So OGP community. I like ROMs. You like ROMs. We all like ROMs.
If you could have any ROM on this phone. What would it be? Why?
Is there a reason for somebody to build it for our device? Is it in Lollipop?
Any ROM at all?
I might take another ROM or two under my wing for weekly builds now that Lollipop is here. Especially since Carbon is taking it's good ol' time updtaing. :l
Happy flashing
As long the ROM supports F240x, I'll be good.
Any of the Bliss or Beanstalk ROMs. I would like to have TWRP work with the lollipop encryption if that is possible. That's not related to the ROMs though.

Bliss and Beanstalk are already have their own maintainers Hmmm Lollipop working with encryption... We'll have to look into that I suppose.
On all my devices i like slimrom roms. But on the e980 , nothing really strong on the latest slimrom.
i wish for a stable kitkat versions because every time when a new android version comes out, the rom developers run to make their rom with their latest android versions. i do understand that they take time to offer their rom with the latest android in order to compete each other but, the old bugs which might not be reported so often or getting ignored, wont get fixed and so it results to half fixed rom versions which the devs dont pay attention anymore bc they all want the latest stuff but plenty of bugs. so how can some of us suppose to profit from custom roms when the older androids arent finished ? that s the reason why some more ppl running back to stock roms which you are not able to custumize your settings and tweaks like no other...
that s my opinion, i hope you understand what i mean...

I do! I agree, for the most part. But actually many ROM makers continue to support KitKat builds to finalize them for people like you, who prefer stability (Totally understandable). I'll build Carbon's final KitKat build when they're done and you can bet your butt that'll be stable!
I want to focus on Lollipop because there's going to be a whoooole year ahead of us on it, may as well start now I suppose
Sorry the ROM community overlooks you, I hope you are able to experience a stable custom Android experience soon

i shall report as many bugs i can see and i ll learn how to logcat this and find out whose forum i can spam on.
but what i fear is, that the community will stop working on our phone roms and then it will be abandoned bc of other phone models. so in that case we will be left hanging again...
i know it doesnt sound positive but i saw that on the other phone model section in xda.

Well, I'm here for a solid number of months yet. And, if need be I'll write a good tut for building ROMs for our phone specifically if it is necessary before I leave for a new phone. Anybody can build, you just need a decent computer, some intelligence, and lots of patience. So that's not too much of a concern
Carbon news
Well carbon had posted their announcement that they freeze the kitkat development and working on the LOLLIPOP firmwares, which i find that kind of sad bc im a fan of bug free and stable roms...
here s the announcement https://carbonrom.org/on-to-sweeter-things/
As for the votes, I vote for having the latest features in your kernel for the kitkat versions like you have done on lollipop :good:

"Firstly, our Kitkat nightlies will be on a code freeze from here on out. No new features, nothing of that sort. Only bug fixes and commits that add to the ROM’s stability will be considered for admittance. The two nightlies normally released each week will also not being produced anymore. We will do our best to get the bugs fixed and release a final Kitkat Milestone build sometime in the future, but no guarantees as usual."
Sounds like they're working for a stable KitKat still. KitKat kernel? Mmmm :T The commits in the LP kernel took quite some time. I don't even have the old sources anymore. I suppose I can go redownload them but that's a lot of work for not very many users benefits.
I will look into it I suppose.
Has development slowed down for our device? Since lollipop got released, there hasn't been many new updates for existing roms or new roms. I know, if I want it, I should develop a rom myself. But, I've never been good at program languages so, I depend on the fine folks here on XDA. I appreciate all their efforts. But, again I ask, has development slowed?
The device is aging, M9 is supposed to be revealed tomorrow. I'm not even sure if they will make the 5.1 Android for M8, and that is much needed, seeing how buggy Lollipop is. I seriously regret updating, I wish I had enough sense to stay wit KitKat, that worked great on my phone.

ViperOneM8 has been updated three times in the last two weeks, with another update to come out in the next few days. Although two of them mostly addressed bug fixes, there were also new features added.
There has been a couple of lollipop nightly builds for this device. To be honest, I don't really notice a slowdown of development.

No i do not share the feeling development slowed down, then again why should a developer spend so much time on these builds when sense 7 is around the corner. I think they pick the most valuable tweaks and parts of optimization.

Would Cyanogen Mod be interested in developing for this phone now that we have unlocked bootloader? Given the choice, I'd love Paranoid Android, but I went hold my breath.
CM is already in development . https://github.com/CM-zenfone2
BrokenROM https://github.com/BrokenROM/device_asus_moorefield
Seems that are only for ZE551ML I hope that will be compatible with ZE550ML
If someone can get pure AOSP or CM working, the ROMs will flow out like water... once a base is established building many ROMs is easy. If we get CM, then look for ROMs like Beanstalk, BlissPop, Carbon, , etc. to follow closely behind. Patience, it will happen...

Good to see Asus is showing commitment to this phone. Also great to see you guys are embracing the aftermarket ROM community. More vendors need to be supportive like this.
We love the enthusiast community - you guys are the ones that like to tinker and have contributed to our growth over the years when we were just a motherboard vendor. I bet many of you still have fond memories of building PCs with our components before tinkering with phones .

Awesome! Is there/will there be collaboration with the developers regarding the kernel and device tree from ASUS as well? That would be key to have a fully-working custom ROM in the nearer future (versus the developers having to learn from scratch and sort of fend for themselves, kludging their way along and delaying the end goal).
So exciting!
We post our kernel source, but that's all we can offer, unfortunately. Our software development is done at our Taiwan HQ. But if any devs need anything, just send me a PM and I'll ask our software team.

This makes not much sense to me honestly. Why locking a bootloader in the first place and then stating to push development hard by providing test phones to specified devs?
But still I want to thank you for your commitment in making this phone a huge success - we'll kick Galaxy and Xperia and the likes out once done
Good thing to see Asus sharing to make custom ROMs efficient.
Already on Harfainx's ROM, can't wait to see things going even further.

This is my push from Technical Marketing for North America due to needs and wants for the US market. I place great emphasis on the community that has made many of the previous phones I've owned so great. I want that for the ZF2.
I'll probably start development for this phone once i get it. Never worked with an x86 android device before but it sounds like a fun challenge

Hi,
I've got some sort of situation here concerning building the kernel for ZF2 on my own. I downloaded the kernel source from ASUS website and followed the instructions one by one (download the android source code, use the appropriate toolchain, issue the kernel build command using fhd_defconfig, etc.
The phone boots and works good, BUT:
The phone never gets to deep sleep mode because of hsic_s3_wlock (kernel wakelock from USB HSIC). Could you please ask someone from the technical department to check what is causing this or if any config entry is missing? I am really starting to doubt that this is something I can influence at all

I saw the MIUI ROM a few days ago and alot of people are praising it and claiming that it is faster than the stock Fire OS.
Can anybody please tell me where I can get that ROM please? My Fire OS is really slow and I'm facing heating problem.

MIUI was a kang of ggow's CM11 and was pulled due to multiple violations. You're better off downloading the most recent CM11 from ggow's thread. Any "benefits" of MIUI over CM11 were grossly exaggerated or placebo effect at best.

Yes, it is based on the CM11 Port (which is partly by ggow) without giving him the proper credit. That's bad and should not be done. Noted and agreed.
...but: The MIUI ROM is still very nice. I prefer it over the CM11 ROM. The "benefits" as you refer to it ironically are based on the MIUI system. It feels more responsive to me. Plus I anyway like MIUI (and yes, we could argue now whether it is too colorful/whatever, but hey, I like it ). I won't give a direct link here in order not to make people more angry as they are, but just a small hint: Search for the keywords 4pda fire phone miui in the search engine of your choice and you should find it quickly with the help of e.g. Google Translate.
PS: Just write me if i crossed a line here I am not aware of.

Hello KloNam, you are certainly entitled to your opinion on MIUI. But I respectfully make the following counterpoints:
1) ggow has been the only contributor the Kodiak CM11 branch. So yes, you could argue from the CM11 level, he has partially contributed, the reality is his fixes are the entire reason CM11 is working on our device. Not to dismiss the contributions of CyanogenMod team, but the same argument would be that CM11 is only partially creditable to CyanogenMod as Google created Android. I assert ggow is solely responsible for CM11 to work as well as it does on this specific device.
2) My understanding is the Fire Phone MIUI ROM was created by simply inserting the CM11 ROM into a MIUI generator. (other phones may have been built from MIUI source, but that was not the case with the Fire Phone). That's why we see all the same bugs and fixes present in CM11 also manifest in MIUI. That's not creating...that's copying plain and simple. It's the equivalent of putting a new filter on a photograph and then saying it's an entirely new picture and not giving credit to the original photographer.
3) I respect that you "feel" it's faster, but in none of readings have I seen any empirical evidence that MIUI is faster (benchmarks, etc.). Visual tweaks like animations can change the perception without actually changing the performance. If you do have evidence of improved performance, I would be genuinely interested. When it comes to the overall look of the ROM, I will not debate as beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.
4) Finally, when installing any ROM on your phone, you *must* consider the legitimacy of the source. Many of us have banking apps on our phones, let alone tons of other data off varying levels of privacy. Therefore, you have to take the integrity of the poster into consideration before installing their ROM. I personally would not install a ROM where the poster was not 100% forthcoming with the sources used. Credibility matters. I want to install the ROM where the actual developer himself is active in the forum providing support if issues arise.
And finally, honestly, I despise people who don't give credit where credit is due or take other's work without asking. Going back to the credibility point, if intellectual honesty isn't a core value, then I don't trust their work product.
Based on the above, I would not recommend others to install MIUI on the Fire Phone. You are of course more than welcome to make your own decision based on your own criteria.

Hello Plonka, regarding your points:
1) Yes, indeed, that was the point I was referring to. And yes, you can obviously play that game quite long: Without Steels445 no MIUI on Fire Phone -> Without ggow no CM11 on FP -> Without CM-Team no CM -> Without Google no Android -> Without SUN no Android (as we know it) ->...
2) Yes, that ROM hasn't been build from source, but rather by exchanging the right libs/binaries/whatever. Still, it is work. Work somebody spend for free (neglecting the huge amount of fame for making a Custom ROM for a 2 years old amazingly failed Smartphone). Obviously it does not take the same amount of knowledge and probably work. But hey.
3) "Visual tweaks like animations can change the perception without actually changing the performance. " I need the 45k Antutu Performance in perhaps like 0.5% of the time. In all other cases I just want a responsive and snappy UI. And MIUI offers that.
4) Very legit point. Totally agree.

But if you are interested in getting your hands dirty, here's the link you need to build one for yourself. It's a very straightforward process.

CM ROMs available in Chinese forums
There are CM ROMs available in official Chinese forum (bbs.zuk.cn)
CM13: bbs.zuk.cn/z2/t135170/
Download: pan.baidu.com/s/1qYlKh5a Verification Code: kd5f
CM14: bbs.zuk.cn/z2/t176429/
Download: pan.baidu.com/s/1skYQSm5 Verification Code: e95q
Google Translate may help you understand what they say.
The Baidu NetDrive would require a code as provided above when you access the file.
The ROMs are unofficial versions but they work fine.
Four promotional software exist in the ROM.
/system/app/NewBrowser
/system/app/AppCenter
/system/app/Movie2345
/system/app/Weather2345
The removal of these injected apps is recommended before use.

I own a OnePlus One and i was thinking about buy it as well but for a familiar, not for me and It's clearly that this device is far away from the OPO development, and it surprised me because it's a great device.
Just curious, and sorry for the little off-topic: how is it in terms of performance, camera and screen compared to the OPO?
Do you know if there are any update about this? I'm thinking about buy it if we can get official CM14.1 builds in some near future.
Basically I'm interested in buying it only if there are a fully functional custom rom like CM, slim or omni.

Yeah i saw that at least in that forum there is much more activity, but even with that the development is not as good as i would like to see. Maybe I'm quite exigent with this but i think this device has a really good potential since his source code was published some few months ago and i don't see big results for now.
For example, the only official builds from a recognized development group i saw was from Mokee. That doesn't need to mean the development is bad but also I'm seeing some people complaining about some minor issues in unofficial builds like CM13.

I see what you mean though don't agree with. If you talk of chinese cm13 then yes.
Just take the latest release from fedor and you'll be good. I am myself crafting a rom from the different guys release.
Right now hardcore devs (meaning doing that full time) are on cm14.1 port, which is already running but having some issues.
CM 13 is mostly stable, in the coming weeks you should have some even better releases coming out.
