Internal memory - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What actually takes up internal memory as I've only got 3mb of apps on my internal memory according to Install Manager but still only got 3mb free.
I've tried cleaning all the cache but this only frees about 3mb.
Do updates for apps on your sdcard take up internal memory?

before you flash a new ROM always do a full wipe from mounts & storage
>boot
>system
>data
>cache
>sd-ext
this should free up the memory for you

I didn't do that before I upgraded to the stock Gingerbread Rom, has that caused the problem? If so where do I go from here?

If you are not using a custom rom and are not rooted, you only have option is to factory reset phone to default settings. Make sure you back up everything you can first.
Or just Root your phone learn how to install custom Roms with data2ext/data2sd/xd2sdx for more internal storage.

I am rooted and are looking into partitioning but was just wondering how come I have little internal memory when I moved 90% of Apps to my SD card. This was why I had to root.
Seems quite a poor fail on the part of Android. Unless it is because I didn't wipe all that Data before I flashed the custom rom.

Whats happening mate, even tho you have moved apps to sd card not all the file really goes there. Say you download a 20MB app and move it to sd card. 15MB would go there and the other 5MB would stay at real internal filling it up. Plus dalvik cache app data ect.
Partitioning with Gparted and having an ext4 with a RoM that uses data2ext puts your ext4 has internal giving you more space.
Staying with app2sd+ only gives you a little bit more space.

Check my upload and you'll see my internal storage is just under 1gb free.

If you partitionend your SD card correctly (for your rom), it does not matter how (so with witch recovery/program) you did it.

I have a partition but no idea of what type or how to check which type.

You should use Gparted for partitioning card. say you have 16GB card first partition sould be fat32=13gb second ext4=2GB 2048MB both set to primary.
To use Gparted you burn it to CD and just boot from the disk, be careful not to format windows drive

I could not get gparted to work on my PC. From VMPlayer or Boot disc. It went so far and then just hung, about 5 times.
If I'm using CWM v4.0.1.4 what partition type am I likely to have as that was what I had to use to partition it through the advanced settings.

CWM makes it ext3.
SwiftKeyed from my HTC Desire using XDA App.

I’ve managed to get GParted to work on a different PC but when I connected my Phone and mounted the USB Card the volume came up as ‘Unallocated’.
I created a Fat32 partition and an Ext3 partition (both primary) and then connected my PC through windows to transfer the Update.zip file to my SDCard.
Then when I went to ‘update zip from sdcard’ in recovery the file didn’t show up.
When I restarted my phone after wiping data (as requested in rom installation guide) the card wasn’t recognized and asked to be reformatted so I did.
Now the card isn’t recognized by gparted. I’ve had a mare with this today (two kids driving me mad contributed to that too though in fair, lol!)

I've got my Fat32 and Ext3 partitions now and have put my recovery files on my SDCard through Windows but cannot get recovery to see my files at all.
Install Zip from SDCard doesnt see my Custom Rom, Restore doesnt see any files and won't even create a backup even though this is a Fat32 partition.
Has anyone else had this. Quite frustrating now.

So you think the problem might be because I didn't unmount the sd card in windows after I'd put the recovery files back on?
I did unmount in cwm recovery via the back key.
Is this likely to be the reason and worth going through all the hassle again for?

Un-partitioning SD card?

Hi guys,
I couldn't find anything about this (I did try searching before posting this thread, so I hope I am not repeating a common question!).... I wish to unpartition my sd card and just go back to a normal fat32 partition....
So far I have tired windows disk management and Rom Manager, which just allows you to ADD a ext partition with no luck!
Can anyone else guide me how to achieve this?
Regards!

That's fine, it's why I created the thread!
If you just want to partition you can use ROM Manager (but this requires root)
you need the recovery file (entitled 'pushfiles' or something) from the risk-free root package to partition/un-partition the card.
Else, you can use a GPart live CD, which makes it really easy!
Hope that helps buddy...

Anywhooo, I have another question, so I think i'll hijack my own thread!
Guys, whats the most efficient way to backup/restore and move apps between roms? I've ended up manually re-installing installed apps 2/3 times now, I was going between roms that did/didn't support a2sd. Also, should there be any consideration to any specific backup options available in the various tools?
Thanks in advance!

Without SDcard it starts loading the system but the loading is a never ending loop.
Tried to format SD with fakeflash, dosent help
Tried reflashing my rom with wipe and everything, dosent help

I would say, firstly try to get your phone working by wiping it clean and re flashing the rom. Use a different memory card just to get up and running. Then you can concentrate on fixing you card..
Although that seems like a very strange issue, are you sure you formatted your card correctly with GPart? (eg, exactly 512 MB/1024MB?) I'm a n00b myself so I would also wait for some of the more experienced users to offer their input. lol

Solved it by using AM recovery, repair + new partition solved the problem! Gonna reflash 2.0 again since i messed up the wiping somehow and then keep this until the rooted 2.2 is out!

SD card reverts to unallocated space after a while

I have a new Kingmax microsd, 16 gb, class 10. After receiving it I did an error search and found none. I then installed Sandvold's ICS v0.5.0.1 from his thread and after a while every app crashed and the phone reboots and never returns to normal meaning it continually boots (not a bootloop, it just keeps loading forever not finding the sd card). When I go into recovery (4ext recovery touch) it tells me it can't mount the sd card and then the recovery boots without the sd. When I take out the sd card and put it in my laptop I see that the whole sd card has lost all partitions ( the first one FAT32 of 13 gb, the second one ext4 of 1gb and the swap of 256) and has becomed unallocated. This has happened 3 times (twice after installing the above mentioned ROM and one time without any ROM installed- just rebooted recovery after formatting the sd according to how I said before). I would like to know if the problem is with the sd card or my phones hardware. Thank you for helping me.

minitool doesnt partition ur sdcard very good. best way is to partition with 4ext recovery or gparted
Sent from my HTC Desire
I partitioned my card with 4ext recovery (before that I also tried doing it with minitool but didn't work that well). The problem, as i see it, is that at some point for some unknown reason to me, all partitions vanish, so android no longer sees my sd card, everything crashes and the phone reboots and loads forever (because it no longer senses my sd). When I enter recovery afterwards, the recovery says it can't mount the SD card. When I insert it in my PC I notice that all partitions are gone and all the space on it is unallocated. Maybe now I have explained things a little better. What is it that wipes everything like that living the sd with unallocated space?

[Q] No "partition sdcard"

Hi,
I'm running MildWild V-4.8 on my Desire, and I got a 8 GB class 10 sd-card i would like to partition.
I've been reading a lot about it, but they all seem to use clockworkmod recovery mode "advanced > "partition sdcard". I dont have that option, bc it just doesnt appear on my phone.. what do i do? How could a partition my sd-card and make it a "part of" the internal memory?
Kind regards
Christoffer
Ps. I think i did a fair search of the forum already, but if i've i missed a the answer somewhere then im sorry!
I'm not sure who "they"are, but I use 4ext recovery to partition mine, just boot to recovery and see which you have.
Be aware I'm pretty sure partitioning will erase ALL data on the card!

I tried out the 4ext recovery, but it didnt manage to partition it, so instead i partitioned it (2gb ext3) on my computer following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning.
I then used s2e and selected Applications, Dalvik cache and Download cache before i rebooted.
My phone still says that the internal memory is148 mb? What did i miss ?
NB. I partitioned and used s2e on C7, do I have to re-flash before it will see my sd-card?
Strange that 4 ext didn't work, even though your phone is still reporting limited storage, if things are working as they should add you install apps that should remain roughly the same. Maybe download something to see?

I tried installing it, and i removed rom-manager, but whenever i rebooted i got into clockworkmod recovery, which does not give me the option of partition the sd-card.
I will try using gparted instead, but my question still remains.
Once they card has been formated, is there anything else i need to do besides s2e and reboot it? I've been doing some google-search and i've read about hboot and even flashing the phone again? Is this really something i need to do, or should my phone se the ext3 as internal harddrive right after i've run s2e and rebooted it?

i also recommend gparted, it's the best method alongside 4ext recovery. step 5 here is better.
do not use S2E, read the app description: "S2E works only with CyanogenMod7, CyanogenMod9 and CyanogenMod10". also, you don't need to do anything else to move apps to sd-ext with this ROM.
the reason it shows only 148MB is because you are on stock hboot. basically your current system size is 250MB, and the rom's system size is only about 110MB, wasting 140MB.
you need to s-off and change hboot to cm7r2 hboot to maximise space. it has a system size of 145MB. (there are ways to optimise it further but this will be the easiest way for you.)
It will still only show 287MB of internal afterwards, and it will never 'see' the partition. keep your apps on 'internal', this should trick your apps to sd-ext.
so...
- backup your apps etc using titanium or similar
- backup your sd to computer
- repartition sd using gparted guide exactly
- copy everything back to sd
- s-off if you haven't already
- change to cm7r2 hboot (search for guides, i recommend using fastboot, set it up and read the fastboot bit here).
- reboot into recovery, full wipe and flash rom.
- restore apps, keep them on internal as suggested.
- use another app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions, you should see your sd-ext filling up with app apks and dalvik cache as expected.
- internal memory will still decrease as app data is still stored on internal nand, but it will do so much slower, and 287MB should be plenty for app data.
sounds like a faff, but the guides and info are already there for a reason...you'll be using the space more efficiently, and hopefully understand a bit more how things work and where everything is...

[Q] how to turn SD into into internal memory?

OK so I looked at a similar thread to this but I don't think I understood nor do I believe its right Ford what I want to do.I was wanting to put stock ICS on my phone but to do so will leave me with (roughly) 20 megabytes of storage left. I have been told there is a way of tricking the OS into believing the SD is internal storage I have looked on the internet and here as well and found nothing therefore I was wondering if you guys could help me out in accomplishing this. any feedback is both welcome and appreciated thanks
flash the rom, flash gapps, and on the first boot go to play store and install mounts2sd, configure it to reverse mount and select apps, data and dalvik. voila

Yes this can be done quite easily using a script called a2sd or another like it.
First you need to create a ext4 partition on your sd card. It's highly recommended to use gparted(look around for guides)
Then flash a rom that has a2sd support. If you want ics/jb, I'd recommend the rom in my signature...it's great and works well with a2sd
Once in the rom, open terminal emulator and type
su
a2sd install
y
n
y
From then on all apps that you install will be moved to your sd-ext partition.
Thanks.

hey everyone,
i have a similar problem. i partitioned my sdcard into fat32 and ext4 for apps. i'm using "VJ CM10.1 | Jelly Bean 4.2.2 - v5.1" and ran the script as described in the thread (and posted here by chromium96). if i now go to system, app management and try to move an application (i tried several) to sdcard then this option is greyed out. further he shows me under app management, usb storage that no app is installed on usb (correct) but the space used seems to be my fat32 partition (he shows me 1,8gb as used which is the used space on my fat32, my ext4 is blank). is this normal or am i doing sth wrong? any suggestions?

Apps move automatically to sd-ext. You don't need to move them manually.
Flash int2ext4V2 script.. And u can use ur full ext..

its a bit confusing because if i open app desciption i can see that "usb-storage-app" and "usb-storage-data" both have 0 Byte (i assumed that this is the information for the data used by the app on the sdcard).

Make bigger partition.

Hi I currently have 512mb partition how do I change it to 1gb thanks. I'm using 4ext recovery.

You know how to make partitions with 4ext. You cant do it without losing data. Unless you use gparted

I recommend to backup your sd card to pc first.
Then backup your sd-ext partition within 4ext if you have a stuff on the partition.
Within 4ext there should be an option to format sd partitions, then repartition with 1gb. Consider increasing it to 1.5gb if you have spare fat32 space and want to install even more apps.
Finally restore sd contents from pc and sd-ext from recovery.
Thanks guys. I thought I might be able to just increase it without doing anything else but obviously can't. Thanks again.

What were you expecting?
Thought could do it in recovery without needing anything else.

In 4ext, you can use the "keep fat32 partition". It will save your data.

You can as above, I just recommend backing things up before just in case
how big can you make the EXT4 partition?
Hi Guys,
I am using a rather old ROM (LeeDroid) and I already increased the EXT 4 to 1Gb.
However, the phone still got full with apps.
Now I bought a bigger card, increased the EXT 4 to 2 GB, but the phone (or ROM) doesn't seem to recognize it...still cant install new apps...
Are there limitations I don't know? Is there a max size of the EXT4?
Thanks for any help...

Theres no actual maximum limit, but it highly recommended that you dont make the ext partition more than 1.5gb
OK, thanks, I will reduce it, but is that why the phone doesnt see the increase?
The change I made didnt make ANY difference...

you can't just swap cards. have you restored restored the ext4 partition from the old card to the new card?
also depends which leedroid rom you are using. you can get much more space by changing hboot and installing the data++ version of his HD port, read the FAQ. this approach requires s-off.
you don't see the increase because a2sd won't report internal memory as "internal + ext". apps get moved to ext automatically. keep them on internal will trick them to sd-ext, i.e. don't manually 'move to sd'
you can use more of the ext space by also moving dalvik to sd-ext, search the leedroid threads on in that FAQ for flashable dalvik to sd zips. there will always be a limit depending on how many apps you install.
i always recommend using an app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions, that way you know exactly how they are filling up
Chief,
Thanks for your responses so far... I am thinking to "upgrade" but the LeeDroid 3.3.3 Data ++ ROM is no longer available to download it seems..
Any idea where I might find it?
Thanks again.
