I am thinking about getting a Defy or an HTC Wildfire (again) but I have two questions:
The Froyo update is still scheduled for Q2 2011 correct?
Is the speaker problem still an issue and are there any other hardware issues?
I am buying unlocked and having an issue will prove very inconvenient to rectify so I am doing due diligence.
I love the specs. One thing that I love is how compact the phone is. 3.7" screen and practically the same dimensions as my 3.2" screen HTC Wildfire.
that three questions not two
-yes its scheduled for q2 2011
-speaker problem is no longer an issues, its been fixed with in newer version on the phone
-there are no other hardware issues as far as i know
If defy is within your budget, you will definitely regret buying wildfire. Wildfire gets you 1/5th the pixels, much slower cpu, and no gpu. It looks and feels better though (personal preference).
Speaker problem was fixed since December productions. Just make sure you don't get October/November stocks (not that they necessarily have the problem, but such aged stocks could be returned/refurnished).
The speaker issue is not fixed - just see the Moto support page & you will find broken phones with manufacturing dates Jan/Feb. The issue is just taking longer to appear.
The resolution on the Wildfire is not good but I did not mind. I owned one already and the only issue I had was how poorly angry birds used to play. The majority of my use will be browser, emails, telephony, messaging, and the occassional puzzle game.
The speaker issue is worrying to me. It was the reason I did not get a Defy a few months ago. I did look through the Motorola support page and I am not sure what is accurate.
The speaker issue is a small percentage of handsets (source is Motorola).
The speaker issue is more prevelant in UK phones (forum users).
The speaker issue is not found in 2011 manufactured phones (forum users).
I like the phone enough to take a gamble, but I will regret it if I have the issue.
Defy vs Wildfire... makes no sense. Defy is better in every single feature, screen resolution, screen size ratio, cpu (a lot better here), performances, wifi (Defy supports N band), and so on.
Upgrade to 2.2 is confirmed, China versions already come with Froyo.
I'm an "old" Defy user, i bought it more than 4 months ago, never had the speaker issue, of course, other people had troubles so you should take it into account.
Last, the price is affordable considering the features offered.
In my opinion no doubts, go for the Defy.
EDIT: and, how to forget it, this phone is water proof and also shock resistant
EDIT2: irony, time ago during a rainy day i lost the speaker's capabilities (recipients couldn't hear me) on my htc s710.
FWIW, I bought my Defy when they first came out in the US (Nov.) while the speaker issue was "raging" on Euro forums. I have had zero issues and it still does seem that the issue has effected far less T-Mo branded phones. However, in real-world numbers, the amount of phones with this issue is relatively small.
On the German forum where they were declaring it was the end of the world and bloggers were linking to it to show that "thousands" of phones were going south, the forum itself ran a poll and -- at that time -- they documented thirty phones. That doesn't mean that covered all phones effected, but the internet hysteria on this issue is, as usual, out of control.
What market are you in?
Defy vs Wildfire - The Defy is better in most categories except:
- Wildfire comes with Froyo 2.2
- Wildfire does not have a known speaker issue
- Wildfire is cheaper
I am willing to spend the extra $100 on the Defy to get a bigger screen, better resolution, faster cpu, and durable phone but I am worried about the speaker.
I am buying unlocked so I am not sure which market the phone will come out of.
The reason why these two phone which really are not in the same category are on my list is size. The HTC Desire is a little big for my taste and the Defy is amazingly small with a nice, big screen. I wonder why more people do not like this phone. Cuz it is a Motorola? (I actually love Motorola despite owning 2 HTC phones previously).

If you are in the US (?) and buy a US designed phone you can get on both T-Mo and (according to several forums) AT&T 3G. If you are buying outside the US just be sure to watch out for one thing (from unscrupulous sellers): some are selling phones over the internet designed for Saudi where Market is apparently not allowed and the phone won't have it. (If I were living in Euro, I would buy a T-Mo USA phone and unlock it that way I could use 3G in Euro, Asia and the USA... but that's just me).
I do love this phone and if I were looking for a phone for another family member would not hesitate to buy another. The size of this phone is just right.

There are always defective products, just a matter of scale.
I love mine, I almost didn't get it but its a big improvement over my old Magic.
Sent from my Defy, with XDA Premium
My Defy's speaker took around 3.5 months to break. What percentage of owners do you think report the fault on forums? I imagine the real size of the problem is 20-30 times greater.
The fact is the 2010 Defys had a bad earpiece which will stop functioning sooner or later because of its design. It will take time to see the extent of the problem with later units.
I have nothing negative to say about this phone other than this issue, but it is a big negative. I'll be buying an HTC or LG this month and won't look at another Moto product again.

Get a Defy...
- The Moto website says Q2 but they've already sent out a Beta update for the US model which works well even if it isn't official yet.
- The speaker issue, which I agree is a deal breaker, affects only a small percentage of users and the chances of you buying one with this defect right now is slim to none.
I got my Defy when it came out and I've had no problems so far. Performance is stellar and my speaker is fine...
I am going to get the Defy. I saw a post in the forum where the user replaced the speaker with a SE K850i speaker relatively easily. So if my luck is bad and my speaker goes I will change it. As silly as it sounds I may order a speaker the same time as the phone to avoid any possible downtime.
Hi,
Bit annoyed, i'll tell you what happened.
SO ... i was happy with my One X, didn't have the screen flicker, or artifacts, or the bad battery life problems.
Then 1.29.401 came along and changed all that. Screen flickers regularly now, and the battery seems to drain a lot faster.
I called HTC, reset the phone, yada yada yada.
HTC told me to go back to where i got it from to DOA it, even though the phone was more than two weeks old. I call the store's support hotline, they said they would "probably" DOA it if the phone was "like new" ...
It's like new because it IS new, so fine.
I go to the store, wait in line for a good 1-1.5 hrs.
Then comes what we all despise.
"Well ... i can't see anything wrong with it."
That's just GREAT!
I spend another 10 minutes trying to explain that it's most noticeable on greys, etc, etc. FINALLY i get him to notice the flickering. He said we'll need your phone for 3 weeks approx. I refuse, he says tough luck. No DOA, no refund. They'll send it in for "repair".
Now ... all of you here KNOW that a phone doesn't get "repaired". If it's not software, they'll send you new hardware. Simple.
Anyway ... i walk out of the store. I Call HTC again. Same story. Dude tells me all he can do for me is to collect it, will take 10 days.
And then i got pissed off ...
This is how i got them to escalate the case:
Me: "Your update ruined my phone. I didn't have problems before, you not only sold me faulty hardware, you ruined my phone after selling it to me."
Rep: "We have to follow procedures, i cannot just give you another phone."
Me: "But you can just go ahead and break it?"
Rep: "Well ..."
Me: "You sold me faulty hardware, you broke it after you sold it to me. This is your responsibility. I am not going to take days off and incur further costs because you -as a company- are playing hide and seek. You won't 'fix' this phone at all. I don't see some poor schmuck with a soldering iron going at it on a microscopic 10 layer board. You want me to send you the phone for you to throw on a pile and then you'll have to send me a new one anyways. This is a hardware problem."
Rep: "I'll escalate the case for you."
Cue long and boring Q&A...
We'll see what happens. I hope they send me a new phone. I don't want to jump through hoops to get proper and decent service. This phone is expensive, i bought it unlocked and unbranded. They should just stop playing games!
I know you read this HTC, please treat your customers better.
Kr,
-Kevin

The way i see it, it's already in some state of disrepair.
I think the backlight is just PWM controlled since it's leds anyway.
They are probably using some PWM capable pin off of something and some transistors. Either this line is being spiked by something (like RF, or static discharge), or it can't provide enough current to drive the transistors in a stable manner.
I dno, but the second i saw it, i was sure it's a hardware issue.
This is, I could quite conceivably have the issue but I just might not notice it - everyone's eyes are different. I mean I can read things at great distance and have perfect 20/20 vision but I've not had a single issue with my handset at all

That's because, in the absence of any real information, people keep making things up. Then, multiple people buy in to whatever the guess of the day is and it starts being treated as fact.
Here are some facts:
- The issue is most likely Teg3 related as it's not occuring on the One XL.
- It's not the physical display or related h/w as the One XL isn't experiencing any similar issues.
- It's most likely s/w as the Teg3-based Asus Prime had similar issues and they were resolved after multiple updates.
- Resolution is most likely out of HTC's control as Nvidia' drivers and low-level code are proprietery; meaning they have to make the revisions.
- Phone's at the height of their flickering score lower on the AnTuTu 2D test. When rebooted they score normally. This points to s/w.
- Further supporting that, the below quote if from a very well respected dev here on XDA.

Pretty sure this has to do with the crappy gfx drivers. The same thing that cause the camera to have issues and the notification bar. While I had the international one x, the phone benched really well while those problems weren't happening, but as soon as I was able to reproduce them and ran the tests again, score was reduced by a lot.
I could reboot the phone and the problems would go away, only to come back after some use.

In the absence of hard fact it's normal to speculate. It's not normal to accept that speculation in place of fact when it's not provided by people with h/w or s/w engineering experience any greater than your own.
I think the At&t version has a little different screen. I keep seeing it it brighter and it has a little different coloring. Could be software controlling that, but I think its more likely just that they have improved the build quality of the display. Better quality then the first batches that came on the first batches of the Htc One X with Tegra 3. I have read that the newest batch of them have better displays.

The antutu thing: when rebooted, the flicker doesn't disappear, but the benchmark score returns to normal, that would indicate that the antutu benchmark score is entirely different to the flickering
I do understand your points however, I'm just not convinced it is software. And that HTC /nvidia whoever are trying to bodge the software to make it work with crappy hardware that isn't working correctly. Personally id rather have the hardware that worked in the first place without any fixes.

Yes, but I think they have improved on the build quality of the lcd. Sometimes it takes a couple of batches to get through before they have perfected the model.

My phone and other phones that don't flicker have AnTuTu 2D scores that never change. There most likely is a h/w component to the problem. Speculation is that there's some inconsitency between Teg3 chips and the range they're responding in is outside what the s/w's anticipating. Flickering is just one of the graphics issues. At this point there's nothing to indicate they all aren't related. You can assume that outside the SoC and radios, most parts are common between the X and XL to save on component and production costs. I'd also assume that most of the HTC developed s/w is common to both phones also. The fact that the XL isn't having graphics issues points to something Teg3 related. Especially because the Prime had some of the same funky issues at launch. While it may defy logic, the issues on the Prime were resolved with s/w.
Hi,
I am getting ready to buy a HOX as the S3 is not to my liking.
As we all know some of the first HOXes had build quality issues like yellowish screen spots, cracking of the outer shell and screen, and flickering.
I am wondering if HTC has successfully adressed those issues yet. Could new owners please report their build quality (please no early adopters anymore).
Please report any issues (also please report if you don't have any) and your device color (as it seems to indicate country of production).
Surely more ppl than just myself are curious to know if HTC has addressed the issues.
Thanks for your kindness in sharing your experiences.
All the best.

thanks. I've asked because I've looked at one in a local store. It cracked and had a noticable annoying yellow spot on the screen. Also HTC had promised to address the issues. I'm just wondering how production of the devices improved...
got my HOX 11 days after the uk release and i have had no issues whatsoever. The build quality is htc standard aswell, plastic phone but damn good quality sturdy plastic lol. none of the samsung rubbish
i love my one x and nth is wrong with it its just the battery. what pisses me off is that the S3 has the same dimension a bit different and same wight just 3g difference and they have a 2100 mAh battery, what would have happened if HTC did that God !!!! im sorry im just really pissed just saw this
please make sure other than that i love the phone it works great i have nth to say more than its 99% great just battery life and if i have to recomend someone to get a phone it is the HOX for lots of reasons !!!
my answer for u is go ahead and buy the HOX its a great phone !!!
chances of a fauly one?
The build quality issues are the only thing stopping me getting one too. They are about $100 cheaper to buy on ebay than in a store (buying outright) but would be a real pain to have to ship back and forth if it was faulty. What do you think the chances would be of getting a fauly one? or worth the extra money to be able to return it the same day ?

I've seen 3 different one x and they all had issues and my latest is from a newer batch and it have flickering, screen issues and a low lit back button. Most people that are happy with their handsets either are the kind that dont look for flaws or fanboys, as youve started this thread i guess youre not that kind. I think all phones have flickering in some degree but most people dont see it. The amount of faulty hoxes is way too frequent. You should listen to those who put their phones under a microscope if you want an objective opinion.

I dont know why people keep say things like "why can company A do this but company B can't?" It makes no sense at all. Just because Motorola can make an awesome battery or S3 has a bigger battery so HTC HAS TO be able to do the same thing. Well, apparently they cant. Their technology doesnt allow them to do that, and it's ok. No need to get worked up about it. If their stuff doesn't live up to your expectations then feel free to not buy them. SO now the dozens of people who have faulty handsets on XDA (look at the poll) represent the market?

My One X is perfect(there is a chance the screen flickers and i have umpteen dead pixels but i need to borrow a microscope to make sure.) I have no creaks, rattling noises,no gaps between body and screen.I`d give it a 10/10 but downgrade it to 9/10 because i can`t get used to the volume controls on the right hand side.

I got two HT243 phones one after the other, the first on the 17th of April, had a yellow band on the top left of the screen, a small gap on the left with the associated creacks and flex and the deal killer, Wi-Fi connectivity issues.
After 4 days, gave up and had it exchanged - the next was and still is perfect. Ten days after I got it, I unlocked it and am now experimenting with custom Roms.
This is my 5th HTC handset in as many years, all lived and worked in perfect state untill they got sold. I am confident my HOX will live up to the expectations.
The only drawback I really find is the battery, indeed, as this is a device that craves to be used, it's unexplainable, but I feel I cannot let it down. Bear in mind it's my fourth week with it already. Htc should have given us the option for a replaceable power pack.
So I suggest you get your unit from a retail store, so that you can examine the device beforehand, at least for the physical defects described on this forum.
.... Or make sure you have a later model HT245... HT25...

there are two types of HTC One X out there
1) TRADE ones - usualy they are cheaper with more problems (screen, yellow spots, bad tegra chip, hot as hell) and are usualy sold WW mostly via internet. Usualy they are some sort of "not so good at quality control but we (htc) need money so lets sell them for a lesser amount of money".
2) SELLING ones - they are more expensive and sold by official HTC distibuters and carriers. They have outstanding performance and build quality due to good quality control. But remember, some of SELLING ones can end up with TRADE batch so some might be lucky (I am sorry but AMAZON, EBAY, EXPANSYS have the TRADE ones so you will most likely have some problems with the phone.)

Since the serial number sequencing is identical for all devices and there's no differentiation in markings between devices either on the device itself or the box, how pray tell do you suggest HTC's able to know the difference between "good" ones vs. "bad" ones and then direct either to a reseller based on their status?
Hilarious!
I've got to ask, on what grounds can you say this. What evidence is there?
Nah.... That would be an logistical nightmare to have diffrent "types" of phones. I call this conspiracy theory!
Both me and my wife would according to you're statement have "bought" "seller" phones. We both had to exchange them several times for diffrent faults. If the "seller" phones were that bad, I wonder how bad the "trade phones" are!!

This simply isn't true and scares many ill-informed HOX users.
What IS accurate, and true of most manufacturers is this:
1) Production of a device can change over time - sometimes early units are poorer quality, and sometimes that are BETTER quality.
2) Over time, the manufacturer might discover minor production issues and improve the quality of build to correct certain issues, but also, they can start to source cheaper components in an attempt to cut costs, making later version slightly worse, or just slightly different. We're talking very minor internal changes here, or components (like camera) sourced from another manufacturer - but using same drivers / capabilities etc)
What can also happen is that devices can sometimes be manufactured in more than one factory, and quality might differ very slightly.
The serial numbers of units CAN be sequential, but still allow the manufacturer to know which are 'good' and which are 'bad' units, but selling 'bad' units knowingly at a lower cost (without telling the customer) would be suicide for HTC. They COULD sell them as 'B' grade though.
Nonsense.
Btw i bought my one x on ebay, cheapest i could find, which was 340 quid for a new unlocked unit, and its FLAWLESS. No bugs or defects whatsoever.(sh27)

Agree with all above, also WTF is with the size of your Sig?!
Waste of a thread. Can a mod get rid of this please.
Nonsense, the initial batches were a bit problematic but not all devices suffered the issues.
A lot of companies are selling refurbished units for a lower price but hard to state what's actually been refurbished and whether any of the known bugs were resolved.

Sounds like a load of crap to me
OP, do you have any evidence to backup your claims?
Baloney !
Bought two on Ebay in July, no problem.
International version from well regarded seller in Hong Kong.
ATT version from well regarded US vendor.
Those buying early and/or from shadier vendors are more likely to have problems.
for those who said "this is a myth" "Lies" it actually applies to every cell phone device. I call the defective ones "Flowing water products" (Not sure how they come up with those terms but it is pretty common in china). Those are the devices sold by third rate resellers. That is why they are cheaper to begin with.

Im interested in purchasing a HTC One X and would like to know if there are any issues or problems with the phone, what and why should I choose this phone over competing phones?
Thanks in advance

That was quite a read and looks promising, I do see some posts what are a bit of a second thought but I'm not sure if they're iphone fanboys.
- GPS?
- Wi-Fi?
- Screen Flickering? (Seen this one quite a few times on the internet)
- Overheating (Seen this one a lot too)

Hi. I have had iphone 3gs, iphone 4, iphone 4s, galaxy s2 and now HOX and it is the best I of all those (it was kind of lousy at software at the start , laggy and awful battery) but the recent upgrades have made it super smooth and very decent battery wise. Hands down has the best screen ever, easily beating the Galaxy S3 and beating the iphone 4s by a hair (better whites IMHO). The phone is super smooth, screen is AMAZING, gps works great, is stylish.
However, make sure you can easily return your phone in case some of these show up :
- Weak wifi signal, know production issue on early batches, it is a design flaw.
- Yellow spots on screen
- Flickering on screen
I think those are the most common issues you might face. If you think a return/exchange will be difficult, I would advise you buy the SHS3 or iphone 5.
What potential issues (that has not been mentioned already on the board) would you like to have mentioned to suffice your need?

True but with some devices there are issues what plague the entire model and I'd rather avoid phones which are bug happy.

Thank you very much for your lovely reply, the yellow spots and flickering wouldn't bother me that much but a weak-wifi would be a problem as I'd be using wi-fi a hell of a lot, however you mention it was in early batches so I would assume it wouldn't be the case in a newly purchased one but yeah warranty returns/exchanges would be fine so I could get them resolved fairly easy.
You might of just convinced me to buy a HTC One X

Wifi is normal, it weakens when you block the edge on top of the phone with your hand. Normally it is good

That's why I'm asking this question.
You will get the same answers as are already mentioned so many times.

I think all issues software wise have been fixed with the 2.17 update, the only thing that's left ,I mean if you develop the fault, is Wi-Fi signal for me it got weaker couple of metres from modem and the gap that the screen has where dust is gathering,I send it to repair , should get to repair center today, believe me or not I had 4 hoxes , all were faulty which pissed me off big time , so switched to gs3 but missed the hox after 1 month ,so I bought another one and guess what ? It has the issues mentioned above ,I like to think that I'm unlucky but I think the problems with hox are widespread and HTC should have done the descent thing and issue a recall

I see, I just didn't want a device with massive drop offs in wi-fi strength.

The dust issue wouldn't be a problem at all for me, if it got severe enough I'd open it up myself and clean it out. I have a few spare Void stickers laying around but yeah a lot of fixes seemed to come with the 2.17 update by a lot of peoples feedback.
My next thing to find and decide is what tablet should I get? I might try my luck with a Windows 8 RT Tablet because the ASUS Transformer TF700 (Infinity) seems to have it's only array of issues which are really really putting me off, I already had a TF201 what was fault crazy.
I personally wished that i had bought an S3/Note2/nexus-phone now, latest JB Sense roms are only available for certain devices with specific CIDs, others with CIDS not on the list will have to wait for the official update.
Screen:
Brilliant, bright, clear & solid
me:
I run at the lowest setting to save battery -_-
I have a screen protector on mines after scratches showed up, so it doesn't feel as silky smooth.
Battery:
Poor.. with careful management you can get good results but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a top end device right?
me:
I carry an external usb charger now, only viable solution for days when you need to have your phone run all day and more.
Storage:
I can live with the ~28GB usable space but who doesn't want more? microsd would be awesome.
If my phone dies (my previous desire just started having the 7 vibrate problem/dead mobo problem) there's absolutely no easy way to recover the data.
Sending it off to HTC will only result in the device getting repaired/wiped + charge for having it rooted right?
me:
dropbox sync/regular backups
..what are the benefits of rooting again?

I dont have wifi problems since my router is on ground level and i live on seccond flor i still have 2 solid bars without speed drops, dont have dust issues too. But if you happen to have something like that trust me you wont be opening it since ih has unibody without screews. You must unglue it wich is not easy task. All that is covered in waranty if it does happen. And jellybean comes soon to and trust me it runns lot better than on s3 . since i have acces to both phones. And for tablets i must say , dont go for windows. Android is much better and i think apps are better.

No problem, good luck with it! It is an amazing phone, after 6 months of having it I would say it is the best one I have ever had. It takes amazing photos too.
I have discovered one thing with Android phones, you need to work a little to get the most of them, customize them the way you like, do a little research to optimize its speed and battery, nothing out of this world but thats why I always end up recommending the iphone to my non-techie friends and family. I remember how much I hated my SGS2 at first and how I could not let go of it before I sold it!
One last piece of advise with the HOX though, do get a case for it that protect the screen edges, I dropped mine and because the glass goes to the edges it broke easily and getting a replacement screen is very time consuming!

It is a stupid design flaw, I opened mine and repaired it in 10 min (the wifi antenna needs to be lifted up a little). However, I dont recommend doing that . I did it only as a last recourse as I am out of warranty and there is no HTC service center in my country.
Apparently this has been fixed on recent batches. However looks like the old damaged batches are still plentiful and are still being sold.

All those points are valid kenny.
I don't have a problem with storage as I only need it for photos and a little for music, heck I'd be fine with 8GB, this is huge for me.
Keeping the screen at low brightness (even at 0%) isn't a huge deal to me because the One X's screen seems to be quite a bit brighter than say the one on iPhone 4S (I remember seeing that in a tech article/YouTube video). Which means it'll still look beautiful regardless of how low you set the brightness (and upping it a bit when exposed to direct sunlight won't be a huge deal for the battery).
As for the battery - seeing as how this charming device wants you to keep using it - it leaves a lot to be desired:
The bad:
-it's non-removable; this fact alone scares me to this day...after a year or two it might become unusable and I'm not sure I'll be able to replace it anywhere in my country
-you won't get more than 4hrs screen-on time if you keep switching the apps and menus, browse the internet or play games
-when you know that the battery will seldom last over a day if you use the phone, you'll never feel a lot like gaming, which just halves the battery life
The good:
-reading on the One X, which is simply a lovely experience at 312 dpi, is quite possible for 6 hours while making a few calls and sending a few texts, and having your battery last through the day
-the stand-by time is impressive
-phone calls and music don't seem to use up a lot of juice on this phone at all
One more thing to note is that although this phone is a beauty without a match, it is slippery as hell and without a case, you're bound to drop it sooner or later, and then it will most likely shatter. Personally, I take the case off when I'm home and hold it carefully, and put it back on when I go outside.
