computer ram, which is better than a live cd
Well a little update:
I've managed to get ClockWork Mod back on the phone, and it seems my partitions are working correctly now. Just got a bootloop problem now, I'll get there eventually lol
Looks like it's a bad sd card, no matter what I try and do, even if the software I create the ext partition with say successful, once I get it onto my phone it's not there anymore. Will never buy an micro-sd from ebay again.

I wouldn't blame the SD card. The Desire is notoriously awkward where using 32Gb cards are concerned, indeed I'm sure it's been said that it only supports upto 16Gb cards though I suspect some may have gotten 32Gb cards to work. Similarly, class 10 cards are a bit hit and miss with the Desire. It's taken me a couple of attempts to get a working class 10 16Gb card and to be honest there's no noticable speed improvement over my class 4 8Gb and 4Gb cards.

That a fair point, so I thought I'd test it in my mates Sensation XL and another's Galaxy SII (Why do all my friends have much newer, bigger phones than me? ) Anyway... long story short, same kinda problems, ebay seller has been shut down, paypal looking into getting me a refund and I've bought another Lexar 32Gb that was on sale at amazon. Should be the end of my problems, but thanks everyone for the help.
same issue here
Hi guys,
I have the same problem. I have 2 Different cards, 8 and 16GB all Class 10 - I tested them and they have the right speed and they seem to work just fine.
I boot a live Ubuntu 11.10 and run Gparted. I then format (the 8GB card) by the book (fat32 first and 1GB ext4 after, both primary partitions).
My 4EXT 1.0.0.4 RC3 doesn't see the partitioning of the SD Card.
If I format the card using 4EXT, I can install the roms and they run fine for a few days but then EACH ROM (I've tried prolly 10...) starts hanging, and when I turn the phone off, the ROM don't boot anymore... wiping cache + dalvik doesn't help at that point.
I start thinking my Desire has an hardware issue?
thanks
