1. All roms says they are for maguro but google controled one is yakju so what i am missing here...
2. if i have takju or something else can i make it yakju just by flashing factory image with unlocked bootloader...
3. I also read somewhere about flashing new radio... what is it .... and why they do it...
and if you can give me some more info about baseband and other useful things..
4. How can i add other soft buttons in nav bar... i know about those flashable zips but i want to know how to do it mannualy...
this will be my first nexus and samsung had only few things and all were very easy... so sorry if i am posting in wrong place or asking noob questions... if any of these are already answered then please give me link to it...

Welcome to GNex forum mate.
1. Maguro is GSM galaxy nexus, and yakju is non playstore galaxy nexus, there is takju too which is playstore, the different between them is just google wallet app. You can switch takju to yakju and vice versa easily.
2. Yes, already explained above
3. You can flash radio either from recovery (cwm or twrp) or fastboot command, you can find more info about radio and baseband on sticky thread in development forum.
4. Use aokp or other custom rom which have that feature, there is a settings to set that easily. Other way is framework and systemUI modification, which is too long to explain here.
There is a bunch of rom to flash, try it one by one when you getting bored with one try another one, you will find out what the best rom for you.
I would recommend you to try latest Xylon for 4.2 rom and darkPA for 4.1.2 rom.

I have few more questions...
1. Gnex dosn't supports usb otg officially so if i am rooted and use chainfire's app mount stick .. it will work? Or i need some kernel support too...
2. Can i play 1080p videos in video player... does it lag or plays smooth?
I am very exited... i always wanted stock android rom feel but curse this touchwiz...
Sent from my GT-S7500 using xda premium

1. Galaxy nexus does support USB otg by default. The only thing missing is a proper framework for mounting expandable storage like USB sticks from USB otg, which is what stick mount provides, so yes you should just need root
2. The player will play 1080p just fine, however many audio codec isn't supported so you will want to get a third party player like MX player from the play store.

Hey guys one more question...
when i will get my nexus it will have ics so should i wait for ota updates or flash factory image for jb...
as i want jb as soon as i start using my phone...
Does it download whole stock rom every time i update using ota as it will update in pattern of 4.1.1>4.1.2>4.2.0>4.2.2
so will it take lots of time during ota...
i know it will download only changed files during ota but as it will be changing whole os version so it would be heavy...

May I suggest you to flash stock image, you would be set in no time, but are you sure the phone you are going to get is still on ICS ?
I had to do it because of a wrong move in recovery, and now, my phone is acting as fresh as ever, just like one year ago. This phone got better and better through software updates, so enjoy it almost instantly with its newer software version .

Yes i am sure it will be on ics... thanks i will download latest yakju 4.2.1 factory image when i get my device and flash it directly...
Just to confirm would it need to unlock bootloder to do this..
is there any kind of disadvantage of unlockin bootloader otherthan loosing warrenty( which can be claimed after locking it again)...
and also does locking bootloader also wipes sd-card...
Sorry if these questions are already answered... plz give me link...

[Q] How to upgrade to Android 4.0.3

Hi,
Just got my Nexus. Can't update it as Nexus says it's up to date. And my Android version is 4.0.1 at the moment.
But I see in your signatures most of you have 4.0.3.
Do I need to be a developer (must have SDK or smth) to upgrade? Or is there a simple way to do that?
Thanks!
4.0.3 OTA is not available. It's in AOSP.
Only way to get 4.0.3 is to use a custom ROM .

That was quick
I think I will wait for official. Have no balls messing with custom ROMs at the moment Tired already of messing with Windows Mobile and searching for a perfect ROM (didn't find that in 3 years).

well luckily for you if you ever decide to go the custom rom route, the people at samsung, google, and the wonderful developers online have made it almost idiot proof, and safe to do. you will probably be surprised how easy it is. in fact, most people seem to have the most issues installing the windows(or mac) drivers properly.
peter alfonso - peteralfonso.com has the Bugless Beast rom, which is nearly stock aosp, and very stable
i have to say I tried rooting, unlock and custom rom... and the hardest bit was finding the right drivers.. but used the universal ones (in the forums) and it worked like a charm.. Just follow a guide and it's simple... but I've stuck with stock as the camera functionality isn't as good in AOSP... will flash cm9 when its ready though
go with the one touch app for rooting and the touch clockwork app they work great

You don't need to install any drivers on Mac to make fastboot working. Just download a fastboot binary (like on Linux).
Btw
When we should expect 4.0.3 to be released officially?
How long it usually takes to release a new version?

no ETA. it is ready when it is ready.
flash to custom 4.0.3 if you want it now
I am also still at 4.0.1 and when I check for update, still no 4.0.2
When were will be an update to 4,0,3 will we be able to update without losing all the settings?
I have Backup checkbox marked in my settings.
So, if I'm on 4.0.2 and download a 4.0.3 ROM it will be compatible? Same with flashing a 4.0.3 kernel on a 4.0.2?
Thanks

Well by the sounds of it your not planing to root your device (at least straight away). Although if you do decide to purchase I recommend it as there are numerous fixes with custom roms/kernels. The battery out of the box was shockingly bad but this was quickly fixed by flashing a new kernel and it improved dramatically!! The other issue out of the box I had was the signal dropped out every so often but you can flash the latest baseband and that resolved the issue.
Hope that helps...

i'm planning to root my device...but maybe 1 or 2weeks later...for the battery fix, which kernel should i flash?is it a custom kernel or a stock kernel?
and for the signal drop issue which baseband should i flash?btw...is baseband different in every country?? i'm a noob
It depends on the rom you might flash. Some like CyanogenMod have a modified kernel that improves performance and battery life anyway. I personally like Francos kernel but it some what depends on your experiences with different rom/kernel combinations and experimentation.
As for flashing the 'right' baseband, there are different releases depending on your location. However this is not to say that a asian baseband won't work in europe (they do). So again this calls for personal experimentation and seeing what works best for you in your area.

i'm going to stick with the stock ics first...wat is the ics version of nexus out of the box?4.0.1?if it's 4.0.1,how do i upgrade it to 4.0.2 or 4.0.3?if i flash Francos kernel, will i lose my data and apps in the phone?
i'm from malaysia(asia) so which baseband do u think i should flash??
again...i'm a noob...i really appreciate tat u answer my question...thanks alot...
The version out of the box will more than likely be 4.0.1. If your planning to root anyway then you don't need to worry about what you get out of the box.
If your bootloader is locked (which it probably will be) when you get your device you will need to unlock this. Doing so will wipe your device so it's recommended to do so sooner rather than later.
EDIT:
After this point flashing a new kernel will not wipe your app data (unless you want to )
There are 'stock' rooted roms available, I but I believe these are limited to 4.0.1/2 only. If you want great performance I would recommend a custom rom.
The Toolkit (here!) is a great tool if your new to the whole rooting scene so I recommended looking at that.
You can have a look at the list of basebands as well (here!) which might make the situation a little clearer. There's no 'easy' answer, as I said before you need to do some reading and self testing. Everyones situation is different depending on exact location and rom combination. Don't be afraid at trying these new things (you can always flash a different one).

now to think of it...maybe i'm not gonna root my phone...cuz it void my warranty and galaxy nexus cost a looooooooooooot in my country...it's really expensive...
i'm sorry but what is bootloader?
thx again for your help...i'm doing some research about all this procedure right now...
As far as I know (I may be wrong), unlocking the bootloader and rooting the device does not void Samsungs warranty. Even if it does you can relock the bootloader/unroot your device so there were no signs of you tampering with your device in that manner.
Try aokp with Franco kernel.
The best rom I ever use in galaxy nexus.

No. The newest official version is 4.0.2.
In the development section of this forum there are 4.0.3 roms available because they are in aosp but 4.0.3 never never got pushed ota. There are leaked 4.0.4 roms too.
To flash a kernel you need to unlock your bootloader, flash clockwork mod recovery and flash from there. Don't flash Franco.kernel over 4.0.2
Just use the gnex toolkit to do everything, its simple.
Then read about bootloaders, adb and fastboot.
very valuable knowledge.

It will update to 4.0.2 from 4.0.1 when you turn it on and it will upgrade Over The Air (OTA)
Aosp is android open source project.
All the code for android is free for people to take and build and is stored in Google's aosp repositories.
Read as much as you can, nexus are quite simple so you'll figure it out.

Are u trying to update over WiFi?
yes. but everytime the phone said that i must check after 48hours
You can choose other roms that don't look like the nexus home screen! Try out Cyanogenmod 10.1. I really liked it a lot and it was really stable and smooth!

Just look at the threads here. There are so many that it is impossible to have a definitive list. No matter what you are looking for, there is most likely a ROM that will meet your requirements. Search and read. One of things about custom roms is that flashing them can be addictive and fun.

Hi there, I´m new here. I´m from Gdl Mexico. Need help. I bought this model from TELCEL carrier but then wanted to change carrier so I did, to MOVISTAR. Tech guy from this place rooted my phone and installed some crappy firmware "Claro" (this is some SouthAmerican carrier). Said it´s the only one that can work with MOVISTAR for this model. And it does but ever since I did this I´m still running version: 4.1.1. When trying to update, says "device has been modified. Software updates are not available" Kies wont recon. And to make matters worse the "Radio" pre-installed app is gone. I don't want to switch back to TELCEL. What can I do? please help! Sorry for bombarding the forum with questions. As I've mentioned in a previous thread I just bought the gnex as a replacement since I'm grandfathered in and can't afford a new phone.
Anyway, sorry about that. Is there a way to get adobe flash without rooting. Can a apk work, if so could someone send it to me? I tried getting it via Google play previously installed apps but it won't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Flash is no longer supported beyond jellybean
There is a workaround follow the guide I linked to get flash working.
you can get the apk from official flash website, I use firefox browser after installing flash apk and it works just fine(most of time) I'm on 4.4 based rom
wish Adobe still officially supported Linux in general
Thanks both of you. I do intend on rooting just haven't had the time.
As for the .apk. Do you know if it will work with with 4.2.2 and other browsers or just FF?
Thanks.

rooting your galaxy nexus will take no time at all
once you've unlocked bootloader and installed custom recovery(ALL EXTREMELY SIMPLE) you can just flash either the superuser root zip if you plan to stay stock, or ANY of the roms available all seem to come with root(except shiny, which to root you just flash the su zip after)
just wanted to let you know that it's NOTHING to be stressed about, EXTREMELY easy to do ANYTHING on the Gnex
I am POSITIVE it will NOT work with Chrome. chrome on android doesn't support flash playback at all, never has, go figure huh? the desktop chrome comes with it's OWN flash version, but not for android lol!
it SHOULD however work with the aosp stock browser, firefox, and dolphin browser(i think dolphin browser has a special add-on to support using flash)
and also maybe opera and some others. any specific one you were thinking about?
I can send ya the apk I use personally if you want it, no need to root to install it, just enable unknown sources in security settings in main settings, install the apk, and I usually reboot after that just to be "sure" is being recognized by browser apps.
and I'm not CERTAIN, but I think official support was stopped at/after.initial release of 4.1 JB, JB held the name from 4.1-4.3
Do you still need flash? I havent installed it and have no issues at all. Maybe it is included in the browser?
