New Version? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

I've got a replacement Dinc2 coming tomorrow, having signal drop and slow speed issues (dropped calls, 1x flashing alot, 1 bar) in my blood red coverage area no matter what radio I use. And the 30 people with verizon phones I work with aren't having problems.
Anyway, they told me this new one coming has a different SKU, still a Dinc2 supposedly but the SKU is updated something is different. He said it could be ICS, but that he was purely speculating. Either way, its possible this could be the same Dinc2 with the 6.01.605.05 Software version on it or something new.
Just a heads up to everyone, I'll report in after I get it tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up, but what does this have to do with development?
This is better suited for the "general" section of the forum.

Yeah I will. That's why I put it in the development forum. If it needs to be moved that's fine. I'm not going to hold my breath but the sensation did just get ics so it's possible.

Speculating ICS? More like talking about of his ass most likely.
Keep us informed, but it's probably just the latest GB.

Most likely it is only gb, but the inc s is getting the ics ota (not sure exactly when, but I've seen chatter that It's already started rolling out), so you never know..

Go over to the general section. This doesn't go here only roms, mods an kernels.
Nothing else.

Isc on the way!

I currently work for an indirect sprint store. I been waiting for the ISC update. Well today my regional manager from sprint came in. He said last night around 3 am he got an update for ice cream sandwhich, and its real. He doesn't hack his phone or anything. So just wait a little bit and its coming out. I can tell you that it doesn't have face recognition, but its alot faster than the gingerbread that was on there.
Pictures or it didn't happen. Just kidding. That's great news. Happen to remember the build number. Just wondering because the first update might not contain face recognition.

Was there like a date he had in mind? Like early next year or late this month?
EDIT: I think its suppose to be ICS by the way man.

I want to get excited too. Should our excitement be tempered by the fact that our device is a modified version of the GS2? The hardware is very different from the regular GSII from what I understand. Can't that cause delays?
Everyone called me a troll when I said I was going to get pushed an update early a few weeks ago, hopefully it is true, we will see. With the maintenance release just coming out though, I find it hard to believe ICS is just around the corner. Two otas in such a short period does not make much sense.

Our excitement should be VERY tempered. OG Epic users went through the same thing when GB was leaked for the i9000 (the int'l galaxy s). This time the leak is for the i9100 (the int'l galaxy s 2). I would not anticipate it will be of much use for us.

The hardware is identical to the international and att Gs2 except for the radios. Its easier said than done to convert it to CDMA without samsungs source code.

pardon my ignorance but the addition of the LED, the larger screen (even the ATT version has a different size screen and the epic is certainly larger than the international version) and the processor also varies doesn't it? Do those differences not make difference?

Isn't the latest OTA dealing with the LOS and some other issues? I'd assume they can't really wait until the ICS and leave customers hanging that much longer with all the backlash.

This update date may be the one that allows the device to be updated to ICS. Im sure one of the Delvs will dig into the files to see the differences(other than CIQ)

the screen doesn't matter they are the exact same screen just different sizes. Processor, CPU, gpu, wifi/bt chip, dac are all identical.
The LED is as simple as a kernel that supports it and a rom that uses it.

Official ICS release

Please don't get excited I am just giving some generalized info that I got directly from a Samsung employee a few months back.
I was (as well as about 30 other people) told that we will have an official ICS release in the 1st quarter of 2012. That being said I think everyone can see the progress being made and I think its reasonable to believe that we can expect the official release either by the very end of this month or in the first week of April.
Side note: I am not a developer quite yet since I am working full time or caring for my infant child when I am home. I would like to say that all of the developers that are working on this phone are awesome, and that is whether they contribute mayhem and chaos to the community or they bring mountains of knowledge to the table. I only hope that all the rest of the devs sitting on their OG evos find a way to get their hands on one of our phone and get to blowing up the forums with more roms and more improvements on things. To all the devs... thank you very much for giving all of us an experience beyond that of the average user.

Actually I am saying before mid April, that is also if they finish working out their bugs before then. I was on the last leak for a while and they are pretty close, just a few more adjustments and then I'm sure sprint will test it for a couple weeks and then we should have it.

You realize this is ridiculous right? Sprint was the first carrier to get an official GB update for a Galaxy S phone. If you followed the leaks for the OG epic, you know that they had SERIOUS issues that did not get fixed until just before release (and some of them never did, there are still random reboots on stock devices, I see it every day at work).
Just take issue when people blame things on Sprint when in fact, it's a Samsung issue. Now, I personally believe the hiring of Cyanogen was part of a big push on their part to fix their reputation for being slow to update, and I think they are making a huge push right now to release ICS for the ET because they want to hang their hat on that and use it in the future. But in the past, this was a Samsung problem, not a Sprint one.

Lol I should have put (carriers) instead of just sprint... I had the vibrant with Tmobile... I dont know much about the epic 4g other than development was what 4 people?
Worst variant ever produced (epic 4g)
If it didnt have to go through carriers we would have had GB when the i9000 did (international galaxy s)
Now the epic 4g may have had problems getting GB because it was nothing like the others (giant useless keyboard?)
ill say it again if ics didnt go through sprints hand we would have it the same the if not close to the same time the international sgs2 has it....
I blame carriers more for late updates but last year wasnt to good for Samsung... But you cant base that "argument" anymore because we are gonna have ics mid spring...
The evo 3d... Hmm maybe August?

Your argument now makes even less sense. The OG epic having the keyboard obviously didn't prevent it from being the FIRST Galaxy S device to get GB in the US. Yep, that's right, Samsung didn't release an official GB for ANY US GS1 device, until the Epic. So while there were challenges with 3rd party development (the keyboard wasn't the problem, a whole bunch of changes to the software and hardware were the problem), officially, it was first. And I would argue that the devs on the OG Epic are some of the best out there, adapting CM7 and CM9 to work on a device that is almost entirely unlike any other GS1. They continually took a device that is basically broken out of the box and turned it into a monster.
I mean no disrespect to the devs for our ET, as we have great devs here as well. We would be incredibly lucky to have devs from the OG epic come to our phone, as they are extremely talented and would bring a lot to our already excellent community. Please don't insult them again.
edit: I also should mention that the Epic was continually picked as the best GS1 varient by reviewers. Only one of the original 4 with a FFC, only one with 4G connectivity, only one with a keyboard. I would argue that the worst was the continuum, heh.

Lol this is why I hate xda/xda app I try to summarize a point and people look at it in a way that I didnt intend.. But w.e. I didn't mean the keyboard was ths whole reason why the epic 4g got a screwy GB update... Sh%t none of the galaxy s devices had stable gps.. (stock)but the keyboard didnt help... Just like the 3d technology for the evo 3d is being blamed for late ICS update....
The point that got taken away by your love and knowledge for the ugliest (IMO) gs1 is that CARRIERS I feel are to blame for late updates... Without them we would have it sooner and many can agree.. While some can disagree and blame the manufacturer... Or hardware of the phone...
And for the whole development thing? I am simply stating the phone wasnt sought after hence not many developers... Stop reading sh%t that isnt there I never said the developers where garbage.. So relax...
And if you think a keyboard is a + then Ill leave this conversation at that... Lol

The LOS issue was never really a Sprint issue per say. While many people argue that fact the fact of the matter is rooted or not rooted the phone had LOS issues out of the box. Sprint didn't really do much network wise to ge the issue fixed it was Samsung pushing out updates that started to fix the problem so I'm pretty sure this can go back to Samsung again not Sprint. Before I ever rooted my SGS2 I had it for a month on stock and while I had 2-3 LOS issues it was nothing that either moving the phone to a different place where it was sitting or just rebooting it didn't fix.
That being said once I did finally root the phone a month after I got it the first few EG30 roms I had massive LOS on each one. While we had a LOS checker and it did help at times there was just no way of getting around it. sadly flashing back to a pure stock rom always fixed the issue however. Move to EK02/EL29 (EK02 mostly) and the LOS was pretty much a done deal and it was gone again this was a Samsung update for modem and software in general which now fixed the problems so I don't see how Sprint is to blame in any of it. Sure they went about it and said they have no reported issues with the phone when there really were issues (LOS mostly which was a huge one for some people) but there was almost nothing Sprint could have done about that other then talk to Samsung and have them fix their software which is what they ended up having to do.

ICS update up in the air now?

Droid-Life just posted some new dates for the expected Ice Cream Sandwich update. Apparently HTC is now listing the DINC2 as being "To be determined (by the end of August). This doesn't sound very promising to me anymore. Not sure what may have changed but obviously something has.

Hopefully, the devs can figure out things even if this does not drop for us.
thats troubling...but given that it was previously promised and that all the sister/cousin phones (including the tbolt which was released earlier) are getting it, id say its still coming
(why even update the rhyme? no one got it, and the women that did dont care about gb/ics/whatever)
lame
although another take could be, its getting the update...but time frame is "tbd" but will be by the end of august regardless

One can hope that is for sure. However, with Verizon nothing surprises me as they like to cancel things at the last moment up to and including whole phones.
Yeah, the Thunderbolt and the Evo Design 4G both have our exact same chipset, so I don't see why it wouldn't be around June or so (once again, barring VZW's inane approval process).
EDIT: I think this is causing an unnecessary freakout. It's the Schedule that is TBD, not the update itself.
The majority of devices will receive upgrades in June and July 2012 and we expect to finish upgrades in August 2012 for all announced devices.
Our device has been announced by HTC and VZW as getting the upgrade. I'm willing to bet it's >90% done already by HTC, it's just a matter of when at this point.
/thread
Eh... not too worried. We will get it when we get it.
For the benefit of those in here, I am quoting my post from the OpenSense ROM thread:
nitsuj17 said:

my best guess is that "tbd" refers to when they actually will release, but "by the end of august" is the latest they will release it
wouldnt make sense to not release an update for a semi popular phone (or at least 10x popular as the rhyme) that is running the same chipset as so many of the other phones on that list

PLUS, and a huge plus, they said they will update it. I believe they should and would realize what a faux pas it will be if they now come out and say, you know what "We ain't gonna release it".
Plus, after scrutinizing the language used in the following sentences:
When will my device get the Android 4.0 upgrade?
The target timeline for announced devices is below. Because of partner and network testing, and approval processes for device updates, it can take up to 45 days for all carriers and countries to get the update after a rollout has begun.

It sounds to me that they are going to release ICS for the Dinc2. It is on the list of devices with a schedule of release dates... PLUS, a FAQ below says this:
What devices will not get Android 4.0?
We work hard to ensure each of our products has the optimal user experience and therefore some products will remain at their current version of Android. In general, devices with 512MB ROM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.0. These devices include the HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer, and others.

Now, tell me how can you even think that the Dinc2 is not getting ICS when, (a) it is in the list of devices scheduled to get ICS some time back, (b) it is in the table of devices getting ICS and the corresponding timelines and (c) it is NOT in the list of devices specifically mentioned as not getting ICS?
So, verdict: Chill out man! Our phone is gonna get some ICS love!
Captain Obvious, over and out.
=====
Not double posting. Just letting people get the relevant info as they probably wouldn't have expected the info to be in that other thread. Lemme know if I did something wrong! (hope not)
Verizon has a way of disappointing customers with last second decisions. I have been a customer of Verizon for over a decade so I have an idea of what I am talking about.
Of course, I hope for the best but they have a distinct way of stating things so that it can be left open for doubt. As the date for the release indicates. All other devices got a, very rare, 2 month expected date. Ours didn't. Which could easily lead to a "we are sorry but we have determined it would not be in our best interests to upgrade this device".

LOL! I wonder if they say "in our best interest"... That sounds like they are admitting that doing so will effect their profit margins
EDIT: Why would updating Rhyme make more sense than Dinc2. And why is it of higher priority than Dinc2 that it gets a more solid time frame???
EDIT 2: There is no way in hell they can pull off or even ATTEMPT to suggest that "sorry, we plan not to update the Dinc2. It is not capable of running ICS". Why? The Droid Incredible S is getting it in June/July!!! It is the same phone! With same processor, RAM, ROM etc. Probably a different radio (GSM versus CDMA).. So, I feel we better calm down and wait to see if HTC releases an official statement to clarify the ruckus...

LOL! I wonder if they say "in our best interest"... That sounds like they are admitting that doing so will effect their profit margins

You obviously don't understand Verizon. Please notice I did not say HTC. HTC is not the deciding factor here, Verizon is.

Well, that much is true, since I have been on Verizon for less than a year. Anyway, I am no dev, but it stands to reason that Kernels written for the IncS will (at least partly) work for Inc2. Excepting code meant for Radio etc., the rest of it should work for Inc2 as they are basically having the same hardware, right??
If so, and if Verizon screws me over (again, first DX2 and now this) then experienced devs may be able to pull code necessary for Camera from the Inc S's kernel and incorporate it into ours. Problem solved.

Adding to that, most of us here are already running ICS without their official update lol...

Perhaps, but take the time to read the threads and you will notice that all devs say they need source code to do it right. Notice they have not said the source code for the IncS.
Anyways, I'm not going to debate it with you anymore. Only time will tell if we get an actual ICS release or not.

That has never been in question as that is usually the only way some devices get updates. However, a released stock ROM will always help make things batter.
I have been with Verizon for 10 years about now. I always loved the service but over the last 2 years they are pissing me off. First they screwed over the droidx2. Then the unlimited data is going away and now the Dinc2 might not get what was told we would get. If verizon screws us again I am leaving to another carrier no matter what. I hate verizon at this point.
Definitely getting the feeling of the Eris all over again.

Of course, I was just supporting lite that saying our device can't run ICS is BS.

HTC Facebook answered this for me. ICS end of August.

I honestly don't even see the point of updating this phone in august.....
I'm definitely jumping to Galaxy S III, never liked sense and probably never will, but that's my 2 cents.

Its always good to see updates for older phones....especially since going forward those of us with unlimited data (and want to keep it) can't use upgraded to get cheap phones
Sgs3 will probably fall after the cutoff, and unless I really save up won't get it....the vzw variant will most likely not be as popular as it would have been

Samsung TMO GSII Source Released

Within 12 hours of the official ICS rom release. This bodes well for us that once OTA comes source won't be far behind.
Man, I don't quite get it, we've been getting leaks like crazy. How does a non standard Galaxy s2 version (the one without exynos) become the first to officially get ICS in America? Wtf Sprint and AT&T...
Downloading now to see if I can peek at the eMMC fix...

You answered it. There are other phones out there with the same chip in it that have ICS already, so it was easy for Sammy to use those references and drivers. On our phone Sammy had to go back to the drawing board because the Combo CDMA/Wimax is a difficult beast to get straight. Tweaks in kernel, rom and radio all need to work nicely and on our phone it is a bit of a pain. It'll come soon enough and in pretty good shape as well.
Also we are getting 4.0.4 and T-mobile only has 4.0.3 so our 4.0.3 could have been released awhile ago, but they pushed on. But the chipset and 4.0.3 helped out a bunch.
We want quality not quantity. So patience will be virtue

I personally like and actually value the fact that we have NOT got the official ICS update yet. With all of the leaks being distributed its a very clear indicator that sprint/samsung still have on going development. And are really trying to refine and polish our this update before just handing it over to us. Also keep in mind that our epic touch is not the new kid on the block anymore and could quite possibly becoming to EOL soon. I mean they did get rid of the EVO 3d pretty quick and tghe epic came out shortly after that. This could very well be our last update we will ever see for our phone. So lets make it count! Lets embrace the leaks we are getting to show us what is yet to come. And lets keep a focus on a main point here and that there is active development by the manufacterer/sprint for our device and its currently on going....
What?!? ONLY 43%?!?
I hope I get to peek at this before going home, for certain that I won't after.

^^ what he (she?) said. For the t-mobile version they just had to tweak the international version a bit in terms of chipset and some other minor changes. The epic touch is really a distant cousin of the gs2 family due to the gsm/wimax/notification light etc... Also sprint want's it's apps to work with it as well so that could be part of the issue.

Actually, when comparing the family tree to the international version, AT&T's version comes closest, ours is next, and T-Mobile is the furthest away due to having a different cpu/gpu as well as a different modem (the 42mps HSPDA+ modem versus 21mbs on the international). Yet amazingly T-mobile's got there's out first lol.
While it's true that CDMA/Wimax typically creates the biggest delays, from the roms leaked since months ago, all of the bugs that still exists seems completely unrelated to the modem (sound bug, exchange server, etc). Since there still are bugs, I'm glad they're being worked on, but I am curious if these bugs are present in the other Galaxy S2 phones and if not, what could be causing it.

Sprint will be rolling out a non-Jelly Bean software update

Since this hasn't posted yet. Epic Fail Sprint. At least there doing something to fix our sucky service. Here's link

And another if you don't trust android central.

How is it an epic fail?
Gotta love how everyone complains about not getting updates, then when they get an update they're pissed because its not as big as what you expected.

agreed. I don't think this is an epic fail at all. It seems like there is a 26 day turn around time from testing to roll-out. If anything remains consistent, I'm hoping we see jelly bean sometime mid august.

I can see why people are ungrateful.
First "fix" is developer speak for, "we are tweaking the visuals on your signal bars without actually doing anything helpful."
Second one is to support a Sprint app that I am sure is pay-for.
Last one is a simple toggle preference which I believe is nothing more than a build.prop edit.
Lets not forget what they aren't telling you: That local search will be gimped.
Yeah, I would be pissed and ungrateful too.

Is it really an update? RSSI indicator mod? That is not fixing any type of signal for your phone. It just sounds like a graphic fix to make you feel better.
Wi-fi and LTE defaulted on. I guess this is for the people who do not know they needed to turn it on. Now it will turn automatically once updated. Thing is, unless you are one of the 6 people to be in an LTE market will this really effect you? Bottom line is they need to gimp search and they are probably pressured to do it in a timely fashion. If not for that, you would not be seeing an update.
This is on update that Sprint can have first over Verizon. I will keep my search for now, thank you!
Its a epic fail because of the Be they feed you to update so they can fix some things with out you knowing. How are they not able to just say were going to take search off and give you some pretty lights for signal bars. How does it effect me. I'm with everyone else who thought they were buying pure Google phone. I keep lte off because I don't live in a lte area.
So like he said ^^^ how would this update have anything to do with me.

It is there following Verizon but can't seem do any better.
I thought coming fro. T-Mobile Sprint was going to be the **** unlimited data (o yea!) Cheaper and I get a dope ass phone. ( phone is ****ing sexy). But cmon sprint IDC for 4.1 now I just wanna go outside and search the web with my unlimited data at speeds faster then it takes a snail to cross the finish line. And I understand there setting up lte. How long do you think theyll keep it unlimited once the get lte up and running.
Back to topic for those that want to update do you just flash back your bak up off stock and update or do u need to something else.

Why would you want to even take this update? It isn't fixing anything but will be removing things....
I mean, I wouldn't use the stock update anyway, I'm just sticking to cm10 lol.
Can the update and update NAG be stopped ?
