Brickable? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Im just wondering how brickable is this device? i got it about 2 weeks ago and i dont have teh reciept ... (bought it LNIB off someone!) just wondering how brickable is this device .. is it easy to brick? i come from the G2x and Captivate with nearly 0.0001% chacne of brick loL but all i do is flash roms .. still this bootloader thing bugs me out anyways sorry if i am asking noob question i did do a quick 'search' and i did see some people bricked it ... but how easy is this to brick really?

Just watch what you flash, make sure its for your device and you should be good.

Most of the time those people flash the wrong rom on their device (GSM on CDMA, etc), but that doesn't even really brick it. If you do flash a gsm rom on a cdma device, you won't get data or signal etc..

also sorry to go off topic.. would you recomend touch cwm or regular cwm? and cm9 or jelly bean? sorry bt im just wondering .. and i can follow those rules lol im just worried like if its brickable coz i had the Galaxy S i9000 and it died from flashing the bell version not the international one

Ive been using TWRP recovery on the I9250 USA version without any problems since I first rooted this phone about a month ago. And I think ICS has better battery life, but then again I've been only using jb for a day now..if your looking for a good, smooth, and light ICS ROM, I would recommend slims ICS ROM.

I personally have touch cwm installed, I'm pretty sure you can still use the hardware buttons (vol +/-, power) to select while in touch cwm. As of right now most of the JB roms are stock, and most of the ICS roms are custom so it's really your choice on what you want.

last question .. i fi wanted nontouch CWM (im very old school dont like the new touch interface personally although appreciate what teh devs have done) could i download Rom Manager and flash it through there? or would i have to flash it from the ToolKit is better?

Either is fine. I prefer the non-touch CWM myself

Well by the sounds of it your not planing to root your device (at least straight away). Although if you do decide to purchase I recommend it as there are numerous fixes with custom roms/kernels. The battery out of the box was shockingly bad but this was quickly fixed by flashing a new kernel and it improved dramatically!! The other issue out of the box I had was the signal dropped out every so often but you can flash the latest baseband and that resolved the issue.
Hope that helps...

i'm planning to root my device...but maybe 1 or 2weeks later...for the battery fix, which kernel should i flash?is it a custom kernel or a stock kernel?
and for the signal drop issue which baseband should i flash?btw...is baseband different in every country?? i'm a noob
It depends on the rom you might flash. Some like CyanogenMod have a modified kernel that improves performance and battery life anyway. I personally like Francos kernel but it some what depends on your experiences with different rom/kernel combinations and experimentation.
As for flashing the 'right' baseband, there are different releases depending on your location. However this is not to say that a asian baseband won't work in europe (they do). So again this calls for personal experimentation and seeing what works best for you in your area.

i'm going to stick with the stock ics first...wat is the ics version of nexus out of the box?4.0.1?if it's 4.0.1,how do i upgrade it to 4.0.2 or 4.0.3?if i flash Francos kernel, will i lose my data and apps in the phone?
i'm from malaysia(asia) so which baseband do u think i should flash??
again...i'm a noob...i really appreciate tat u answer my question...thanks alot...
The version out of the box will more than likely be 4.0.1. If your planning to root anyway then you don't need to worry about what you get out of the box.
If your bootloader is locked (which it probably will be) when you get your device you will need to unlock this. Doing so will wipe your device so it's recommended to do so sooner rather than later.
EDIT:
After this point flashing a new kernel will not wipe your app data (unless you want to )
There are 'stock' rooted roms available, I but I believe these are limited to 4.0.1/2 only. If you want great performance I would recommend a custom rom.
The Toolkit (here!) is a great tool if your new to the whole rooting scene so I recommended looking at that.
You can have a look at the list of basebands as well (here!) which might make the situation a little clearer. There's no 'easy' answer, as I said before you need to do some reading and self testing. Everyones situation is different depending on exact location and rom combination. Don't be afraid at trying these new things (you can always flash a different one).

now to think of it...maybe i'm not gonna root my phone...cuz it void my warranty and galaxy nexus cost a looooooooooooot in my country...it's really expensive...
i'm sorry but what is bootloader?
thx again for your help...i'm doing some research about all this procedure right now...
As far as I know (I may be wrong), unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device does not void Samsungs warranty. Even if it does you can relock the bootloader/unroot your device so there were no signs of you tampering with your device in that manner.
Try aokp with Franco kernel.
The best rom I ever use in galaxy nexus.

No. The newest official version is 4.0.2.
In the development section of this forum there are 4.0.3 roms available because they are in aosp but 4.0.3 never never got pushed ota. There are leaked 4.0.4 roms too.
To flash a kernel you need to unlock your bootloader, flash clockwork mod recovery and flash from there. Don't flash Franco.kernel over 4.0.2
Just use the gnex toolkit to do everything, its simple.
Then read about bootloaders, adb and fastboot.
very valuable knowledge.

It will update to 4.0.2 from 4.0.1 when you turn it on and it will upgrade Over The Air (OTA)
Aosp is android open source project.
All the code for android is free for people to take and build and is stored in Google's aosp repositories.
Read as much as you can, nexus are quite simple so you'll figure it out.

Welcome to GNex forum mate.
1. Maguro is GSM galaxy nexus, and yakju is non playstore galaxy nexus, there is takju too which is playstore, the different between them is just google wallet app. You can switch takju to yakju and vice versa easily.
2. Yes, already explained above
3. You can flash radio either from recovery (cwm or twrp) or fastboot command, you can find more info about radio and baseband on sticky thread in development forum.
4. Use aokp or other custom rom which have that feature, there is a settings to set that easily. Other way is framework and systemUI modification, which is too long to explain here.
There is a bunch of rom to flash, try it one by one when you getting bored with one try another one, you will find out what the best rom for you.
I would recommend you to try latest Xylon for 4.2 rom and darkPA for 4.1.2 rom.

I have few more questions...
1. Gnex dosn't supports usb otg officially so if i am rooted and use chainfire's app mount stick .. it will work? Or i need some kernel support too...
2. Can i play 1080p videos in video player... does it lag or plays smooth?
I am very exited... i always wanted stock android rom feel but curse this touchwiz...
Sent from my GT-S7500 using xda premium
1. Galaxy nexus does support USB otg by default. The only thing missing is a proper framework for mounting expandable storage like USB sticks from USB otg, which is what stick mount provides, so yes you should just need root
2. The player will play 1080p just fine, however many audio codec isn't supported so you will want to get a third party player like MX player from the play store.

when i will get my nexus it will have ics so should i wait for ota updates or flash factory image for jb...
as i want jb as soon as i start using my phone...
Does it download whole stock rom every time i update using ota as it will update in pattern of 4.1.1>4.1.2>4.2.0>4.2.2
so will it take lots of time during ota...
i know it will download only changed files during ota but as it will be changing whole os version so it would be heavy...

May I suggest you to flash stock image, you would be set in no time, but are you sure the phone you are going to get is still on ICS ?
I had to do it because of a wrong move in recovery, and now, my phone is acting as fresh as ever, just like one year ago. This phone got better and better through software updates, so enjoy it almost instantly with its newer software version .

Welcome to android. Definitely got a good device for first android experience. Well now since you are rooted you will have to flash a custom recovery. You can download the goo.im app from the play store to get cwm recovery. That way you can flash anything to any partition within the phone. Now is that kernel for the t mobile s3? If its not, then I don't recommend flashing. Just flash what you find here. Ktoonsez makes great kernels. There are also stock over clocked ones and others as well. Once you have cwm OK installed then go ahead and download the kernel using your phone's browser. Then to boot into custom recovery, power off the device and when powering it back on press and hold the power and the volume down button. When the device vibrates once, you can then let go and and from there cwm should work and then flash file from .zip and look for your downloaded kernel and flash it

**if your still here**
1st. You cant use anymore Ktoonsez kernel or other kernels and ROMs in this thread you will end up in the customers service station cuz you said its a GT-I9300 (international variant of S3).
2. Your S3 is not a FAKE we have 2 different worlds
good luck with your phone

The link I gave you is the correct one. This forum is for the US variant on the T-Mobile network only (SGH-T999). You can always go over there and ask them if you are in the correct place.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Hello all. A friend of mine just recently received the Verizon GNex running stock 4.2.2. He seems to have the battery draining and overheating issues that 4.2.2 causes. My question is, do I go with 4.3 or 4.4? Which rom would be the most stable? Where do I go to find out how to unlock the bootloader (if it's needed) and how to root/flash custom recovery on this phone? Sorry for the noob questions but I own a galaxy S3 and know nothing about this phone. I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

For unlocking the bootloader and rooting, Follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23229558&postcount=1
If you don't get the hang of it then this will do http://www.androidrootz.com/2012/08/how-to-root-galaxy-nexus-jelly-bean-ice.html
I would suggest you to jump to 4.4, you can find many Roms in the development thread, personally I use cmetal rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532320, its insanely fast and stable. You can also try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2286506 , it has few more features and is stable.
Make sure you update to the latest recovery before you flash any 4.4 rom.
