I have my Desire on Three UK network. It used to fall back to a 2G signal when there was no 3g coverage, for example when I am at home.
I noticed yesterday that my phone just wouldn't get a signal in the house, I then checked my old N95 which still has a Three Uk sim card and same problem.
Anyway I went to work and same issue inside the office. Can get a 3g signal when there is one but no 2g signal.
I deceided to phone up Three customer service to see if there was a fault or something but no real help there apart from they said they would report what I said to their technical team.
I then come home and look on the net and see things like this....
http://www.gogadgetnews.com/2010/11/08/3-starts-killing-off-2g-coverage/
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems ?
If they have switched of 2g here then I am fuming as it means I cant receive any calls at home !!

They used to use O2, but they switched to Orange some years ago.
If you no longer get a signal at home or work you may be able to get out of your contract.
Regards,
Dave
Yes. so much so i have got out of my contract eary without penatly, over the last 6 months the 3g transmiter works for a few days every time thay fix it.
Thay have turned off 2g now a quick look on Google will fill you in with the information.
I have a question for the lucky ones that could put their hands on this cell... did it have a sim when you tried it? Did you noticed loss of signal when holding it in some ways? I've read something on the net about poor signal on HTC One X and I'm not very happy since I've just paid for my preorder..
"I've read something on the net..." is hardly a valid claim, is it now? Why don't you at least show us where you read this and people can make an informed argument.

I'm not aware of anyone getting really hands on with the final release product, so I'd take any such grains with a pinch of salt until the real product starts getting out there and tested.
Ah yes this is a problem... I've read about this on... er a Chinese forum... if you wrap both hands tightly round the phone and then pull it in close to your chest while hanging upside down then the signal drops to just one bar... I've cancelled my pre-order as this is unacceptable to me!

Wait, nothing sucks until it is proved to suck ;-) Maybe they were false rumors... maybe they were good rumors but they were about pre-production samples..
How is the GSM/3G reception on the phone?.
Does it suffer from any signal loss due to any death grip?.
I previously had a HTC Incredible S which suffered from Incredible signal loss when i used to type sms in portrait mode while my fingers covered the lower back of the phone.....also lost wifi signals in landscape mode...
Similar issues were also reported in the last flagship HTC sensation..
Is there any issue with this phone's signal strength GSM + Wifi(in landscape) when ur fingers are placed near the top of the phone?
This can be checked from the menu *#*#4636#*#*
Pl. post ur test results so that all can benefit...
RSSI: -79 before covering top of phone in normal way when holding in landscape. While covered went to -86... Not reallyuch of a problem
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk
Signal strength went from -91 dBm 11 ASU uncovered to -89 dbm 12 asu covered as in when holding landscape mode...

Hi guys,
After weeks of waiting, i finally got my HTC One x today.
But there is a problem.
When i put my Sim Card in , I get around 2 Bars of signal, and then it goes away and the cross comes over the bars, then the phone says ' Preparing Sim ... ' , then the 2bars appear again, then they go away and the the phone says ' Preparing Sim ... ' , and on and on and on and on again!
I am extremely sad and dissapointed. was really looking forward to this phone.
Can anyone help with this issue?
P.s. the phone is stock and untouched.
suspect some are leaving the factory with dodgy antenna's!
my telstra sim which usually has full reception is lucky to get 1 bar out of 5 on this phone. This handset will be going back on Tuesday! (after easter)
i know theres a problem with this handset as i can't see any other providers network in the network search!
Signal Strength is -107dBm 3 asu

Does that affect people living on the southern hemisphere? I live in London but I do sleep upside down.
Same reception problem. my old nokia had all 4 bars but HTC one x had only 2 when both are at same place and axis.
i had a htc evo 3d and i had excellent reception and now, with the one x, i only have 2 to 3 bars where i used to have 5 with the evo.. but, besides the number of bars, e never had a problem so far with reception or internet speed. so, i'll check this during the next days
Phone Signal Strength
Hi i have just done a test on mine and i am coming up witht e same issues. I had a iPhone 4 and moved to this. I had full signal at work and now only 1 / 0 bars show now.
Signal Strength: -99 dBm to 7 asu

No, I don't think it has anything to do with antenna. I have the "lost signal problem" as well, actually when my cell is "disconnected", the phone is telling me no SIM inside, and when it suddenly showed me "Preparing SIM...", I got signal again.

I had the same problem with network search not showing any other operators until I entered this code *#*#4636#*#* then changed the "Set preferred network type" from WCDMA Preferred to GSM Only. Now I can see other operators in network search.
Is anybody else experiencing this issue with their phone signal?
I'm getting only 2 bars (at times, 1).
Don't know if it's an issue from my cell phone company's end, or from the firmware update.

I am using 3G, yes. But the strange thing is that when the phone sits idle, it is down to 2 bars, but when I'm on a call, I get full bars.
I've had my HOX now for just over a month and i'm loving it. One thing that is slightly bugging me is that occasionally the phone signal will completely cut out giving me an 'x' where the signal strength normally is and telling me that I can only make emergency calls only.
This will correct itself within 30 seconds or so and go back to giving me a signal. This doesnt happen all the time which has made it harder for me to diagnose. Do you think it is a problem with the sim card (Orange UK network) or is it likey to be an issue with the radio software?
I never had an issue with Orange on my Desire although this is a different SIM card.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
I think this is a common problem I'm on Vodafone and this happens to me. I applied a fix when installing insertcoin Rom a while back and it doesn't do it as often now.
I'm glad this has been mentioned now because my One X (On Vodafone) drops connection all the time. The amount of times that I have been somewhere and needed to transfer money through the Natwest App and haven't been able to is getting annoying now. As I am not rooted I can't try any fixes but I have found by using GSM only around where I live, it won't drop signal half as much or often. I don't have a 3G mast near me so its always dropping connection switching between the two as opposed to a smooth transition.
Hi,
You are not alone. I'm on Orange UK and have seen this problem on quite a few occasions. Unfortunately, as yet I can't see any pattern to understand when it happens or what causes it.
Tim
Happens to me on 3. Sometimes I have to hard reset to get it back.
Glad that its not just me. At least I can rule out an issue with the sim.
As it seems to cover more than 1 network, could it be a radio issue that is addressed in a future firmware upgrade?
It is definitely not just you. I'm in Malaysia on the Maxis network and have this problem as well. It happens randomly - at the most it happens twice in a day.
Do you also sometimes get the message 'Preparing SIM card...' at the bottom of the screen?
I brought my phone to the HTC service centre and they offered to take it in to test the radio. I will do this when I get back from my holiday and keep you guys posted!

I do get that message at the bottom of the screen. I'd be interested to hear what the outcome is once you've had your radio tested.
Yep, it's the [email protected] radio firmware HTC has provided us with. Radio 2.05 is much better. HTC are useless with updates. I've had problems with my network connection for 2 months!

Me too.
Except I am on Tim @ Brasil.
This is nearly always down to signal.
If you're in an area that has decent 2G signal but fluctuating/low 3G signal then the phone will keep trying to connect to the 3G signal. Sometimes it'll be too weak and not be ableto connect and will stick with the 2G signal. If the 3G signal is only just strong enough to connect the phone will switch to 3G mode (dropping the 2G signal). Then it'll realise that the 3G signal is too weak to do anything with (showing an 'X' in the signal area) and drop back to your full 2G signal.
3G signal is breathable which means that if lots of people are connected to the 3G mast then it's signal area (i.e. distance from mast) is reduced. If no-one is using the 3G mast then it's area is bigger.
Perhaps your signal is breathing in and out of use where you are.
Obviously the radio can have an affect too, but with so many people using the same radio software there are going to be some it works well for and others it doesn't.
Personally, I keep my phone on 2G/GSM Only for most of the time and then switch to 3G when I want to use data. I hardly ever get problems with signal, and if I do I shrug and put it down to the coverage in the area I'm in.
P.S. Saying this, my 2G signal seems to drop in and out when I have WiFi turned on. Usually when I'm using wifi I'm not making calls anyway so it doesn't bother me...
Thanks for this useful info. How do I set my phone to 2g only so I can test this theory out ?

It seemed 'good enough' to me, but I only had 2 days with my phone on 2.05 and then my camera wouldn't work at all. So I sent the phone back for a replacement. Crazy it's still not fixed!
I've had 5 faulty phones now.

Which is correct, however any phone working correctly should manage to switch between 2G/3G without problems, i.e. you should not find the phone without a signal at all provided there is 2G coverage, which seems to be the case being reported here. My previous phones with 3G/2G never had a problem, and the HTC One X has been no different for me, it hasn't dropped it's signal, I'm on Vodafone in UK.

Phil

This is happening fairly regularly for me on UK T-Mobile. Seems to happen when switching between Orange and T-Mobile or T-Mobile and 3G T-Mobile. I've got a ROM that distinguishes between a 2G and 3G connection in the carrier name area.

Which, and what about it was supposed to be a fix? I'm using MaXimus 2.1.
It happens to me also. I'm on 3 in Denmark. They providing only 3G coverage in area. So far, I figured out that it's happening when I'm loosing signal completly (i.e. when I go down in concrete basement), and when I'm within coverage again, phone is unable to register on any network at all. Sometimes can help turn airplane mode on and off, or sometimes I have to turn phone off and on again.

I work in downtown Houston and, while I am always connected to either 3G or 4G, I consistently have terrible phone signal. It'll only ever range from zero to 3 bars and I don't even think I've seen a full signal since I've owned this phone. Now, this isn't too much of a deal as I can always text and make calls (although it takes a while to connect sometimes.), but I'm left wondering if this is a cell tower issue or if something may have updated incorrectly. I'm rooted and unlocked and have only ever flashed the last 6 or so Lifeless ROM updates, so I don't really think I could have messed it up myself, but I find it hard to believe that downtown Houston would have such bad phone signal. Any insight?

I work in Downtown Denver and have a very similar problem downtown, but not out in the suburbs. My Sprint store has given me a couple of explanations.
1) The buildings block the signal. There are areas of downtown, particularly by the tallest buildings, where occasionally I will drop my cell signal completely
2) In a higher concentration area signal is reduced due to more people using that signal (I don't understand how this one affects signal strength, but that's what I was told)
How is your signal outside of the downtown area? Did you update Profile and PRL after flashing? Ever dropped the phone?

Well, I live about 14 miles west of downtown, and even there, I don't get full strength signal. As I said, I don't ever remember seeing more than 3 bars of signal. I update the PRL and Profile after every flash, and just today I dialled ##72786# to see if the hands free activation would do anything but no luck. I've also encountered moments where I'll be at home (again, I normally have data coverage and a few signal bars) and suddenly, I'll get an alert notifying me that I'm roaming.

This has been an issue on every LG Sprint phone with Android I have used. I am not sure what causes it but the bars on the screen never show full strength. That doesn't mean it isn't working though. I have heard it is just how LG worked the rom to show signal.

Let me first start off by saying this is the furthest from the truth. If it shows a weak signal its because this phone has a weak signal.
This is my 3rd day with this phone and as much as I raved about it on a couple of threads, weak signal is definitely one of the negatives.

Dude the LTE radio has nothing to do with the phone signal. Two separate radios.
This phone just has weak radios. Now the question is, is it a software or hardware issue? my bet is software but then again I'm not an engineer
Edit
Funny thing is open signal maps gives me an 85dbm reading yet in settings it shows 94 dbm

I don't have an issue with 3g I get great 3g signal my issue is with lte. Lte has bed in my area since late August early September and I've had the s3 evo lte and the iPhone none of them have had an issue picking up or holding lte the lgog does.and I think it all boils down to the phone not recognizing the correct signal and thinking its weaker than it truly is. In my house and through my town I would never drop lte On the others this phone barely holds it. I've been 100 yards from a cell tower and the phone won't go below 84dbm when I know the signal strength is stronger
I installed the Network Signal Info app on several phones in my store and the LGOG registered about 9db worse consistently compared to the SGS3 or Evo LTE
About the same thing I've seen with this phone I'm hoping its a quick fix for lg with the next update. I was really hoping that zv9 would come with a new radio
