[Q] am i having google now issues? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Been running jb since it was available. Google now will tell me the weather and remind me of my calendar appointments. But it still won't advise me of traffic during my commute to work. I set up my own profile in the people app with my home and work address but it still doesn't work. Any advice?
Also, seems like the only way I can enjoy Google nows voice is when I ask for a definition. What else can one ask or say to get a verbal response?

You don't set it there. You set it in the desktop Google Maps > my places > Home / Work. Or on the Maps app under location history settings

Thanks for the help. But the maps app doesn't have a location history setting. At least none I can see

I fixed it. Lattitude was off.
How do you go about making Google now a little more talkative?

Usually knowledge graph queries will make it talk "Who is the Prime Minister of England?" "How tall is the Eiffel Tower?" "What time is it in Tokyo?" "What is the weather in Moscow?" "Who won the Nationals game yesterday?"

What is the time, what is the date, what are the pizza stores around me..
it's very cool to see its answers sometimes.

I ask these things and mine usually does a Google search n stays silent. Odd

1. Make sure device language is US English
2. Set google.com as your search location and not your local version (eg. google.cn) This, however, will break local search results (your weather will show up as Washington, DC)

[Q] Google Search Assistant - Does it work out of the USA?

I've been trying Jelly Bean on my GN for a couple days now and, while the whole experience has been awesome, there is a particular feature announced at I/O that does not work: the Search Assistant. You know, those Siri-like cards with info that show up after you perform a Google search while a voice reads them out.
Is that working for you guys living in the USA? What about those who, like me, live abroad? Does it have a geographical restriction? Is it just still not live yet?
Would welcome some help about this.
one of the option in the google now/voice thing is "use google.com instead of localised google". If you check that as 'yes' then you would get the cards with pics how up, but if you say "what is the weather" or "what is the time" it would always default to Washington DC, USA no matter where you are outside USA (And other issues like "what is the weather in waterloo shows me waterloo, USA instead of waterloo, canada).
that being said...
the voice search works fine otherwise with localised search. As much as it bugs me to not have those cards with the pic show up after a voice search, its mosly a "for looks" thing. voice search assisstant works perfectly however, it also shows cards (just not with pictures) for results as it should.

Not in my case. I asked it to use google.com, disabled using my location and even changed the language to US English, but to no avail. Maybe it just also works in Canada?

try turning it off and back on, or erasing data/cache for that app, sometimes resetting it does the trick.
Hm... no, no dice. What I would really like is to know if this is also happening to other folks in Europe.

Works "alright" here in the UK. I can set alarms, send texts and if I say "weather" it brings up the weather in my location as well as speaks it back. Also works for weather in other locations. Cards with images and data DO pop up, but it is a bit hit and miss. A lot of the time you just get a google search. However, the navigation if I have just searched for a place on Google works well. I done a search for an address earlier to see where it was in relation to me, 30 seconds later I had a navigation card informing me of the route a possible delays. I'm happy with it, when it works (which is most of the time) its a fantastic addition.

If you are still having trouble, you may want to check out this tutorial which made it work for me in Germany: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28043720&postcount=1
Interestingly, after I had google.com set as search engine, Google Now always thought I was in Washington and thus only showed Washington-based Information to me. Thus I switched back to google.de, now getting local information about my actual location. Google Now still works for me without having the search engine set to google.com

Google Now not recognizing my local settings?

HI, I have Modaco JB rom installed and am having trouble with Google Now not recognizing my local settings. When I ask for weather it tells me my location, but it is in C not F and there aren't any card settings. When I ask for Home (which I have set in my maps account) it takes me to the closest "Home" named business to my location. I don't have any customization at all (see pic).
I am using Google Apps and have web history turned on. Also all settings on my phone (time, temp, location) are correct. It isn't the rom as this is the second JB rom I have flashed and had the same problem with that one.
Any Help would be appreciated!!
I had this problem too. It turns out that Apps accounts need to turn Google Now on for it to work. I detailed the steps here:

What if you just have a regular Gmail account that all of your services are tied to?

Then you shouldn't need to do this. When I added my normal gmail account to my phone, Google Now automatically worked. When you started Google Now, did you get the little intro/wizard thing, or did it go straight to a search box? If you got the introduction, and whenever you pull up Google Now, you get the colorful banner on top, then Google Now already works on your phone.
If you're having trouble with the Knowledge Graph cards showing up, then you have a different issue regarding your language settings.

From what I've read, along with setting your search and location settings to the US, you'll have to enable Web History and Location History.

Google maps home\work location

Hy guys,
Tought I'd post this as help to those who need it (like I did..)
I'm using google now and liking the location and weather cards, I followed this simple explanation by H3g3m0n :
To set Home/Work on Android (It's kind of hidden):
Start Maps
Tap on your icon (The blue dot on the map, this should have your contact photo on it not just the blue arrow. You can pull it up by turning on the Latitude option.)
Tap on your name that appears above it
Tap location History
Tap the menu dots down the bottom right
The you get the Change home/work location options
this is a brief how-to on how to set home and work locations in google maps so that google now will know where i live and work and start giving me cards about that info.
But after I did that I learned that google now will automatically learn where I live and work and that sounded really cool and so I wanted to delete the information I specified in order to let google now figure it out for itself.. I couldnt find any way to delete that information.. until I logged into google maps from my desktop, and had been given the option to delete home and work locations. today is the first day I went to work with the JB and google now updates so I'm gonna let google now figure it out for the next couple of days and see what comes out GOTTA LOVE GOOGLE!
Thanks for sharing the tip but I am curious - why would you want to go back and let Google Now figure it out if you were already able to specify home and work locations yourself?

Well first of all I wanted to see how google now learns my locations by itself, sounds pretty cool
And second - lets say I specified a street name and number and the gps\wifi detects that my home is one street number off (my street is smll and numbers can be as close as 20 meters) then it won't know I'm at home, I guess I didnt want to restrict an address to a certain street number but rather give google now the oppertunity to learn where I live on a larger radius
Erase job?
I can't seem to erase my job. I was laid off a month ago and Google now is a glaring remind every time I open it when it tells me how far I am from my old office. Kinda depressing lol its like you have to have an address there. I've cleared my work location on Google maps but Google now just doesn't get it.

Google has always done a pretty good job of knowing where I am all the time and deciding where is work and where is home. Years ago my roommate and I would use Latitude to keep tabs on each other. Google Now kind of tapped into what google already knew. Having your wifi on helps Google determine your location, especially if you have wifi at work/home, but even if you don't.

Just right click on your desired location, then click on "what's here" (last option down the box) and your coordinates will be displayed in the search bar, just copy them into the address box.

[Q] "Navigate to home" doesn't work - it shows web searches for the word "home"

[Q] "Navigate to home" doesn't work - it shows web searches for the word "home"
I have already set my "Home" address in Google Maps (from the web, not within the Android app). I search the net and there are numerous article that said that you can just say any of this word to GET DIRECTION to go home:
- Navigate to home
- How long does it take to go home
- Take me home
But if I do this, it will only bring up web searches (Home Depot, definition of the word "home", etc.).
Is there anything I need to do?

It seems to affect some people, but there is no known symptom why it happened.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/maps/OfbBk_RKhEw
I did everything, from resetting Google Now to adding-removing-adding my Home address. I remember I used to be able to type "Home" in maps.google.com and it'll recognize my home address, but even that won't work anymore. Something is screw up on Google back-end, I think.
Interestingly, Google Now CAN show traveling card. I.e. it'll show "60 minutes to Home" and when I opened the card, it'll take me to Google Map app and it'll show "From: current location" and "To: Home".

I had exactly this problem. When I changed my address to something *better* everything started working. Try a few different address formats.
You have to have google now enabled, as well as "location history", even if you set up your work and home addresses, once you turn off location history the voice commands stop working. (Lame IMO but that was google makes you turn on your history)

I noticed a setting for "Ok Google" Detection.
Click G on Nexus 7 home screen, swipe up, select 3 dots menu, Settings option. Select Voice option, "Ok Google" Detection.
There are three options:
[x] From Google Search app: Say "Ok Google" to start a voice search from Google app
[?] From any screen: Responds to your voice. Works when the screen is on or the device is charging
[?] From lock screen: Allow "Ok Google" to start a voice search or action from the secure lock screen
Anyone know if these settings impact Android Wear, e.g. Moto 360, operations?

Have you tried setting a *fake* address for home and using navigate home? But, pick a real address for *fake* and verify it with voice navigation on your phone/tablet first. If this works try switching back to your real address. Something might be wrong with Google search finding your real address. This happened to me.

Hmm, that's interesting.
I am now in the midst of "resetting" my data with Google. Location History, YouTube, apps cache, etc... from the phone and my Google account on the web.. Trying to see if I can "reset" whatever process Google have in the backend.
Do you get an answer to "where is my home? " or "where is my house? " or something like that?
It shows the location of my house in my watch.

Just tested "where is my home" and it found it! A map card showing my home is displayed. Ditto for "where is my work". But then I tried "direction to my home", "navigate to my home", "take me to my home" doesn't work. AAGGH!!!
So it looks like Google does recognize my home and work location, but NOT when navigating ?!
PS: I just did a clean-up: disabled Google Now, deleted all Location History and disabling it, go to maps.google.com and delete "Home" and "Work" location, etc. and re-enable everything. No go.
I remember there is used to a "Navigation" app in 4.2. I don't recall if I make changes there, but I wonder if I did make changes with that app, Google may "remember" certain setting that cause this issue? Unfortunately, the "Navigation" app is not there in 4.3
Heh, found out if I say "Agenda for Today", it'll bring a search of that word...
This must be something with Google. I don't know, maybe because I had the Google Mail account back in 2004, when they first launched and adding all the privacy-invading-stuff...sorry...feature break something.

I have a solution
Just sign out of Google now and sign back in. This worked for me.

My watch says it can't answer personal questions.

Hello, all.
When I use Google Assistant on my Huawei Watch 2 and include personal information (e.g. "Take me home."), it gives me the following error message:
Actually, I need permission before I can answer personal questions about you. To change your settings, just open the Google Home app on your phone. Once that's done, ask me again!

This started happening maybe a month back or so. I know that I was able to ask personal questions at first when I got the watch. I have tried looking through the settings on the Google Home app, but I haven't found anything relevant. The watch doesn't even show up as a device alongside my Google Homes, Chromecast, and phone.
I originally had a Nexus 6P, and I recently upgraded to a Pixel 2 XL. I don't know if that has anything to do with what's happening, but I would find that pretty strange. I'm not sure exactly when this started happening, so I don't know if there's any correlation between changing phones and this issue. I just checked, and the watch says the system is up-to-date, and all installed apps are up-to-date.
I was hoping that an update would be pushed to the watch that would fix this, but it's been a long time, and I still have the same issue.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Lets try...
Hi,
lets try the following method:
In your Google App on your Smartphone go to Settings -> Accounts & Privacy -> Google Activity Controls
What does it show here?
Is it the right E-Mail-Address?
If you want to use personalized orders, Google needs to track your information. E.g if you want to say "show me the home rout", it has to analyze, where your home is.
As far as I know, Google does this by checking, where your phone is (via GPS) most of the time - but thats just an idea.
Hope I could help you!

Hello.
I just checked, and the email is correct. All of the options are set to "On."
I guess I should add that when I tell my phone to take me home, that still works fine. Also, my Google Homes know where my work is. So, it shouldn't be an issue where Google isn't able to query for that personal information. I have that enabled for my account. But for some reason, I can't do it from my watch.
Any clue yet?
Did anybody figure out how to fix this?
Many others have posted the exact same problem.
