Samsung Kies is a life saver! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I had a friend that was in a car accident and broke his screen on his T-Mobile Galaxy S II that wanted to save his data before sending it back when he received the replacement. I had no idea that Kies had the ability to backup/restore until today. I was trying to use adb to just pull the data but the device was not rooted and debugging was not enabled.
Then before i gave up i just opened Kies as a last resort method thinking to myself "Hmm... Samsung probably has something for this"
I was able to successfully backup from the one with the broken screen and restore to the replacement in about 20 minutes... Gave him the new phone and everything was all there as if nothing happened, contacts, messages, call logs, settings, pictures, music, videos, etc
I just wanted to share my experience with anyone who did not know about this feature from the Samsung Kies software. Is there anything else that you can do?
What do you use Kies for? Share your experience...

I use it to convert videos sometimes. And backup some pics to pc.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

Yeah, I would normally use other methods of data extraction like adb but like I said the screen was broken. But if your not rooted and you need to get your data this is something that works.

Good tip, I'll have to remember that if anyone comes in my store with similar needs.

See... This is why I thought it would be a good idea to start this thread. I'm glad to see that at least one other person saw this to be useful. Heck, even if only 1 sprint technician does this when customers are replacing phones it will help many customers in the long run.

Shameless bump for the guy with a broken screen with no root.

Great find! Let's hope I don't need to use it...

My phone was bought off Craigslist and I can't afford a new phone my hardware power button got conductive oil inside of it now whenever pressed it acts like. Held and hard restarts, I found an app called any unlock or something like that on the market my problem is when my phone sleeps it kills the process and I cant wake it is there a Dev who can help me make this program start in foreground I read about it but am clueless so I could really use help also if anyone knows where I can order the hardware button part that would be killer cause I could pay a shop to do the circuit soldering, I use this as my work phone and am worried I as I need to invest 500 into tools for work this month and can't afford repair, also my phone is on boost so there is no warranty, I can not take it to sprint, thank you

If you use CM9 you can set the volume buttons to wake the phone up. Could be a temporary fix for your problem.

That sounds good but with it is now I'm not sure I can get it into download or recovery, I can't remember the buttons off the top of my head, but if I can that sounds like a good temp solution, thanks ... do you know if there is a one click Odin for that and if I can just flash it over stock rooted el29 also if its ice based apn settings are an issue for me I need to be able to change them to boost mobiles, I contacted a store that does button soldering and replacement so I may give that a shot on Friday

Lost phone.

Just lost my phone in taxi I'm rooted also have face unlock and pattern unlock secondary. Is there anything I can do to assure the finder can't use it. Or can I track it. I'm on monthly 4g so no insurance!
That sucks man. As for gps locating your phone I believe that's offered by your insurance, or if you had any type of Norton, kaspersky, trend micro etc security on it. They offer stuff like that. Otherwise you might be SOL. As for them getting in I don't know. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that answer.

Go to the play store from your computer and download "plan b" it will be pushed to your phone and allows you to track it.

I hate how easy it is for someone to look up how to wipe a phone and easily bypass all security. Usually when someone finds a phone, that person doesn't want to know your stuff.
Where's my Droid can also be pushed, and then you can get it's location

did u ever set up Lookout on you phone? it comes w/it.. if you maybe randomly did one day, you can find it with that
2nd to the Plan B. That works amazingly. Also, check if you have a cab receipt. You might be able to use that to identify which cab specifically had the phone. You can call into their dispatch office and ask for that cab. Lookout is awesome too.
I called the cab said he saw no phone. Another passanger could have gotten it. I'm not even going to bother now what's done is done. Thanks to you and everyone for your help. I wanted a new phone anyway maybe my wife will get me one for fathers day. I find that the GS3 is not much of a significant upgrade from the GSII. I would much more suggest a Galaxy Nexus since it will still be relevant for many more months to come. The GN comes with pure stock ICS not that TW crap. The GN is almost certain to receive jellybean directly from Google pretty quick while the S3 will have to suffer through what the SII just went through from GB to ICS

I would recommend setting up a pin lock on your next device, that way whenever the phone is restarted it prompts you for the pin. It doesn't matter if it's been wiped or not, it registers with your carrier. Also, as added security, I use Avast and from there I can remotely wipe my sd card and the phone, thus removing any chance of someone getting any of my personal info.

It would take a lot of work. Modify the apk, modify the phone, then modify your ports and proxy. Still wouldn't be very safe and would have to make sure nfc beam was off. For reasoning on this point, just research why most credit cards lost their smart chips. For the lazy, a person of interest may find it a bit easier to get your credit card details if your are broadcasting it.
Now if Google incorporated a little 2 step process, Google it, then maybe it could work. Though I am sure this may prompt certain individuals to start working hard to get access to our Google ids.
For giggles, I tried first and second part. It kept crashing settings.apk. Something with the nfc trying to initialize and at random times killed my radio when trying to connect to Google. Not sure if that had something to do with TMO. Didn't bother looking into it more.
Well it is possible that way but modifying the apk will lead to problems but i just think that we take files from the galaxy nexus gsm and edit the phone like build.prop so instead we trick the apk but we might need to tweak it a little.
Ps I'm not a expert dev or a newbe im in the middle closer to newbee because I'm too scared to root my phone.

[Q] Bricked S3 with Red LED and seen by computer?

I just bricked my S3 and whenever I plug it in, eventually, some combination of button presses makes a red LED show up, however, no screen on. Whats even weirder is that when I plug it in, it see's some thing called QHSUSB_DLOAD, and attempts to install drivers for it. I'm wondering if this might allow me to fix it? If all else fails, can someone refer me to a JTAG repair service...
Edit - When I attempt DL mode, I can even hear it disconnect, then reconnect. It fails the driver install though.
Unfortunately bud your hard bricked.

All I did was brought it into the store, handed it to the guy and said it was broken. Said I had a FACTORY warranty (from Samsung), and that Samsung told me to have the store do the replacement for me. The guy behind the desk said, "Yeah, whatever you stick your SIM into, as long as it's T-
Mobile, your covered. You can even buy phones offline,". It's going to be here monday. Shipped Friday, next day shipping, only 5$. I'm so happy I'm not paying 70$ for a JTAG... Not sure if this'll work for everyone, but it did for me!

What will T-Mobile do if they find out if I'm rooted?

I need to take my phone up there because the phone is having problems with the battery and I've done everything I can. I have insurance on the phone and also have Android JB 4.1.2 and I'm rooted. Is there anyway to hide it or should I even care?

I wouldn't know what happens if you're going through T-Mobile but I assume you'll be fine if you're polite and explain you don't know what's going on, insist you've been with T-Mobile because of their excellent support if they make a big deal about it. Asurion the insurance company working with T-Mobile will take it anyways because they just fix it and that's it and resell it. And because you pay a monthly bill they're making money off of you regardless and you still have to pay a deductible.
But you SHOULD really return to stock.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 4
If they see that the phone is rooted, they'll just simply do nothing for you. That's why people say "your warranty is now void".
Do what is mentioned above or take your chances and hope the T-Mobile rep that is assisting you doesn't check to see if the phone is rooted or check the flash counter.

Oh, simple enough then! Just go to SuperSU and unroot.
You could even try to temp unroot if you think that's all you'd need to do to hide it.

What's the problem with the battery?
I like the features I get with my stock build, but I'm considering a root for better control over my apps, (Greenify, permission control) so this thread seems like a relevant question.
Is Triangle Away and unrooting all it takes to make it appear that I haven't done anything?
The warranty issue is the only thing stopping me, it's saved me a bunch in the past...

I rooted my phone once, but I will never do it again after what happened. Last year I rooted my GS3 and about a week later, my local T-Mobile store called my phone unexpectedly. The guy on the other end told me I was due for a price drop, but I would have to come into the T-Mobile store to sign the paperwork before it would take effect. 2 days later I stopped in to get the discount on my monthly payment. The T-Mobile employee said he would have to look at my phone just to verify that it was the correct serial number. He went into the back room and said he would be back in a few minutes. 10 minutes later, a police officer walks in the store and asks my name. I'm totally freaked out wondering what the deal is. He asks me to turn around a puts hand cuffs on me. The officer told me I was under arrested and being charged with "rooting a mobile device". I was booked and released, but I would watch what you do to your phone. Good luck.

Rooting a device isn't illegal. They can kiss my ring. Think about it, if it was illegal why are root apps allowed on Google Play? And also, why is XDA not been shut down?
Methinks something else happened there. Maybe you voided their warranty and tried getting a discount which may be against the rules. Or something. But I know for a fact this is legal. Unlocking is a different story however.
So my advice, root on my brothers it's the only damn freedom we have left here in America.
